No more gang violence in Freeport?Residents hope so. That's why they'veagreed to lend their support, time andexpertise to a new group in Freeport thathopes to preserve a quality of life for allresidents by preventing the growth andreversing the negative influence of gangand youth violence in the community.

The group is called HEVN - HelpingEnd Violence Now - and they held theirsecond meeting in Freeport on Tuesday,July 21, arthe Refuge Apostolic Church. The first meeting was held on June 29 atthe same church. HEVN's ExecutiveDirector, J. Raymond Mackey, Sr., toldthe 30 or so people who attended thismeeting that "there are no quick fixes tothe problems facing our communities."

Bishop Mackey opened the meetingwith a prayer. He cautioned residents bysaying that gang "activities are escalat-ing. There was a shooting in Uniondalelast week and another this morning inHempstead." Nassau County DetectiveDavis, a member of the Federal GangTask Force and HEVN member, con-firmed Bishop Mackey's statement, adding that "we don't know yet it if this

morning's shooting was gang related, buta young man, in his late teens or earlytwenties was shot. He's alive."

Bishop Mackey gave a brief history ofhis involvement in the problem of youthand gang violence, beginning back in1996 "when we began to notice a rise ingang and youth violence." He told resi-dents about the first HEVN meeting in2001 and how the program is modeledafter the Boston 10 Point Coalition. "Thatwas a community with a big problem;85% of the youth were involved in gangactivity and now it has dropped to 2%.We invited them to speak with us inRoosevelt. We heard how they united thecommunity. 67 churches and communityand government organizations cametogether to tackle the problem and itworked. They came and spoke with usand we developed it to work here onLong Island. Now we are here inFreeport, to develop a community clus-ter," he said.

Bishop Mackey said that each clusteror group is unique because each commu-nity has its own needs and problems toaddress. He stressed the importance ofincluding all the different groups in thecommunity - churches, schools, commu-nity organizations, government, law

enforcement - all working together. "Wecannot look at one organization to solveour problems. It is a problem for thewhole community. We must go back tothe core, to our families. We are going toneed more than a band-aid."

Members from HEVN's Rooseveltcluster were in attendance to lend supportto Freeport residents. HEVN hopes tocreate other clusters this year includingones in Hempstead, Uniondale andWestbury.

"In Roosevelt we identified 22 prob-lems," said Bishop Mackey. "Here inFreeport you must identify your prob-lems, and then decide how to addressthem. You must look at the resourcesavailable and the missing links. It is veryimportant that you deal with the commu-nity in a wholistic manner."

Bernard Smith, President of theNortheast Civic Association, told resi-dents that there are "already 22 organiza-tions in Freeport that deal with the gangand youth problem."

Ted Levy of Freeport Pride spokeabout two of the programs under hisdirection. "We have an alternative sus-pension program for at risk youth," saidMr. Levy. "These kids come to ouragency and we expose them to different

things and hopefully show them how tolook at situations differently. Sometimeswe take trips to prisons or have them talkto former gang members. We exposethem to the idea of college and to positiverole modeling. We also do an assessmentto see if they are in need of counseling."

Mr. Levy also spoke about the morethan 150 students at Freeport HighSchool who are involved in an anti-drug,anti-violence program. "These kids learnabout violent issues and conflict resolu-tion. Then our kids tell others why theyare not involved in gangs. It works," saidMr. Levy.

"My understanding is that one organi-zation won't come up with a solution. Ithink you're telling me that each organi-zation must address a different part of theproblem. Is that correct?" asked residentJanet Buckner.

Bishop Mackey shook his head. "Yes."A young man named Alex James,

who is a minister in training, told resi-dents how he adopted a gang member"as a brother. I go to his house and Isee that there is no father. It's in thehouse, this virus. He's looking for love.We see 'colors' ; we iden t i fy him

It's capital projects at Freeport board...by Mark Treske

Whether or not a 7:30 a.m. special meet-ing was, as Superintendent Dr. EricEversley put it, "a great way to start theday" the Freeport Board of Education(minus absent Sunday Coward) assembledearly on July 22 and, after a brief executivesession, made two administrative appoint-ments and dealt with four other actionitems involving capital projects.

The board approved the probationaryappointment of Phonzetta Ladson as assis-tant principal at John W. Dodd MiddleSchool, effective July 22. Dr. Eversleydescribed Ms. Ladson at a veteran of the'Freeport Schools, one who has "providedgreat leadership in the district," in particu-

lar in her current position as Dean ofStudents at Dodd. It was noted that the dis-trict will be advertising to fill the vacantdean's position.

The board approved the probationaryappointment of Ayesha McArthur as thenew assistant principal at Caroline G.Atkinson School, effective August 2. Ms.McArthur comes to Freeport from theUniondale Schools, where she mostrecently was an administrative assistantfor middle education, heavily involved incurriculum and assessments. She previ-ously taught fourth and fifth grade as wellas language arts at Uniondale. Dr.Everlsley concluded his remarks by con-gratulating both appointees on their newpositions.

James Caracciolo Jr., who attended themeeting with his mother and father andsiblings, added that "there isn't a bowlingalley or movie theater in-Freeport, noplace for kids to go to. If you don't haveparents to take you places then you don'thave anything to do."

In closing, Bishop Mackey told resi-dents that HEVN is looking to raise thereward offered for the shooting death ofDianna Correa. "We are raising thatamount by $20,000. In Lynbrook thecommunity raised $25,000 for the cap-ture of those criminals. We can do it too."

Bernie Smith, Minister McKoy, CrisLopez, Rita Carter, Chris and DawnEdmond, James Caracciolo and GLOW

Civic Association, Max Rodriguez andTed Levy all presented checks to HEVNon behalf of Dianna Correa. BishopMackey in turn gave the money to thelegislative aide who represented NassauCounty Legislator-Kevan Abrahams atthe meeting.

Resident Dewey Small urged people tobecome more active and join the neigh-borhood watch which is now forming."We know there are problems here," saidresident Dewey Smalls. "We have lots oforganizations to help but we must all par-ticipate. Too many individuals are fallingthrough the cracks. Teach, mentor, coun-sel. We're the adults and we need to helpthe children, to listen to you. and we needto hold government accountable."

Editor's note: The Freeport - HEVNcluster has not set another meeting datefor this summer as of press time. TheLeader will inform readers of the meet-ing when it becomes public.

Assistant Superintendent for BusinessKishore Kuncham spoke.on the capitalproject items. He explained that capitalimprovement projects must be classified asType n actions under the New York StateEnvironmental Quality Review Act(SEQRA) - meaning that the projectwould have no significant adverse impacton the environment and that no furtherenvironmental review was required. Thislegal requirement was fulfilled by the StateEducation Department before 2001, andnow must be done by the district itsself.

The classification was approved by theboard for four projects:• Replacement of the Bayview AvenueSchool playground (see last week's Leaderfor a report on the playground fire.)• Window and window screen replacementat Leo F. The community newspaper - the glue thathelps hold a community together,

and the spur that helps keep it moving forward.

You can do thisMemorials to victims of the September 11, 2001,

attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Centerhave sprung up all over this country and evenabroad. They range from roadside ribbons to theworld-class design for the site of the World TradeCenter tragedy. So many artistic creations havebeen inspired by this one event.

Last .weekend, one of the most moving tributeswas unveiled on Sunrise Highway at the MerrickRailroad Station. Thousands of motorists will seethe statue of one firefighter overcome with griefbeing consoled by another (which also honors allfirefighters who have given their lives to fire serv-ice, volunteer or paid). It reminds us of a poem onanother memorial in Port Jefferson that ends inmid-sentence as emergency response teams assurethe victims they are com(ing).

Those who were running in to help thatSeptember morning, as others fled for their lives, have helped define what it is to be an American.

America pulled together, with many travelingfrom far away to help almost as soon as they gotword of the disaster.

Only a year after the attack, families of the vic-tims began to push for honoring their loved ones'memory through service, because in that way theylive on.

Future observances of the anniversary of 9/11 willconcentrate more and more on honoring that spiritof service.

Last week, Congressman Peter King (R-Seaford)and Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) introduced res-olutions in Congress asking President George W. Bushto declare September 11 a national day of service.

One Days Pay, an organization started by sur-vivors and the families of victims, hopes to sign upmillions of volunteers making a difference by help-ing established causes such as the American RedCross or Habitat for Humanity or by inventing theirown. To learn more, visit onedayspay.org.

Locally, there are so many families of victims andsurvivors. Often thay have been the first to step for-ward in service. How can we not join them?

EAGLE SCOUT: On Tuesday, June 29, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi held a press confer-ence to meet with and honor members of the Nassau County Council of Girls Scouts who havereceived the Gold Award, and members of the Nassau County Council of Boy Scouts who haveachieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Among the honorees was Daniel Hassett of Freeport,,.,right, who achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scoutt "It gives me great pleasure to see the youngpeople of Nassau County taking part ip qrganizatjohs^that serve the community, such as the Boyand Girl Scout's," said Mr. Suozzi.

PERSONALITIES AND PRECE-DENTS .:. As our country enters into theperiod of national political conventionsand serious campaigning, it is interest-ing to ponder how much any of us real-ly knows about American history?

At a social studies cyclical curriculumreview, presented recently at a BaldwinBoard of Education meeting, a commit-tee member presented a rather disquiet-ing piece of information. He noted thatseveral middle school students did notknow who Paul Revere was and onechild did not recognize the name ofGeorge Washington.

Those of us who are older rememberthat history was taught chronologically.Of course, years ago, whole continentsweren't included-and time usually ranout somewhere around the teaching ofthe Civil War. The next hundred yearsthen had to be squeezed into the veryfew weeks prior to final exams.

At sorne point, the organization ofcurriculum took a different approachand history was studied thematically inan attempt to help students understandbroader ideas. Unfortunately, when stu-dents do not read anything other thantextbooks, and perhaps a few originaldocuments, their factual knowledge still

The Baldwin Summer Program, heldat Baldwin Park, has offered local chil-dren an enjoyable Summer experiencefor 20 years. The. camp, which is pri-vately run by a.board of directors, isheld from July 7 to August 20. The pro-gram is Monday through Friday from9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Currently 600 children attend thecamp and 178 high school and collegestudents work there. Additionally thereare seven certified teachers on the staff. The majority of the children and staffare from Baldwin.. The camp has a 1:3ratio of counselors :to campers.

The program is "just as much for thecounselors, to keep them off the streetsin a nice, safe, drug-free environment, asit is for the campers," according to pro-gram director Rob Oliveri.

The program is partially funded by theBaldwin School District, which coverssome insurance and busing costs. Onrainy days the children use the MeadowElementary School and the middleschool.

Following its mojlo, "Let's get back tobasics - Kids," the camp is focused onoffering activities that allow children todevelop skills and have fun. There arenumerous activities to entertain the

remains severely limited.Another problem with truly under-

standing history is that the past is oftensanitized. It is said that history is writtenby the victors. Because of that, as weview American history with the assur-ances of hindsight, (we already knowhow it turned out), we sometimesbelieve that the successful conclusion ofevents like the American Revolutionwas foreordained. That was hardly thecase.

During recent years several extremelysuccessful best sellers have been pub-lished that deal with our country's earlyhistory. "Founding Brothers" by JosephEllis, "John Adams" by DavidMcCullough, "The Americanization ofBenjamin Franklin" by Gordon S. Woodand most recently "AlexanderHamilton" by Ron Chernow all showclearly that the United States, as a coun-try, almost didn't come to be.

We see that the creation of theDeclaration of Independence and theConstitution was a direct result of theintense beliefs of the founding fathers. But many of those same fiery personali-ties also played a large role in almostsinking our fledgling nation.

The authors of many of these books

present George Washington as the linch-pin, the essential reason for me successof the new nation. He was not the mostsuccessful general in winning battles: hewas not the most profound thinker, notthe greatest orator nor the greatest writer.

However, he alone seemed able tomediate between hostile and oftenvicious rival factions. These were diretimes when emotions ran extremelyhigh, first because all of the playersunderstood that they were setting impor-tant precedents but just as importantlybecause there was a lot of ego and per-sonal glory at stake.

Those of us who think that our countrydeveloped in one fell swoop, with all ofthe minutiae of government clear from theget-go are sadly mistaken. How ironic thattoday our political leaders, and most espe-cially the justices of the Supreme Courtwhose role was originally the least definedof the three branches of government, speak of the intent of the founding lathers.

In reality there was very little unifor-mity of intent beyond an evolving desireto be free from the oppression ofEngland. And after the war, even thatbasic issue was debated as the 13 statesargued about what the concept of"nation" really meant. We are still debat-

Baldwin Summer Programcampers. Sports are extremely popular.Children in kindergarten through thirdgrade indulge in arts and crafts projectstwice a week.

Grades four through eight can enjoy aDay Trip Program, although additional'fees are incurred. Campers spend days atHot Skates, the Newbridge Pool, themovies, Adventureland and the Cradleof Aviation Museum.

Special activities days add excitementto daily camp life. Almost every day hasa special theme or event planned.Campers enjoy talent day, crazy hat dayand spirit week.

In addition to the Summer program, special two-week sessions which beginat the end of the camp day are heldfrom I to 2:30-p.m. The SportsAcademy is available for children insecond through eighth grades.Instruction in baseball, tennis, lacrosseand soccer is offered. About 125 chil-dren take advantage of these opportuni-ties. Story Time Crafts is offered forchildren in kindergarten through sec-ond grade, and about 70 children par-ticipate in this program.

The Baldwin Summer Program has chil-dren and staff members coming back yearafter year. Counselors "love working withthe children" and find the staff to be"delightful people."

Children enjoy themselves for 6.5weeks, and parents only pay $275 forregular registration and $250 for theearly bird special. This cost is consid-ered less than that of hiring a babysitterfor the Summer.

The camp, which began asa small grassroots program, has grown and developedover the years. It is "morefinancially sound," and RobOliveri considers it "biggerand better than ever."

August 20 will be the"Grand Finale Day" of thecamp's 20th Anniversary cele-bration. Parents and local dig-nitaries will have the opportu-nity to see the children in ashow, which will display theirvarious talents.

ing the authority of the federal govern-ment versus that of (he slates, mostrecently in discussions regarding thedefinition of marriage.

In some ways, as we watch the parti-sanship manifested in today's campaignsby the candidates..but more frequentlyby their supporters, we can take conso-lation in the fact that such animosity andsuch tactics are not new.

However, in our tendency to see thepast through rose-colored glasses, weshould not make the mistake of thinkingthat our nation's success, indeed even itsfuture existence, is something that canbe taken for granted.

There is a limit to how much divisive-ness a country can withstand. There is alimit to how long the business of gov-ernment can be delayed by partisan dis-tractions. There is a limit to how-muchhostility a society can absorb before itsvery fabric is irrevocably fragmented.

Among all the founding fathers,Washington alone, by sheer force of willand great personal discipline, seemed tobe able to put personal glory aside andact as a moderating influence. „

Maintaining principle, he tried to findagreement amid discord and consensusamid differences. That is a leader.

Freeporter sails across the AtlanticThe Polish sailing vessel, the 52'

Antica was at the Esplanade onFreeport's Nautical Mile recently." Manypeople visited it to see what a ship waslike that had made two voyages aroundthe world and was now completing itsthird expedition. The captain, a native ofGdansk, Poland, bought the boat as aused fishing vessel, worked on.it for 10years to make it a seaworthy sailboatand used it as an ambassador for the cityof Gdansk, Poland, during his travels.

A Freeporter, Rudi Harbaiier, had theopportunity to sail aboard th$ Anticafrom Annapolis, Maryland to Freeportand then decided to join Captain Jerzyas navigator, sailing from Freeport2,200 miles across the Atlantic to theAzores, off the coast of Portugal.,

"Being an active sailor, it was a life-long dream come true for me - a realphysical and mental challenge. The triptook 30 days and was an experience cap-tain, we were a crew of three. Therewere days of calm, beautiful sunrisesand sunsets. Then there was the experi-ence of two gales and three storms withwaves-as high as 30 feet. .Waves wouldsoak us while at the helm during our 4hour watches. The water in the' GulfStream was very warm, 77 degrees, butthe cold wind from the north had usdressing in warm sweaters and foulweather gear. Safety harnesses had to beworn. It was a pleasure to sail with suchan experienced captain who was able tocope with every .situation from boatrepair to cooking delicious meals. Ofcourse Kielbasa (Polish sausage) was

always plentiful: I learned a lot aboutthe Gulf Stream, it's currents, eddies andstrength, weather, sail setting, even nav-igating by the stars. The one thing I did-n't learn was Polish. Besides spotting afew ships, we had dolphins visitingevery day wanting to play, as well as ashark, whale, turtles, and terns (in themiddle of the ocean).

We came to our destination, the har-bor at Horta on the beautiful tropicalisland of Faial in the Azores. Theseislands are of volcanic origin and about550 miles off the coast of Portugal. Itwas very exciting arriving there and see-ing green meadows, mountains, and somany blue hydrangeas causing Faial. tobe called the Blue Island. After enjoyingand exploring this wonderful place, Iwaved goodbye to the ship and my crewmates and they continued on to Englandand finally back to Poland, completingCaptain Jerzy's third expedition whichstarted in 2003."

Rudi is seen often out on the Freeportwaters on his 26-foot sailboat"Bohemia". He is now preparing for his28th annual Around LI Regatta startingJuly 29, off Brooklyn, roundingMontauk Point and ending in Sea Cliff.Last year Bohemia won a first place inits division in the ALTR -and was thesmallest boat to finish. Then in a totally

. different direction, he was able to signon as crew aboard the 180-foot tall shipreplica of the Bounty last Fall on theirtrip from Greenport to Annapolis. TheBounty had been docked in Freeport lastNovember.

Enjoy Freeport's Nautical Mile!

Freeport Board of Trustees meetby Linda Delmonico Prussen

The Freeport Board of Trustees quick-ly approved a number of motions at ameeting on Monday, July 26, attendedby about 25 residents. A public hearingwas set for August 16 at 8 p.m. regard-ing the local law enforcement blockgrants program to discuss the grantawarded to the Freeport Police in theamount of $16,388.

Police Chief Michael Woodward wason hand to discuss this grant. Heexplained, "The grant is actually a 70percent reduction in what we've beenreceiving in previous years." Whenasked by a resident why the reduction,Chief Woodward said that PresidentBush re-allocated some of the moniesnormally in the grant to HomelandSecurities. Chief Woodward said themonies would be applied to police over-time and drug and gang initiatives.

Mayor Glacken . assured the publicthat this is not Comfnunity Developmentor "CD" monies. Mayor Glacken wenton to say this is a federal grant set asideto be spent on the local level for thepolice. Unlike other grant monies,Mayor Glacken said in order to accessthese funds a public" hearing must takeplace. •

A resident expressed his appreciationthat a Freeport business, Sentry ElectricCorp., was awarded the contract for"Furnishing of Antique Street Lights."He said, "It's gratifying to see a localfirm in Freeport won the bid. I'd like tosee more of this." He inquired if itwould be possible to offer local firms a5 percent discount in their bids as themoney earned by local businesses flowsback into the community in the form oftaxes and employment. Mayor Glackensaid he would look into the legality ofsuch a measure.

And in testament to the summer sea-son the three motions were approved for

block parties and a fourth motion wasapproved to hold the annual Ex-CaptainRichard T. Muldowney, Jr. MemorialOld-Fashioned Tournament on

t fVN in toeSummertime

By Deborah A. CohenIt doesn't get much better than Long

Island in the summertime! From our fabulous beaches and parks

to our local pools and museums... there are somany ways to enjoy some good old-fashionedfamily fun.

Why not host a pool party?! No pool? You can find great sales on kiddie-pools orsprinklers this time of year at your local toystore. Set up the backyard like a mini waterpark complete with lounge chairs and towels.

You could even barbecue some burg-ers and dogs.

Want to enjoy a more "low mainte-nance" day in the sun? Plan a play dateat one of our many local pools. Wantagh Parkhas something for everyone: A wonderful poolfor toddlers, a crazy sprinkler area for kids ofall ages and a giant slide for older kids andadults alike.

Pack-up the kids, a picnic lunch, thesand toys and a boogie board and head for oneof our many beautiful beaches. It's one of the

most unique experiences of our area. The kidswill enjoy making sand castles and jumping thewaves and you'll be able to relax in the greatoutdoors.

The park is another easy way to enjoya Summer day, especially with an infant oryoung toddler. Most parks have baby swingsand a clean safe area for your little one to totaround. It's also a great way to meet otheryoung moms and dads in the neighborhood.

Take the kids to the Cradle of AviationMuseum for an out-of-this-world. afternoon. The kids will be having so much fun they won'trealize they are learning, too! It's a nice way tokeep cool in the heat.

Finally, the Long Island Children'sMuseum is a great way to spend the day. There is a tot room where your toddler willenjoy exploring the high seas to the blue skies.Your family will have fun building a giantfortress out of wooden blocks, or expressingthemselves while broadcasting the news andweather. And there is bubble magic for every-one.

Have a wonderful Summer and keep cool!

Top-Rated AuthenticSouthwestern Barbecue

Restaurant Review by Carolee Fox

You'll be leaving Long Island behind as soon you've entered the swinging por-tals of R.S. Jones. This place is more Texan than Texas.

A cacophony of Southwestern memorabilia, much of which has been lovinglydonated by their loyal, fun lovin' customers, festoons the rustic walls of this cozy, relaxed, down-home establishment. But don't let the informal country westernambiance fool you. The award'winning food is serious business!

Chef-Owner Carole Olkoski and her partner Margaret Mueller are local gals whobring their love of everything country and western to their Merrick location. Forthe past 11 years each has brought her own skill and expertise to this very uniqueand successful restaurant.

I couldn't resist a Chocolate Martini from an interesting bar list, while waitingfor dinner to be served. This lovely concoction was primarily made with vodkaand a hint of chocolate, served in a cocoa rimmed glass, and finished with a choco-late Kiss.

Although the menu offers the restaurant's basic fare, the daily specials arenumerous and each day of the week features dishes both new and expected.

Beef Chili is a great way to start your meal. Chunks of slow-cooked beef servedin a crock with beans, herbs and spices, add up to wonderful hearty flavors in adelicious thick blend with just the right amount of heat. A delicious vegetarian ver-sion is also offered.

Another winning appetizer is Chef Carole's version of Picadillo. A little sweetand a little heat give this unique blend of fresh ground beef and pork, sauteed withonions, tomatoes, and slivered almonds, its distinctive taste. This dish is served-up with a pile of their own tortilla chips.

Mesa Pie, a vegetarian style Southwestern lasagna, exemplifies the talent andcreativity of the chef. Thinly sliced assorted vegetables, tomatoes, black beans, and Monterey Jack cheese are layered with tortillas and a medley of spices, andbaked to perfection.

Authentic Barbecued Ribs are cooked "low and slow." It's real hickory woodand their own special sauce that bring out the fabulous deep lingering flavors tothis "fall off the bone" dish.

Iron Horse Salmon selected from the Specials' Menu arrived beautifully grilledin its orange, sesame, garlic glaze. Fish fans will almost always find pan-friedtrout or catfish available for grilling or blackening.

Loyal customers rave about the Dixie Chicken. If tastes like fried, but youwon't believe it's dipped in a special honey mix, rolled in cornbread and thenbaked. Add a side of sweet potato pancakes, smashed potatoes, or biscuits andcream gravy and you're half way to culinary heaven.

Salads are both delicious and creative and all dressings are fresh and homemade. The desserts are also homemade and well worth going off whatever diet you're

on. The Mud Slide, a chocolate lovers' must, was served warm and topped with richice cream. I also thought the Banana Custard Cream pie, made with an Oreo crust,top-notch.

On Tuesday evenings a Prix Fixe menu is offered. Soup or salad, a choice ofselected entrees, coffee and dessert are all included.

If you order BBQ on Wednesday, the beer and Sangria are on the house nowthrough Labor Day.

A lovely back deck is open and the restaurant is offering special Summer saladsand entrees.

The restaurant also offers a very moderate Sunday Brunch, and full cateringservices are available both off and on premises:

R.S. Jones is closed on Monday, and open every other evening for dinner. Livecountry music can be heard this Summer every Tuesday, Friday and every otherThursday evening.

Check the website (rsjones.com) for menus, music, catering, and special holidaycelebrations. Don't miss the upcoming annual pig roast the first Sunday afterLabor Day.

Only cash or American Express are accepted, and reservations are honored forparties of 6 and over.

R.S. Jones is a haven for great food, exceptionally friendly and accommodating .service, and warm-hearted people who appreciate and enjoy Southwestern hospi-tality.

Q

In remembrance of the Bayview playgroundby Marie Martin

On Friday, July 9, 2004, somebody setfire to a dream!

When I first visited the empty school-yard where the Bayview playground stoodfor almost 20 years, a quiet reverence cameover the retired Bayview secretary andteacher assistant I was with. The scene wassurreal. Gone was the playground that 700Bayview children a year had enjoyed everyday. Gone was the swirly slide, the bridges, the swings. Even the trees, their leaves pre-maturely brown, looked sadly at the deso-lation. Bayview playground is gone.

Those who are happy to hear thatFreeport Public Schools were fully insured .and will replace the playground with a"state of the art" playground probably werenot there in 1985 when in one weekend500 or more parents, teenagers, teachersand the principal came together and builtthe Bayview playground. For those whowere there this was more than a play-ground, it was a community project thattook wings and flew!

There was a year and a half of prepara-tion, fund-raising, begging and planningthat preceded the famous weekend. Ask

me...most of it was at my house. From thetime principal Tony Duhammel came upwith the plan to combine the need for anew playgrourid with the need for somecommunity building in a newly mergedschool, the project was on. The Pals of thePlayground were born.

An architect from the Leathers Firm inIthaca arrived in the cafeteria and enlistedthe aid of the children in designing a play-ground that they would love. A castle, aship, swings and the famous slide were allsuggested by the kids. Fund-raising beganin earnest with sweat shirt sales, art auc-tions, the famous "Bring your cans and bot-tles to school" drive that built the fund fivecents at a time. There was a dinner dance, raffles, the "buy-a-board" plans and out-right begging.

Merchants in town outdid themselveswith donation's of money and every kind ofmerchandise. Local organizations present-ed checks and offers of help. Hardwarestores advertised for carpenters to help, supermarkets let us draw pleas for help ongrocery bags and used them to pack gro-ceries, the high school shop built saw hors-es, tools were donated by everyone, gener-ators, Fire Department flood lights were

lent so the workers could stay until mid-night, and the Village of Freeport supplieda boom auger. A huge workforce, encour-aged by the very enthusiastic Bayviewchildren, was assembled for the big week-end.

Over five hundred people showed upduring the weekend. Children too young tohelp were entertained in the "babysittingroom." Middle-sized children sanded thelumber, washed the tires and moved tons ofpea gravel to the site. Breakfast bagels andcoffee were served outside and lunch anddinner, all donated by restaurants andmany food vendors, and cooked by severalvillage chefs and many capable volunteers, were served to all in the cafeteria.

Sunday, May 12, Mothers' Day, wasmade festive with corsages for all thewomen, and the filming of a report whichaired as we ate supper, on WNBC's six

o'clock news. The playground was fin-ished!

For almost 15 years it stood, then under-went a major refurbishing by the districtand should have lasted another 20 years. For those of us who had the privilege ofbeing a part of the planning, the buildingand the fun, a state-of-the-art playgroundisn't going to do it. Nothing will take theplace of the pride we feel in passingBayview School and knowing that thefolks in our community came together andbuilt a thing of joy.

It is not possible in this small space tolist the wonderful people who worked sohard and gave so much to the playgroundproject.A fear of leaving anyone outprompts me not to name names but thosegood people know who they are and tothem we say thank you for having been apart of it.We are sorry for your loss.
