DMJ link is a publication of the Daughters ofMary and Joseph. It has a twofold purpose:

to inform its members of the involvementof our Sisters in mission and ministry;

to acknowledge the generosity of ourdonors.

All material submitted for the Interchange issubject to revision and/or editing.

From the Development Office…

Dear Friend of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph,Welcome to the first edition of DMJLink!

With this first edition of DMJLink we combined two DMJ Newsletters:MEMOS and INTERCHANGE. We started publishing MEMOS in1970 as a means of sharing news and information within thecommunity. The INTERCHANGE was a publication of ourDevelopment Office. Many of you are accustomed to getting one orthe other of these newsletters.

The Internet Age made MEMOS superfluous. However, we feelthere are some areas of MEMOS which, when combined withINTERCHANGE would continue to serve our ministry and mission.

Why the title DMJLink? Throughout his life, our founder, Msgr. VanCrombrugghe, stressed the importance of a family spirit that must bealive within our Congregation. Time and again he reminded us thatwe are members of the family of Mary and Joseph. He frequentlyurged us to extend our family spirit to our students and their parents. In fact it must be extended to all men and women with whom weminister.

The new title, DMJLink, is a reminder that all of us, you and we, arelinked together as members of the family of Mary and Joseph. Weshare the same mission of Jesus that all be united with Him to bringabout the Kingdom of God on earth.

We never cease to thank God for His gift of so many faithful and gen-erous friends. Your generosity to us is truly overwhelming. Throughyour generosity you participate in our ministries and in the care of ourretired Sisters.

You and your family are remembered in the daily prayers of ourSisters. On the first Monday of every month the Josephite Fathers inSanta Maria offer Mass for all of our benefactors.

~ Alice Nugent, DMJ

Our Mission:

We are an international community of vowed religious women. We are committed to deepening our relationship withJesus Christ. This relationship manifests itself as an individual and corporate response to the needs of today’s world. Our mission is to be a compassionate, joyful presence enabling those to whom we minister to recognize their value anddignity. We are dedicated to sharing the merciful love of God with all who experience brokenness or poverty in any form.

Our Vision:

“Be there for the whole Church, be there as a pardoned sinner who has found peaceand rejoices in the merciful love of God.”

Seasonal Reflections

My lover speaks; he says to me,Arise my beloved, my beautiful one, and come!

For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time for glad songs has come,

The cooing of the dove is heard in the land. The fig tree puts forth its figs and the vines, in bloom, are fragrant.

Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come!

Song of Songs 2:10-13

I am writing this on April 22, Earth Day. Here in Palos Verdes, Spring is in full vigor, and our earth is bursting with blossoms, color and fragrance, vibrant with life, havingawakened from Winter’s hibernation. Spring regales us with sights and sounds ofnewness: birdsongs, humming bees, frisky baby animals, signs everywhere of sprout-ing, growing, nesting, birthing and greening. It is nature’s symphony of praise andgratitude to God. Perhaps it is also a plea to us, as co-creators with God, to becomepro-active in preserving our earth and its endangered species for future generations.

Springtime and Easter always coincide. The season of joyful Alleluias has come. Aswe celebrate Christ’s Resurrection, we are called to transformation and new life. Thevoice of the Lover is heard again: “Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come!”What an incredible invitation! It is a call to go deeper, to grow in relationship withJesus. This is the season for us to explore our deepest longings and desires.

Nature responds spontaneously to the Creator’s call to growth and new life. For us it isa choice. Are we willing to discern and follow Christ’s call to new life? At our first stirof assent, Jesus promises to be with us on the way even as He was with the discipleson the Road to Emmaus. I invite you to read and ponder that encounter—Luke 24:13-35.

Tasting LifeAnthony De Mello

Before the young man began his studies, he wanted assurance

from the Master.

"Can you teach me the goal of human life?"

"I cannot," replied the Master.

"Or at least its meaning?"

"I cannot."

"Can you indicate to me the nature of death and of life

beyond the grave?"

"I cannot."

The young man walked away in scorn. The disciples were dis-

mayed that their Master had been shown up in a poor light..

Said the Master soothingly, "Of what is it to comprehend

life's nature and life's meaning if you have never tasted it? I'd

rather you ate your pudding than speculated on it."
