vessels for the offshore wind industry. Plarad UK provides them with a reliable and accomplished partner, well versed in all technical areas of the wind energy industry.

Dear reader,

the fledgling wind energy industry can expect to maintain fast rates of growth in the foreseeable future. Apart from solutions to the technical challenges that need to be overcome, success in this area largely requires a sound and reliable political foundation. Boasting an offshore power output of nearly 3,000 MW and just under 1,000 wind power plants installed in the North Sea, Great Britain is

leading the pack on an international scale. In Germany, the current wind energy output harvested from the wind and fed into the grid is 500 MW. The plan is to increase this number to 25,000 MW by the year 2030. This edition will inform you about the efforts our Plarad team in Great Britain contributes to the expansion of offshore wind energy exploitation.

You will also learn about the connection between Plarad and the European X-Ray Laser Project and which benefits our new website has to offer to our visitors.

Aside from the classic bolted connection, there are numerous interesting applications for which our pneumatically and electrically powered nutrunners are the perfect fit as they offer the user tremendous ease of use, shortened work times and, better still, improved operational safety. In this edition, we include two reports that can serve as an example. Please allow me at this point to draw your attention to the next edition of our Plarad News which will focus on the possible applications of our cordless, battery-powered nutrunners.

I hope you will enjoy reading our latest news. Sincerely yours,

Dr. Klaus Rodemann, Managing Director Maschinenfabrik Wagner GmbH & Co. KG – Plarad

Successful custom solutions involving Plarad Construction of a tunnel that is more than two kilometres long and used for the European X-Ray Laser Project XFEL is now complete. Tunnel construction company ARGE Tunnel XFEL used Plarad bolting systems to stabilise the underground hall in which the work took place.

Starting in 2016, the European XFEL will generate intensive X-ray flashes, allowing scientists to investigate, for example, the atomic structure of biomolecules, pathogens, and numerous new and existing materials, as well as film chemical reactions. The tunnel drilling machine TULA (TUnnel for LAser) dug its way through the ground over a period of six months. Just behind the disc wheel, more than 8000 concave concrete slabs were used to form the tunnel wall. The bottom of the tunnel was then furnished with concrete slabs under which parts of the infrastructure were laid at a later point in time. A tool of the Plarad K series was then used to bolt down approx. 800 threaded rods at 12,000 Nm in an effort to stabilise the bottom. n

Unrivalled 24/7 service

Available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, the technical service provided by Plarad UK comprised service visits on the ships which became necessary several times a year. These service consultations led to a close cooperation between the crew and the team of Plarad UK, which proved exceptionally useful as early as the planning stage of these large-scale projects. These strong ties help all parties involved see through the entire project starting with the planning stage and are the foundation for regular training sessions and numerous workshops. Communicating the professional expertise necessary to safely operate bolting equipment is paramount given the strict safety standards applicable to all sectors of industry.

Projects currently supported by Plarad UK Ltd.

Among others, Plarad UK Ltd. currently provides assistance to MPI Adventure, the Trianel Borkum West Project (Areva 5 MW turbines) as well as the Seajacks Zaratan Meerwind project (Siemens 3.5 MW turbines). As a result of the ever rising number of offshore installations, most specialised jack-up vessels are chartered several years in advance.

Both MPI Offshore and Seajacks have found a dedicated and reliable partner in Plarad UK, who will continue to share their exceptional technology, first-rate tools, unsurpassed know-how and utmost reliability with them in the future. n

Plarad in action

Plarad has the solution: Completing the rotations is a cinch when you use a DEM 08 or DPM 08 made by Plarad. Special sockets can be designed to adapt the nutrunner to the gate valve. This makes it possible to also use the tool for turning hand wheels when combined with additional accessories. Plarad always supplies the most suitable solution. n

Until recently, underground gate valves were opened and closed with the help of a hydraulic, self-constructed tool or by hand.

This type of procedure was rather cumbersome and required a great deal of force. In many cases, opening and closing an underground gate valve requires up to 70 rotations.

To increase their service life, the exchangers are cleaned and inspected at regular intervals. In this context, the use of (electric or pneumatic) Plarad nutrunners have proved to be of great benefit as they make it easier to open and close the individual plate packs.

Plate heat exchangers are used across a wide variety of industries (such as steelworks, the chemical industry or refineries, for instance, during the production of sugar).

The separation of drive and force transmission (drive freely rotates 360°) translates to superior safety for the user. Plarad works out the best possible solution. Plarad does not consider special requirements a problem, but regards them as a challenge that is a pleasure to overcome. n

We use our CAD system to generate a 3D model that is based on this data. Our comprehensive range of products allows us to always find the most economical solution for you. If necessary, we will customise the bolting tools until they fit your bolting case perfectly.

You provide us with the particulars of your bolting application (in a freehand sketch, bolting questionnaire or previously created CAD files, etc.).

You will receive our suggested solution as a printout and 3D model in the file format you request.

As you can use these models during your future construction stages as well, you will be able to implement all of your subsequent projects without any problems.
