Today’s Objectives

• Review, record, and integrate class routines and procedures.

• Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

• Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.

• Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text relate to each other and the whole.

A blog is not a journal.1. Use a new, unripped paper for each blog.

2. Write your heading (name, date, period) in the upper left-hand corner.

3. Write a title on the first line.

4. Write the prompt in the margin (not the main space).

5. Develop your ideas by writing 300-350 words.

6. Use academic format: accurate spelling, punctuation, mechanics + paragraph breaks.

7. You can share what’s personal, but not what’s private.

8. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers.

9. Find the blog prompt on our online calendar at www.mpsaz.org/mesa/staff/amandelora.

School’s Out . . . Forever

Selected Passages

1. Education makes you independent. – Candace Huskey

2. School, for me, pretty much keeps me in check for actually accomplishing something in life. If I never went to school, I’d probably be sitting home every day or have some half-ass job because I was never taught to read or write. I’d probably be wishing I could get an education to get out of the crappy life I have. – Erick Sanchez

3. I would be totally stoked if we didn’t have school. – Laural Haws

Determining Central Ideas or Themes

1. As you read, look for ideas that get repeated. Mark (highlight) the repeats.

2. Ask and answer: How do the repeated ideas relate to the topic itself? (Why go to school?)

3. Write the central idea of the text in your own words, as a claim:

• Education makes you independent.

• School is __________________________________ .

What to do next . . .

1. In your workspace, silently read the blog assigned to your group. Follow the advice on finding central theme.

2. Write the central idea of the blog in your own words, in the space at the bottom of the page.

Group 1 = Blog 1 Group 4 = Blog 4 Group 7 = Blog 3

Group 2 = Blog 2 Group 5 = Blog 1 Group 8 = Blog 4

Group 3 = Blog 3 Group 6 = Blog 2 Group 9 = Blog 2

LMG

1. One group member will read the blog out loud.

2. Take turns telling your thoughts about the ideas in the blog and the writing style.

3. Share your text marking.

4. Answer the question: How do the repeated ideas relate to the topic? (Why go to school?)

5. Share your written claims.

6. Choose the claim that most accurately captures the central idea and is most effectively written.
