Bison Continue To Be NCC FavoriteNDSU Sports Veteran, DeepTrack and Field Squad

If North Dakota State University track and field coachDON LARSON knows he's on the spot, the veteranBison mentor does not appear concerned. And why should he? Larson leads the premiere

program in the North Central Conference and the Bison willcontinue to be a force in the league--indoors and outdoors--in2001.

"We've got solid depth," said Larson, "and that willallow us to challenge in virtually every event in the NorthCentral Conference.

"We've got a solid group of upperclassmen and weappear to be pretty well-rounded. We have a very seasonedteam and an exceptional group of young men.

"We're excited and optimistic but we'd also like to berealistic."

The optimism stems from the fact that NDSU returnsfive individual champions from the indoor squad thatcaptured the conference championship with a league-record199 points last year. Outdoors, the Bison return threedefending champions. And, in both cases, a slew of return-ing placewinners fill the ranks of the team roster.

The Bison were knocked off the throne in the leagueoutdoor championships last year, ending a 13-year run as theNCC outdoor kings. That gives NDSU some added incen-tive.

South Dakota, rapidly become the arch-rival for theBison on the track, will be the chief competitor for the Herdand the Coyotes will be tough again, bringing out thatrealism in Larson.

BISON ATHLETES that earned 18 of the 26 place positions that scored in the NCC indoor meet in 2000 return for2001. Outdoors, the count has 22 of 32 2000 scoring place athletes back in the fold for the May spectacular.

NCAA Division II indoor track championships. Dewald was anAll-American, finishing fourth in the 400.

Senior Anthony Garnett is a two-time champion in theindoor 200 meters, two-time runnerup in the 100 metersoutdoors, and a three-time placewinner in the 200 metersoutdoors. Garnett is a multiple All-American, finishing sixth inthe nation in the outdoor 200 last year while running on threenational placewinning relay teams over the past two years. Heheadlines that sprint crew.

Junior Pat Irgens is a six-time conference placewinnerand gives the Bison a great 1-2 punch from 55 meters to 200meters.

Senior Aaron Dewald and juniors Luke Mosey and OnyMaianu give the Bison great strength in the long sprints.Dewald is the two-time defending league champion in the indoor500 and has fared no worse than third in either the 400 outdoorsor the 500 indoors in his first three seasons. Mosey captured the400 indoors last season in the NCC while Maianu is a two-timeplacewinner in the NCC in the individual long sprint events anda key member of several Bison relay teams.

The continued development of junior Ethan Opdahl andsophomore Ben Lee along with the addition of freshman JaredEssler should make the Bison deep and strong in the sprints.

“Our sprinters were a pretty solid group to begin with, andwhen you add a kid like Jared Essler to that group, things areonly going to get better,” said Larson. “We’ve had some greatrelay teams here and we’d like to think that we’ll be able tocontinue to produce those teams.”

The Bison continue to have strength in the hurdles.Seven-time conference hurdle champion and All-AmericanLuke Pfeifer is gone but the Bison can count on returning All-Conference hurdler Lee, Opdahl, and, freshman Nate Schmidt.Plus, multi-event star Craig Fredrickson will be eligible tocompete in the spring season to give the Bison even betterstrength.

DISTANCES: Junior Andrew Moen and senior JoeSmith competed in the indoor nationals in 2000 at 800 meterswith Moen earning All-American honors (4th) to give the Bisona solid start.

The base of the distance runners will come from the crosscountry team including national qualifier Chris Raabe. AaronKlingbeil, Greg Smock, and Darik Hoff also have a chance forbig things for the Herd. Junior redshirt Jason Alt and freshmanAdrian Friedel could also help.

JUMPS/VAULTS/THROWS: The return of All-American high jumper Brian Antoine and the addition of juniorRob Renschler in the long and triple jumps give the Bison solidthreats here. Juniors John Bauer (high jump) and Adam Carrwill also help.

The loss of Justen Lockhart (long and triple jumps) to aninjury and the redshirting of pole vaulter Tom Heilman willhave some impact. However, the Bison will pick up the slack inthe vault with senior Tim Earl and a host of other youngsters.

The throws feature sophomore Justin Camperud who

placed in both the shot put and weight throw in the NCC lastyear. Good depth comes from junior Peter Klemin and seniorsMatt Fee and Jason Harmon.

The strength of the Bison has always been the javelin inthe outdoor competition and that should be no different thisseason. NDSU has crowned the NCC javelin champion for thepast 17 seasons. Junior Carr and sophomore Matt Fischerplaced 3-4 in the NCC last season and return.

MULTI-EVENTS: Craig Fredrickson, Jay Hatleli, andNick Schauer all placed in the decathlon last season in the NCCand Fredrickson, the league champion the past two years, was anAll-American. That’s a formidable group.

“Traditionally, depth has been a strength for us,” Larsonsummed up. In the years where we’ve won championships,we’ve had not only that upper level of athletes who will wi theconference or place second, but some more who would take someof the other paces as well.

“I think we’ve got a good, balanced group.”That should equate out to another outstanding year for the

Bison thinclads.

The HerdNow this is the law of the prairie

As old and as true as the skyAnd the Bison that keep it will prosper

And the Bison that break it will dieAs the creeper that girdles the tree trunk

This law is the final word:For the strength of the HERD is the

BISONAnd the strength of the BISON is the

HERD

Why the Bison?North Dakota State University's athleticteams have progressed from the"Farmers" in the 1890s to the "Aggies"in the early 1900s, to the "Bison,"North Dakota State's current athleticsymbol. It was developed by headfootball coach Stan Borleske in 1919because he and members of the footballteam did not like being known as theAggies. Borleske wanted a strong andfierce mascot. The Bison was a logicalchoice. The great animals once roamedthe North Dakota prairie in vastnumbers, and over the years, Bisonathletic teams added an additionalname, the "Thundering Herd."

That ranks NDSUamong the top 30 in the nation--all divisions--and second among NCAA Division II schools. Five of those recipients have comefrom the men's track program.
