Placement

Your Math-U-See representative will provide placement tools to assist you in determining the best entry level for the student(s) in the curriculum. Upon receipt of the curriculum materials, access to online placement and progress monitoring exams will be provided. Math-U-See is a complete, comprehensive K-12 math curriculum that uses manipulatives to illustrate and teach math concepts. We strive toward “Building Understanding” by using a multi-sensory, mastery-based approach suitable for all levels and learning styles. While each book concentrates on a specific theme, other math topics are introduced where appropriate. Subsequent books continuously review and integrate topics and concepts presented in previous levels.

Where to StartBecause Math-U-See is mastery-based, students may start at any level. We use the Greek alphabet to show the sequence of concepts taught rather than the grade level.

Each level builds on previously learned skills to prepare a solid foundation so the student is then ready to apply these concepts to Algebra and other upper level courses.

Inordertotrainstudentstobeconfidentproblemsolvers, here are the four steps that we suggest you use to get the most from the Math-U-See curriculum.

Step 1. Instructor Prepares for the Lesson

WatchthevideolessonandreviewtheInstructionManualtolearnthe new concept and see how to demonstrate this concept with the manipulatives when applicable.

Step 2. Instructor Presents Lesson

Teach the concepts to the students, modeling the Build, Write, Say, andTeachItBackprocessandusingMath-U-Seevocabulary.Thenwork through problems interactively with students until they fully understand the new concept and can demonstrate it confidently. Thevideolessoncansupplementbutnotreplacedirectinstruction

by the teacher.

Build: Use the manipulatives to solve the problem.

Write: Show the problem step-by-step on paper as it is built.

Say: Explain the steps used to figure out the answer.

Teach It Back: Thestudentteachestheproblem/concept back, demonstrating understanding.

Step 3. Student Practices for Mastery

Assign a lesson practice page to students. Students should Build, Write, Say each problem. Assess the student’s work and understanding.Ifneeded,continueusingmanipulativesand/orvisual representations to reteach the lesson, and have the student complete additional workbook pages with a focus on concepts not yet mastered. Math-U-See’s online worksheet generator, online drill tools, and suggested learning activities can supplement the workbook.

Step 4. Student Progresses after Mastery

A student demonstrates mastery by building a problem with the manipulatives, writing the equation, saying the problem aloud using the correct vocabulary, and teaching it back to someone else. Once a student demonstrates mastery, assign a systematic review page. Continue to assess the student’s understanding, and as needed reteach and assign additional problems that address the concepts that need to be reinforced. When the teacher is certain that mastery is achieved and that the student will be successful, the lesson test is administered.

The goals detailed in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice reflect those that have been a part of Math-U-See for over 20 years, stressing conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. The updated revision of our first seven levels, Primer through Zeta, ensures that all of the concepts and procedures outlined in the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Content forgradesK-6areincludedatthoselevels.We have followed, where possible, the grade level sequence within the Content Standards; however, because our materials are structured for skill mastery and not by grade level, required concepts may be presented in a different order than grade-based curricula.

Because Math-U-See is used in a wide variety of small-group settings, the Common Core standards are addressed in different ways to enhanceflexibility.Ifaninstructorwantstofocus solely on advancing the students to the nextlevel,theInstructionManualandvideosprovide the explicit instruction needed for each lesson. For those that require a more comprehensive approach, the Application and Enrichment pages, found in the Student Workbook, provide the additional instruction needed to make sure all the Common Core standards have been addressed.
