May 30, 2021 - The Most Holy Trinity

In the past day or two, chances are many of us have used phrases like “Here we go again!”, or “Déjà vu”, as Victoria began its fourth COVID-19 lockdown, this time termed a “circuit –breaker”. Please God that will be an accurate word.

The roads are emptying themselves of traffic, most shops and businesses are shut, and just about everything related to “community” has a “Closed” sign on the front door.

This includes - very much - our own church doors at St. Simon’s. What was unthinkable, unimaginable fifteen months ago, could all-too-easily become a regular feature of life as we live it. Having a schedule of Mass times in this bulletin, and making arrangements for children’s First Holy Communion Masses - these are just two of the many adjustments the parish and parishioners have had to make with minimal notice or preparation.

But alongside those not insignificant difficulties. We also have to recognise the thousands who no longer have either work or Jobkeeper support, and the many businesses for whom one more day’s closure (let alone a week or more) can mean devastation.

And especially we need to care about, and pray for the families faced with the awful choice of either delaying indefinitely the funeral of a loved one or “settling” for a funeral with just ten people being permitted to attend. And we should not forget the couples who have had to postpone their wedding yet again - perhaps for a third or fourth time!

Let us find some time during this coming week for a fervent prayer or an on line Mass for those being most deeply affected

- medically, socially, financially, mentally, will be a valuable act of genuine care and love.

The shattered family of Cooper Onyett, who drowned during his first ever school camp, are pleading for a lockdown exemption for his funeral.

The devastated family of Cooper Onyett are “hoping” for an

exemption so that their son’s funeral can still go ahead tomorrow, on the first day of Victoria’s seven-day circuit-breaker lockdown. The eight-year-old died at the Belfast

Aquatics pool in Port Fairy last Friday while away on his first overnight school camp.

“This wasn’t how your life was meant to go. This wasn’t how your story was meant to end. You had so much left to do. So much left to achieve. So much left to give,” family member Tennielle Owen wrote in an emotional tribute on Facebook.

Now, his family fear they may be dealt a second blow with the

potential cancellation of Cooper’s memorial, set to take place in Warrnambool tomorrow at 11am. Today, caps were placed on funerals as part of the state’s lockdown, which comes into play from midnight tonight.

Speaking to 3AW this morning, Cooper’s mother, Skye Meinen, said an already difficult time had been made worse. “I’m just hoping that we can gain some sort of exemption,” she told host Neil Mitchell.

“We’ve got a whole school that’s mourning for a friend.” Ms Meinen said their family needed the support of the community right now, and would be open to holding the funeral outdoors with masks.

“We really need support from family and friends to get through this,” she said. “We’ve all been so strong and to rip away the support that we've really opened to is just something that I just think would be detrimental.” Ms Meinen said she found the funeral restrictions particularly hard to accept because there hadn’t been any Covid-19 cases near Warrnambool.

MAY THEY REST IN PEACE

We pray for the repose of the souls of:

ST. SIMON’S COMMUNITY FETE - 20.11.21

Everyone is looking forward to the Fete, and we need all hands on deck to make the day a success. Wonderful events like the Fete don’t just happen - it takes teamwork and community spirit.

We are looking for Stall Captains for the Aussie BBQ, Toys and Cappuccino Bar (Barista experience highly desirable).

We are asking families and individuals to set aside some time on Fete Day itself (Nov. 20), especially for the clean-up and on the day before (Nov. 19) to set up the stalls and other attractions. Perhaps you could plan this in your diary/ calendar. Your valuable time and help is greatly appreciated, and it all contributes to a successful Fete for our community. Please contact the Parish Office ([email protected]) if you can help. Stay tuned for regular updates in the bulletin. …………………………………………………………………….………………………………………………………………………….…………………..………

ST. SIMON’S FETE RAFFLE PRIZES

We are looking to again offer attractive prizes for the Fete Raffle this year. We are seeking donations of prizes with a value of over $500 from our local business community. If you are not “the boss”, perhaps you could ask the person at work who could make such a contribution. In return for such a generous donation, we will promote those businesses on the tickets, in the Fete flyer, bulletin, online and on the day. If you own a business, or know a business that could help us, please contact the parish.…………………………………………………………………….………………………………………………………………………….…………………..………

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES

Odite Ekanayake, Robert Mann, Christine Tampling, Jennifer Sikorski, Stephanie Smith, Isabella Kertesi, Lorraine Hill, Eliza Catanzariti, Adam Stagg, Brian Harriss, Ebony Sawyer, Vanessa Williams.

May you enjoy your celebration. …………………………………………………………………….………………………………………………………………………….…………………..………

LATEST COVID-19 IMPLICATIONS

As of 11.59pm on Thursday 27 May, we returned to a ‘circuit-breaker’ 7-day lockdown, that is very similar to the Stage 3 we have experienced before. The following ‘circuit-breaker lockdown’ measures will apply across Victoria and will be in place until 11.59pm, Thursday 3 June, 2021 unless otherwise notified.

Face masks must be worn inside and outdoors: everywhere except your own home.

There will be 5 Reasons to leave home:

1. Shopping for necessary goods and services (one person per household, once per day, a support person can accompany if required; within 5km);

2. Caregiving or compassionate reasons;

3. Authorised work or permitted education, or work interstate (you should work from home if you can);

4. Exercise (up to two hour with one other person or members of your household; within 5km);

5. Receive a vaccination.

Private and public gatherings will not be permitted: Single person bubbles will be allowed.

PRAYER and RELIGIOUS CEREMONIES: No in-person gatherings permitted. Livestreaming and Broadcast is permitted with a total of 5 people present,

FUNERALS: (indoor and outdoor): Permitted with no more than 10 people (and those necessary to conduct the funeral).

WEDDINGS: (indoor and outdoor): Not permitted unless end of life or for deportation reasons. Involves only 5 persons ( inc. celebrant, two witnesses).

AGED CARE: No visitors are permitted into aged care except for end-of-life reasons.

St Simon’s Church and Parish Office will remain closed until end of ’circuit breaker’ lockdown. The Parish Office email: [email protected] will be monitored.

For urgent queries, please contact Fr Kevin Dillon on 0421 777 360 or our parish mobile on 0491 176 149.

May 30, 2021 - The Most Holy Trinity

FIRST READING: Deuteronomy 4:32-34. 39-40

Moses said to the people: Put this question to the ages that are past, that went before you, from the time God created man on earth: Was there ever a word so majestic, from one end of heaven to the other? Was anything ever heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of the living God speaking from the heart of the fire, as you heard it, and remain alive? Has any god ventured to take to himself one nation from the midst of another by ordeals, signs, wonders, war with mighty hand and outstretched arm, by fearsome terrors - all this that the Lord your God did for you before your eyes in Egypt? Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth beneath, he and no other. Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you for ever. RESPONSORIAL PSALM

Psalm 32(33):4-6,9,18-20,22 SECOND READING:

Romans 8:14-17 Everyone moved by the Spirit is a son of God. The spirit you received is not the spirit of slaves bringing fear into your lives again; it is the spirit of sons, and it makes us cry out, 'Abba, Father!' The Spirit himself and our spirit bear united witness that we are children of God. And if we are children we are heirs as well: heirs of God and coheirs with Christ, sharing his sufferings so as to share his glory.

GOSPEL: Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven disciples set out for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him, though some hesitated. Jesus came up and spoke to them. He said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.'
