Clemson is one of only 11 public universities

recognized for excellence in undergraduate research and creative projects. U.S.News &

World Report, 2018.

Creative Inquiry Clemson’s world-class undergraduate research program is open to all students and every degree program. Here’s how it works: for one or more semesters, an interdisciplinary team collaborates on an investigation led by a faculty mentor. Topics are limitless —and when it’s over, they often fi nd themselves presenting their fi ndings at national conferences or even traveling internationally. In 2016-17, 4,802 students participated in 404 Creative Inquiry projects.

Calhoun Honors College Clemson’s highest-achieving students thrive on scholarship, community service, leadership and social activities. Honors students are challenged to reach their full potential through specialized courses, smaller classes taught by top faculty, and a diverse range of innovative learning experiences. The University sponsors opportunities for global engagement and ground-breaking research, in addition to providing individualized funding for internships and professional development. Applications are welcomed from enrolled students who are not currently members of the Honors College.

She’s making a difference in cancer research and never misses home football games. Meet Rebecca Jones, a genetics major from Alaska.

Why Genetics?“My passion for fi ghting disease with science started in ninth grade when I completed the genetics unit in biology class. I fi nd it fascinating that something as small as one gene can have such a huge infl uence on the human body, if it’s in the wrong spot.”

Ready for a Challenge The prestige of the Calhoun Honors College played a huge role in Rebecca’s decision to come to Clemson. Experiences such as participating in EUREKA!, fi nding a home in the honors Living-Learning Community and serving as an honors ambassador have shaped her educational journey and led to amazing connections.

An (Almost) Unbelievable Honor Since freshman year, Rebecca has participated in a Creative Inquiry project led by Dr. Jeremy Tzeng. He suggested she work with one of his graduate students, Maryam, on research that examines the effects of genes and their ability to cure cancer cells. In the future, these advanced discoveries will allow for breakthroughs in cancer treatments.

When Maryam decided to include Rebecca’s name on her published paper, the Clemson junior almost didn’t believe the news. “That wasn’t a goal I expected to accomplish until my fi nal thesis at the end of graduate school,” said Rebecca. “To have done it in just three years is a feat that defi nitely makes me very proud.”

Hands-On Experience“Through my internship at the Greenwood Genetics Center, I’ve truly realized just how well Clemson has prepared me for the professional workplace. The past three years have confi rmed I want to become a genetic counselor, helping patients understand genetic test results, fi gure out if a test is right for them, and walk through the statistics and probability of the genetics realm.”

EUREKA!This fi ve-week research summer program, available to incoming honors students, gave Rebecca a jump start on campus life before classes even began.

“I have incredible

research opportunities

that might one day help

save lives, and I got to

watch our football team

win the 2016 National

Championship. Here

there’s a balance between

excelling in academics

and having fun.”

An adviser helped her fi nd the right academic fi t; now she’s inspiring a new freshmen class to chase their dreams. Meet Juliann Lloyd, a civil engineering major from South Carolina.

Choosing a MajorAfter completing the general engineering classes, Juliann decided to pursue mechanical engineering, but something didn’t click. “My adviser offered information about other departments and introduced me to a civil engineering adviser named CJ,” said Juliann. “It was so evident how much CJ cared; she listened to my passions and goals and helped me realize that civil engineering is where I really belong.”

Stronger Together As an ambassador for the civil engineering department, Juliann mentors sophomores entering the program and gives tours to prospective students and their families. “I’m a minority in this department, but I’ve never once felt excluded,” she said. “I want to welcome new faces and let them know they can belong here, too.”

RiSE “I lived in RiSE (Residents in Science and Engineering) my freshman year. Participating in a Living-Learning Community means entering your discipline with friends that feel like family. You overcome exams and homework assignments together, and even take classes in your residence building. Having

that convenient access to professors is a huge plus!”

Resident Assistant Extraordinaire Juliann is passionate about changing lives by sharing knowledge. That’s why she became an RA for an all-female, freshman residence hall. “Meeting people from different backgrounds is eye-opening; I love helping young girls fi gure out where they truly shine during such a defi ning time in their lives.”

Living-Learning Communities Our 22 nationally recognized Living-Learning Communities allow undergraduates to share residence hall space, staff, programming and resources with other students in their fi eld of interest. Through academic partnerships, service-learning opportunities and research initiatives, each community is uniquely-designed to ease the transition to college life and facilitate meaningful connections. Space is limited, so contact the housing offi ce as soon as possible to secure your spot. housing.clemson.edu/living-learning

build relationships with advisers,

professors and peers. Clemson has

so much to offer, and interacting

with others can help you fi gure out

which path to take.”

Class of 1956 Academic Success Center Receive one-on-one instruction to improve your grades and maintain an academic scholarship. Attend a workshop that will take your learning to the next level. Or just fi nd a quiet corner to get together with your study group.

Peer-Assisted Learning, academic coaching and tutoring is available free to every Clemson student. Whether you hope to graduate early or uphold a high GPA for entrance to elite graduate programs, know this: More than 50 percent of freshmen seek out the ASC during their fi rst semester. clemson.edu/asc

Peer-Assisted LearningThis program provides supplemental instruction for students in historically challenging undergraduate courses. PAL leaders attend class lectures with students to hear the instructor present material and take note of what questions are asked. They then facilitate two collaborative study sessions each week on the course content. The result? More confi dent and independent learners equipped with strategies for mastering diffi cult material.

Lights, Camera, Action! Freshman year, Max would often shoot video of life as a college student and post it to Instagram. A fellow student asked if he was interested in creating content for Clemson Athletics. He went to an interview, and an hour later was out on the football practice fi eld with a camera in hand.

Internship of a Lifetime“The staff at Clemson Athletics are professional, but they also have a sense of humor and aren’t afraid to go out on a limb. They give students the freedom to explore and create in ways that no one else has. When our team puts our minds to something, we produce material that a ton of people will see and can really make an impact in the social media world.”

Clemson-Adobe PartnershipFor Max, the University’s partnership with Adobe was crucial to pushing the boundaries in video storytelling: “Having access to the entire Adobe Creative Cloud and Digital Publishing Tools changed everything. Without Adobe I wouldn’t be traveling around the country with the football team, doing what I do.” Located on the fi fth fl oor of the Cooper Library, the Adobe Digital Studio is an open-access learning space where students gain digital production skills and are equipped with the technology to use them.

Going Viral After a heart-stopping win against Notre Dame, Max fi lmed the football team and staff’s epic locker room celebration. The video was put out on Twitter and immediately went viral, racking up more than 14.5 million views to date. “Being there in the moment, shooting, editing, getting input from our creative team, and then sharing and seeing it thrive was awesome,” said Max. “My internship set the course for my career and built a portfolio that grabs attention and allows me to network with many different brands.”

The perfect internship and a six-second video turned his passion into a career. Meet Max Huggins, a communication major from South Carolina.

“I’ve worked with some of the

biggest names in sports —

Turner, NBA, Nike, X Games,

NCAA. None of that would’ve

been possible without an

internship that opened the

door and prepared me to step

through it.”

UPICMax’s sweet gig with Clemson Athletics was facilitated by the UPIC program, which offers students paid, on-campus internships working alongside faculty and staff in their fi eld of interest.

Co-opThe Cooperative Education Program provides an opportunity for students to alternate semesters of academic study with semesters of paid, career-related, engaged-learning experiences to bridge the gap between class work and its application in professional practice.

Service LearningWe’re known for helping others — whether it’s applying for a scholarship, choosing a study abroad destination, selecting a research topic or just fi nding your classroom. Service-Learning at Clemson University is experiential education in which community service experiences complement academic course material. It allows both instructors and students to apply their acquired knowledge and skills in a public setting by performing tasks with or for a community or a specifi c public organization.

Clemson Greek life represents about 25 percent of the student population and offers a wide range of opportunities for personal growth through 20 fraternities and 13 sororities.

One conversation with a professor motivated him to co-found and lead a student organization. Meet Rayshad Dorsey, an architecture major from South Carolina.

PEERHis senior year of high school, Rayshad attended a Clemson PEER program (Programs for Educational Enrichment and Retention). PEER is designed to increase and retain minority students through mentoring, counseling, networking and tutoring. During the event, he stayed with a student mentor on campus, went to class and learned what it’s like to be an architecture major here. He felt right at home, and that experience solidifi ed his decision to come to Clemson.

A Compelling Conversation“Architecture is a way to express yourself — the creativity is limitless. I’m most inspired by buildings that push the limit but are also refl ective of the people inside. One day after class, Professor Barker encouraged me to become a better architect by making the most out of my time at Clemson. He said I should step out of my comfort zone, spend time away from the studio, talk to other groups and learn to be a leader. I started by joining the Student Affairs Advisory Board and became very informed about what was going on around campus.”

NOMASRayshad and two of his friends founded a National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMAS) chapter at Clemson. “The architecture program here has so much legacy, and we wanted to support that,” said Rayshad. “Besides developing my leadership skills, NOMAS has opened many doors for me. I attended two national conferences and had the opportunity to be a project manager for the national Barbara G. Laurie design competition.”

What’s NextThis fall Rayshad is heading to graduate school at Harvard University. “I know that Clemson has prepared me well for what lies ahead,” he said. “What I’ll remember most about this place is the people, and feeling like I could talk to my professors about anything. They’re all so welcoming and passionate about teaching.”

“At fi rst you think, ‘Who

can I talk to that’s like

me?’ But when you

start engaging with

people from different

backgrounds and

form real, authentic

relationships, you

understand that Clemson

is more than just

separate compartments.

We’re a whole.”
