Track notesby Lorenzo Colombo (JD Motorsport)
Monza is one of the fastest circuits in the world, where the slipstream plays an important role. But you can’t overlook the pitfalls at the chicanes! Oversteer is to be avoided, as is excessive understeer. I tend to like a car that is a bit lively at corner entry in order to get the changes of pace right.
T1 The most important thing about this chicane is to be spot on with the braking, while staying on line to go strong through the first apex and control the car in the left-hand T2. It is easy to make a mistake, so it is better to run at around 70kph to maintain the rhythm and optimise the exit towards T3, which is taken flat out in seventh gear.
T3 The second chicane is both similar and different to the first. Although it is faster, you have to be perfectly synchronised to go over the curbs at corner entry and use as much of the track as you can. At the exit, you have to be careful when getting back on the gas and pay attention to the big curb that can destabilize the car. My advice is to use it but not too much!
T4You have to take your time to perfectly negotiate the first Lesmo. It is a massive challenge that you progressively master as you go faster and faster on each lap.
T5With its narrow exit, the second Lesmo is slower than the first. But it is very important to get it right because it leads to a long straight heading to the Variante Ascari.
T7-8The Variante Ascari is the most complex portion of the circuit with its three corners: left, right, left. The first corner is the most important one. You have to carry your speed in order to get through the next two as fast as possible. This can make all the difference to avoid being off line and making a costly mistake. If you manage to keep an advantage of 2 kph, it can pay off at the Parabolica.
T9The back straight leads to the Parabolica, which is taken in fifth gear. You can take different lines through this very fast and very wide corner to gain an advantage similar to that of the Variante Ascari on the start/finish straight.

DID YOU KNOW? After the first two races of the season Max Fewtrell leads in the general classification with 43 points. Since the introduction of the new points scale in 2011, Carlos Sainz (43), Daniil Kvyat (50), Matthieu Vaxivière (50), Louis Delétraz (50) and Lando Norris (43) did as well or better. As of today, only Lando Norris has gone on to convert his strong start to the season into a title.
