THE UNIVERSITY MACE

A symbol of authority and dignity of office, the mace has been associated with civil and academic ceremonies from at least the 4th century. The Mace is designed to convey honor, optimism, hope, accomplishment, learning and scholarship, and its association with special events denotes tradition, solemnity and a commitment to excellence. At The University of Texas at El Paso, the Mace plays a prominent role in all Commencement and Convocation ceremonies. The University Mace is a timeless and inspiring symbol that combines forms selected from the distinctive Bhutanese architecture of the UTEP campus; the natural landscape of the Chihuahuan Desert; and the multicultural heritage of the U.S.-Mexico border region. The Mace captures the University’s rich history as well as its highly promising future, from its beginnings as Texas’ first mining school in 94 to today’s competitive research university serving a 2st century student demographic. As UTEP commemorates its Centennial this year, the University Mace will take its place as a cherished legacy of that major milestone, an extraordinarily beautiful reminder of UTEP’s first 00 years of commitment to providing higher education opportunities to residents of this U.S.-Mexico border region.

UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM GRADUATES, CANDIDATES, AND SCHOLARS

The University Honors Program provides opportunities to meet the needs of intellectually talented and highly motivated students. At the core of the program is a series of honors classes taught by outstanding faculty, in which learning is based on personalized and group interaction, with emphasis being placed on critical thinking and effective communication. Students who participate in the program may earn recognition in one of two forms: the Honors Certificate, which requires hours of honors credit; or the University Honors Degree, requiring 30 hours of honors credits in specified subject areas. Students may also elect to carry out individualized research, culminating in the Honors Senior Thesis. Entering freshmen must have graduated in the top percent of their high school class or have achieved a superior score on the SAT or ACT. A 3.3 cumulative grade point average is the criterion for admitting current UTEP or transfer students.

A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

39

YOU ARE A PART OF THE UTEP LEGACY

In 204, The University of Texas at El Paso celebrates its 00th birthday. As a 204 UTEP alum-to-be, you are part of a very special group of students who have attended UTEP during its first century.

You are part of the legacy that began in September 94 when the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy opened and 2 students enrolled. Since then, the University’s name has changed several times, the physical campus and student enrollment have grown, the demographics have changed, the degree programs have expanded and the University’s reputation and impact have grown around the globe. But UTEP’s goal has not changed: to provide access to excellent educational opportunities to all students.

We hope you are part of the Centennial celebrations that have already begun and will continue through the end of the year.

Stay up to date with the latest Centennial news and events at www.utep00years.com.
