For more detailed description of these signals, and others, which may be shown by vessels, reference should be made to the Merchant shipping (Prevention of collisions at sea) Regulations 1972. These diagrams and descriptions are not intended to replace the regulations but to help explain them. “Underway” means not at anchor or made fast to the shore or aground. “Making way” means actually moving through the water.

    MPA (Port Regulations)

    Reg 32: Crossing main fairway

    (1) The owner, agent, master or person-in-charge of a vessel crossing a main fairway shall ensure that the vessel keeps clear of other vessels proceeding along the fairway.

    (3) This regulation shall not apply to a vessel engaged in towing if the vessel is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre.
