Fig. On the passengers side near the firewall is a bolt retaining the engine wiring. Remove this . . .

Fig. . . . then push the retaining clip to release the harness

Fig. Now simply lift the harness up and tie it up it out of the way

Remove the No. 2 timing belt cover as follows:

1. Remove the bolt and disconnect the engine wire protector from the No. 3 (rear) timing belt cover.

2. Disconnect the engine wire protector clamp from the No. 3 timing belt cover.

3. Remove the five bolts from the No. 2 timing belt cover.  4. Remove the No. 2 cover from the engine.

Fig. Place the new gasket on the No. 2 timing cover till it sticks firmly

13. Install the No. 2 timing belt cover with the five bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

14. Install the engine wire protector clamp to the No. 3 timing belt cover.  15. Install the engine wire protector to the No. 3 timing belt cover with the bolt.  16. Apply new gasket the way you did on the No. 2 cover on the No. 1 timing cover.

Secure the No. 1 timing belt cover with four bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

Fig. Place the new gasket on the No. 1 timing cover till it sticks firmly

17. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).

Page 9: 1MZfe toyota timingbelt

18. Install the No. 2 alternator bracket. Tighten the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). Do not tighten the pivot bolt at this time.

19. Install the No. 2 right engine mounting bracket and the moving control rod.  20. Install the right engine mounting stay.  21. Connect the two ground wire connectors.  22. Install and adjust the drive belts.  23. Install the coolant reservoir.  24. Install the right front splash shield and wheel assembly.  25. Connect the negative battery cable.  26. Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.  27. Recheck the ignition timing.

1MZ-FE Engine

1. Remove the timing belt covers as described earlier in this section.  2. Remove the right engine mounting bracket by removing the nut and two bolts.

Fig. Remove the right engine mounting bracket bolts and nut . . .

Fig. Place matchmarks on the pulley and cover

4. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt.  5. Turn the crankshaft and align the crankshaft timing pulley groove with the oil pump

alignment mark. Always turn the engine clockwise.

Fig. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to align the crankshaft timing pulley grove with the oil pump mark

6. Ensure the timing mark of the camshaft timing pulleys and rear timing belt cover are aligned. If not, turn the engine over an additional 360 °.

Page 18: 1MZfe toyota timingbelt

Fig. . . . then remove the crankshaft pulley gear

NOTEDo not scratch the sensor portion of the crankshaft timing pulley.

14. Inspect the seal for leakage and replace if necessary.

Fig. Look for seal leakage and replace if noticeable

To install:

15. When installing the crankshaft timing pulley, along the pulley set key with the key groove of the pulley, then slide the pulley on. Install the crankshaft timing pulley,

Page 19: 1MZfe toyota timingbelt

with the sensor side facing inward. Install the timing belt plate and tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).

Fig. Install the crankshaft timing pulley with the sensor facing inward

16. Install the No. 1 idler pulley using a 10mm hexagon wrench, install the plate washer and idler pulley with the pivot bolt. tighten the pivot bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm). Check that the pulley moves freely.

17. Install the No. 2 idler pulley and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm). Check that the pulley moves smoothly.

Page 20: 1MZfe toyota timingbelt

Fig. Install the No. 2 idler pulley with the bolt and washer in these locations

18. Install the right side camshaft timing pulley, face the flange side of the pulley outward. Align the knock pin on the camshaft with the knock pin groove of the timing pulley, then slide the right hand camshaft pulley on. Install the pulley bolt and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).

NOTEUse a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 13.39 inch (340mm).

19. Install the left side camshaft timing pulley, face the flange side of the pulley outward. Align the knock pin on the camshaft with the knock pin groove of the timing pulley, then slide the left side camshaft pulley on. Install the pulley bolt and tighten to 94 ft. lbs. (125 Nm).

20. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley bolt of the crankshaft. Turn the crankshaft, and align the timing marks of the crankshaft timing pulley and oil pump body.

21. Using a spanner wrench, turn the camshaft pulley, align the timing marks of the timing pulley and the No. 3 timing belt cover.

22. Remove any dirt or oil from the pulleys and keep them clean. Only wipe the pulleys. Face the front mark of the timing belt forward. align the installation mark on the belt with the timing mark of the crankshaft timing pulley. Align the installation marks on the timing belt with the timing marks on the camshaft timing pulleys.

23. Install the timing belt in the following order:  1. Crankshaft pulley  2. Water pump pulley  3. Left camshaft pulley  4. No. 2 idler pulley  5. Right camshaft pulley  6. No. 1 idler pulley

Page 21: 1MZfe toyota timingbelt

Fig. Install the timing belt components in this order

24. Inspect the tensioner prior to installation of the old one as follows:  1. Visually check for any oil leakage. If there is only the faintest trace of oil on

the seal on the push rod side, the tensioner is still useable.  2. Using force against an sturdy object facing upwards only, press the rod to

see if there is no movement. If the rod moves, replace the tensioner.  3. Using a press, slowly press the timing belt tensioner until the holes of the

pushrod and housing align. Insert a 1.27mm hexagon Allen® wrench through the holes to preserve the setting position.

Fig. Remove the boot from the tensioner

Page 23: 1MZfe toyota timingbelt

Fig. Insert an Allen® head wrench through the hole of the tensioner

25. Install the dust boot to the tensioner.  26. Install the tensioner with the two bolts. Alternately tighten and then tighten the bolts

to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Remove the Allen® wrench.  27. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the crankshaft timing pulley groove with

the oil pump alignment mark.  28. Ensure the camshaft timing marks align with the timing marks on the rear timing

belt cover.  29. Install the timing belt guide.  30. Install the right engine mounting bracket and tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). 31. Install the No. 2 timing belt cover with the five bolts. Tighten the bolts to 74 inch

lbs. (8 Nm).  32. Install the engine wire protector clamp to the No. 3 timing belt cover.  33. Install the engine wire protector to the No. 3 timing belt cover with the bolt.  34. Install the No. 1 timing belt cover by installing the four bolts. Tighten the bolts to

74 inch lbs. (8 Nm).  35. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).  36. Install the No. 2 alternator bracket. Tighten the nut to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). Do not

tighten the pivot bolt at this time.  37. Install the No. 2 right engine mounting bracket and the moving control rod.  38. Install the right engine mounting stay.  39. Connect the two ground wire connectors.  40. Install and adjust the drive belts.  41. Install the coolant reservoir.  42. Install the right front splash shield and wheel assembly.  43. Connect the negative battery cable.  44. Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.  45. Recheck the ignition timing.
