I am pleased to send warm greetings to Winter GuardInternational as you host your annual World Championships. This competition provides a great opportunity for color guardand percussion ensembles to demonstrate their talents and skillsand for people to view and listen to outstanding performances.
Participating in activities such as a color guard or percussionensemble can be part of a well-rounded education. Youngpeople performing in such programs learn discipline, focus, andteamwork that can help them in the classroom and in their futurecareers. I commend your participants for their achievements, andI encourage them to keep setting high goals as they prepare fornew challenges ahead. I also salute their parents and instructorsfor their encouragement and support of your efforts.
Best wishes on this special occasion.

Greetings and Welcome
Twenty-four years ago, WGI held its first Championship contest not far from Milwaukee. It was atime of excitement, anticipation and enthusiasm. Some thirty guards met for the first time in nationalcompetition. Today 258 Color Guards and105 percussion lines convene for a whole new level ofcompetition destined to crown new champions and create new memories for thousands of young people.
This contest is of specific importance to me since the memories it will provide will culminate 24 yearsof involvement in the most amazing activity available to young people. This will be the last WorldChampionship I will coordinate since I will be retiring shortly thereafter.
It is with particular pride, great nostalgia and the warmest feelings that I welcome each and every oneof you to this 24th Championship. I wish for the performers the greatest experience of their lives;I wish for the judges the fullest and most accurate scoring of their careers, and I wish for the fans themost enjoyable and entertaining experience of the season.
To the wonderful and selfless volunteer staff, my heartfelt thanks. I hope that all of you will continueto support this wonderful activity, and I hope that each one of you, performers, fans, judges and staffwill enjoy years of wonderful memories to come.
Sincerely,
Lynn LindstromExecutive Director

Winter Guard Internationalis pleased to be in Milwaukee for this spectacular event. An event of this magnitude doesnot take place without the support of many people. I would like to thank the office staffand the many volunteers that make this weekend the biggest moment in pageantry.
Nearly 8,000 young people from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Japan willbe performing this weekend. It is truly an international moment. As an audience, pleaseshow your support for the young people here this weekend. The performers are working toentertain each of you with their efforts.
I would like to encourage each of you to visit the various performing venues. Color guardand percussion performance are within walking distance of each other. Winter GuardInternational is proud of each of these divisions.

After nearly 25 years of untiringand dedicated service to the pageantryarts, WGI’s Chief Executive Officerwill retire effective June 1, 2001.
When WGI was formed, the vision-aries of what was then only a dreamhad the foresight to select a woman ofthe highest integrity and ethics to leadthe infant organization. That womanwas Lynn Lindstrom. At that time,Lynn was the Commander of theMidwest Color Guard Circuit, andeven then had a reputation for hon-esty, integrity and dedication.
With the unanimous support of theassembled color guards at that his-toric meeting, she was given theresponsibility to turn this “dream”into a reality.
Many of us smile with the sweetmemory of that first year when WGIoperated on a budget of $300, whenLynn sewed the first Championshipflag, and when 30 color guards metfrom across the country for the veryfirst time. The creation of this infantorganization was built on trust and
respect not only between those firstcompeting color guards, but also forthe person who would be the beaconfor what would become the largestpageantry organization in the world.
The guards came from the East,Midwest and West in a competitionof such innocence and joy that it’s likehas never been duplicated. Those firstfifteen finalists, Quasar, PhantomRegiment, Seattle Imperials, Colts,St. Anthony’s of Everett, MarcusWhitman, Buccaneers, Cavaliers,Golden Knights, Conquistadors,Lindenaires, Valiants, Accents, FoxValley Raiders, and Norwin Knightsknew a moment of unity which hasnever been duplicated, and that firstchampionship flag which Lynn made,is no doubt more cherished than anytrophy or title since.
Each step taken in WGI’s growthbecame a discovery that motivatedsubsequent steps with anticipationand the kind of joy that is only expe-rienced when one has no real idea ofthe destiny awaiting the maturity ofthe dream. Lynn was there to guideeach one of those steps of discovery. Many were her own ideas, and somewere the result of Lynn’s open will-
ingness to listen to and to hear thegrowing number of voices whobrought ideas and concepts to her“open door.”
The first qualities that set Lynnapart were integrity, honesty andtrust. This list soon grew as it becameclear that she was a leader of all of thepeople, never placing any individualor group in an elite category, butfinding value in each individual whocomprised the growing WGI family. The newest or longest serving volun-teer, the most uninformed but eagerinstructor, the most struggling unit, the novice judge, and the most high-strung designer, all held the highestvalue in Lynn’s vast communicationnetwork.
Under her watch, the Percussionand the Marching Band Divisionswere born and are flourishing.Under her watch, the Division ofEducation was created and nowserves the development of judges andunits throughout the United States,Canada and Europe. Under her watchunits have journeyed to the UnitedStates from Japan, Africa, Holland,
England, and Canada. Under herwatch the scholastic divisions havegrown and in many cases havereplaced the decline in the arts in ourpublic schools. And under her watchour Scholarship program has grownto impressive proportions. Everythingshe ever focused on was always andforever to benefit the kids.
She is watchful, she is protective, she is generous, she is strong and sheis determined. She has served WGI tothe fullest of her abilities for greaterthan two decades. The lifeblood ofher efforts will be perpetuatedthrough the incredible opportunitiesshe has created for so many thousandsof young performers, growing design-ers and loyal volunteers. A simplethank you is far too inadequate for alifetime of service such as this.

“On the starting line...”No matter how many times I’ve
heard those words over the past twodecades, I still get a little nervousevery time I hear them.
I vividly remember what it was tobe standing on that dreaded “start-ing line,” each second ticking by likean eternity; waiting impatiently, almost excruciatingly, for the firstnotes of the soundtrack that hadengrained itself in my mind tobegin. If you were ever lucky enoughto be a performer in this wonderfulactivity, you know exactly what I’m
talking about. You’re trying not tothink about everything that is ridingon this performance, yet you realizethat this is WGI, the pinnaclemoment of the season. What hap-pens in the next six minutes will liveforever in your mind, and on video!
“Is the guard ready!?”Welcome to Winter Guard
International World Championships— you’re going to hear those wordsquite a few times this weekend. Andevery time you hear them, there’s agroup of young men and women infront of you who have been waitingand working a very long time forthis moment.
If you’re sitting in the audience atnationals for the first time, welcometo our world. Whether you’re here tocheer on a friend or family member,or simply out of curiosity, we thankyou for your support and hope thatyou will be as thrilled by your firstWGI experience as many of us were.
For those of us who return yearafter year, WGI is much more thanthe most spectacular color guards
and drum lines in the world. This iswhere we first began our journey toadulthood.
It was during the countless hoursof rehearsals that we learned aboutwork ethic, discipline, time manage-ment, sacrifice, and the importanceof teamwork. These are the skillsthat would carry us through oureducation, and later guide us outinto the “real world.”
Through this amazing activity, many of us were introduced to theethereal beauty of music, dance, andart. Seldom does a day go by whenwe don’t recognize a piece of classi-cal, jazz, or pop music we first heardon the winter guard floor. When thefilm Pollack was recently released, anyone who attended WGI five yearsago was undoubtedly reminded ofthe Scholastic Champions’ perform-
ance based on the life of JacksonPollack, one of the most importantabstract artists of the 20th century.
As marching members, we came toseek out and cherish the reward ofperforming for thousands of appre-ciative fans. Many of us have gone onto be instructors and designers, striv-ing to create shows that would allowour students to experience the samejoy of performance that we did.
Perhaps most importantly, theemotional bonds and friendshipsthat we forged during our years asperformers and instructors are theones that have remained with us therest of our lives. Yes, we enjoy thethrilling performances of the guardsand drum lines as much as ever —but we also come to WGI to catchup with our dearest old friends too.
Of course, WGI is a competition. And while some of these performershope to walk away from this week-end with a gold medal hangingaround their necks, most just wantto do their best and in return, askonly for your applause and cheers asconfirmation of a job well done.Don’t let them down.
With all of the troubling news inthe national media, it’s easy to becynical about our youth today. Butas WGI embarks on its 25th year, let
us look back on the thousands ofremarkable young people who havecome through our activity, and whowere inspired to greater achieve-ments, long after they’d “nailed”their last rifle toss or executed theirfinal drum roll. The young men andwomen before you are truly extraor-dinary, and give us all ample reasonto be hopeful about the future of ournation.
They are, without a doubt, ready!
“You may take the floorfor competition!”

WGI2001
Adjudication
Color Guard JudgesThe art of judging is a skill which is
developed over an extensive period oftime; it is one which requires ongoingeducation and deep commitment.
Individuals must be successful as ajudge in their local area for a mini-mum of two years before applicationto WGI is considered. Before beingallowed to participate in the WGItraining program, they complete ahome study of their caption spendingupwards to 40 hours on this require-ment. Participation at regional clinicsand trialing through regional acade-mies is their next step before partici-pating in the Academy of PageantryArts held at the Championships eachyear. This final step is an intensifiedprogram covering eight hours of classroom study as well as trial judging
nearly 80 of the competing units inthat event. Their work is carefullyscrutinized before they are consideredeligible for the role to which they areapplying.
Once a WGI judge, education isongoing including an annual summerstudy program and an annual week-end meeting for advanced develop-ment. These dedicated men andwomen are an important, oftenunder-appreciated part of the triad of“Performer-Designer-Adjudicator”.
Percussion JudgesThe individuals adjudicating the
percussion ensembles are among themost highly talented and respectedpercussion experts in the country.Selected first on their accomplish-ments and the respect accorded themwithin the community, these leadersthen undertake another layer of edu-cation relative to the unique aspect ofadjudication.
They trial judge, they completehome study projects, and they cometogether for a weekend each year toextend the range of their already highstandards in order to serve the per-formers who fall under their experteye in the process of competition.
Color GuardAdjudicationThere always seems to be a mys-
tique which surrounds the scoringprocess in any competition, howeverquite simply judges always score twoaspects of the performance: “What isbeing done” and “How it is beingachieved”.
Because our scoring system is aneducationally based program, there isa curriculum designed for each classreflecting the level of their particulardevelopment. In each class expertsevaluate and reward the specificswhich the designers have emphasizedwithin that curriculum.
Five experts focus on the following:Two General Effect judges react to theoriginality, creativity and entertain-ment quality of the total show, credit-ing the designers who create the vehi-cle for the performers. They equallyreward the performers for their abilityto communicate that show to theaudience, demonstrating the techni-cal, expressive and emotional skillsrequired to bring the show to life.
One judge evaluates the quality andmerit within the composing processwhereby equipment, body and stag-ing blend together to create the “blueprint” which defines the structure ofthe program. This is the designer’spiece of the Ensemble Analysis ScoreSheet. Performers are rewarded inequal parts for skills of a technical andexpressive quality, which showcasetheir development and understandingof equipment, body and staging.
Two judges evaluate both thevocabulary and the achievement ofthe equipment and the movementresponsibilities, responding to therange, development and performanceof the moves within the Equipmentand the Movement programs.Performers are credited for their train-ing and expertise in this area, focusingon a curriculum specifically designedfor their level of development.
PercussionAdjudicationThree areas of consideration are
evaluated in the process of assigningscores to Percussion Ensembles.
The overall effectiveness and enter-tainment value of the percussion pro-gram is measured and rewarded. Herethe judge evaluates the musical reper-toire, its quality, creativity, and pres-entation together with the visual con-siderations of staging, coordination, and delivery.
Another judge measures the musicaltraining and development of the play-ers’ technical skills and their ability todisplay quality and musicianship inthe musical performance of theirshow.
A third judge focuses on the visualpresentation, measuring the depthand quality of the visual design, thepresentation of the musical elementsand the training and excellencedemonstrated by the performers inthis area.

The concept of the travelingtrophies was conceived in Decemberof 1991. Over time the concept hasbeen refined and when fundingbecame available, the sculpture wascommissioned in 1994. The artistselected was Dennis Sohocki ofDenver, Colorado. His award win-ning sculptures are represented inpublic and private collections inAmerica and Europe.
Dennis Sohocki’s abstract theme iscreated in bronze and hardwood. Theunique qualities of each carefullyfinished sculpture suggests graceand strength on a scale recognizingthe achievement of a WorldChampionship. The engraving of allIndependent and Scholastic Worldchampions on the base of each trophyis a testimony to those units whohave achieved one of the ultimateaccolades in pageantry.
