Loving the modern-day judas iscariot

The dawning of 2015 brought a whole new level of the unknown for me as my work with young women morphed into working with juvenile delinquents. I am not naturally the syrupy sweet, total-mercy type, and in a way, this has allowed me to be a ready candidate for a ministry that requires a certain level of grit and austerity. However, with it came the challenge of learning how to show love and affection to people who have reached this level of behavior because they are deeply wounded in some way. Thus began God’s lessons to me through the life of Judas:

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:21

These points have prompted me to remember that just as Jesus did, I must speak the truth to the juveniles I cross paths with. However, if they do not respond to that truth, it is not my call to label my relationship with them as unproductive. Instead, I need to open my eyes to the fact that I have been commissioned to love individuals who are part of God’s sovereign plan, and who need to be valued as people made in the image of a gracious Heavenly Father. All of us know who the “unlovable” person is in our life. Let’s focus on loving them as Jesus loved Judas.

living in your identity

I have an eternal inheritance in heaven:

“…to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that fadeth not away, reserved for you in heaven.” I Peter 1:4

1.) Jesus called this traitor to follow Him for 2 years of ministry. He traveled, talked, ate and shared lodging with the man who would one day betray Him to His enemies. During this time, He imparted the truth to Judas who was present for the Sermon on the Mount and all manner of other teachings.2.) With the full knowledge that Judas would betray Him to His enemies, Jesus knelt and washed Judas’ feet before inviting him to partake of what would become communion - the remembrance of his body and blood.3.) Jesus loved and served Judas unconditionally. He recognized that Judas was an instrument in God’s redemptive plan.

Let GoFrancois Fenelon’s letters to various acquaintances during his life point us to our true calling as Christians - it is not us who live, but Christ who lives in us. This little booklet has been a powerful reminder to all who read it to “die daily” and learn what it truly means to love God, love others and view self as a servant of Christ.

prayer requests:

Why Is My Sibling Doing This?Dear sisters and brothers of a prodigal,

I know that you struggle to understand why your sibling is the way they are. How did they become the person they are today, and why is it that after growing up with them, you hardly know them at all anymore? Why can’t they see that their choices are destroying them, destroying you, worrying and hurting your parents and breaking your family apart?

You are not alone - and surprisingly, the primary answer to all of the above questions is very simple: your sibling does not understand who God is, and therefore they do not understand who they are. They do not understand who others were created to be in their life.

I know that you are tempted to look down on them for their choices; to be angry with them because of all the countless ways they are ruining your life and changing your future. I know that the stupidity of their decisions makes it easy to believe that they are somehow sick, and you are well. That they are bad, and you are good. But really, the difference between you is God and grace. It means that you believe the truth, and they do not. Why? Because they have received the lies of satan, the lies of their own opinion and the lies of their peers over the facts in God’s Word to the point that it has changed who they are, what they do, and what they live for.

Remember when you hurt that hurting people hurt others. Your pain is a product of their pain…much of which is likely self-inflicted. Remember that you have an outlet for your pain in Jesus Christ, and that they most likely do not. Remember that you are capable of the same, horrible behaviors they have indulged in - your sin nature is in no way above or beyond their low choices. And as you remember these things, be an imitator of God as His dear child. Because Jesus didn’t come for the righteous or the healthy. He came for the sinners and the sick. He has raised us up and empowered us to believe and trust Him for the same purpose.

Do not let yourself waste away in the hurt your sibling brings to your family, or you will become a mass of pain that only creates more pain in others. You will become a victim of your sibling’s destructive cycle. Trust, pray and love.
