What does adhocism mean?!In 1973 architects and theorists Charles Jencks and Nathan Silver wrote !Adhocism: The Case for Improvisation. Jencks coined the term in 1968.!
"It can be applied to many human endeavours, denoting a principle of action having speed or economy and purpose or utility. !
Basically it involves using an available system or dealing with an existing situation in a new way to solve a problem quickly and effectively. It is a method of creation relying particularly on resources which are already at hand.” !

What does adhocism mean?!
“It cuts through the delays caused by specialisation, bureaucracy and !hierarchical organisation” Jencks / Silver!
Itʼs about immediacy – using something to hand to perform a function. !
Itʼs different to random haphazard action.!
It is purposeful.!
Itʼs not anti-design.!
Itʼs about seeing things around us in a different way! to find new roles for objects and materials in our surroundings.!
"Recycling is over. !It is time for reusing, repurposing, upcycling” Lloyd Alter!

Bricolage!
“The term ʻbricolageʼ originated in French and is a modern equivalent to the English phrase of ʻmaking-doʼ. !
In a general sense, a bricoleur (someone who employs the bricolage method) is described as a resourceful and creative ʻtinkererʼ, and one who out of necessity uses available materials to create new objects from existing ones. This activity of re-appropriating and combining elements into new and original outcomes closely reflects the activities of a designer. “ Joyce Yee!
Bricolage!
“The concept of ʻbricolageʼ in academic studies has its roots in social research. !Claude Lévi-Strauss, a French anthropologist and ethnologist, defines the term in an anthropological sense as a spontaneous creative act that uses whatever is available to reach a desired outcome. !
In his book, The Savage Mind, he compares the Engineer (the scientific mind) with the Bricoleur (the savage mind), as a way of depicting two modes of acquiring knowledge (concrete and abstract).“ Joyce Yee!
