In2005,theA&BFoundation–thankstothegenerosityofitsfundingcorporation–hadanexceptionalyearwithmorethan
$2milliongiventocharitableorganizationsthroughoutHawaii,inthePacificregion,andontheU.S.Mainland.Arecordnumber
ofgrantswereawardedto493separatenon-profits.
Thisincreaseingrant-makingactivitywasdue,inpart,totwospecialprograms.Theseprogramswerecreatedtosupportthedesireof
A&Bemployeestoprovidehelp—waybeyondourshores—tothoseimpactedbythetwodevastatingnaturaldisastersof2005.Hundreds
ofpersonaldonationsmadebyA&BemployeestotsunamireliefeffortsaroundtheIndianOceanandtohurricanereliefintheU.S.
GulfCoastwerematched,dollar-for-dollar,bytheA&BFoundation.Whileheartbreakingtowitnesssuchextensiveloss,itwasuplifting
towitnessandsupportthebigandsmalleffortsthatgrewfromeachindividual’svowtohelpafriend,neighbororstrangerinneed.
Thisyear’sHawaiiantheme“Kokua Kekahi I Kekahi”translatesto‘helpingoneanother.’Itexpressesthespiritthatbringsneighbors
closeandstrangerscloserastheyworktogether—withtheutmostofcompassion,commitmentandoptimism—tomaketomorrow
betterthantoday.Helpingoneanother,throughgoodtimesandbad,strengthensthetiesweshareanddependupon—particularly
inourislandcommunities.
Forthethirdyear,kokua(help)fromtheA&BFoundationwasprovidedtomeetpriorityneedsofourcommunities,identifiedby
A&Bemployeeswholiveandworkinthosecommunities—drugprevention,homeownership,cleancommunitiesandthedevelopment
ofouryouth.Boostingoureffortsintheseareaswasthekokua,thevolunteersupport,fromourA&Bemployees.Theyliftedtheframeof
ahouseforanewhomeowneronKauaiandinstalledsidingandwallboardforotherhomeownersonMaui.Theycombedthecoastlines
inHawaii,California,Guam,PhoenixandChicagofortrash,protectingourmarineenvironment.Theycared,andtheyhelped.
InadditiontotheA&BFoundation’sactivities,ourfundingcompany,A&B,providedadditionalcharitablecontributionstotaling
nearly$180,000.Addtothatthepersonaldonationsofemployeesandretireesofover$250,000,theA&Bohana(family)contributed
ameaningful$2.5millionin2005tomakeourcommunitiesahealthyandsafeplacetolive,workandraiseafamily.

Youth Empowering Systems - Conference on Chemical Dependency ($5,000)
Drugsandalcoholaredisablingouryouthandourfamilies,therefore,YouthEmpoweringSystemsorganizedatwo-daystatewidetrainingconferenceonsubstanceabuseinDecember2005.NationallyrecognizedexpertsandkeynotespeakerswerebroughttoMauitoaddressadolescentbehaviorsrelatedtochemicaldependency,preventionandtreatment,andsupporttheeducators,counselorsandcommunitymemberswhoarehelpingtofightthebattleagainstdrugs.
Prepare Fairs ($30,000)
TwohomebuyereducationfairswerepresentedforthefirsttimeonKauaiintendedtoinform,prepareandencouragefirst-timehomeownership.Theyweredubbed,formarketingpurposes,PrepareFairs,whichincludedworkshoppresen-tationsfromcontractors,Realtors,andself-helphousingofficials,offeringtheirexpertise.Fundedin2004,theA&BFoundationworkedwiththeContractorsAssociationofKauaiandSelf-HelpHousingCorporationofHawaiitocoordi-natetwoeventsthatdrewstrongparticipationfromexhibitorsandresidents—over300attendeesperfair.AthirdfaironKauaiisbeingfunded,plannedwithanApril29,2006date.
Habitat for Humanity - Maui ($10,000) and Kauai ($15,000) Oneofthewaysafamilycanownahomeisby‘sweatequity.’HabitatforHumanityofferslow-incomeresidentsanoppor-tunitytobuildtheirhomealongwiththesupportandexpertiseoftheconstructionindustryandvolunteers.AleadsponsorshipgrantfromtheA&BFoundationforHabitat’sBuild-a-ThoneventsonMauiandKauai,enabledtheorganizationtoraiseawarenessabouttheeventandHabitat’smis-sion,increasevolunteersupportandinterestfromprospectivefirst-timehomebuilders.OnSaturday,June25,hundredsofvolunteersacrossthestatehelpednewhome-ownersrealizetheirdream.

InrecognitionoftheMauiCulinaryAcademy’ssuccessfulpartnershipswiththelocalagriculturalcommunity,andforitsachievementsintrainingstudentstoworkin—andtoestablish—Maui’sfinestfoodandbeverageestablishments,theA&BFoundationestablishedthefirstendowedculinaryartsscholarshipattheAcademy.TheA&BCulinaryArtsScholarshipwillbeawardedtoaculinaryartsstudentwhograduatedfromaMauihighschool.

Hawaii Forest Institute ($1,500) - The A&B Foundation is a sponsor of the inaugural issue of the Hawaii Forest Institute’s (HFI) Hawaii Forest Journal: A Publication for Environmental Stewardship. Hawaii Home-Ownership Center ($5,000) - The Hawaii HomeOwnership Center (HHOC) conducts homebuyer educa-tion classes statewide for potential first-time
homeowners in Hawaii. The orientation and course offer financial literacy training, one-on-one and post-purchase counseling, referrals to professional services, and links to affordable products. HHOC celebrated its 100th homeowner in 2005.
Hawaii Foodbank ($10,000) - The
students at Lanakila Elementary School
receive fresh fruits and vegetables every week
through the Ohana Produce Program. In
2004, the Hawaii Foodbank provided 31,000 pounds of
produce to students and their families.

Castle Medical Center ($10,000) - The A&B Foundation provided funds for the expansion and renovation of a three-story, 15,000 square foot wing. Additional improvements include increasing the number of surgical patient rooms and telemetry (heart monitoring) beds, housing for the Joint Care Center and Rehab/Physical Therapy Center.
American Cancer Society ($5,000) - The American Cancer Society’s Camp Anuenue celebrated its 20th anniversary with its annual camp at Mokuleia and a special reunion for camp attendees who are cancer survivors across the state. The A&B Foundation
supported camp and reunion activities for participants from Maui and Kauai.
Community Links Hawaii
($10,000) - Non-profit
organizations seeking help with
administration, financial/accounting and human resource services and grantwriting may benefit from
Community Links Hawaii. The new Hawaii orga-nization can provide back-office support as well as serving as a fiscal sponsor for worthy organizations
that have not acquired charitable, tax-exempt status.

Waianae Maritime Academy ($4,000) - A donation to the Waianae Maritime Academy is helping to train men and women for entry-level posi-tions in Hawaii’s maritime industry, from deckhands and engine room personnel on merchant marine vessels of all sizes, to tug boats and luxury liners. The Waianae Maritime Academy has provided 133 graduates with the skills they need to work in the maritime industry.
Arizona Memorial Museum Association ($25,000) - A $100,000 pledge was made in support of the reno-vation, expansion and creation of the new Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum and Visitor Center to accommodate the museum’s 1.5 million annual visitors. The
new experience includes increased space for exhibits, artifacts and memorabilia surrounding the Pearl Harbor attack and early World War II in the Pacific.

YMCA of Kauai ($7,500) - Matson’s Dewayne Kong and A&B Properties’ Tom Shigemoto presented the final payment of the A&B Foundation’s $17,500 pledge to Patrick Childs, YMCA of Kauai board president. Kauai’s first central facility will be built in Puhi and includes a swim-ming pool, multi-purpose room and fitness/wellness center.
Hale Makua Foundation
($10,000) - Hale Makua’s expanded
Kahului facility was funded in part
by a grant from A&B. The 16-bed
rehabilitation unit (pictured) is part of the rehabilitation center including
a gym, dining areas, and kitchen. Completion of this project is expect-

Kihei Youth Center ($3,000) - Kihei Youth Center launched an afterschool pro-gram based on Hawaiian cultural education. One of the components includes tending to the Maalaea Community Garden. A grant from the A&B Foundation helped to prepare the property for planting, pur-chasing planting materials and maintenance.

Connor Prairie Living History Museum ($1,000) - Follow the North Star, Conner Prairie’s award-winning program, immerses participants in the 19th-century struggle for freedom and the Underground Railroad. While taking on the role of fugitive slaves, participants reflect on their own choices and strengths while being engaged in the past.
Kauai Children’s Discovery Museum ($2,000) - A unique exhibit has been designed for students, families and newcomers to Kauai. Kids’ Kauai is a kid’s eye view of the Garden Island with exhibit stations describing the plants, animals, and natu-ral history of Kauai.

students, parents, faculty and staff
are benefiting from a new outdoor bulletin board displaying messages about report cards and school activi-ties. School teachers and the PTSA organized
several fundraisers to meet their goal.
Mills College($5,000) - A&B provided general operating support to Mills College, a liberal
arts college for women with graduate programs
for women and men. Located in Oakland, CA the college offers
41 undergraduate degrees and 23 graduate and certificate programs.

TheFoundation’sVolunteerMatchingGiftprogramwascreatedtoencour-
ageandsupportemployeevolunteerism.A&Bemployeeswhogivetimefromtheirbusyschedulestocommunitycausescanearna$250donationtothatcauseforjust25hoursofdonatedtime.
Allorganizationswitha501(c)(3)taxexemptstatusareeligiblefortheVolunteerMatchingGiftsprogram.Recipientstodateincludeyouthsportsorganizations,boyandgirlscouts,environmentalcauses,churches,schools,performingartsgroups,retirementhomes,andhealthandhumanserviceorganizations.
HerearetwoexamplesofhowtheVolunteerMatchingGiftsprogramhasbenefitedboththeemployeeandtheirorganization.

San Francisco Sailing Whaleboat Association ($2,500) - A grant from the A&B Foundation supported training activities of Sea Scouts in maritime operations, both at sea and ashore. Additional funds were provided to help salvage and repair one of its training ships.

(A-D) International Coastal Cleanup’s Get the Drift &
Bag It! – Employees from A&B, Matson, HC&S, A&B
Properties, and Matson Integrated Logistics in Hawaii, Guam and on the Mainland, collectively covered
several miles of coastlines collecting trash and debris to
preserve the marine environment.
(E) Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation – HC&S employ-ees were ready to “Walk to Cure
Diabetes” in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation held
on Maui and raised $1,800 for diabetes research.
(F, K) American Red Cross Hats Off – A&B and Matson
employees in Honolulu held out their hats to collect funds from
the public on behalf of the American Red Cross.
(G) Hawaii Foodbank Food Drive – In one week, employees on Oahu collected 1,562 pounds of food and
$4,555 in support of the Hawaii Foodbank’s Spring Food Drive. A
check was presented to Hawaii Foodbank President Dick Grimm.
(H) American Cancer Society Relay for Life – Kauai Coffee® Company employees participated in the 12-hour race rounding the
track and raising funds for cancer research and programs.
(I) Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk – Over 15 Bay Area Matson and
Matson Integrated Logistics employ-ees took part in the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society’s “Light the Night Walk” raising over $10,000 for
leukemia and lymphoma research.
(J) Special Olympics Hawaii Summer Games – A&B and
Matson employees on Oahu run the softball throw event and enthusiasti-
cally cheer on the athletes.
(L, M) Habitat for Humanity Build-a-Thon – On Maui and Kauai, A&B employees provided
‘sweat equity’ to help build homes for local families.
Mel Kawano,financemanageratKahuluiTrucking&StorageonMaui,hasbeeninvolvedwiththeMauiJuniorGolfAssociationforfouryearsandcurrentlyservesastreasurerfortheorganization.Hisdaughter,KelcieAnn,ajuniorgolferandsophomoreatMauiHighSchoolistheprimaryreasonforMel’sinvolvement.Inadditiontohistreasurer’sresponsibilities,Melalsohelpsatgolftournaments,withyouthclinics,andfundraisesfortheassociation.Hehasseentremendousgrowthinthejuniormembersandtheorganization,andheisproudtobeapartoftheMauiJuniorGolfAssociation’ssuccess.
Linda Lowell,administrativeassis-tantatMatsonNavigationCompanyinPhoenix,AZisadedicatedvol-unteerfortheMuscularDystrophyAssociation.Herfriendshipwithco-workerJacquettaJohnsonandherhusband,whohasMuscularDystrophy,promptedhertobecomeinvolved.Lindahasseenfirst-handhowhisqualityoflifehasimprovedasaresultofMDA’sprogramsandservices.Forthepastthreeyears,shehasbeen“arrested”forhavingabigheartandhasparticipatedinMDA’sLockUpwhichraisesfundsforMDAprogramsandresearch.
