Guide to terms and symbols used in this course

Here is a guide to the terms and symbols used in this course: what you should do everytime you are required to complete a task.

Ejercicio/Exercise A writing, listening, speaking or readingactivity to be done as part of the coursework.

    Actividad escrita Written activity

    Prctica oral Speaking activity

Comprensin auditiva Listening comprehension activityComprensin de lectura Reading comprehension activity

This is the symbol used for writing activities. Whenever you see this, you will needto write your response to some questions, to provide or to complete someinformation by ticking boxes, filling gaps, etc.

This symbol indicates that you need to ring your teacher to do your speaking (oral)exercises over the phone.

This is used for self-correcting exercises: each time, do the exercise as requiredthen check yourself with the section "Answers to self-correcting activities" which canbe found at the end of each unit of work.

This means that you have to read and understand a text, then answer somequestions based on it.

This means that you must use the CD we send you with this unit of work. TheCD is meant to guide you through the course as well as to get you to listen topre-recorded material. All listening comprehension and listening andresponding exercises will be on this course CD for you to listen to.

Course CD: for each unit of work you have a Course CD. this is for you to listen topre-recorded course material.

Stop and Study These symbols means that you have to stop andstudy what is presented to you.

Note: In order to give you immediate feedback, as well as to help you achieve greaterfluency by expanding vocabulary and allowing greater practice of structures inthe target language, it is recommended that you complete all oral exercises byway of weekly phone lessons. In this way, you will also have a better opportunityto be helped with any difficulties and to ask questions about your weekly work.

    Pronunciation Tips

    Consejos para mejorar tu pronunciacin.

Spanish is pronounced the way its spelled, and vice-versa. So pronounce eachsound the same way every time the corresponding letter appears.

Watch for exceptions. In some cases, for example, the letteru doesnt make the oosound (guitarra, guerra)

Spanish sounds are usually made towards the front of the mouth instead of the back, with little or no air coming out. And, short, choppy sounds are better than longstretched-out ones.

Accented () parts of words should always be pronounced LOUDER and with moreemphasis (ol). If theres no accent mark, say the last part of the word LOUDER andwith more emphasis (espaol). For words ending in a vowel, or in n ors, the next tothe last part of the word is stressed (importante).
