1 st Beethoven International Piano & Chamber Music Competition 2022 INTRODUCTION The 1 st JMI Beethoven Piano Competition (Singapore) is organised to encourage and foster a high standard of piano playing and understanding of Beethoven works in the 21 st century musical world. This competition is opened to pianists of all nationalities from the age of 9. There is no upper age limit. There are 3 main categories with 2 subcategories each: Piano Solo Category - Junior (ages 9 to 13) - Youth (ages 13 to 17) Piano Solo with Concerto Categories - Collegiate (ages 17 to 24) - Artist (from ages 25 to no upper age limit) Piano Chamber Music Categories - Youth Piano Chamber Category (no lower age limit, up to age 20) - Professional Piano Chamber Category (from ages 18 to no upper limit) The focus on Beethoven’s works require competitors in the PIANO SOLO categories to be well equipped to compete with repertoire for TWO rounds. INTRODUCTION The 1st JMI Beethoven Piano Competition (Singapore) is organised to encourage and foster a high standard of piano playing and understanding of Beethoven works in the 21st century musical world. This competition is opened to pianists of all nationalities from the age of 9. There is no upper age limit. There are 3 main categories with 2 subcategories each:

Piano Solo Category - Junior (ages 9 to 13) - Youth (ages 13 to 17)

Piano Solo with Concerto Categories - Collegiate (ages 17 to 24) - Artist (from ages 25 to no upper age limit)

Piano Chamber Music Categories - Youth Piano Chamber Category (no lower age limit, up to age 20) - Professional Piano Chamber Category (from ages 18 to no upper limit)

The focus on Beethoven’s works require competitors in the PIANO SOLO categories to be well equipped to compete with repertoire for TWO rounds. There is only ONE FINAL Round for the PIANO CHAMBER MUSIC Categories.

Participants may compete in different categories. For example, a 16-year old may compete both in the Youth Piano Solo Category and in the Youth Piano Chamber Category. Applicants of more than one category must complete separate application forms and pay the required fees separately.

Competition Rules, Regulations and Application Procedures

All Contestants must abide by the following Rules:

1. Due to COVID-19 international travel restrictions still in place in Singapore at the point of which application opens, the organisers have decided that all judging rounds of this competition will be based on ONLINE format.

2. Submission dates: PIANO SOLO Categories – Junior, Youth, Collegiate, Professional

Preliminary Round: Recordings for all PIANO SOLO categories for the preliminary rounds are to be submitted via video links with fees from 15th November 2021 to 15th January 2022. Performers will be judged on their standards of playing based on a grading system - on their technique and musical expression. Successful candidates who qualify into the FINAL Round will be informed within 2 weeks of their submission (between 29 Nov 2021 to 31 Jan 2022).

Final Round: Successful candidates who qualify into the FINAL Round will need to send in recordings of their repertoire with video links and fees by Monday, 28th February 2022, 5pm. PIANO CHAMBER MUSIC Categories There is only ONE Round for these categories. The closing date for participants to send in their applications, video links and fees is Monday, 28th February 2022, 5pm.

3. Contestants in the PIANO SOLO categories who do not qualify into the Final Round will receive a JMI Certificate of Participation with result transcript.

4. Final Round: The names of all finalists scheduled for LIVE judging will be posted on our website. Judging of the Final rounds will be held LIVE online via Zoom from 7th to 10th

March 2022. The exact judging schedule for each category will be announced nearer the dates.

5. No changes to the repertoire are allowed across all rounds and categories once the applications are received.

6. The decisions of the Jury are final and not subjected to review or appeal.

7. The organizers have the rights to combine categories if there are less than 10 participants/groups in any category.

8. There will be no refund of competition fees if a participant withdraws from the competition at any point.

9. Masterclasses: Contestants who qualified into the final rounds may also sign up for masterclasses to study with available professors from 14th- 18th March 2022.

10. Candidates will be judged using a system of points. Prizes awarded to all pianists and chamber groups will be based on the highest total number of points scored.

11. Besides Cash and other prizes, outstanding winners will be invited to perform at the Beethoven Prize Winners’ Concert on 18th/19th March 2022 (to be confirmed) at The Arts House (Chamber Room) and the event will be covered on social media and streamed LIVE to audiences worldwide. The winner of the Beethoven Artist category will be invited to perform at the Victoria Concert Hall in June 2022 in SHINE! Concerto in Perspective with Joyeux Sinfonietta.

12. The organiser will hold all rights to contestants’ profiles, publicity material, video and audio recordings made over the entire competition period. Claims by third parties will not be acknowledged. The participants are not entitled to any financial compensation.

13. By submitting their application, all participants grant the organizer of the competition the right to publish personal details and use any videos for promotions.

Video Requirements

1. All competitors will be adjudicated by either Youtube or Vimeo links only. No other

format will be accepted. Please ensure that Youtube links are published Unlisted or Public, NOT Private. The contestant’s name and list of works must be clearly specified under JMI Beethoven Piano Competition 2022.

2. Video recordings of a high quality are recommended. The recordings submitted should be recent and not more than 6 months from the submission date. The organisers cannot be responsible for faulty video links or links that cannot be opened.

3. For all rounds of the competition, works must be performed without repeats within the time limits.

4. With the exception of Piano Chamber Works, ALL Piano Solo works and the Solo part in Concertos must be performed from memory.

5. Different works may recorded separately or as a whole. However different movements of a same work must be recorded at a single take e.g all movements of a complete sonata.

6. The camera shot must be stationary throughout the recording with the performer(s) hands and face fully in view throughout. No editing is allowed.

7. Recorded works or movement(s) of a work used in the Preliminary round may be repeated/re-recorded for the Final Round. Contestants will not be penalized or disadvantaged in any way.

Free choice, the 1st movement of a Beethoven Sonata composed for Piano with one of the following instruments: Violin, Flute, Horn or Cello. AND Free choice, TWO contrasting movements of a Beethoven Piano Trio, Quartet or Quintet, with any combination of strings or woodwind instruments.

Prizes and Awards: Prize Winners of all categories of the JMI Beethoven Piano & Chamber Music Competition 2022 will stand to win monetary prizes, a special trophy and special mention certificates. Top prize winners of the Solo and Chamber Music categories will be invited to perform at the Beethoven Prize Winners’ Concert, at The Arts House (Chamber Hall) Singapore. The top prize winner of the Beethoven Artist Category will win an opportunity to perform at the concert SHINE! Concertos in Perspective. All cash prizes are in Singapore Dollars, subject to the jury’s decisions. Prizes will only be awarded, subject to the jury’s unanimous agreement that the winners have attained which international standards of performance. Beethoven Artist Category (3 Top Prizes): Concerto Prize $1000, and Performance at SHINE! Concertos in Perspective 2nd prize: $800, 3rd prize: $500 Beethoven Collegiate Category: Top prize $800 Beethoven Youth Category: Top prize $500 Beethoven Junior Category: Top prize $300 Professional Chamber Music Category: Top Prize $800 Youth Chamber Music Category: Top Prize $500

In the event of a tie in the top prizes, the monetary rewards will be shared equally between the prize winners.

All Participants of PIANO SOLO categories will receive result transcripts and judged based on a total marking scheme of 150 points from the submitted repertoire to achieve the following prizes and awards. Customised plagues will be awarded to top winners. Laureate Prize: 145 – 150 points Honours Award: 140 – 144 points Distinction Award: 135 – 139 points Highly Commended: 130 – 134 points All other Participants: Certificate of Merit: 120 – 129 points Certificate of Participation: 119 and below

29th Nov. 2021 – 31st Jan 2022 Successful Contestants will be notified if they qualified into

the Final Round. Unsuccessful contestants will receive result transcript and certificates of Participation.

1st Feb – 28th Feb 2022, 5pm Successful Contestants submit videos and fees for the Final

Round. Those who choose not to continue with the competition will receive a Certificate of Merit and result transcript of the Preliminary Round.

28th Feb 2022, 5pm Closing Date for ALL categories, including PIANO Chamber

Music Categories. 4th March 2022 Name of all Finalists will be published on the website. 7th – 10th March 2022 Final Round, with LIVE judging of the videos over Zoom. Exact schedule will be posted on the website.
