Advent: Making the Holidays Holy, not Hectic This time of year is commonly called the “Holiday Season” among Christians and non-Christians alike. “Holiday” is simple an old-English word for holy day. However, I think many people would call this season the hectic days. In order to make these holidays ho-ly and not hectic, we need to begin by making the firm decision that we want to set these days aside as sacred.
Advent is a time to prepare to commemorate the birth of Jesus 2,000 years ago, but it is about much more than that. Advent is also a sacred time to prepare and repair our hearts so that our Lord will find a renewed and longing heart for Him. The third aspect of Advent, which is equally important, is that it’s a time to “wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior Jesus Christ” at His second and final coming. Here are a few recommendations to make the holidays holy, not hectic:
Decorate your home and office using the Advent color of violet.
Place an Advent wreath at your dinner table or your prayer corner. (You can find prayers for the Ad-vent
wreath online.)
Listen to Advent Music. (See http://catholic-resources.org/Lectionary/Seasons-Advent-Christmas.htm)
25 Days of Prayer and Compassion– Free book and online version available in English and Spanish.
Little Blue Books – Available in English and Spanish.
House of Prayer Videos – We will be showing a short video on ways to pray a couple of times each month before the closing prayer at Sunday Mass.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation: In addition to our regular Confession times, we will also have an Ad-
vent Penance Service on December 14th at 7:00 p.m.
Celebrate Advent with Our Lady: the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (a holy day) is December 8th,
and the Solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe is December 12th.

After Masses on December 12 & 13
The homeless are just that. They wear the same clothes day and night and carry their posses-sion with them. With cold weather upon us, they need washable sleeping bags and lightweight fleece throws. The homeless in our area - who are predominately men —need warm outdoor
jackets, preferably weather-proof, that are large enough to accommodate multiple layers of clothing underneath. (No dress jackets or coats, please!) The men also need: sweatshirts, long-sleeve shirts, socks (L), gloves, knit scarves, and hooded plastic ponchos.
WELCOME INN volunteers will be at St. Edward the Confessor Church after Masses on December12 & 13 to collect these items
that they will distribute to the homeless in our area.

Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted sui-cide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medication to terminally ill patients. Join a coalition of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organizations, and people of
all faiths to stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! Today petitions will be available for signature outside of Masses.
Signers must be registered to vote and can only sign once. Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide for the terminally ill, while dis-
couraging it for the rest of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and disabled do not matter to our society.
Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other states, like Barbara Wagner in
Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide.
Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted
suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.

bouquets placed on the pedestals in the sanctuary for weekend masses. We have made arrangements with a local florist, McCool Flowers to have the bouquets delivered weekly to the church. Bouquets can be sponsored for $60 each, and we will acknowledge your donation in the bulletin. Please go to the parish office to reserve your date and make payment for the flowers, and we will do the rest! Please do not contact McCool’s directly as they do not keep a record of who reserved each weekend.

Brighten the Holidays for Someone Less Fortunate
Here are three simple ways that you and your family can share the joy of Christmas with a local poor person or family.
1. Adopt-a-Family. If you are willing to provide food and gifts for a family this Christmas, please select an envelope from the Christmas tree which will be in the vestibule of the church on November 29th. On the front of each envelope will be the number of members in the family listed inside. Instructions and information about the family you selected are also inside the envelope.
2. Donate a gift card. Give joy anonymously to someone in need by donating a gift card for food (grocery stores like Ralphs or Albertsons) or for clothing or necessities (Walmart,
Target, CVS). Put your gift card in the Christian Service Gift Box in the St. Edward Parish Office by Tuesday, December 15th.
3. Donate a toy. Help bring joy to a child! Please leave an unwrapped new or hand-crafted toy in the decorated box in the vestibule of the church by Tuesday, December15th.
May God Bless You Christian Service and St. Vincent de Paul Ministries
