Summary This research explored the heterogeneity among

hedonic tone (pleasantness, preference and beauty), interestingness and amusement through two indices of understanding: the rating and the degree of realism.

Twenty-one university students of art rated 30 pictures included in 3 realism and 3 abstract paintings and these altered versions that made mosaic in 4 levels on five aesthetic evaluative, understanding, three color affective scales. Hedonic tone was strongly defined by the understanding rating and the degree of realism. On the other hand, interestingness showed the relation to the understanding rating to some degree as a general tendency, but had no relation to the degree of realism. Amusement was not related to both indices of understanding. There results indicate the heterogeneity of hedonic tone and other aesthetic evaluations through the point of the understanding of paintings.
