    2 Fast 2 Furious: 1999 Skyline

GT-R R34Two-wheel drive, not too fast

By John HuffmanPhotography by Kevin Wing

No car has quite the same reputation as Nissan's Skyline GT-R. It's not officially sold in theUnited States, barely qualifies as compact, and is built with its steering wheel on the wrongside, but the all-wheel-drive, sequentially twin-turbocharged Skyline GT-R has managed tobecome a legend in America. That the producers of "2 Fast 2 Furious" ("2F2F") recognized thatis at least somewhat encouraging--isn't it?

The Skylines used during filming were all R34s, a model introduced way back in 1998. Likeother Skylines, the R34 is powered by a RB26DETT 2.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve straight sixsitting longitudinally in the engine bay that's force fed by twin turbos and rated at a laughinglylow 280 hp. The R34's engine feeds a six-speed Getrag gearbox that in turn sends power tothe ATTESA all-wheel-drive system, which electronically varies the torque split.

Super HICAS four-wheel steering is also aboard and includes an electronic feedback controlsystem to ensure precise wheel positioning under extreme circumstances. But the big changefor the R34 from previous Skylines was a stiffened body shell and fresh aerodynamic design. This car has carbon-fiber under-car diffusers and a new rear wing.

In fact, the Skyline R34 is such an effective piece of technology, it was too good for moviework. All-wheel-drive supercars are quick and amazing to drive, but they're absolutelynonchalant about their work. It takes a rear-quarter hit by an out-of-control country squire toget an R34's tail to swing out dramatically, and burnouts are tough in a car with more traction

than a Caterpillar D9. So the 2F2F transportation department excised the front driveshaft anddisabled the Skyline's four-wheel steering so it could misbehave like a regular car.

For its appearance on camera, the Skyline was encrusted within a C-West body kit, drenchedin House of Kolor's platinum pearl paint and treated to a set of 19-inch HRE 446 polishedwheels inside Toyo Proxes T1-S tires. Inside, the front passenger seat was ditched in favor ofnot one, not two, but three nitrous bottles--none of which are actually plumbed into theengine. Also thrown in is a Clarion head unit with LCD TV screen, a big JBL amp and Infinityspeakers that actually seem to work. Of course, it also carries a bunch of blue neon and spitsblue flame from its exhaust system.

As one of the two cars driven by too-pretty-for-a-guy hero Officer Brian O'Conner (Paul

Walker), the Skyline, according to transportation coordinator Ted Moser, has 505 hp on tapand a hoarking 444 lb-ft of torque. In that "2F2F" alternate universe, that means this carrockets to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, consumes the quarter-mile in 12.1 seconds and has atop speed of 180 mph. Back on the actual planet Earth, the performance is still strong, but notquite as strong as fresher, intact R34s we've driven.

With Josh Jacquot doing his suave Paul Walker imitation, the Skyline, which is bone stockunder the hood, groped its way through the quarter in 14.1 seconds at 101 mph--the thirdquickest car of the six included in this movie car test. With 22,254 km (13,797 miles) on itsodometer, this car wasn't old, but it definitely had been beaten up pretty determinedly. Poweroutput seemed down from other R34s, but a direct comparison is tough since the other R34shad the advantage of all-wheel-drive launches and didn't need a feathery throttle down thetrack. This car literally smoked its rear tires on every 1-2 upshift, which was cool to watch but

certainly added time to each run. Its performance is also sabotaged by its big diameter wheelsand the added heft of all the add-ons. The last stock R34 we drove hit 60 mph in just 5.07seconds and crushed the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds at 103.7 mph.

The lack of AWD and 4WS knocked the movie Skyline's performance to 0.91g on the skidpad, although we expected worse. The missing front differentials made the car much easier to drift, which is of course, the point, and we have to admit the car looked great doing it.

As for the brakes, they remain stock all around, and the ABS is intact. From 60 mph, this carstopped in 127 ft. Again, not a terrible performance, but not exactly what we've come toexpect from a Skyline GT-R.

Overall, the Skyline turned out to be one of the better running and better sorted of the sixcars. The driver's seat is a Sparco Milano and the additional gauges are HKS products."It's not

longer its target. Sources intimately familiar with Nissan's latest testsessions inform us that the group is now gunning to beat the PorscheCarrera GT--a remarkably lofty goal considering that that Walter R hrl reportedly piloted a Carrera GT around the 'Ring in 7 minutes 28 seconds.Another Carrera GT, driven by Horst von Saurma, managed a lap time of

    7:32.

Our sources tell us that, thus far, the Nissan has fallen short of the CarreraGT's record-time, but not by much. Our mole tells us that some wet sectionsof the track slowed them down, and that with optimum track conditions, some heroic driving could still reel in the Porsche Supercar. Nissan repswould not divulge any specific lap times, but they hinted that somethingunder 7:35 may have been achieved. Regardless, it's clear that Nissan's goalof overtaking the 911 Turbo has been achieved in a big way. Stopwatchdrama aside, Nissan also gave us some new eye-candy by removing most ofthe camouflage that has been a staple of GT-R sightings for more than a

year now. Although not in showroom shape, the latest GT-R test cars give usour clearest look yet at the prototype's front bumper and headlights, andthe GT-R badge is now prominently displayed in the grille-opening, and onthe trunk lid. We also managed a pretty revealing interior shot as one GT-Rprepared to launch. The rear vinyl camouflage has also been removed, andnow only flat-black paint remains to obscure the GT-R's true styling. This isas close as we're likely to get to an undisguised car until the car's TokyoShow debut.

In their most recent 'Ring runs, Nissan rented the track early Mondaymorning, and had three GT-R prototypes--spaced one-minute apart--all

taking their best shots. One of the GT-Rs was reportedly driven by Horst vonSaurma--the same 'Ring specialist that drove the Carrera GT to a 7:32 laptime. Another driver was said to be a Japanese driver named Shimizu--possibly well-known racer Kazuo Shimizu. The third GT-R pilot went un-named.

Nissan will likely continue their assault on the N rburgring--and on the Porsche legacy--for the rest of this week. If the GT-R manages to do theseemingly impossible and unseat the Carrera GT, we'll let you know.

    Nissan Unveils the GT-R PROTO

    October 19 2005 |

At the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001, Nissan unveiled the GT-R Concept, confirming that the GT-R legend would be continued into the 21st century.

Then, at the 37th Tokyo Motor Show in 2003, Nissan announced the next-generation GT-R would be rolled out in 2007. Now with the launch of theproduction model just two years away, the development of the new GT-Rhas moved ahead again with the reveal of the GT-R PROTO.

Ultimate driving pleasureIn essence, driving pleasure means that a car responds faithfully to thedriver's wishes and performs precisely as expected. Successive generationsof the GT-R have consistently pursued this vision of ultimate drivingpleasure.

Whether on the road or the racetrack, the GT-R has always representedultimate performance combined with handling qualities that stay faithful tothe driver s wishes, in all conditions. As a result, the GT-R has built a reputation that extends far beyond just its loyal owner base.

Exterior design: pure performanceThe design of the GT-R PROTO expresses pure GT-R heritage, coming fromthe first model PGC10 (1969) through R34 (1999), in a new and expressiveform.

From its original roots as a pure-bred Japanese performance car, the new

GT-R will now be a car sold globally, recognizing its ability to compete withthe very best in the world. For the first time in its history, the new GT-Rwill be designed as a specific body style, and not derived from a sedan.

The design language of the GT-R PROTO is expressed by a distinctive body-style that communicates pure performance and functionality. The form ofthe GT-R PROTO instantly expresses its purpose and potential, but in a waythat is unique to this iconic car.

At the front end, the single center air intake is designed to optimize airflowand to strongly link the identity of the GT-R from R34 to GT-R Concept(2001). Front fenders are uniquely designed through intensive analysis ofthe airflow around the tires, and the air vent behind the front fender also

optimizes aerodynamics. The sides of the body are sculptured towards therear fender, expressing the power and dynamic tension of the car.

The overall shape of the body combines solid and smooth surfaces toachieve the look of a well-trained athlete. The unique c-pillar crease isdesigned for optimum aerodynamics, reflecting the racing DNA of the GT-R.

The rear of the GT-R PROTO is strong and well defined. The signature fourring-shaped tail lamps provide an immediate visual link to previous GT-Rmodels. Four large-bore exhaust pipes complete the purposeful look, whichcould only be that of a pure GT-R.

The GT-R PROTO provides for the first time a clear indication of the finaldesign direction for the production model to be launched in 2007, the firstall-new GT-R in eight years

    RUMOURS

edmunds.com has recently made an article titled: 2008 Nissan GTR Proto, the same name we have suggested and the same date. The GTR will not

arrive as a production model in 2007, let it be known. The article goes asfollows:"The 2008 Nissan Skyline may be a couple years away, but we've got thelatest spy pictures of a new prototype caught testing on the Nurburgring.Expected to come to the U.S. wearing the Nissan GTR Proto badge, thissuper coupe from Nissan is the car that Japanese rivals like the Subaru WRXand Mitsubishi Evolution aspire to. We've seen this prototype before, butcloser examination reveals some variations that have been added since itslast sighting. The rear fascia wears an extended bumper section that hintsat the GT-R's longer overall length compared to the current Japanesemarket Nissan Skyline, otherwise known as the Infiniti G35 in the U.S. The

view from behind also reveals pronounced front-quarter panels that extendbeyond the G35's stock bodywork suggesting a considerably wider track upfront. Same goes for the rear quarters, as the view from the front showssome wide wheel wells destined to house some serious rubber. from what will probably be a twin-turbo version of Nissan's VQ V6. Internetchatter has also brought up the possibility of a seven-speed sequentialgearbox, but even if that doesn't come to fruition a standard six-speedmanual should be part of the package. Ghosn has also gone on record withthe promise of a production version for the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, but a

recent report suggests that yet another concept version may be shown atthis year's Tokyo show. Rest assured that regardless of when the Nissan'sreplacement for the Skyline hits the streets it will be one of the fastestsupercars Japan has ever produced."

    Name News

    : |

It looks like the next GTR will be called Infiniti?? Nissan GT-R Proto?? Newscame around April 25, 2005 when Carlos Ghosn announced Infiniti would be

coming to Japan. Recently on 03/31/2004, Nissan Japan registered the"Nissan GT-R Proto" trademark in Japan, which signals that Japan and everyother nation will get the GTR, but under the Infiniti name. Since it will bearound $60-70k, it needs to be justified under a brand where they sell $50kcars(Q45). The car will be designed by Nissan Design Europe. News also goesthat Nissan will have two versions of the car possibly a sport and luxurymodel, think of R34 GTR V-spec II Nur(race) and M-spec(luxury). Also, onelast mention, the Nissan GT-R Proto will no more be linked with Skyline, never again, the 'Skyline GTR' blend is history!

    Release Date

    : |

New information pertaining to the date of release has been revealed. Itseems that the earliest time we will get to see a production model is 2008,so forget about 2007 and focus on the year 2008. The Tokyo Motor Showwhere the new GTR PROTO will be displayed will occur in 2005, duringOctober. This is a time where we will get to see what Nissan has been up to.The earliest we will see a GTR on the streets would be in December, even inJapan. This is too early so we expect it to be released in Q1 of 2008. This isfor a fact, if Carlos Ghosn said the GTR will come out at TMS in 2007, if it

takes place in October, this only gives reason that we can see it in earlyfirst quarter of 2008.

Also, we have reanalyzed information supplied by Nissan, and we arecontinuing to research the model name and chassis code's. We hope theGTR will be simply GTR, our efforts on it being something else like "V35" or"R35" are unknown on whether it will happen or not.

It is expected that the GTR come out in late Q4 2007.Nissan's most evident rumor is about the chassis code, whether they willintroduce a new one or not. They will certainly need to clear that issue up.The engine is said to be a twin turbo-detuned version of the one found in

the fairlady Z33 (350Z) and it is said to have close to 480ps~hp. In the U.S.many rumors surrounding conservative emissions have spurred, those of N/AV8's. Many japanese magazines have speculated on the car's specs.

Mainly it has revolved around the VQ, which might be the same one used inthe JGTC since 2003, which coincedently replaced the RB6DETT in someR34 GTR race cars. Many people were discontent with what Nissan releasedin 2001, the GTR PROTO, but it is said that the new GTR will not dissapoint. The test mule under the infiniti body was said to have been a cover up ofthe internal structure, the real body is still being under development. Whatis known, is that the body might reflect that of the 350's, not of the V35's.

The Next GTR will set the tone for other car makers, the car having themost advanced technology, such as electrical assited twin turbos as well as'e-4wd.'

In an effort to globalize the Nissan GTR, Nissan's CEO Carlos Ghosn haspromised us in the United States the delivery of the 11th generation 2007Nissan GTR. Recently the car was spotted at the Nurburgring track inGermany, where the test mule was well dressed in silver attire with silverrims.

We provide finalized specs from NISSAN MOTOR CO., LTD. on the test mule

which was badged as an Infiniti. Sporting a body kit and "rx7" type wing, itwas ready to prove itself on the track. It is speculated that Nissan broughtout the car to test the suspension and chassis stiffness, bodyroll, etc. Thecar was found to have Silver 6 Piston Brembo brakes up front, and 4 pistonin the rear. The rim package is expected to be 20x8.5J(f), 20x9.5J(r) inchaluminum rims on 255/40/20 front, 285/35/20 rear tire size Z ratedperformance tires.

Holiday Auto reported that the car should weigh in at 1390kg or 3058pounds. The engine for the Nissan GTR had been decided once the car hadfinished testing. A VQ32DETT generating an estimated 480ps @ 7,200rpm,58.0kg/m @ 5,200rpm. The transmission was chosen as well, a 7 speedGetrag sequential transmission, which is sure to be overpowering. The

Nissan GTR will be a 2 door coupe, with 4 bucket seats(preferably Recaro).

You can find other articles from reliable magazines covering the Nissan GTRlike Road and Track.

It is rumored that Nissan Jidoshi K.K. registered a Trademark as "Nissan GTRProto" with the description as 'supercoupe due 2007' on 2004-06-08. Wehave checked the trademark offices of Australia online and found it to betrue. The 2007 Nissan GTR will have Carbon and Aluminum Panel providingmaximum rigidity.

The 2007 Nissan GTR will be based on a new FR-L platform (Primary Frontengine/Rear wheel drive transaxle, motor-assisted front wheel drive or "e-4WD") due to good results from testing. This means that Australia mightpossibly want to introduce it as the first Infiniti. They have tried before, buthave been unsuccesful, but hopefully it will change with the 2007 NissanGTR. Sources say it might go as an Infiniti in the United States, others beg todiffer. As Nissan has yet to announce much formal information on the NissanGTR we must say that this has been taken into consideration when makingthis article, but we can assure you everything above is true. Unless Nissanhas will to later change anything, we inform you all that the above has beeninformation given to us by Nissan Motors Japan themselves.

Due to emission problems Nissan had with the RB26DETT, it has dropped itand made a new designed VQ engine with better emissions and gas mileage, also reduces oil consumption with a "semi-wet sump" system. There are nocurrent speculations as far as prices go, nor information on models. Wehave heard that it will show up at the 2006 Geneva Auto Show and later inthe 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. No expectations for this years Tokyo MotorShow.

The RB motor is dead for the Skyline GTR, and for this model. The newNissan Skyline GTR will be powered by a VQ engine, much like that of the

350z's, known in Japan as the Z33 fairlady. The chassis code has beenfinalized by Nissan as the FR-L. This for the first time will be a dinstinctchassis not copied by any other model.

Carlos Ghosn says that the car will arrive no later than 2007-globally. Wehave a video of the test mule at the Nurburgring in testing, but currently itis only available to forum supporter members. See details at the forum tofind out how you can see the video and spy photo's.
