TRANSCRIPT
Evangelii Gaudium The Joy of the Gospel
Quotes Worth Noting
compiled by Susan Vogt Mary, Mother of Evangelization
“There is a Marian ‘style’ to the Church’s work of
evangelization. Whenever we look to Mary, we come to
believe once again in the revolutionary nature of love
and tenderness. In her we see that humility and
tenderness are not virtues of the weak but of the strong
who need not treat others poorly in order to feel
important themselves...[Mary is] the one who brings a
homely warmth to our pursuit of justice...” §288
“This interplay of justice and tenderness, of
contemplation and concern for others, is what makes the
ecclesial community look to Mary as a model of
evangelization.” §288
“Give us a holy courage to seek new paths,
that the gift of unfading beauty may reach every man
and woman.
Virgin of listening and contemplation, Mother of love, Bride
of the eternal wedding feast,
Pray for the Church, whose pure icon you are,
That she may never be closed in on herself
Or lose her passion for establishing God’s kingdom.” §288

Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy “Sacred song . . . forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn
liturgy” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 112)
The Council’s teachings about music in the liturgy have been
summarized neatly as a shift from singing at
Mass to singing the Mass. In other words,
music is not an adornment to the rites of the
Church. Rather, music is integral to the
liturgy, inseparable from the liturgy,
especially when what is sung is the liturgy
itself: the dialogues, hymns, prayers, and
acclamations of the Mass. “Sacred music will be the more holy
the more closely it is joined to the liturgical rite” (Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy, 112). In other words, the most
important singing we do at Mass is not the hymn during the
procession, but the prayers that are part of the liturgy: the
Penitential Act, the Gloria, the Alleluia, the Sanctus, the
Memorial Acclamation, and Amen. This is what it means to
sing the Mass. Singing at Mass is not enough! The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration ©

From the desk of Fr. Ken The backbone of our Parochial School System and to a great
degree our Catholic Hospitals and Nursing Homes have been the
men and women religious. They devoted themselves willingly to
instill knowledge and discipline when we were in school and

they were generous with their time and talents for us may we be

Season of
Silence
We are now a week into
the Advent season. This
is a perfect time to
reQect back to see if this
season has shaped our
work and prayer since
the beginning of
Advent. For whatever
reason, Lent seems to be the time when we are focused
on changing something in our lives. In the same way, let
us use Advent, as a Catholic community, to listen for
Christ in our lives in a new way.
The true season of Advent promotes a silencing of our
hearts so that we can let the voice of Christ in.
Unfortunately, for many of us, it seems as if the start of
Advent means quite the opposite because of a
competing season that coincides with Advent. The kick
o9 day of this other season is called Black Friday. The
themes of this season include impatience, stress, anxiety
and busyness to name a few. We will call this the season
of noise. To paint a visual, Christ holds the purple advent
Qag in his corner while the antichrist holds his black Qag
in the other.
Of course we will be busy at times during this Advent
season, but that does not mean that our hearts need to
be noisy. We can still do many wonderful things during
this season and still Snd peace in all. It all starts with a
practice of prayer called silence. The great thing about
this prayer is that it is as simple as it sounds. The external
silence leads to an internal silence. Think of it as a time
out during the day. For many of us, silence is not silent.
We believe that unless we are talking to God, that it is
not a true prayer. It’s diTcult to listen when we are
talking. God so desires to speak to us in that silence.
If there is one thing that we do di9erently during this
Advent season, let us practice true silence. Find that
sacred time during the day to sit with Christ and listen,
even if it is only for a few minutes. It is in this silence that
we combat the season of noise. “God, I am here now to
listen to you. Help me to be still and silent. Help me to
hear your voice.”
Advent is a great time to: Clean out closets and toy bins, Donate gently used
items to local charities, Buy a Christmas gift for a less
fortunate child, Bring food to your parish pantry, Visit
relatives and/or parishioners in a nursing home, Bake
cookies for a homebound neighbor and/or Volunteer to
help decorate the church for Christmas.
Retirement Fund for Religious
Give thanks for religious. A parishioner writes, “We thank God today and every
day for every religious sister who taught us in school not
only our ABC’s, but also to love God.” Share your grati-
tude for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and reli-
gious order priests who made a positive di9erence in so
many lives. Please give generously to next week’s col-
lection for the Retirement Fund for Religious.

God worked through history to reconcile his lost children to
Himself while building His kingdom.

author, a much-in-demand speaker, and renowned bible
scholar. The cost is just $20 for your study materials. To join

Advent Worship 101 "What exactly does the Immaculate
Conception celebrate?"
The Solemnity of the Immaculate conception celebrates
the saving work of God in preserving the Blessed Virgin
Mary from the stain of original sin. Because of His
foreknowledge that Mary would consent to bear Christ,
God kept Mary free from original sin from the moment of
her conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne.
The Immaculate conception falls on Monday, December 8,
2014.
Unlike certain other Holy Days of Obligation, where the
requirement to attend Mass is abrogated when the date of
the feast falls on Saturday or a Monday, the Solemnity of
the Immaculate Conception is so important that the
obligation is not waived.
Do you have questions you want answered? Send your
questions to [email protected] or call the
parish oTce (321-1207). You may even drop them in the
collection basket. We look forward to hearing them.

Let’s Be Gentle…by Janel Esker
Comfort, give comfort to my people,
says your God. These very
direct words from God and the
phrase that follows, “Speak to the heart
of Jerusalem,” would be enough if they
were the only scriptural words we heard
this weekend. They are straightforward
and carry such weight.
Speaking through Isaiah to the
suffering Hebrew people, God was
promising an end to their suffering—
even though it was not evident yet—
telling them to prepare with joy for
God’s coming. They were to prepare for a
future that was “already but not yet”—it
was present through God’s promise,
but not yet in its fullness. Comfort, give
comfort to my people, says your God.
Speaking to the heart is essential in
giving comfort. My husband and I use a
mantra during the Advent season—“Let’s
be gentle with each other.” The holidays
bring scheduling conflicts, multiple
family commitments, and long to-do
lists. When we’re stressed, we can
wound each other with harsh words,
impatience, and thoughtlessness. As we
prepare for Christ’s birth—an “already,
but not yet” experience—we’d all do well
to remember comforting, gentle words in
our closest relationships. Comfort, give
comfort to my people, says your God.
Jesus inaugurated the kingdom of
God, so it’s already here, but not yet in
its fullness, which will occur with Jesus’
return. Great suffering, brokenness,
and grief remain. The best way to live
in this already-but-not-yet world is by
acting with tender comfort toward all
of God’s children. We never know how
much hurt another is experiencing when
we meet them. We can be the gentle
presence of God—the great Comforter. †
Sunday ReadingsIsaiah 40:1–5, 9–11The prophet calls the people to “prepare the way” for God’s arrival with repentance, proclamation, and justice. The Lord’s presence is marked by power, care, and mercy.
2 Peter 3:8–14The author exhorts the Church to patience, upright behavior, and eager discipleship, pointing to the timelessness of God’s presence and the mystery of the last days and Final Judgment.
Mark 1:1–8
as the messenger proclaimed by Isaiah (and also, perhaps, in Malachi 3), citing his baptismal ministry and message of repentance and penitence.

Explore what is reigning in your heart.
This Advent, I hope to declutter our
family’s life a bit, starting with our home.
Every week, we will each give seven
possessions to charity. Getting rid of the
old should prepare room for the new,
and I trust that making space in our
home for the joy of Christmas will teach
us to make space in our hearts for that
joy too.
Plain Talk: Uncommon Courtesiesby Fr. Rick Potts, CSsR
Imagine walking out your front door
without locking it. You get in your
car and find the keys in the ignition.
As you arrive at the store, the car in front
of you passes up the closest parking
space so you can have it.
You get to the register only to realize you
left your wallet at home. The clerk rings
up your items anyway—no charge. As you
leave the store, a passerby holds the door
open for you. And you notice someone put
change in your parking meter.
I often wonder why it’s so difficult
for us to be nice. We’re not even always
nice to the people we profess to love. I’m
not talking about giving away our cars,
emptying our bank accounts, or even
the corporal works of mercy. I’m talking
about the simplest acts: holding open
a door, letting someone in line in front
of us, giving someone the right-of-way
on the road, saying hello to a stranger,
pulling over for a funeral procession,
smiling at someone.
In the confessional, I hear about
sins of impatience and anger more and
more frequently. Too often, we judge
and condemn each other without even
wanting to know all the circumstances.
We assume the absolute worst. Everyone
who boards a plane is a terrorist.
Everyone leaving Sam’s Club is a
shoplifter. Every homeless person is an
addict, every urban male teen a gang
member. We’re afraid our kindness will
be repaid with violence—or at the very
least, a lawsuit.
They used to be called common
courtesies; however, they’re becoming
so uncommon that we may even call
them “random acts of kindness.” These
acts are more than part of our Christian
vocation—they can actually be life-
changing opportunities.
Each of us has the power to affect
another person’s life. To shake us out
of our own little existence, sometimes
all it takes is reaching in and offering a
no-strings-attached act of love.

The Home Church: Prepare Him Roomby Paige Byrne Shortal
There is much I love about
family Christmas traditions,
but sometimes the thought of
Christmas exhausts me! The First Sunday
of Advent debuts the wreath with its four
candles, the Advent calendar, Christmas
books, and Christmas music. On the
feast of Saint Nicholas (December 6), the
children find their stockings filled with
small presents and sweets.
On the Second Sunday of Advent, we
put up the outside lights and the door
wreath. My collection of angels finds a
home on a shelf in the living room. The
Third Sunday is the day we bring in
our tree and bring out our collection of
ornaments. We also prepare our Christmas
cards this week. On the Fourth Sunday,
we bake cookies. Finally, on Christmas
Eve, we all go to midnight Mass.
All this stuff makes me feel grinchy.
The five of us live in just under 1,400
square feet. Christmas brings an
explosion of stuff. The house becomes
cluttered. I always spend the latter part
of the Christmas season purging. Last
December 26, I organized stuff all day
and went to bed cranky and resentful.
I had not enjoyed a single moment.
Preparing for the Lord involves
decluttering not only our homes but
also our minds and hearts. Can’t hear
the Lord? Examine what you’re listening
to. Can’t see the path you believe God
has set out for you? Look deeply at the
path you’re following. Feel empty of God
or unable to pray, to rejoice, to believe?
