City Approves Bayfront DesignSt. Augustine’s City Commission has approved a

more pedestrian-friendly redesign of the four-laneroadway along the bayfront, with no guarantee it willever happen.

The design, dependent on federalfunding, retains two lanes in eachdirection, but adds a separate horsecarriage lane and shrinks to one lanenorthbound from the Castillo toOrange Street, as well as sidewalkand crossing signal modifications.

Planning and Building DirectorMark Knight said cost estimates andwill be prepared over the nextmonth, then a grant application for aportion of the work will go to thefederal Paul S. Sarbanes Transit inParks program. Early estimates forrevamping the bayfront ran as high as $9 million.

Galimore Pool to be City’s Responsibility“We’re getting out of the pool business,” County

Commission Chairman Ken Bryan told city commis-sioners recently, saying the county will modify aninterlocal agreement in September to turn the Galimorepool over to the city.

“We are subsidizing (interlocal) agreements,” Bryansaid, “and we can no longer do it.”

The county has offered to repair the pool and turn itover to the city. Bids for repairs will be opened in mid-March. City Manager John Regan recommended thecity take a cash settlement rather than repaired pool,“so our options are open.”

Support Unit For Historic PropertiesSecret shoppers assessing the St. Augustine experi-

ence, space for exhibiting some 2 ½ million artifacts, amillion dollar renovation of the Government Housemuseum area, and development of a community-basedinterpretive experience.

These are elements in the works or contemplated asthe University of Florida’s Direct SupportOrganization (DSO) gets to work supporting the uni-versity’s management of 34 state-owned historic prop-erties here. The university took over management afterten years of city management without state fundingsupport.

Priorities, in addition to annual $650,000 PO&M(Property Operation and Maintenance) funding fromthe state, will be lobbying for $1 million to renovatethe museum area in Government House, $1 million todevelop a community-based interpretive experience, and recurring funding for all historic buildings.

Scrimping and Saving “Honey, we’ve finally saved enough money to buy

what we started saving for in 1979,” a husband told hiswife.

“You mean a brand-new Cadillac?” she asked. “No,” said the husband, “a 1979 Cadillac.”

Census Taker came by. She told the Census Taker thather daddy was a doctor and wasn’t home, because hewas performing an appendectomy.

“My,” said the census taker, “that sure is a big wordfor such a little girl. Do you know what it means?”
