S BEN RAJA‘It’s not a thump but a rumble,’

said Royal Enfi eld CEO Sid-dhartha Lal when reporters asked him what kind of sound the new 650 cc engine produces. If you didn’t understand what I was re-ferring to, well, Royal Enfi eld un-veiled two brand new fl agship of-ferings Continental GT 650 and Interceptor to the world at the EICMA auto show in Milan recent-

ly. The bikes which were tested in every nook and corner of India for a good two years has fi nally seen

the day of light.While the bike was on test

for a long time, it was recently learnt that Royal Enfi eld would be launching two different offer-ings with the same engine. As per spy-shots, one was a cafe racer just like the existing Continental GT 535 and the other one was a retro street bike on the lines of Triumph Boneville. The bikes have got typical Royal Enfi eld de-

sign language which is simple, yet purposeful. While the chassis has been developed by the brand’s

subsidiary, Harris Performance, the other crucial components like shock absorbers, tyres, etc., have been outsourced as usual.

Coming to the important aspect - which is the engine - all this time, enthusiasts were expecting a 750 cc twin cylinder engine. But, Roy-al Enfi eld rendered every rumour to shame by launching a 650 cc mill. When asked why a 650 cc was chosen, Siddhartha Lal, said,

‘750 will be too powerful for Royal Enfi eld custom-ers, so we settled in for a 600 which eventually rose to 650.’

What came in as a sweet surprise from the Royal Enfi eld CEO was the en-gine’s performance when he revealed that it effort-lessly breaches the top speed of 160 kmph, the minimum requirement of a cafe racer. Feeling ex-cited? There is more in store. This 650 cc engine gets a 270 degree fi ring

angle, one of the segment fi rsts giving it a powerful and throaty ex-haust note. But wait, it won’t be a

thumping sound like the existing UCE engine which is powering the current line-up. That’s the rea-son, Royal Enfi eld CEO tagged it with the word ‘rumble’.

Finally, coming to the engine’s specifi cations, it’s a 648 cc paral-lel twin producing 47 bhp of peak power at 7,100 rpm and 52 Nm of maximum torque at 4,000 rpm. It is fuel injected, has SOHC (single overhead cam) and has a bore and stroke of 78 mm and 67.8 mm respectively. The engine will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox with a slip-assist clutch to minimise lever effort. It contin-ues with air-cooling but with an additional oil cooler.

The engine produces more power and torque than the cur-rent reigning champ in the seg-ment KTM Duke / RC 390. But it must be seen if it can actually perform better than KTM. The re-cent race video which went viral on YouTube where the new Royal Enfi eld bike was chased by Bajaj Dominar depicts that the 650 cc engine has the required grunt. If the brand gets the prices right, they already have a winner.

When launch?As per the offi cial word, the

fl agship Royal Enfi elds will be launched in India some-where around March next year. Also, the greatest as-pect to note is that the bikes sold here will have the same specifi cations as the ones sold elsewhere. But, if must be seen how Royal Enfi eld can live up to the quality as-pects as the brand was pre-viously known for launching the Himalayan with mediocre quality and then had to dis-continue the bike for a while

to sort out issues.

maker made a surprising entry into the truck and sports car segment, with its recent launch of Tesla Semi, a truck and Roadster, a sports car.

With many countries moving to-wards green energy, Tesla is pin-ning its hopes on their new releases. The fi rm also expects these electric-powered trucks will replace diesel-fueled ones. Many other companies and manufacturers are also making big investments in this sector.

SEMI-TRUCKTesla founder Elon Musk said

that the new truck can travel upto 800 kilometers on a single electric charge while pulling a full load of 36,000 kilograms.

The exact price of the truck has not been revealed. Musk said that the new launch will be priced less than diesel trucks be-cause of its fuel savings feature and lower maintenance costs. The pro-duction is set to begin in 2019 and the company says interested buyers can pay $5,000 to reserve one.

WHAT IT HOLDS?The new electric truck will be

equipped with the driver-assist sys-tem built similar to Tesla’s other ve-hicles. It will also hold autopilot that are already there in their cars. This can keep vehicles at a set speed and is capable of slowing down au-tomatically. It can also keep vehi-

cles within traffi c lanes.CHARGE ITMusk said that the company plans

to build a worldwide system of solar-powered mega chargers, to provide electrical charges for these trucks. Musk said that a 30 minutes charge on the system could power trucks for another 640 kilometers.

HOW ABOUT A ROADSTER?In an another surprising move the

fi rm also introduced a record-setting sports car, Roadster. The car drove out of the back of the Tesla Semi.

Tesla said its updated Roadster will break several world records and will be the fi rst vehicle in regular produc-tion to reach 100 kilometers an hour in just 1.9 seconds.

Musk added that the car will have a travel range of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, which he said would be a new record for an elec-tric vehicle. Tesla plans to begin selling the new Roadster in 2020. Its starting price for the least model, is $200,000. This will be a four seater model.
