2ND 9WKS – WK5 – D3

UNIT: Theme/Style Analysis

AGENDA

Discuss chapters 9-10

Chapters 9-10 reading check quiz

Review Socratic seminar & Friday’s theme

statements

In-class group activity: Body Biography

HW: Read chs. 11-12 (by Friday) & finish

seminar prep.

CHS. 9-10

To be a leach was literally to be a doctor; this

was an idiom of the time/region; however, what

does this symbolize in terms of Chillingworth’s

relationship to Hester?

We learn that Chillingworth was indeed

captured by Indians, which accounts for his time

lost (also mentioned in ch. 4 if you didn’t pick up

on it).

CHS. 9-10

The people of the town assign

Chillingworth to care for the young minister

Dimmesdale who clutches his chest from an

unexplainable pain. He moves in with him.

Why is Hawthorne showing us all this? Why

Dimmesdale?

CHS. 9-10

In conversation with Dimmesdale,

Chillingworth makes the following remark: “…

some men bury their secrets…[These men] fear

to take up the shame that rightfully belongs to

them.” What does this reveal about both

Dimmesdale & Chillingworth?

SOCRATIC SEMINAR REMINDERS

Let’s review the discussion format.

Have your prep. notes ready for class

beforehand. If you are finishing them as

class starts, you will be instantly reduced

from a potential 15/15 to 10/15 points for

them.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT: CHARACTER B IOGRAPHY

You will begin this today. You will be grouped, you will

outline, & you will answer the assignment criteria on a

given character (Hester, or Pearl, or Chillingworth, or

Dimmesdale.

Thursday is the seminar, but Friday we’ll add to this

assignment with a gallery walk (which I’ll explain at the

beginning of class Friday).
