This is YaleHistory Yale University, founded in 1701, is the third-oldestcollege in the United States and one of the foremostresearch universities in the world. First known as theCollegiate School, it changed its name in 1718 to honorbenefactor Elihu Yale.

Students Since its first class, which had only one pupil,Yale has expanded into a university with 5,200 un-dergraduates and 11 graduate and professionalschools with roughly 5,800 students. Women wereadmitted to graduate schools in 1892 and to theundergraduate college in 1969. Today they makeup about 50 percent of the enrollment. Studentscome from all 50 states and over 70 countries.

Men’s Cross CountryThis fall is the Bulldogs’ fifth season under the command of Dan Ireland and it has the potential to be the most successful. The Elis are

coming off a very exciting 2003 that saw them finish third at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships and fourth at the NCAA DistrictQualifier, in addition to having an individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships. This season, there is strong sense of determination toachieve Yale’s most successful cross country season ever. The third-place finish was the Elis’ best showing at the Heps in more than 10 yearsand helped three athletes earn All-Ivy status.

When Ireland arrived at Yale, he established goals of taking Yale to the top of the Ivy League and solidifying the Bulldogs as a perennialcross country favorite and potential NCAA qualifier. This season should finally show that the Bulldog program has reached that level. The 2004squad will have a mix of veteran harriers and excited youth with the talent and dedication to make a strong bid to become Yale’s first-ever IvyLeague Heptagonal Games champions. In addition, the squad has the potential to become the only Yale men’s team ever to compete in theNCAA Championships.

The team is captained by senior Lucas Meyer, who is coming off one of the best junior years ever by a Bulldog. Meyer was a participantat the NCAA Championships in cross country and in outdoor track in the 3000m steeplechase. Indoors, he set the school record in the 5000mand was also an NCAA provisional qualifier in that event. His strong dedication and leadership, in addition to his athletic success, will beessential to the success of thisyear’s team. Look for Meyer tomake a run to become Yale’s firstIvy League cross country cham-pion since 1991.

The rest of the seniorplays an equally important roleon this year’s squad. Casey Mo-

riarty and Josh Yelsey were bothconsistent top-four performers onlast season’s squad. Moriarty wasthe IC4A cross country championand ran sub-25:00 at VanCortlandt Park in addition to hisseventh-place finish at the Heps. Yelsey should again provide veteran leadership in the big races while individually looking to garner All-Ivystatus. Both of these seniors possess the ability to be top five finishers at the Ivy Championships.

The junior class is a huge factor in the success of the Bulldogs’ season. Patrick Dantzer, Andrew Johnson, Wyatt Golding, Mark

Turner, Eric Brown, and Scott Peachman will contribute tremendously to the team’s depth and quality. Dantzer was the fifth man for theBulldogs last season and looks to improve upon that position. He had a great track season, posting times of 4:09 (as the anchor leg on thedistance medley relay), 8:20 (3000m), and 14:36 (5000m) on the track. Johnson was a consistent top-seven runner last season and hasaspirations of breaking into the top five. Golding and Turner had solid sophomore campaigns but are looking to improve this fall. They have thepotential to be consistent top-seven performers for the Blue. Peachman and Brown add the quality depth that is necessary to have a successfulcross country squad.

The sophomore class may turn out to be the heart of the squad, highlighted by David Napper and Andrew Pitts. Napper comes off a yearin which he was the best freshman distance runner in the league in both cross country (only freshman to be All-Ivy) and on the track, in additionto setting four school freshman records. Pitts’ freshman campaign was affected by injury, but he is healthy now and looks to be one of not onlyYale’s top harriers, but one of the Ivy League’s as well. In high school he was a two-time Massachusetts state cross country champion, inaddition to finishing in the top 20 at the Foot Locker Northeast Region Championships in both his junior and senior seasons. Both Napper andPitts are tremendous harriers who will play a very important role in the success of this year’s squad. Brian Hanak, Brian Gertzen, Nathan

Clute, and Taylor Matthews will compete for a spot on the varsity squad and add the determination and devotion that is necessary to makea championship team.

The freshman class is talented but unproven. Tadhg O’Callaghan (Cork, Ireland) has the most cross country experience of the group. He was a member of the Irish junior team that competed at the European Championships, and he has run 3:57 for 1500m. Joe Kingsbery

(Shrewsbury, NJ) has untapped potential. In just one season of high school cross country running he showed that he was one of the top athletesin New Jersey and ran 1:55 (800m) and 4:17 (mile) on the track. Connor Kilpatric (Seattle, WA) brings the same success along withinexperience to the cross country course. In just his second year of cross country running he was runner-up at the Washington State CrossCountry Championships, and in the spring he was a state finalist in the 800m. These three athletes possess the ability and talent to ensure thatthe success of Yale cross country continues for the next several years.

Women’s Cross CountryThe 2004 Yale women’s cross country team should once again contend for the Heptagonal Ivy League championship and a berth in the

NCAA Championship. Boasting three Foot Locker finalists and two runners-up from last spring’s outdoor Heps, the team is young, talentedand deep.

The Elis will be led by senior captain Anne Martin, Yale record holder and NCAA Regional qualifier in the 3000m steeplechase. She wasrunner-up in that event at the outdoor Heps and third in the ECACs as well. A fierce competitor, she will provide terrific leadership for whatis a young team. Senior Susan Chan

was consistently in Yale’s top five a yearago, and finished fifth overall at the 2003ECAC Championships. She too is a ter-rific competitor and good leader.

Yale’s top returnee from lastyear’s team is sophomore Cara Kier-

nan. Fifth at Heps, she was an NCAAqualifier in cross country and at 5,000meters in outdoor track. With a 16:175K PR, Cara should continue to be at ornear the front of the pack for the Elis.

Sophomores Ashley Campbell,Katie McKinstry and Claire Hamil-

ton also figure to be in Yale’s top group. Campbell was second at outdoor Heps in the 1500m, running 4:29, while McKinstry was 13th at theECAC Cross Country Championships. Hamilton finished off a strong freshman campaign by qualifying for the regionals in the steeplechase.

Adding to Coach Mark Young’s optimism is the addition of freshman Lindsay Donaldson. In her first season of cross country,Donaldson was a 2003 Foot Locker finalist, finishing 16th. She capped off her brilliant high school career with a 4:46 mile at the 2004 outdoornationals. She should make an immediate impact on the Yale team.

Further contributions are expected from senior Vanessa Everding, junior Lauren Davis, junior Katie Matlack, freshman Betsy

Boucher and freshman Liz Calle.

Men’s Track & Field With the graduation of only four seniors, the 2004-2005 Yale men’s track and field team will have a distinctly veteran look this year.

A large influx of talent in a number of different event areas should make an immediate impact. When combined with a solid group of veteran IvyLeague and IC4A scorers, the outlook for the Bulldogs is bright.

The news of an exciting upgrade to the track and infield in Coxe Cage makes the anticipation for the new campaign even higher, as theidea of competing and practicing in one of the top facilities in the nation has renewed the focus of the Eli athletes. Starting in December of 2004,Coxe Cage will be home to a new, state-of-the-art 200m banked Mondo track and a newly surfaced Mondo infield. The new facility, combinedwith a tremendous influx of talent, ushers in a new era of optimism for Yale track and field.

Sprints and Hurdles – Over the last 10 years the sprints and hurdles group has been one of the foundations of Bulldog track and fieldsuccess. 2004-2005 should prove to be no different as the Elis field one of the strongest sprint/hurdles groups in the Ivy League. Junior Rob

Delaski leads a tremendous group of long sprinters and comes off of a terrific sophomore season in which he was a scorer in the 500m at theindoor Ivy League (HEPS?) Championships and anchored Yale’s 4x400m relay to scoring performances both indoors and out. His classmate,Kevin Alexander, improved tremendously as a sophomore, earning a spot in the finals at the indoor Ivy League Championship and running intothe all-time Yale top 10 in both the 200m and 400m outdoors. They’ll be joined by two freshmen: Chris Tingue, an all-state selection fromNew York in the 400m, and Michael Camarda. Sophomore Corey Vaughn is back in New Haven after a one-year leave of absence and shouldreturn to the form that made him a finalist in the 400m as a freshman. In the short sprints, sophomore Russ Kempf looks to improve on whatwas an incredible freshman year. Kempf garnered All-Ivy accolades by placing second in the 60m indoors and the 100m outdoors as a freshmanand is looking for Ivy Championships in those events. He’ll be pushed by classmate Omari Douglas-Hall and two promising freshmen inVictor Cheng (Washington state champ at 100m) and Brandon Giles, a California Southern Section finalist in the 100m and 200m.

Juniors Shomari Taylor and Michael Brown come off a great 2004 outdoor season in which they both scored at the Ivy LeagueChampionship in the 400m hurdles. Taylor just missed All-Ivy honors by placing third, while Brown earned his first points for Yale by placingfifth. Two super freshmen will be called upon for high hurdling duty and should be immediate contributors to the Bulldog cause. Dan O’Brien

was the runner-up in the 110m hurdles in Rhode Island while James Carter was the state champ in Kansas in both the 110m hurdles and the300m hurdles. O’Brien was also the state and New England champion in the 400m.

Both sprint relays should challenge for league titles as the mix of youngsters and experienced vets will give the coaching staff manyoptions for staffing them.

Middle Distance – The mid-distance group has long been the hallmark of the Yale track and field team. That holds true for 2004-2005, as Yale returns some of the top middle distance men in the league. 2003-2004 saw both the indoor and outdoor 4x800m relay teams garnerAll-East recognition. The indoor squad ended the season as the Ivy League runner-up for the second year in a row and posted the fourth-best3200m relay time in the nation. Outdoors, Yale was one of only four colleges that were invited to participate in all three distance relays (4x800m,distance medley relay, and 4xMile) at the prestigious Penn Relays. Individually, senior captain Casey Moriarty heads the impressive groupalong with senior Josh Yelsey, who comes off of a breakthrough campaign that saw him earn All-Ivy honors in the 1500m outdoors by virtueof his second-place finish. Yelsey also anchored Yale’s school-record breaking, and NCAA-qualifying, indoor distance medley relay in addition

to qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in the 1500m. Moriarty leads a confident and hard-working group of youngsters into the indoor andoutdoor seasons and will look to improve on great performances of his junior year. Juniors Reed Mauser and Mark Falco earned All-Easthonors in 2004 as members of the IC4A scoring 4x800m relay (both indoor and outdoor). Along with sophomores Nate Clute and Brian

Gertzen, they will be looked upon to contribute in individual events as well. The anticipated return to form of junior Courtland Keteyian andthe addition of freshmen Christo-

pher Smitson (fourth place at theindoor nationals) and Matthew Bor-

doni, a finalist in the 800m in Cali-fornia as a junior, make this group asformidable as ever.

Distance – Senior crosscountry captain Lucas Meyer comesoff an MVP year in 2003-2004 inwhich he was the Ivy League cham-pion in the 3000m steeplechase andan NCAA outdoor participant in thesame event. He was Yale’s firstNCAA distance participant since1991. Meyer looks to improve onhis second-place finish in the 5000mindoors at the Ivy League Champi-onships and leads an impressivegroup of distance men. Senior Ca-

sey Moriarty will split time betweenthe mile and the longer distances andhopes to improve on his sixth-placefinish at the 3000m indoors at theIvy League Championships. SeniorJosh Yelsey showed tremendousrange last year, occasionally contrib-uting in the 3000m. Junior Andy

Johnson was a consistent top-sevenperformer in cross country last yearand looks to contribute on the track in 2004-05. Sophomore David Napper comes off a tremendous freshman campaign in which he shatteredthree Yale freshman records: the indoor mile, indoor 5000m and outdoor 10,000m. Sophomore Andrew Pitts should contribute after an injury-riddled freshman year. Look for freshmen Tadhg O’Callaghan (an Irish U19 cross country team member), Joe Kingsbery (an all-Stateselection in New Jersey) and Connor Kilpatric (a Washington state cross country runner-up) to make immediate contributions.

Jumps – Junior Jihad Beauchman established himself among the top jumpers in the Ivy League in 2004 and looks to capitalize onthe talent that brought him All-East honors outdoors. Beauchman placed fourth at the outdoor Ivy League Championships in the high jump andfollowed up that performance with a seventh-place finish at the IC4A championships in the triple jump. His continued hard work andimprovement will surely put him near the top of the league in the year to come. Junior Shomari Taylor has shown flashes of brilliance in thelong jump and will be called upon to handle those duties along with his intermediate hurdling. Taylor looks to break into the all-time Yale top10 in the event this year. Senior Jordan Chapman leads a talented trio of pole vaulters. As a junior Chapman just missed qualifying for the IC4AChampionships in the vault. This year, with sophomore Matt Lachman and junior Adam Presser, the vault group looks to make an impactat the Ivy League Championships. Chapman might also be called upon to use his considerable athletic ability as a high jumper.

Throws – Look for sophomore John Langhauser to improve on his fine freshman campaign. He showed great potential and will becounted upon to contribute in both the shot put and discus on the Ivy League Championship level. Langhauser will also be asked to add thehammer and weight throw to his repertoire. Junior Doug Czerwinski makes a return to competition in the javelin after a year off because ofelbow surgery. After a year of hard work and rehabilitation, Czerwinski hopes to make his mark at the Ivy League Championships.

Women’s Track & FieldThe Bulldogs should be a strong contender for the Heptagonal Ivy crown again this year. Featuring the best sprinting and jumping corps

ever at Yale and bolstered by a strong middle- and long-distance groups, this Yale team could make history.Sprints – Junior Joslyn Woodard has won Heps titles at 60m, 100m and 200m in her first two years at Yale. She owns Yale records at

all three distances, lowering the outdoor 200 mark to a sparkling 24.06 at last year’s ECACs. Sophomore Katrina Castille was the 2004indoor Hep champ at 60m. Senior Aisha Cort has been a Heps finalist and scorer at both 60 and 100 meters and she is second on the all-timeYale 100-meter list. Senior Candace Arthur has likewise been a Heps finalist at 200m, and with a PR of 24.88 she is also on the all-time list. These four teamed to finish second at the 2004 Outdoor Heps in the 4x100m relay. In the longer sprints, sophomores Jessica Pall and Katie

Dlesk expect to improve on their outstanding freshman campaigns. Pall’s PRs (57.55 at 400 and 25.38 at 200) ranked her among the league’stop 10 in 2004. Dlesk’s bests are 58.1 in the 400m indoors and 63.78 in the 400 meter hurdles outdoors. Joining the two sophomores will befreshman standout Ali Dodson. She posted high school PRs of 56.83 in the 400 and 25.06 in the 200.

Hurdles – Captain Katrina Svoboda leads the hurdlers. Her 61.06 PR is fourth on the Yale all-time list for the 400m hurdles and shehas posted an 8.70 for the 55m hurdles as well. Junior Kate Lawson looks to have a breakout year. Her PR of 62.03 could go a long way toward

making the hurdle area a Yale strength. Freshman Christa Hutchinson has run 44 for the 300m hurdles. She hopes to continue a long traditionof excellence for Yale in the 400m hurdles.

Jumps – The jumps will also continue to be a Yale strength this year. Woodard has won the long jump at both the indoor and outdoorHeps in each of her first two years at Yale. Svoboda, Castille and freshman Andrea Jacobs all have jumped over 18 feet in the past. JuniorDionna Thomas will again lead Yale in the triple jump. With a PR of 40’.5”, Thomas has consistently been among the top three triple jumpersat Heps. Freshman Andrea Jacobs has a PR of 38’ and should provide depth for the Elis. The pole vault will also continue to be a Yale strength.Junior Molly Lederman cleared 13 feet last year. and won the indoor Heps and tied for second outdoors. Sophomore Ashley Nolet battlednagging injuries, but posted a best of 12’3.5” and scored in both the indoor and outdoor Heps. The loss of outdoor Heps champion and Yalecaptain Lisa Wygant to graduation leaves the Bulldogs with no proven high jumper. Several candidates will try to fill that void.

Middle Distance and Distance – Long the hallmark of Yale’s track and field teams, this group should prove no different this year.Rebecca Dickens, the Heps 800m run-ner-up, has graduated, but senior Van-

essa Mazandi’s 2:09.49 outdoors and2:10.69 indoors put her in the top threeall-time at Yale. Senior Vanessa Ever-

ding has a lifetime best of 2:15.77,and she has been a consistent per-former on Yale’s terrific 4x800m relayteams over the past three years. JuniorKatie Greene ran 2:12.90 indoors lastyear, and junior Rachel Harrington

has a 2:13.93 PR outdoors. FreshmanMeredith Leenhouts was the 2003Massachusetts 800m champion witha PR of 2:13, and freshman Ingrid

Sproll has a best of 2:16.06. Thisshould be a deep group for the Elis. Atthe mile and 1500, Yale is similarlyblessed. Sophomore Ashley Campbell

ran a thrilling 4:29.54 for second at out-door Heps last year, as she missedwinning by a mere hundredth of a sec-ond. Add to them freshman Lindsay

Donaldson, whose 4:46 mile at out-door nationals makes her the fastest in-coming freshman in school history. Inthe longer distances, Yale will be ledby senior cross country captain Anne

Martin, who finished second at Hepsin the 3000m steeplechase. Martin’s10:29.40 earned her third at theECACs, qualified her for the NCAA Regionals, and established a new Yale record for the event. Sophomore Claire Hamilton was also anNCAA Regional qualifier in the steeplechase. Classmate Cara Kiernan was yet another Heps runner-up in the 5000m run. Kiernan’s 16:17.03was the fastest time ever by a Heps freshman and qualified her for the NCAA Championships. Kiernan also ran 9:36.30 for fifth place in theoutdoor ECAC 3000m. Sophomores Katie McKinstry (10:00.65) and Jackie Myers (10:05.03) also had solid first years and will providedepth in that event. McKinstry’s 36:58.49 will be Yale’s primary threat in the 10k.

Throws – Yale’s throwing corps is excited about the prospect of working with 2004 Olympic hammer thrower Anna Mahon. JuniorMargo Angelopoulos has borne the brunt of the throwing duties in the 20-pound weight, hammer, discus and shot put over the past two years.A Heps finalist in the shot in 2002, Angelopoulos should benefit greatly from Mahon’s expertise. Sophomores Sarah Mendillo (javelin) andErica Davis (discus) each placed fourth at Heps in her specialty. Since 1872, when an informal series of student-or-ganized intramural track meets led to the formation of Yale’sfirst track team, the university has established itself as animportant force in American track and field and cross coun-try. One of the founding institutions of the IntercollegiateAssociation of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A), Yalehas seen its track program progress along with the 115-year-old organization, which began as the New World’s first En-glish-speaking athletic association. At the first IC4A meet in 1876, Yale claimed its first in-dividual championship when W.J. Wakeman won the 120-yard high hurdles race in 18.25 seconds. The team trophyarrived in New Haven a year later when Charles Sherrill

led Yale to victory as the winner of the shot put and 100-yard dash. Sherrill, who later became active in the Olympicmovement and served as U.S. Ambassador to France, brokenew ground in track by starting his sprints in a crouch ratherthan in the less explosive standing position common at thetime. Yale and Harvard first met in dual meet competition in 1891, in the midst of a 10-year span which saw one of the two schools win everyIC4A team championship, dominating events from the 100- and 200-yard sprints and mile run to the baseball throw and tug of war. Thebiennial Yale-Harvard and Oxford-Cambridge meet originated three years later, when Yale traveled to England to compete against Oxford.Cambridge came to New York the following year to meet Yale and another tradition was born. The turn of the century brought more innovation from Yale, this time in the pole vault. Arthur C. Gilbert, the father of modern polevaulting, began a string of successful Yale vaulters who, while consistently establishing world records in the event, became the first to clear the12-, 13- and 14-foot marks. Another important advance had to wait until the late 1940s, when the Yale athletics staff, dissatisfied with thetraditional sawdust landing pit, augmented the pit’s cushioning with remnants from an automobile cushion factory in Ansonia, Conn. Outdoor quadrangular meets with Harvard, Dartmouth and Cornell in the early 1930s were restructured to include Penn, Princeton andColumbia in 1935, and the Heptagonals were born. Army and Navy were invited to join during the World War II years, and Brown rounded outa 10-team field. The outdoor Heps have determined the Ivy League championships since the league’s formation in 1956, while the indoor Hepswere initiated in 1948 as a late winter meet. Yale’s first Heptagonal champion was LeRoy Schwarzkopf.

When Bob Giegengack was hired as head coach in 1946, Yale’s greatest years in track and field were just ahead. Giegengack, who servedas an assistant Olympic coach in 1956 and as head coach in 1964 (when the U.S. team won 12 of 24 golds in Tokyo), led the Elis to 11 outdoorand four indoor Heptagonals championships and four IC4A titles during his 29-year tenure. Under his tutelage, Yale track enjoyed a five-yeardual meet win streak. Yale continued to field strong teams through the 1950s, winning both the indoor and outdoor Heps in 1954. In 1959, Yale’s two-mile relayteam of Bill Legat, James Stack, Ed Slowik and Tom Carroll was among the best in the country, and helped Yale to the first of fiveconsecutive outdoor Heptagonals titles. The 1960’s brought more success on the track, as Wendell Mottley set the world record in the indoor 600-yard run with a 1:09.2. Mottley, who set or tied five Yale records, won an Olympic silver medal for his home country, Trinidad. In 1968, Yale captured the outdoor Heptagonalswhen Eli athletes came up with meet records in the final three events for a comeback win; one of the record-breakers was present coach Mark

Young.

Among the Yale track and field corps in the late 1960s and 1970s were NFL standouts Calvin Hill and Kenny Hill, distance runner andtwo-time Olympian Frank Shorter (who won the 1972 Olympic marathon in Munich), and Olympic hurdlers Jay Luck, Kwaku Ohene-

Frempong and Richard MacDonald, the latter two representing Ghana and Canada, respectively. In the fall of 1980 the Yale men’s program went through a new era and rejuvenation of the program that had faltered in the late 1970s. Inthe following 18 years the Yale track and field and cross country teams had many creditable achievements. There have been 114 first-team All-Ivy, 50 second-team All-Ivy, and 94 first-team All-East athletes crowned. Historically, Yale stands in first place in indoor track and third inoutdoor track among Ivy League schools that have claimed individual Heptagonal Champi-onships. By the mid-1980s Yale teams were making their marks nationally, as well as internation-ally. Eugene Profit, later a defensive back for the New England Patriots and WashingtonRedskins, became the Heptagonal outdoor record-holder in the long jump, at the same timegaining All-America status. Larry Miller competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angelesand the 1988 Olympics in Seoul for his native Antiqua and Antilles. During his time at Yale,Miller won three outdoor and one indoor Hep title, while breaking Wendell Mottley’s recordfor the 600 yards. In the late 1980s Jim Driscoll set all hammer and weight throwing recordsand gained All-America status both indoors and outdoors. Driscoll continued as a nationallyranked hammer thrower for the next 12 years. He finished fourth at three straight Olympictrials, just missing the U.S. team each time. In 1987 Chris Athanasia set records in thejavelin that remain unequaled. He won the Heps and IC4As and finished second at the NCAAs,in the process setting meet records that still stand at the Heps and IC4As.

From 1988 to 1992 Yale saw some of its finest hours in middle distance and distancerunning. Jim Gibson became the first Yale athlete to win All-America status in three sea-sons. He was Yale’s first Heptagonal cross country champion since Schwarzkopf in 1942,finishing with record breaking times. He ran the 3000 meters in under eight minutes andthe 3000m steeplechase in 8:40.14. Gibson also holds Yale records in the outdoor 5000mand 10,000m. He concluded his racing career as a finalist at the 1992 Olympic trials. In1989 the quartet of Mike Garrett, Mike Palladino, Bob Lesko and captain Tim Johnson

ran what was at that time an Ivy record-breaking time of 7:22.61 to finish second to atalented Villanova team in the “Championship of America” event at the Penn Relays. Thetalented group of runners from the late-1980s also included Rick Wemple, who not onlyran the 800m in less than 1:50, but also broke school records in the 1500m and the mile. Hetopped his career with an amazing ninth-place finish at the 1991 NCAA Cross CountryChampionships. In the early 1990s Matt Levine changed the record books with his performances in thehigh hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles. Over four years Levine earned more points—in both individual and team competition—than any other athlete in the team’s history. Heearned All-East honors six times and All-Ivy honors nine times. From 1993 to 1997 Jesse

Stern rewrote the Yale records in the pole vault, finally ending his career with a record17’4.75” at the Maccabiah Games. Of the three athletes from District 1 who qualified forthe NCAA Cross Country Championships in 1996, two were from Yale. Patrick McMur-

ray and Chris Gansen competed at the championships in Arizona. In 1994, Peter Coghlan, a native of Dublin, Ireland, began his career at Yale. His accomplishments include holding the Ivy League recordsin the 55m and 110m hurdles, as well as the Yale records in those events. He won six consecutive (three indoor, three outdoor) Heptagonaltitles and two IC4A championships in the hurdles. At home Coghlan is a six-time Irish national champion. He competed for Ireland at the 2000Olympic Games in Sydney, Austrailia, three World Championships and was a finalist at the European Championships at 60m Hurdles. Thomas Hocker won two consecutive Heptagonal intermediate hurdle titles in 2000 and 2001 and was a member of the four Heptagonal4x400m relay championship teams as well as the indoor school record holding team in that event. In 2002 he was selected as the winner of theWilliam Neely Mallory Award, presented to the top male athlete in any varsity sport at Yale. He was a two-time academic All-American andwon the prestigious Churchill Scholarship for graduate study at Cambridge University in England.

Yale’s first women’s teams appeared in 1977 and enjoyed modest team success while providing several standout individuals. Notable amongthe pioneers were Pat Miller (long jump), Pat Melton (sprints), Debbie Ulian (distance), Sally Strauss (distance) and Lorraine Murphy

(javelin). Current coach Mark Young (’68) became the first head coach of the women’s team in 1980 and individual and team successes were notfar behind. Under Young, the women’s cross country program spent the late 1980s in the national top 20. The Eli women won four straight Heps Champi-onships from 1986-1989 and three straight ECAC Championships from 1986-1988. In addition, Young’s teams qualified for five straight NCAAChampionships (1986-1990). Individual honors came along with team successes, and members of Yale’s women’s cross country teams won nineAll-America certificates. Margaret Wynne, Gillian Morton, Kelly Groteke, Sarah P. Smith and Rebecca Rivkin are all in that group. Groteke(1986) and Smith (1988) were also Heptagonal Cross Country Champions. Ariana Kelly and Kate O’Neill joined that elite group by winningHeps cross country championships in 1998 (Kelly), 2001 and 2002 (O’Neill). There have been several outstanding individuals in women’s track and field as well. Pat Melton propelled the Yale women to nationalprominence by winning a silver in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1982 AIAW (now NCAA) Championships. Wynne matched Melton byfinishing second in the 1982 AIAW meet in the 3000 giving Yale its best ever finish at the National meet. At the indoor Heps that year, Meltonwas honored as the Most Outstanding Performer for setting meet records in the 55m and 200m dashes. In 1987, Groteke became the secondYale runner to earn the honor after winning the 3,000 and 5,000. Louisa Gerritz also had an outstanding career at Yale. She won Heptagonaltitles at 1500m, 800m (indoors and out) and 400m hurdles. She also anchored Yale’s record-break-ing 4x400 and 4x800 relays, both indoors and outdoors. In the field events, high jumper Jane Buchan was an eight-time All-Ivy pick in the mid-80s andstill holds all the school records in that event. Marcie Sidman was the Heps champion in the ham-mer for three straight years (1986 to 1988), while Ann Morris set school records in the discus andshot put. Samantha Lincoln won the pentathlon in the 1991 and 1992 Indoor Heps, while alsocapturing the long jump title with a league meet record of 20’5”. Michelle Stroube was the 1993Heptagonal hammer champion and ECAC runner-up with a toss of 166’2". The late 90s and the turnof the millennium brought a resurgence for both the cross country and track and field programs. Ledby twins Kate and Laura O’Neill, Yale finished seventh at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Champi-onships after winning the Heps. Another Heps Championship and a 13th-place finish followed in2001. Kate O’Neill earned individual Heps crowns in 2001 and 2002, and Laura placed second andthird respectively those years. Kate placed 11th at Nationals and Laura was 26th when they werejuniors. As seniors, Kate was a phenomenal runner-up at Nationals (the best finish ever by an IvyLeaguer) and Laura was 13th. On the field there was more success. Jennifer Newsom won the first of two Heps long jumptitles as a freshman in 1998 and enjoyed a spectacular career in which she scored over 90 points inthe Heps over her four years. She concluded by breaking the Yale record for 200 meters in her lastevent in a Yale uniform. She established the Yale standard for 55 meters earlier in her illustrious Pat Melton

career. Diane Potkay had a similarly spectacular career as Yale’s best thrower ever. Winning her first Heps titleas a freshman in the discus and culminating with a school record Hep-winning throw in the hammer as a seniorin 2000. Potkay was consistently the most versatile thrower in the Ivy League, scoring at Heps in the shot, discus, 20-pound weight throw and hammer throughout her career. Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu excelled in bothhorizontal jumps during her career, winning the Hep title indoors as a senior and establishing Yale records in thetriple jump, indoors and out, as well as the indoor long jump. Also a Hep scorer in the 60 meter dash, Tuakli-Wosornu and Newsom combined to be Yale’s best ever sprint/jump duo. Sikira Backus ’02 became Yale’s bestever short sprinter establishing Yale records at 60 meters, 100 meters, and 200 meters before Newsom estab-lished a new standard. Backus teamed with Newsom and Tuakli-Wosornu to establish the current Yale standardin the 4x100. Her consistently brilliant anchor legs kept Yale in the top three Heps relay teams throughout hercareer. Led by the monumental efforts of Backus, Newsom, Tuakli-Wosornu and team captain and Heps 1500mchampion Emily Estey, the 2001 squad narrowly missed winning the Outdoor Heps with a Yale-best 127 points, losing to Brown by a mere five points. As successful on the track as in crosscountry, Kate and Laura O’Neill rewrotethe record books. They became the only

female runners in Ivy League history to run under 16 minutes in the 5000meters as well as the only ones to go below 33 minutes in the 10,000. Asseniors they were together named the Most Outstanding Performer at theoutdoor Heps. Between them, they finished first and second in the 3000,

5000 and 10,000 – finishing within a second of each other in all three

events. Kate became the first woman to win the 5000 three straight times, and Laura was the first do so in the 10,000. When they were seniors,Kate had a runner-up finish at indoor Nationals and Laura was fifth. Theduo ended their collegiate careers by placing second and fourth in theoutdoor 10,000. Their 5000m times and 10,000m times remain the twofastest in the Ivy League. By the time they graduated, they had racked up13 All American certificates in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. Both were named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America women’scross country/track & field first team. Kate O’Neill was also selected asthe Connecticut winner of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. After graduation, Kate competed in the 10,000-meter run in the 2004Olympics, adding another chapter to the rich history of track and field atYale.

Coxe CageCoxe Cage is the home of the Yale men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams. The renovations that took place in

the early 1980s, including a state of the art En-tout-cas running surface, the installation of permanent bleachers and a state of theart track and field scoreboard, marked its transition from a multipurpose practice area to a preeminent track and field venue.

In the fall of 2004 a brand new 200m Banked “Mondo” oval and infield will be installed in the “Cage,” making it one of thepremier track and field venues in the nation. The layout and construction of the new track will closely mirror that of the 168th StreetArmory in New York City and will allow the Elis to practice and compete in an exciting, first-rate facility.

When the “Field Gymnasium,” as it was first called after its construction in 1928, was first opened, it was conceived asa practice area for baseball, football, track and field and tennis. It was in 1941 that the first actual track and field meet was heldthere, when as “an experiment,” Yale met Harvard on February 15. One week later the Bulldogs met Princeton. The experimentproved successful, and Yale’s indoor track and field schedule was born.

The Cage was named for Charles Edmund Coxe ’93, a hammer thrower on Yale’s squad. Legend has it that Coxe, who wascharged with raising funds for the new facility, couldn’t be bothered with such efforts and instead offered the necessary $300,000to build the facility on the stipulation that it be named for him. Yale accepted the offer and began construction on what was thenconsidered to be one of the largest structures of its kind in the world. Measuring over 356 feet long and 156 feet across, with aceiling reaching almost 83’, the building encompasses over 3.3 million cubic feet of air space. To this day its 26,000-square-footskylight is among the largest anywhere.

At the time of the Cage’s construction, its track was destined to become one of the fastest in the East. At the openingceremony for the new facility, Yale’s half-mile relay ran an exhibition in a time of 1:32.4 better than any previous indoor mark.

Once indoor track competitions were initiated in the 1940s, the Cage became the domain of the Yale indoor track and fieldteam. The only place the Elis had to travel was to Ithaca for their dual meet with Cornell and the Indoor Heptagonal Champion-ships.

In 1982 Coxe Cage underwent a major renovation. The old cinder track and dirt floor was removed in favor of a state ofthe art, “tuned,” En-tout-cas oval and infield. The track was mounted on a structure designed to absorb the pressure from therunner’s legs. It was designed to allow the runner to train more consistently without suffering the strain and injury incurred onother surfaces. At the time of its installation it was thought to be the most advanced track of its kind.

Coxe Cage and the William Clay Ford Indoor Track have played host to many major championship meets, including eightECAC championships and three national scholastic championships.

Dewitt Cuyler Field/Dwyer TrackThe home of Yale track and field since its inception as a sport in the 1870s, Dewitt Cuyler Field and the Dwyer Track are

among the premier track and field facilities in the nation. The eight-lane En-tout-cas surface was laid in 1984, replacing alegendary cinder oval, the likes of which had rarely been seen. The old track had two 200m meter straightaways, enablingrunners to race a one-turn 400m dash and a straight 200m dash. The new layout was resurfaced in the fall of 2004.

The creative layout of the facility allows for competition in all events, including the hammer, discus and javelin, withinthe complex. Sprint straightaways are marked to allow for competition in both directions depending on the prevailing winds, andmulti-directional runways in the long and triple jumps and the pole vault allow for optimal performance. A huge high jump apronabuts a 60-yard artificial turf field and makes for a great jumping area. Three shot-put circles, two hammer/discus cages and an all-weather javelin runway make the facility a thrower’s dream.

Bleachers on the sprint straightaway seat 1500, making the complex a tremendous host site for championship meets.Dewitt Cuyler and Yale have served as hosts for three IC4A championships (most recently in the spring of 2004) and fourHeptagonal Championships (most recently in 2003). In the summer of 1995, 5000 athletes from around the world competed in theSpecial Olympics World Games at the facility.

Yale Golf Course/Maltby Lakes Recreational AreaIn 1924, a 700-acre tract of swamp and woodland was given to Yale by Mrs. Ray Tompkins in memory of her husband.

Under the supervision of Charles Blair Macdonald, the renowned golf course architect, champion golfer and co-founder of theUSGA, plans were made for an 18-hole golf course. With a budget of $400,000, Macdonald, in collaboration with Seth Raynor andCharles Banks, designed a masterpiece.

Today, the Yale Golf Course is recognized as one of the finest examples of early American golf course design. Largedeeply bunkered greens and narrow rolling fairways are the core of Yale’s penalizing character.

In addition to being the home of Yale’s nationally ranked golf teams, “The Course at Yale” serves as the home competi-tion course and practice venue for Yale cross country. The course provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle ofdowntown New Haven and gives Yale distance and middle distance runners an incredibly scenic, bucolic and challenging placeto train and compete. In addition to being able to run on the course itself, Yale athletes are afforded the opportunity to train onnumerous dirt trails and woodlands that surround the golf course.

Abutting the Yale Golf Course is the Maltby Lakes Recreation Area, supervised by the New Haven Regional WaterAuthority. Maltby offers 8-10 miles of runnable soft surface trails for Yale track and field and cross country athletes. Althoughonly a short run from Yale’s Smilow Center, the Maltby Lakes trails offer a serene alternative to the nearby busy downtown areaof New Haven and are big enough to offer a variety of different runs.

Athletics Mission

Yale University offers its students a liberal education, onewhich has as its focus on the intellectual and moral develop-ment of the individual, and which gives students a founda-tion for learning throughout their lives. Yale has long recog-nized that such an education is not fostered by its academiccomponent alone. Part of it is constituted by those challeng-ing and pleasurable experiences and extracurricular activi-ties—like varsity and recreational athletics—that augment andenrich academic training. In athletics, as everywhere else in the University, Yale isstrongly committed to equal opportunity, and affirmativelyseeks to attract exceptionally qualified students, coaches andstaff of diverse backgrounds to its ranks. As a part of its great athletic tradition, the University spon-sors 35 varsity teams, with broad opportunities for participa-tion by men and women, in which athletes of proven abilityhave the opportunity to test their skill and valor in intercolle-giate competition. Through its commitment to competitive ath-letics, Yale demonstrates its belief that the lessons such en-gagement teaches are many and enduring. Among these arelearning how to strive to win, to compete with pride and honor,to make sacrifices, to persevere when all seems lost, and todevelop a sense of obligation and responsibility to others. These lessons make athletics a school for accomplishmentand character, and for the athlete they represent an invalu-able part of the non-academic aspects of a liberal education. Because Yale views athletics as a component of liberaleducation, complimentary to its central academic mission butnot superior to it, the University requires that aspiration andachievement in competitive athletic endeavor play a propor-tioned role within any student’s school life. The University

also subscribes to the Ivy agreement, the principles of whichdelimit the role competitive athletic endeavor plays in the lifeof the University or of any individual student within it. Theseprinciples include the belief that student athletes should begenerally representative of their class and admitted on thebasis of academic promise and personal qualities as well asathletic abilities; that financial aid to student athletes beawarded in the same way it is awarded to other students, that is solely on the basis of financial need; that student ath-letes be held accountable to the same academic standardsas other students; and that athletes make normal academicprogress toward their degrees. In addition to its sponsorship of competitive sports, Yalesupports a wide range of extracurricular programs, includingthosethat present significant opportunities for recreational andinstructional participation. The University provides supervi-sion for over thirty club sports, and has developed a largeintramural program, which presents undergraduates, gradu-ate students, and faculty fellows with the opportunity to par-ticipate in competitive sports throughout the calendar year.Yale considers the opportunities it offers in these areas to bean important contribution to the well-being of members of itscommunity and is as dedicated to these extracurricular ac-tivities as to the continued strength of its competitive pro-grams. In all aspects of sport and recreation, the Universityrecognizes that shared experience can help create a strongbond among members of the University community, and be-tween the University community and the wider world, and itis committed to fostering the spirit of pride and fellowshipthat athletic endeavor can inspire.

The 2004-05 cross country/track& field guide was written by the Yale Sports Publicity Department.

The following photographers contributed to the guide: Yale University Audio-Visual Services, Sabby Frinzi, Don Clark, Steve Conn and Sam Rubin.

In accordance with federal law, the University prepares an annual report on participation rates, financial support and other information regarding men's and women's intercollegiate athletic programs. Upon request to

the Director of Athletics, P.O. Box 208216, New Haven, CT 06520, (203) 432-1414, the University will provide its annual report to any student or prospective student.
