The Loyola MarymountUniversity athletic departmentwelcomed a new member to itsfamily of sports facilities withthe completion of the AquaticsComplex at the BurnsRecreation and AquaticsCenter in August of 2000.

The Olympic size pool ispart of the $20-million Burns Rec Centerand serves as the home venue for men'sand women's water polo as well as LMUswim meets. Showing that it is one of thefinest facilities in the country, LMU willhost the NCAA Men's Water PoloChampionship on December 7-8, 2002.

One of the premier aquatics facilitiesin Southern California, the Burns recre-ation center pool is heated and featuresan advanced deck-level drainage system. There are separate locker rooms for homeand visiting teams as well as office spaceand meeting rooms for the LMU aquatics'coaching staff. Adjacent to the pool is per-manent bleacher seating with a normalcapacity for 800 fans. For the NCAA Championships, the facilityÕs seating capacity willbe increased to 2,300.

Added to the facility in the fall of 2001 was a state-of-the-art scoreboard. The score-board from Colorado Timing Systems features scoring systems for both water polo andswimming, including the touch-pad timing for eight swim lanes. The fully digital systemincludes matrix and video capabilities and was installed thanks to the donations of AlGersten. In addition, a new audio system will be installed prior to the start of the 2002water polo season.

In two years in the facility, the two water polo programs have posted impressiverecords. The inaugural year of the facility was good to the Lions, as the teams combinedfor a 24-2 home record. The women's water polo team finished undefeated at Burns, going 14-0 on its way to the NCAA Championships. The men's team fared just as well, finishing its first season at the pool 10-2.

TT he Loyola Marymount UniversitymenÕs water polo team continues toestablish itself as one of the best in

the country, and for the 2002 year thepieces are in place for the Lions to defendtheir 2001 conference title and make anoth-er run at the NCAA MenÕs Water PoloNational Championships.

To accomplish the title defense severalthings have to be set-up: a successful sea-son the prior year, a returning nucleus oftop players, and some home-pool advan-tage in big games. All three will be in theLionsÕ favor in 2002.

The menÕs water polo program con-cluded its most successful season in schoolhistory in 2001 with its first Western WaterPolo Association championship, a trip tothe NCAA MenÕs WaterPolo Championship and athird-place finish, anational ranking of #7, a15-14 overall record, threeplayers named All-American and a coach ofthe year honor.

Head Coach JohnLoughran, who has wonthree straight coach of theyear honors in the WWPA(two women, one men),returns 13 players fromlast yearÕs squad, includ-ing All-Americans KevinPaulsen (G, 6-4, 185, Sr.,Morgan Hill, CA) andKevin Witt (DR, 6-2, 195,Sr., Glendale, CA).

And the final piece ofthe puzzle: the Lions will be hosting the2002 NCAA MenÕs Water PoloChampionships. It will be the first NCAAchampionship event hosted at LMU inschool history and will be held at the two-year old Burns Recreation and AquaticsCenter on December 7-8, 2002.

The 2001 season concluded with theLions losing in the NCAA semifinals toUCLA in the Final Four 7-5, outplaying theBruins the final half of the game. Theycame back in the third-place match andplayed what Loughran said was their bestgame of the year to crush Massachusetts,14-6. With the strong showing in the FinalFour, Loughran believes his team can takethe next step in 2002.

Witt and Paulsen lead a very talentedreturning core of players for the Lions.Witt has earned two straight second-teamAll-America honors and led all returning

players last year in goals scored with 42.Paulsen was named WWPA Player of theYear after he allowed just 13 goals in theLions three wins in the WWPAChampionships to claim their first confer-ence crown.

Projected to start or see major playingtime along with the two All-Americanswill be senior Andrew Jenson (2MM, 6-3,200, Newport Beach, CA), junior RyanChapatte (UTL, 6-5, 190, Soquel, CA), jun-ior Tamas Szego (DR, 6-2, 180, Budapest,Hungary), senior Adam Zintsmaster(UTL, 6-1, 200, Morgan Hill, CA) and jun-ior Kris Barr (UTL, 6-1, 180, Hollister, CA).

Both Jenson and Chapatte were amongLMUÕs scoring leaders in 2000 before theirredshirt season a year ago. Chapatte

scored 20 goals in 2000while playing in all 28games. Jenson had 10goals in 26 games.

Seven of the Lions top-10 scorers return for the2002 season. After WittÕs42 goals, which were sec-ond on the team, Szegowas third with 39, Barrwas fourth with 34 andZintsmaster was seventhwith 13 tallies.

With the scoring docu-mented, LoughranÕs keyto the 2002 season will bedefense. ÒOur focus of thisseason will be defense,ÓLoughran said. ÒWe haveso much talent defensive-ly, that in every game our

style of play will be to make it very diffi-cult for our opponent to score.Ó

In 2001, the Lions allowed five or fewergoals 18 times. Led by Paulsen in goal, who has allowed just 5.14 goals a game inhis career, and Witt, who Loughran con-siders one of the best two-meter defendersin the country, the Lions will be very diffi-cult to score against in 2002.

Also returning from the 2001 squadthat were among the top ten scorers will besenior Tim Roschke (DR, 6-1, 205,Houston, TX), junior Scott Smith (DR, 5-10, 175, Davis, CA), sophomore TrevorWagner (DR, 5-11, 175, Lafayette, CA), andsophomore Sean Wimer (DR, 5-11, 190,Long Grove, IL). Smith finished the seasonsixth on the team with 18 goals and added19 steals on the year. Wimer (ninth) fol-lowed with eight goals in just nine games, and Wagner and Roschke (tenth) each fin-

Supporting the University mission to encourage learningand the education of the whole person, the LearningResource Center (LRC) has made its primary mission thecultivation of knowledge and critical thinking in studentsthrough individual and small group tutoring.

The LRC, open to all students, plays a critical role in pro-viding academic support. Students can enlist the help offull-time specialists in writing, math, reading and studyskills. The LRC also has a peer tutoring staff trained toassist students in many University courses.

Students are encouraged to use the LRC to discussupcoming assignments, to prepare for exams or to reviewdrafts of papers. To utilize these services, students simply need to set up a free 30-minute orone-hour tutorial appointment.

One of the key student-support services offered by the LRC is the Academic MonitoringProgram. Student-athletes who participate meet weekly with an LRC academic specialist fora 15-minute appointment. Working with the specialist, the student-athlete learns to arrangestudy time, discusses upcoming assignments and develops a plan for academic success.Once a week, the specialist sends a team report to the coach, the Director of Athletics, theDirector of the Learning Resource Center and the special academic adviser assigned to theteam.

The Academic Monitoring Program offers a number of advantages for student-athletes:• Personal attention from an academic special-ist who guides the student-athlete in examiningand forming academic goals.• Time management and learning strategies, aswell as a review of the student-athlete’s weeklyplanner or schedule.• Encouraging the student-athlete to establishand maintain direct, effective communicationwith faculty. Open dialogue is frequently thekey to mastering subject matter.• If tutoring is recommended for a specificcourse, the specialist will ensure the student-athlete has a standing weekly appointment forthe remainder of the semester. • The specialist may arrange additional weeklymeetings to meet the needs of the student-ath-lete or may refer the student-athlete to anotherLRC specialist if additional expertise isrequired. The LRC also offers college-based programs:• The College of Science and Engineering incollaboration with the LRC offers small groupworkshops for students enrolled in Chemistry101.• Other colleges and departments offer smallgroup tutoring and/or workshops for particular-ly difficult courses; students should check withthe Coordinator, Student-Athlete AcademicServices to learn about these opportunities.

THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTERsuccess in the classroom:

LRC courses and sessions include:• Workshops (one-on-one or group) – Learn to manageyour time; overcome test anxiety; become a better reader;conquer math word problems; write, revise or review aresearch paper with a tutor; or develop other study skills.Students also have the option to work with any of the LRCspecialists to learn techniques for becoming more effectivereaders and writers.• Course Specific Tutoring – The LRC provides 50-minuteappointments with an assigned course-specific tutor.Students discuss key concepts, extract important informa-tion from texts, review daily class notes and compose essaysor papers. • Math Program – LRC math tutors assist students indeveloping skills and self-confidence when working withmath and statistics. Students obtain help with difficultconcepts and problems, acquire valuable test-taking strate-gies, learn to cope with math anxiety and acquire studyskills specific to math and statistics classes. • Writing Program – The program helps students meet thewriting demands of LMU courses. Working with writingspecialists or tutors, students brainstorm on a topic orassignment, outline a paper, work through the composingprocess, revise a draft in progress, and learn effective edit-ing techniques. • Reading Program – The program enhances comprehen-sion, reading rate, retention of textual information andvocabulary.

What do I need to do in order to play?If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a freshman, youmust register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-EligibilityClearinghouse. Your high school counselors should provide you with astudent-release form and a red brochure titled, "NCAA Guide for theCollege-Bound Student-Athlete." In order to be registered with the clear-inghouse, you must complete the student-release form and mail the top(white) copy of the form to the clearinghouse along with the $30 regis-tration fee. Give the yellow and pink copies of the form to a high-schoolofficial who then sends the yellow copy, along with an official copy of yourhigh-school transcript that includes your SAT or ACT score(s), to theclearinghouse. Your high school should keep the pink copy for its files. After graduation and before the school closes for the summer, your schoolalso must send the clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript that con-firms graduation from high school. Your counselors can obtain registra-tion materials, at no cost, by calling the clearinghouse at 319/337-1492.

How do I know if I'm being recruited? You become a "prospective student-athlete" when you start ninth-gradeclasses. Before the ninth grade, you become a prospective student-athleteif a college gives you (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid orother benefits that the college does not provide to prospective studentsgenerally. You become a "recruited prospective student-athlete" at a par-ticular college if any coach approaches you (or any member of your fam-ily) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activitiesby coaches that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-ath-lete are: (1) providing you with an official visit; (2) placing more thanone telephone call to you or any other member of your family; or (3) vis-iting you or any other member of your family anywhere other than thecollege campus.

Boosters: In addition to general recruiting regulations, no alumni, boosters or representatives of a college's athletics interests can be involvedin your recruiting. There can be no phone calls or letters from boosters. If an LMU booster is contacting you, please call the LMU ComplianceOffice as soon as possible at 310/338-7789.

When can I talk to the coach and have him/her see me play?Telephone Calls: In all sports other than football and basketball, phonecalls from staff members (but not boosters) are not permitted until July 1after completion of your junior year. In basketball, one telephone call toa prospect may be made on or after June 21 following the prospects jun-ior year. After this, a college coach or faculty member is limited to onetelephone call per week to you (or your parents or legal guardians),except that unlimited calls to you (or your parents or legal guardians)may be made under the following circumstances: (1) during the five daysimmediately before your official visit by the college you will be visiting;(2) on the day of a coach's off-campus contact with you by that coach;(3) on the initial date for signing the National Letter of Intent in yoursport through two days after the initial signing date; and (4) you (or yourparents) may telephone a coach at your expense as often as you wish. Atthe completion of your junior year (after July 1), coaches may also acceptcollect calls from you, using our toll-free number (1-800-LIONS-R-1).

Off-Campus Contacts: A college coach may contact you in person offthe college campus only on or after July 1 after the completion of yourjunior year in high school. A contact is any face-to-face meeting betweena college coach or athletics staff member and you or your parents, duringwhich any of you say more than “hello.” Also, any such face-to-facemeeting that is prearranged or that takes place on your campus, at anorganized competition or practice involving you or your high school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-star team shall be considereda contact, regardless of the conversation. Currently in all sports otherthan football, college coaches may contact you off the college campus nomore than three times. However, a college coach may visit your highschool (with the approval of your high school principal) only once a weekduring a contact period.
