Something AbidesDiscovering the Civil War in Today’s VermontHoward Coffi nAn eye-opening adventure—into the past
Civil War buff s make regular pilgrimages to the myriad Southern battlefi elds of the American Civil War to get a sense of what was at stake and what exactly happened during confl icts. Yet one of the best places to see the America of the Civil War era today is about 500 miles north of the war zone—in Vermont. Th is preservation-minded state, where just one minor Civil War battle took place, looks more as it did in the 1860s than any other state involved in the confl ict.
Now, in this new work, years in the making, historian Howard Coffi n takes the reader through every town in the Green Mountain State to document more than 3,000 sites that were in some way touched by the Civil War and are extant today. Not a theme-park guide to quaintly preserved structures, the sites identifi ed here are homes where soldiers lived and died, hospitals where they were treated, and halls where aboli-tionists spoke passionately.
A seventh-generation Vermonter with six ancestors who served in VT regiments, Howard Coffi n lectures extensively on the Civil War. He is also the author of Full Duty: Vermont in the Civil War; Nine Months to Gettysburg; and Th e Battered Stars (all Countryman titles). A former press secretary to U.S. senator James Jeff ords, Coffi n and his wife, Sue, live in Montpelier, VT.

Th e Vermont Farm Table Cookbook
Small, independent farms are the lifeblood of Vermont’s agriculture, from the sweet
corn grower to the dairy goat farmer to the cheesemaker whose locally sourced goat milk chevre becomes the heart of a new dish by a chef in Montpelier. While this farm-to-table cycle may be a phe-nomenon just hitting its stride in the United States, it has long been a way of life in Vermont, part of the ethos that Vermonters use to defi ne themselves. As such, Vermont ex-emplifi es a standard of small-scale, community-minded, unadulter-ated agriculture that has become a national model.
When Tracey Medeiros wrote Dishing Up Vermont in 2008, she wanted to showcase the chefs and restaurateurs who were dazzling taste buds with their fresh, whole-food creations. With Th e Vermont Farm Table Cookbook, Medeiros has traversed the Green Mountain State
once again, in search of not only those celebrated chefs but the hard-working farmers who provide them with their fresh and wholesome ingredi-ents as well. Collecting their stories and some 125 of their delicious, rustic-yet-refi ned, Vermont-inspired recipes, Medeiros presents an irresistible gastronomic portrait of this singular state.

An Eden of SortsThe Natural History of My Feral GardenJohn Hanson MitchellThe story of how land can blossom—literally—with proper management
Twenty-fi ve years ago John Hanson Mitchell cut down a 1½-acre stand of seventy-fi ve-year-old white pines and planted a garden in their place. An Eden of Sorts is a history of the plants and animals that lived on the tract over the next decades, including two generations of half-wild children!
In a survey he made before taking down the pines, Mitchell counted no more than fi ve or six fl owering plants and shrubs. Over the years he created a series of fanciful garden “rooms” in the Italian style. Now, in addition to a fl orid and intriguing garden of earthly delights, he has recorded more than one thousand species of plants and animals on the property.
Th is is a paradoxical yet hopeful narrative of what can happen to a plot of land when it is properly managed.
John Hanson Mitchell is the author of several books, including A Field Guide to Your Own Backyard (Countryman) and Ceremonial Time, and the editor of the award-winning natural history/environmental journal Sanctuary, pub-lished by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. He lives and gardens in Littleton, MA.

Connecticut WaterfallsRussell DunnPhotographs by Christy ButlerEasy access to cascades, cataracts, and more
Connecticut is rich in history, geology—and waterfalls. Bringing these together in one guide, richly illustrated by both photographs and an-tique postcards, Connecticut Waterfalls provides not only good directions and descriptions, but also historic and stratigraphic context for these thrilling yet peaceful places. Many of CT’s water-falls are now the centerpieces of parks and pre-serves—perfect for a weekend visit and picnic.
With a cartographic structure based on Con-necticut’s highways and roads, this book guides readers to waterfalls that are on public lands and also gives historical detail of the hidden falls now in private hands that at one time were open to all. Th is guide does more than get you there; it recounts southern New England’s once heavy reliance on water as a power source, with specifi c histories of mills, dams, and sluices. It also ad-dresses the recent reversion of many of these to their preindustrial state.
Russell Dunn is a New York State–licensed hik-ing guide and author of fi ve other waterfall guides to the nearby Adirondack, Catskill, and Hudson Valley regions as well as numerous hiking guides.
Photographer Christy Butler has published several posters of his waterfall images. He is also the creator of www.shoeboxphotos.net, a grant-funded project to restore and display photos taken by military veterans to provide insight into the military experience from those who served. In High Places with Henry David Th oreauThe New Hiker’s Guide to Thoreau’s Mountain TravelsJohn GibsonHiking routes let you explore the same areas of MA, NH, and ME that Thoreau explored
Th is is the essential guide for modern-day walk-ers and hikers eager to retrace Th oreau’s routes on New England’s peaks. Insights about Th oreau’s mountain journeys, excerpts from his trip nar-ratives, detailed topographical maps, and precise trail directions pave the way—fi guratively—for hikers who want to cover the same ground that Th oreau explored in the mid-19th century. With this inventive guide in hand, history and litera-ture buff s and outdoors enthusiasts alike can enjoy a dozen hikes and at least as many stories of what the trails were like in Th oreau’s day.
Th oreau was drawn to these high places because they are the natural world amplifi ed, the world thrust upward. Not to go there was un-thinkable. “We must go out and re-ally ourselves to Nature every day,” he wrote in 1856. “I am sen-sible that I am imbibing health when I open my mouth to the wind . . . Alone in distant woods or fi elds, I come to myself, I once more feel myself grandly related, and that cold and solitude are friends of mine.”
