PURIM CRAZINESS TO DEGRADE GREENBERG SANCTUARY

"We hired him, now we have to live with him." "There's no business like show business, and he's got no busi­ness in show business." "I laughed, I cried, I wished I was at home watching television." These are just a few of the comments generated by last year's Purim Ser­vice and Schpiel.

Join us for Dinner on Monday, March 17 at 6:00 p.m. followed at 7:00 p.m. by a Purim service and Megillah reading, complete with song and dance by our "Not Ready for Shabbat Services Players." Rabbi Kopnick promises to humiliate himself by producing a fun and irreverent look at the Purim story, all to a theme taken right out of popular culture.

To make reservations for the dinner, call the Temple office. No reservations are needed for the service-a costume, however, would be nice-would it kill you?

Dear Friends,

Exodus teaches us that the people build a sacred space­a tabernacle in order to respond to the command, "Make for Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them." After leaving Egypt and traipsing through the Dessert, God . understands that people need special places in order to feel more keenly a sense of God's presence. Our sanc­tuary at the Temple is heir to that idea.

This year marks the 29th year since the dedication of that sacred space. In that time, you have heard Rabbi Greenberg's remarkable high holy day sermons, been present at life-cycle events, heard glorious music that easily ascended toward Heaven, and much more. In our short time together, more and more of you have become "repeat offenders" ·at servkes, incorporating Shabbat worship as part of your weekend.

In the last few weeks, we were blessed with remark­able Bar and Bat Mitzvahs (b'nei mitzvah) of our stu­dents who are achieving at high levels in our revamped program. They are confidently leading us in worship, reading and translating Torah, and speaking intelligently about what they've read. By their participation, by your attendance, and by the other elements of the service

I (including our music!), we are truly creating a sacred , space. I

A rabbi was once asked how he accounts for the tre­mendous mood that some services (but not all) can cre­ate. The music is good, he was told-and yet one week, in particular, ~eemed to be deeper, the praying more sincere, the feelings more intense. His response was both simple and remarkable: "Its not just about the choreography 'and the musical choices, sometimes the energy that worshippers bring coupled with an indi­viduals needs ean make for a very intense experience." Imagine it, its not soely an issue of the service leader or the ~usicians-but our members bring an energy to a service, without which the service is lack­ing something.

Please be a part of our energy with your attendance!

Remember, our sanctuary is only sacred if we invite God's presence to join us-and we want and need your body! To all of our new regulars, we' re glad you're with us. For all of our soon to be regulars, come on in the water's fine!

BIMAH BOOK CLUB TO FOCUS ON "THE NEW RABBI" BY STEPHEN FRIED

The New Rabbi chronicles a conservative congregation's journey to fmd a new spiritual leader. Their rabbi, famed Rabbi Gerald Wolpe was to return after thirty years. This book gives a glimpse into the search process, the life of a rabbi, and the many functions and dysfunctions of American Jewish .synagoguelife. , ..

Rabbi Kopnick will review the book from the Bimah on Friday, March 28,2003. You are encouraged to read the book prior to services. However, if you don't get a chance to read the book, please feel free to join us for the discussion-whether you were part of the search to find Rabbi Greenberg or Rabbi Kopnick, or just want to know more about the book!

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PHILOSOPHY OF DR. ABRAHAM JOSHUA HESCHEL

Save April 8, 22, and 29, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. for more adult learning at the Valley Temple. Rabbi Tom Heyn, Chaplain at Cedar Village will discuss the life and thought of Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel, a 20th Century rabbi and theologian. His landmark books, the Sabbath and Quest for God, and Man is not Alone are just a few of the major contributions Dr. Heschel brought to Judaism.

Dr. Heschel's thought has been widely read and quoted by persons of all faiths-not just by Jews. A Civil Rights rabbi, Rabbi. Heschel has been a champion offreedom's cause until his untimely death in 1972 at the age of 65. Join us as you find out more about this remarkable man and his ideas!

EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT PASSOVER ...

Ever wonder what you need to make a seder? Why is the Hagadah organized the way it is? What are some songs we can sing at our seder? Why doesn't my charoset taste as good as Granny Carol's or Bubbe Ida's? The outreach committee announces a special Passover work­shop to help answer these questions and more on Tues­day, March 25, 2003 at 7:00 p.m.

We will use the resources of Rabbi Kopnick and the cook­ing skills of Heather Oppenheimer and others as we com­bine the tastes of Passover with the traditions and ritu­als. This hands-onlhow-to workshop is geared toward those with no or little experience with creating a seder and/or understanding the holiday. Reservations are needed to help us plan for the food. There is no charge for the program-simply call the Temple office or email to Marsha@valleytemple.com to make your reserva­tion.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS

Our year is halfway over. Report cards for first semes­ter will be out soon. We have a wonderful and dedi­cated faculty. I'd like to take this opportunity to intro­duce them to you.

Joanna Zellhuber is our preschool teacher. She has taught preschool at Valley for many years. She is a teacher with Cincinnati Public Schools during the week.

Michelle Werner is our kindergarten teacher. She is a second year HUC student. Before her year in Israel, she lived in New Zealand and France for almost 20 years.

Kathie Tamarkin is our 1 s l and 2nd grade teacher. This is Kathie's second year teaching at Valley. She works for Jewish Family Service during the week. She is a long-time member of Valley Temple.

Brian Meeron is our third grade teacher. This is his first year at Valley. He is a mathematics teacher at Winton Woods High School during the week.

Sam Lobar is our fourth grade teacher. Sam has been teaching at Valley since 1991 . He was also co­director of the Religious School from 1995-1998. He is the Area Director for the Developm~nt Corporation for Isr~el-State of Israel Bonds.

Charlie Cytron Walker is our 51h and 61h grade teacher. He is a second year HUC student. He also teaches our children Hebrew on Tuesday nights.

Rebecca Milder is our music teacher. She is a first year student at HUC. She has been a Jewish educa­tor for many years, including teaching music, serving as a family educator, and running a small religious school in Boston.

Carolyn Levine is our dance teacher. She is a proud member of Valley Temple. She is the spontane­ous dance initiator for the Cincinnati Klezmer Project.

Kari Field is our family education coordina­tor. This is her second year teaching at Valley. She is a fifth year student at HUe.

Janey Jaslow is a Hebrew teacher on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights. She is a long time mem­ber of Valley and she has been teaching in our religious

school for many years. She is a pottery maker.

Karen Bodney is one of our Hebrew teach­ers. She was Rabbi Kopnick's rabbinic intern in Fort Wayne. She is a fifth year HUC student.

Our family education program has been a success. It is so great to see so many parents and grandparents showing our children the importance of family learn­ing. You should have received a schedule for the year. If you do not have your copy, please let me know and I will send home a new one. It is very important that you attend family ed. with your child. We have had good attendance so far and it is very hard on the one or two children whose parent does not come.

Our Purim carnival is on March 23 . It will be after Sunday school. Look for details coming soon from a religious school student near you!

Ivan Tamarkin, President of the Men's Club will deliver the congregational announcements and Rabbi Kopnick will speak on the subject, "Spiri­tuality Among the Sexes."

A special oneg-Shabbat will follow the service spon­sored by the Men's Club. The entire congregation is encouraged to attend.
