SIZZLING SCIENCE SNIPPET

This term, Room 2 students are continuing to learn about how people, animals, toys and different objects move. We ventured out into the Nature Playground and experienced different ways people can move. We jumped, climbed, dug in the sand, balanced on one leg, and used our muscles to lift objects. After visiting the Nature Playground, we made cardboard skeletons to help us identify and describe some ways in which humans move and the body parts involved in human movement. Our skeletons can dance, jump, skip, run, and even floss!

A big thank you to all the adults who attended and helped the kids make kites. Lots of fun and memories were made! Our CHAMPS group is a sub-committee of the P&C and a chance for Dad’s (or any male figure) to get involved, with their children and other Dad’s. Should you wish to be involved you can leave your contact details at the Front Office or message the P&C Facebook page. We hope to have more community events like this in the future!

NAIDOC– “Voice, Treaty, Truth. Let’s work together for a shard future.”

This year’s NAIDOC theme was, “Voice, Treaty, Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future”. As this falls during the school holidays, teachers and students participated in a range of activities and discussions in the last week of Term 2. Some activities included learning about the Noongar seasons, comparing remote communities to the city, learning some Noongar language, creating a classroom, ‘Acknowledgement of Country’, learning about the Aboriginal flag, investigating a range of Aboriginal artefacts in relation to their use in the past and in the present and reading some dreamtime stories. Students thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Indigenous culture through these learning experiences!

2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Language (IYIL). There are around 100 distinctly different Aboriginal languages, many with a range of dialects, spoken around Western Australia. In Australia at large, of the estimated original 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, only around 120 are still spoken. Of these approximately 90 per cent are endangered. The Wunanbal language group in the Kimberley, for example, has less than 10 known speakers. Language revival projects, such as the Noongar Place Names Project, are being undertaken around Australia to share and revitalise traditional languages. For further information on ‘IYIL2019’ visit www.arts.gov.au/iy2019. WA Languages Week is held from August 5 – 9 and is designed to raise awareness of the benefits of language learning, highlight the linguistic diversity in our community and celebrate the work of students and teachers in our schools. Around 18% of Western Australians speak a language other than English at home, the most common being Mandarin, Italian, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Tagalog, Arabic, Afrikaans, Punjabi, Indonesian and Hindi. Learning a language helps us to make connections with people of various backgrounds through the sharing of culture, knowledge and stories, improving our health and wellbeing and helping us to understand different perspectives. Being bi- or plurilingual makes us smarter. Second language learning not only improves literacy in our first language but cognitive skills overall, even having protective benefits against diseases such as dementia. Learning a new language is not only fun but essential in today’s world. The Western Australian Curriculum states that, ‘Despite its status as a world language, a capability in English only is no longer sufficient. A bilingual or plurilingual capability is the norm in most parts of the world.’ Knowing another language enhances employment opportunities in Australia and abroad. Some ideas to celebrate languages week with your family:

Share a memory of a trip to another country where you picked up words in the language, maybe a funny anecdote about a misunderstanding or a word that you found funny.

Adopt a word from another language and use it all the time among members of your family as a code.

Download a language-learning app.

Start using text talk in another language when communicating with members of the family.

Watch a film in another language. Enjoy Languages Week minasan! Pitcher Sensei
