Directions: Please Read Before Giving the Assessment
The purpose of the CFA is comprehension and cognition. Fluency and/or decoding should not be assessed during this time!
Kindergarten Listening Comprehension
• Before giving the assessment you may want students to practice circling and underlining pictures in a separate activity.
• Read each story aloud to a whole class or in small groups of students.
• Do not discuss the stories.
• In a group of 5 – 6 students ask each question.
• You may read the story and questions in Spanish or English.
• You may want to read and assess only one story each day.
• Remind students to STOP on the stop page. Do not allow them to go on to the “happy face” page until you have scored their answers.
When scoring.... (Summary Assessment Scoring Sheet)
When students have finished the entire assessment enter the total number of correct selected responses for each standard (0 – 5).
When students have completed the constructed response score ONLY with a number from 0 – 3 as indicated by the constructed response rubric.
The self-assessment reflection check sheet (happy faces) can be small group discussions or one on one.

B. This material is intended for assessing reading informational standards RI - 1,2 and 3 at the end of quarter 1. Do NOT allow students to read the passages before the assessment.
C. Student scores can be recorded on the (1) Learning Progressions Checklist (in the last box). Students scores can also be recorded on the (2) Class Assessment Summary Sheet enter the total number of correct selected responses for each standard. Each constructed response is a maximum of 3 points.

Short Constructed Response
Short constructed response sample questions are designed to assess CCLS reading standards. These are single questions that ask students to respond to a prompt or question by stating their answer and providing textual evidence to support their answer.
The goal of the short response questions is to require students to show succinctly their ability to comprehend text. In responding to these questions, students will be expected to write in complete sentences.

What do elephants do? Draw what the story said.
Scoring: Details in the picture that demonstrate an understanding of what the story said would be a large illustrated elephant with tusks and a long trunk. Other details form the story might include a student showing in some way that elephants live a long time, and are smart. More evident details would be an elephant eating its favorite foods (grass, twigs and fruits) and drinking.

Sunflowers
A sunflower is a big, yellow flower. It looks a lot like the sun. A sunflower has a circle in the middle. Around the circle, lots of petals grow. A sunflower needs a lot of sun to grow! Sunflowers are very pretty. You can grow them in gardens.
They are colorful and bright. You can also put sunflowers in a vase. The sunflowers can live inside your home. Just be careful when you touch sunflowers. The stems are rough and scratchy.
Sunflowers have seeds. The seeds are very good to eat. Birds and squirrels love sunflower seeds. People can eat sunflower seeds too. But don’t eat their shells!
Teachers read the story aloud 1 – 2 times, to whole class or small groups of students. Do not discuss the story.

Busy Bees
Bees are amazing insects. They work hard to get food. Bees get their food from flowers. This is why bees buzz around flowers.
Bees make honey. First they get food from flowers. Then they make honey. Bees love making honey.
People also take honey from bees. All honey comes from bees. Honey can be very sweet!
Bees live in big groups. Thousands of bees live in one hive. The hive has one queen bee. The queen is the mother bee.
Bees are always busy. We sure are lucky that they make honey. But be careful around bees. Bees can sting you with their stinger!

The African Elephant The African elephant is very big! It is the biggest land animal on Earth. It is also one of the smartest land animals. The elephant has a long trunk and two white tusks. Elephants live in Africa and can live for up to 60 years of age. They love to eat and drink. In fact, elephants spend half of the day eating. Their favorite foods are grass, twigs, and fruit. What are your favorite foods?
