In the last issue of the Online Com-municator the discussion was abouthow much our industry has changed inthe last 25 years. Additionally we dis-cussed how important it is that you notdeviate from the Core Structure thathas been responsible for your success.

Let’s take a look at another interest-ing question that we should probablyask: “If I had it to do over again, whatwould I do differently?”

When you stop to think about it thisis a very interest-ing question.What was yourb a c k g r o u n dwhen you madethe decision tostart your com-pany? Was itsystem sales,technical installation, equipment man-ufacturing or some other businessbackground? Regardless of how youfound yourself as an owner of an alarmcompany I am confident that there area few things you would do differentlyif given the chance. The good news isthat it is never too late for you to makesome of those fundamental changesthat will improve your business opera-tions and therefore your bottom line.

Do you feel like your technicians arespeaking latin when they talk to you?How many installations have you

worked on with your technicians?Regardless of how busy you are themore time you spend on job sites withyour technicians the greater under-standing you will achieve regarding thechallenges your technicians deal with.The impact this could have on the boththe quality and scheduling of yourtechnical training program would beamazing. The result from an operationsperspective could lead to more efficientscheduling and inventory control.This

could also lead to more efficient cashmanagement and expense predictabil-ity.

When you meet with you account-ant to review your P&L statement doyou feel like you just watched a badmovie you didn’t understand?

Regardless of how busy you are it isnever too late to take a few businessand accounting courses. The financialside of your business is equally as im-portant as the technical side. Do youhave a signed contract with all of yourcustomers? Are your contracts re-

viewed by your attorney and insurancecarrier on a periodic basis to assure thatthey are current? Does your insurancecarrier offer a liability product designedspecifically for our Industry? Are youraccounting and billing systems in goodorder? If a catastrophic event were tooccur in your life what would happento your business?

Better business practices on both thetechnical and financial sides of yourbusiness will lead to a business that iseasier to manage, more profitable andtherefore more valuable.

It seems that there isa great deal of family tradi-tion in the security industry.We are a family company,and I know there are manymore out there. I'm not sureif that's a matter of legacyand tradition, or if it's a mat-ter of us second generationand beyond not being smartenough to go get a good job!

Whatever the case, I'mthankful to have the careerthat I have inherited and I'mgetting ready to experienceanother part of it.

My late father, Jim L.Morris, was an officer in sev-eral different capacities overthe years for ESA of Mis-souri, and now I am VicePresident. As Bob Scales in-formed me after I got suck-ered in to assuming Dad'splace, there is another titlethat goes with this post -President Elect!

Uh oh...for a variety ofreasons, I will be attending

ESX once again, but this timewith an eye toward prepar-ing myself to be president ofour wonderful state associa-tion. I hope to learn somegreat information, andmeet some great people.

Dad always said one ofthe best advantages to thesetrips is the brain trust thatyou get to benefit from.Whether it's referrals thatcome to you from othermarkets, or somebody that'salready has a solution to aproblem that you are work-ing on, it is invaluable tomeet these industry lead-ers and learn from them.

LOBBYIST REPORT: • John Butler reported onHB2063 and SB773• This session of the Mis-souri legislature is now 2/3over and will end mid-May.A House Bill 2063 and aSenate Bill 773 have comeout of committee and are in

the hopper to be votedupon. • The senate bill has the lan-guage we crafted two orthree years ago to keep usout of the bill which createsan electrical committee forlicensing. • The House Bill has incor-rect language and our lob-byist John Bardgett willhelp correct the carve outlanguage when the bill goeson the floor. • We have had five or sixmeetings with the lobbyiston the language. It is possi-ble that the Bills will notmake it to a vote this ses-sion or they could actuallymove very rapidly late inthe session after a budget is agreed upon.• Motion to approve byMarvin Holmes, 2nd by BobScales. ANNOUNCEMENTS:

STATE ESA: • July 6th is the next tele-conference meeting. • Our October Tan-Tar-Ameeting/conference willhave the Executive DirectorMr. Merlin Guilbeau andPresident-Elect of ESA Ms.Angela White.

NEW BUSINESS: • John Butler reported thatRep. Andrew McDaniel/Martha Eudaley are work-ing on HB1652 and HB1655to allow families of resi-dents to put in cameras inthe room of a long termcare resident. Families willhave to pay for these serv-ices and the internet.• Bob Scales will write a let-ter of support for these billsfrom ESA of MO.• ESA governance commit-tee: Bryan Morris will at-tend next ESA meeting andtheir goal is to change onthe governance meeting to see if they can reduce thenumber of representatives.• Slate of officers- Julymeeting: We will announcea slate of officers in July tobe voted on at our Octobermeeting. Those officers willstart January 2017.

APPRENTICESHIP REPORT:• Kurt Canova reported thathe apprenticeship programis starting its 6th year and isapproved by US Depart-ment of Labor. • We have 12 active partici-pants. TREASURERS REPORT: • Kevin was not present. • Need to email out thetreasurer’s report. • We are also switchingbanks from Country ClubBank to Bank of America,due to fees and ease of use.

ESA REPORT: • There are two bills pend-ing regarding the electrical

licensing. • The Senate bill has notmade it to debate nor is onthe schedule. It does havethe correct carve out lan-guage. The House bill does-n’t have the correctlanguage but if it comes upfor debate John Bardgetwill get the language cor-rected. • The two bills are spon-sored by Andrew McDaniel. • The bills are basically directed at long term carefacilities allowing familiesto put security devices inthe resident’s rooms tomonitor their care. • Martha Eaudaily con-tacted Bob as her husbandwas abused in long termcare. They had a discussionand decided to write a let-

ter of support to AndrewMcDaniel. • We have moved forwardwith using Constant Con-tact for KCBFAA and ESAwhich makes it easier tocontact membership. • There were 13 people onthe first teleconferencemeeting. • In ESA’s July meeting newofficers will be elected forthe new term. • There will also be an an-nouncement regarding theOctober conference and theguest speaker which is heldat Tan-Tar-A.

MUNICIPALTY REPORTS:LEAWOOD REPORT:• Jim Cogswell – No reportas Jim wasn’t present.

NEW BUSINESS: • The golf tournament flyeris complete. It will be sentout via constant contact depending on when we getit up and running. • For the golf tournamentwe need to look at Hill-crest’s menu and see if theycan improve on the previ-

ous years or if we need todo food from another ven-dor. • Need to see how muchthey reduce the golf ticketwithout the banquet. • If we do food from another vendor need to findsomething that is equiva-lent to Hillcrest’s price sowe don’t lose money. 3 PigsBBQ was put out as an op-tion.

OTHER REPORTS OR BUSINESS: • Level 1 course is sched-uled for August 17th – 19thfrom 8 am-8 pm.• We should contact ESA to schedule a FAIM class. • They will schedule, promote and coordinate a class. • Need a minimum of 8 people.• Working on linking thecalendar for these classes to the KCBFAA website.

Glen Mowrey, National LawEnforcement Liaison for theSecurity Industry Alarm Coali-tion (SIAC), was recognizedwith the William N. MoodyAward for his leadership inbuilding partnerships betweenpublic safety agencies and thealarm industry. Started in 2004by the SIAC, the Moody awardis given annually to an individ-ual who demonstrates a pas-sion for advancing positivealarm management and bestindustry practices.

“For more than 12 years,Glen has worked tirelessly andeffectively to help achieve ourmission and has a strong work-ing relationship with leaders inthe public safety field,” saidStan Martin, Executive Direc-tor of SIAC. “Glen is a LifeMember of the International

Association of the Chiefs of Po-lice, a member of the NationalSheriffs’ Association, an ASISInternational Law Enforce-ment Liaison Council Memberand a member of 15 State Asso-ciations of Chiefs of Police.”

Prior to joining SIAC,Mowrey spent 36 years in lawenforcement with the Miami-Dade (FL) Police Departmentand the Charlotte-Mecklen-burg (NC) Police Department,retiring as Deputy Chief of Po-lice in Charlotte.

“One of Glen’s most innova-tive strategies was the creationof the Alarm ManagementCommittee,” said Martin. “Thecommittees comprise three po-lice chiefs and three hand-picked industry members andare coordinated by SIAC, work-ing under the auspices of the

State’s Police Chiefs Associa-tions. The committees are nowin 15 states, with othersplanned.”

“Through the committees’work, Glen has been instru-mental in the developmentand adoption of each state’sModel Alarm Ordinances; thedevelopment of an EnhancedCall Verification (ECV) resolu-tion; and enacting ECV as statelaw in several of the states.He’s working with over 100agencies in developing AlarmOrdinances and Alarm Man-agement Programs, somereaching reductions of near 80percent,” added Martin.

Mowrey is the recipient ofnumerous other professional,community and civic honorsand has been honored with theestablishing of the GlenMowrey Charlotte-Mecklen-burg Police Activities League’sAnnual Scholarship Awards aswell as the N.C. D.A.R.E. Offi-cers Association’s GlenMowrey Law Enforcement Of-

ficial of the Year Award.Another Mowrey innova-

tion is the SIAC Director’sAward of Distinction which hasbeen presented to dozens ofagencies nationwide. He alsoserves as Chair of the Alarm In-dustry’s Research and Educa-tion Foundation (AIREF)Research Committee.
