The Mavericks and Hunter Hayes Provide A LITTLE NIGHT of MUSICThe Mavericks, after an eight-year hiatus, have reunited and luckily for PENCIL their first Nashville appearance was at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum for A LITTLE NIGHT of MUSIC. Presenting Sponsor and Producer Creative Artists Agency once again recruited two incredible acts who entertained a crowd of more than 200 public education sup-porters. Complimenting the unique sound of The Mavericks, who seamlessly fuse elements of 60s rock-and-roll and country while adding a hint of Spanish flair, was special guest Hunter Hayes, a multi-talented new artist climbing up the country charts. The evening began with a silent auction featuring more than 70 items. CAA created an online auction of more than 20 items that included a trip and concert packages that also helped raise funds to support Nash-ville public school students through PENCIL programs. PENCIL is grateful to John Gauder and Jeff Gregg, who served as General Chairman of the event and to Scott Borchetta and Jesse Register for serving as Honorary Chairman. What an incredible evening of music and support for public education! The event raised $116,000 for PENCIL programs.

BRAVO to 30 Years of Volunteerism
PENCIL celebrated 30 years of PENCIL Partners and volunteers at BRAVO!, present-ed by Ford Partnership for Advanced Stud-ies, where 300 guests gathered to honor out-standing organizations and individuals that go above and beyond in support of Nashville public schools.
Mayor Karl Dean presented the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding School Partner to Donelson Church of Christ for its part-nership with McGavock Elementary. As a
first-year PENCIL Partner, the church hit the ground running from day one – volunteering, providing financial and in-kind donations and reaching out to McGavock families in need. Church members have provided weekly tutoring to 50 students, have helped struggling fami-lies with lunch money and clothing and provided a $1000 gift certificate for Standard School Attire. In partnership with Soles4Souls, the church also provided a new pair of shoes to every student in the school.
Honorable Mention in this category went to AMEC for its partnership with McMurray Middle, Dollar General Corporation for its 25-year partnership with Hattie Cotton Elementary and Vulcan Materials, PENCIL Partner to Una Elementary.
Deloitte received the Outstanding System-Wide Partner-ship Award for its contribution not only to PENCIL Part-ner Warner Elementary but for its partnerships with Career Academies at both Antioch and Overton High, mentoring for middle school girls in Art2STEM, and other contributions that reach across the district. In the past school year, Deloitte vol-unteers provided 2,456 volunteer hours, and $119,650 in in-kind donations and other gifts. They provided a $10,000 Dual Enrollment Scholarship for students at Overton and Antioch high, hosted job shadow days and presented 12 $100 scholar-ships to Academy Students of the Year.

Mayor Dean Honored for Commitment to Metro Schools
PENCIL is proud to honor a community leader each year at BRAVO! who has gone above and beyond in their support and commitment to public education in Nashville. This year’s winner of the E. Bronson Ingram Award, in honor of In-gram, a PENCIL founder and board member, is Mayor Karl F. Dean. Since elected in 2007, Mayor Dean has consistently made high quality education for Nashville his number one priority.
In 2010 Dean encouraged community engagement in schools by signing an executive order allowing Metro Government employees an hour a week of volunteer time in Metro schools.
The same year, he created a task force consisting of more than 50 Nashville leaders, charged with developing Nashville’s first Child and Youth Master Plan. Mayor Dean has mobilized the private sector to donate millions of dollars to bring Teach for America and the New Teach-ers Project to Nashville. Teach for America now has 130 Corps members in our schools, with another 100 joining in the fall.
Mayor Dean launched a citywide taskforce focused on reducing the number of dropouts, called the Project for Student Success. One outcome is the highly acclaimed Nashville After Zone Alliance, known as NAZA, which provides high quality afterschool programming for low income middle school students in the Stratford, Maplewood, Glencliff, and Overton clusters, with plans to add the Pearl-Cohn and Whites Creek clusters in the fall. PENCIL coordinates programs in the Glencliff and Overton clusters. Mayor Dean is also an active member of the PENCIL Foundation Board of Directors and the Academies of Nashville CEO Champions group led by the Nashville Chamber, as well as Alignment Nashville.
This is just a snapshot of the incredible contributions Mayor Dean has made to public educa-tion. Congratulations, Mayor Dean and many thanks for making education a priority.
PENCIL’s Volunteer of the Year
When acclaimed watercolor artist and teacher gail McDaniel learned from public school art teachers about the lack of funding for art programs, she want-ed to help. Beginning small in 2001 gail created a mini grant opportunity for teachers by donating pro-ceeds from a watercolor workshop. Soon after, gail and her husband, Ken, began hosting a luncheon and auction in their home called the “Chase Away the Blahs Party.” Over the past 11 years, the McDaniels
have raised almost $90,000 in support of art education.
LP PENCIL Box, is also a recipient of gail’s extraordinary efforts to support the arts. Nearly $26,000 has been given to PENCIL to purchase special art supplies to be distributed to Metro teachers, who receive two free shopping trips each school year. Congratulations, gail. Thank you for all of your support of art education.
