Slide 4 / 91
What is technology?
Brainstorm with a partner some examples of technology you use and try to come up with a way
to explain what technology is.
Slide 5 / 91
Did you think of any of these items?
Examples of technology
Slide 6 / 91
Technology is equipment used today to store, get or send information.
We think of computers and computer networks when we think of technology, but it can also be things that distribute, or send information such as television, satellites, parts of cars, and telephones.
What is technology?
Slide 7 / 91
Technology helps us to communicate with one another.
What are some ways we can communicate using our phones?
We can use them for more than just talking.
Ways We Use Technology
Slide 8 / 91
What about the technology you find in a car?
What do people use to figure out where to go or find their
way if they are lost?
How is the satellite related to this?
Ways We Use Technology
Slide 9 / 91
We use technology in our military to help us track down people and places.
It also helps us move our big ships and machinery.
Ways We Use Technology
Slide 10 / 91
We can think of technology as any equipment we use to
STORE, GET, and SEND information.
What ways do you use technology for fun?
What is technology?
Slide 11 / 91
It can also be used to improve
our health.
Can you think of other ways technology is used in medicine?Talk about this at your table and be
prepared to share your ideas!
Ways We Use Technology
Slide 12 / 91
Can you think of other ways we can preserve information about our families for the future?
It can be a big help in saving important memories.

Using Our Senses to Gain Information
Return to Table of Contents
Slide 28 / 91
Our sense of sight, hearing
and touch are all used when we
use certain technology
devices.
Our Senses and Technology
Slide 29 / 91
Vision
Our sense of sight requires light waves in order to work.
What technologies require the use of sight?
Brainstorm at your table!
Slide 30 / 91
Sense of SightWe need our vision when we use different types of devices.
The device must be using visible light waves. That means the light is traveling to produce or make an
image that we can see. We see these waves as the colors of the rainbow.
Slide 31 / 91
HearingOur sense of hearing requires sound waves in order to work.
What technologies require the use of hearing?
Brainstorm at your table!
Slide 32 / 91
Sense of Hearing
We hear sound waves. Particles vibrate or move back and forth, allowing us to hear sounds. Technology uses the sound waves in certain devices.
Slide 33 / 91
Sound waves can give us information, even if we don't hear them. Two examples of this are sonar and
ultrasound machines!
Technology Using Sound Waves
Slide 34 / 91
Sense of Touch
Our sense of touch requires feeling vibrations in order to work.
What technologies require the sense of touch?
Brainstorm at your table!
Slide 35 / 91
Sense of Touch
When we use our sense of touch, we rely on forces to be able to feel. Not only do we sense patterns on our skin's surface, but we also have to use the positioning of our bodies. There are many technologies which require our sense of touch.
Slide 36 / 91
Before certain technologies were invented, if you lost a hand
or leg, you were very limited. Now people can compete in
sports and live very well.

Doctors use sound vibrations to hear what is happening on the inside of our bodies.
Slide 51 (Answer) / 91
Sonar : Sound Navigation and Ranging
Sonar uses sound to communicate with or find objects under the surface of the water.
Certain animals use Sonar as well - can you think of any?
Slide 52 / 91
Microphones
Microphones change sound waves into electrical waves so that it can be sent to a speaker so you can hear the sound waves better.
Computers also have microphones which helps us communicate by using
Skype for example.
Slide 53 / 91
"Voice Activated"
Have you seen people talking to their phones? Or even talking to their car?
If an electronic device is voice or sound activated, sound waves are translated into electronic messages.
This icon means you can talk to the device.
Slide 54 / 91
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a technology used by doctors and veterinarians. They can see an image of what is inside a
person or animal. Ultrasound technology uses sound waves to view inside the body because it is easier and safer than
an X-ray.

Gaining Information Using Radio Waves
Return to Table of Contents
Slide 64 / 91
Radio CommunicationRadio waves transmit music, conversations, pictures and data invisibly through the air, often over millions of miles --
it happens every day in thousands of different ways! Which of these do you use?
Slide 65 / 91
We use radio waves to send information and communicate. Radio waves link cell phones over great distances.
Your cell satellite satellite satellite cell your cell tower dish dish tower friend's phone
Cell Phones Use Radio Waves
Slide 66 / 91
Cell Phones Use Radio Waves
If the cell phones are near to each other, the path is shorter.
This cell phone tower is "disguised"
as a tree.
Slide 67 / 91

Wireless Radio waves
What wireless devices can you name?
Slide 68 / 91
Wireless Devices

Slide 69 / 91
Radio Waves
Radio waves are all around us, everyday, all the time.
We can not see, hear or feel them.
How do the waves get to the right device? The radio waves actually go everywhere. They have a frequency
that is specific for the receiver. Do you remember frequency from the unit on sound we did earlier this year?
So, your radio controlled car is not started by the garage door opener, even if it is in the garage.
