June 23–October 15, 2017 Ancestral Modern: Australian Aboriginal Art from the Kaplan & Levi Collection Ancestral Modern introduces American audiences to the spectacular flourishing of Indigenous Australian painting and sculpture that has occurred since the 1970s. The exhibition presents approximately fifty artworks, including paintings on bark strips, hollow logs, and canvases, in addition to a small selection of sculptures. In many cases, artists have translated motifs from traditional art forms, such as rock and body painting, to media that can be more easily shared with viewers around the world. This exhibition was organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Seattle Art Museum. It was made possible by the generosity of Mrs. Donald M. Cox, the Wolfensohn Family Foundation, and an anonymous donor. One-Day Educator Workshop: Thursday, September 7, or Saturday, September 9, 2017, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. October 6, 2017–January 21, 2018 World War I and American Art World War I and American Art is the first major exhibition to examine the ways in which American artists reacted to the First World War. Images made during the war reveal American artists in transition, using more experimental forms to capture the apocalyptic tenor of the conflict, but also drawing on a straightforward realist manner to make the human experience accessible to their audience. George Bellows, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Georgia O’Keeffe, and John Singer Sargent are among the more than fifty artists whose response to the Great War is explored. This exhibition was organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. November 10, 2017–June 24, 2018Nick Cave: Feat.Chicago-based artist Nick Cave (b. 1959) is best known for his elaborate “soundsuits,” elaborate human-shaped sculptural forms composed of a wide variety of found and repurposed commonplace materials. This exhibition will include a dynamic selection of soundsuits, as well as a projected video, several wall-mounted sculptures, and a large multimedia installation. The works are accessible to audiences of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, yet on a deeper level speak to issues of racial and social justice and the need for more time and space in contemporary society to cultivate individual dreams and aspirations.

February 23–May 28, 2018Rome: City and EmpireThe stories of Rome and its vast empire continue to captivate and intrigue people almost three thousand years after its foundation. Rome: City and Empire brings to Nashville more than two hundred of the British Museum’s most engaging and beautiful Roman objects. They tell the story of how Rome grew from a series of small villages into a mighty empire, on an unprecedented scale.

The presentation of this exhibition is a collaboration between the British Museum and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts.One-Day Educator Workshop: Thursday, March 8, or Saturday, March 10, 2018, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Educator SPARK is a monthly informal idea exchange for and by art educators. Spark your creativity and curiosity by participating in sessions led by area art teachers from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. Continue your conversations afterward in a comfortable setting or explore Frist Center current exhibitions. Martin ArtQuestOften called the heart and soul of the Frist Center, ArtQuest’s thirty incredible hands-on stations inspire visitors to become artists as they learn about art. Visitors of all ages are invited and encouraged to create prints and collages, sketch and paint, and explore the essentials of art, including color, pattern, texture, and perspective.
