Hungarian Design awarD

The Hungarian Design award competition addresses designers and manufacturers with

the aim of recognising outstanding achievements of Hungarian design, promoting the

use of design and contributing to economic recovery with the tools of design.

The public award competition is announced by the Hungarian Design Council acting on behalf of

the Ministry for national economy. The Hungarian intellectual Property Office has undertaken the

task of operating the Hungarian Design Council — an advisory body with a three-year mandate — in

connection with its programme aimed at the promotion of innovation. The industrial Design niveau

award, which was the legal predecessor of the Hungarian Design award, was launched in 1980 and over

the years evolved into the most prestigious recognition of the design profession. in 2003 the Council

renewed the award competition both in its name and content. From this point on the award has been

announced not only in the original product category but also in the concept, visual communication and

student categories; and in addition, special prizes are awarded every year by the ministry for education,

culture and innovation policy as well as the Hungarian Design Council. an annually selected international

jury of independent professionals judges the projects in two stages with special emphasis being placed

on quality of design, originality, competitiveness as well as user- and environmental friendliness.

The gala awards ceremony, held every year, and the exhibition showcasing the fruit of the award

competition attract the distinct attention of the profession and the various players of the public sphere.

The winning works, which have thus far spanned a period of more than ten years,

have reflected the recent processes of the Hungarian economy and demonstrated

a diversity of creative and innovative solutions. it has gradually become clear that design

as a tool of innovation not only blends aesthetic and ethical considerations but also

technological, environmental, communication, cultural and marketing aspects.
