Welcome and thank you for coming to The Salvation Army’s Annual Luncheon! My name is Natalie Jacobson, News Anchor at WCVB-TV 5. I’ve had the honor of being a part of this wonderful Holiday tradition for the past 9 years and each year that I am part of this event, I go home even more amazed at the incredible scope of services offered by The Salvation Army, not only here in Massachusetts but around the world.

Page 3: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

In fact, earlier this year, The Salvation Army began its life-changing work in its 111th country by opening operations in Poland.

When there is a need in communities across our state, The Salvation Army oftentimes adapts its program to meet that need, as is evidenced by their many after-school programs for youth that are aimed at keeping kids off the increasingly dangerous streets and offering them hope for a brighter future.

And that’s probably one of the most inspirational aspects to the work of The Salvation Army- HOPE. Yes, many people receive meals, clothing and a variety of other emergency services but it’s the hope that is represented in those acts of kindness that can change a life.

When people come to The Salvation Army, they don’t just receive help. They receive hope. Hope for a brighter future for themselves, for their family and for their community.

It is now my hope that you have an enjoyable and inspiring afternoon as you learn more about the incredible work of The Salvation Army and their mission of changing lives.

I would now like to invite Major Betty Israel, General Secretary of the Massachusetts Salvation Army, to come and offer this afternoon’s invocation.

LT. COLONEL FRED VAN BRUNT TO FOOT OF STAGE

I trust that you are all enjoying your lunch this afternoon. It is now my distinct honor to introduce the State Commander of The Salvation Army in Massachusetts, Lt. Colonel Fred Van Brunt. I’ve known Colonel for many, many years and it is an honor to witness his commitment to The Salvation Army and to helping others in need. Colonel, please come forward at this time.

NATALIE TO SEAT

12:19 COLONEL TO STAGE (8 minutes)

Thank you, Natalie. As Natalie just mentioned, my name is Fred Van Brunt and I, along with my wife, Colonel Barbara, have the privilege of serving as the state leaders of The Salvation Army in Massachusetts. Barbara, would you please stand to be recognized by this wonderful gathering of supporters.

For more than 40 years, my wife and I have been part of The Salvation Army and it has been a blessing and a privilege to be able to witness the life-changing impact that Salvation Army programs have on so many people who come to us for help. Lives that appear to be in disarray or where a family constantly struggles to make ends meet are changed every day through the efforts of The Salvation Army because someone like you cared enough to help us help others.

Page 5 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 6: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

Last year alone, The Salvation Army rendered more than 3 million acts of compassion to people in need right here in the Commonwealth. “What is an act of compassion?” you might ask. It’s shelter for a homeless person with no where else to turn. It’s a meal for a child with an empty stomach. It’s a visit to an elderly person who has been left behind by society. It’s an afternoon of quality daycare for low-income families. It’s a night of lodging and a fresh start at life for a recovering addict. And so much more.

Most importantly, as Natalie mentioned earlier, our programs are about bringing hope into the lives of people who are feeling alone and helpless in their daily lives.

Many of our efforts over the past year have focused on our disaster relief services, beginning shortly after last Christmas when a devastating Tsunami struck southeast Asia. In that instance, like our response to so many other disasters around the world, The Salvation Army didn’t need to rush into the region to begin administering aid. We were already there with 2,000 Salvation Army Officers and 3,000 employees running our daycare centers, clinics, orphanages and many other programs.

Through that tragedy, The Salvation Army has been able to provide countless acts of service to people who lost their houses, their possessions, their families and their hope.

In that region, The Salvation Army has been directly involved with rebuilding homes, supporting small businesses with grants for equipment and materials, repairing fishing boats and replacing fishing nets, providing essential teaching materials to many of the local schools, providing bicycles as

Page 6 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 7: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

a means of transportation and constructing wells for clean drinking water. These are all in addition to providing many of the basic needs of these devastated people- food, clothing, medical assistance, shelter and counseling.

Here in America, The Salvation Army also stood ready to serve even before Hurricane Katrina made landfall earlier this year. During the storm, local Salvation Army facilities became shelters for those seeking refuge. After the storm, The Salvation Army once again became a symbol of hope.

Since Hurricane Katrina hit the southern United States, The Salvation Army has served more than 1.3 million hurricane survivors, including hundreds in Massachusetts.

Nationwide, The Salvation Army has served more than 12 million meals to hurricane victims and first responders, distributed nearly 160,000 cleaning kits, and has begun assisting with more than 260,000 social service cases. In addition, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Radio Network has received over 61,000 inquiries about missing loved ones and has helped 25,508 survivors find relatives and loved ones.

From Massachusetts, The Salvation Army deployed personnel South to support relief efforts in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to serve as Federal Liaison Officers, Chaplains, Operations Chiefs, Warehouse Manager, Canteen Teams, Social Service Officers, and Site Coordinators.

At Camp Edwards, the Massachusetts Salvation Army responded to a call from Governor Romney to provide

Page 7 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 8: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

primary support to the government during this operation. As a result, The Salvation Army provided food service to those housed at Camp Edwards; toys, cribs and strollers for the children, as well as child care; clothing, footware, toiletries and luggage, with approximately 1,000 items per day being distributed to our guests; airline transportation for survivors to return home or connect with loved ones in another part of the country; debit cards; and ongoing chaplaincy and spiritual support. The Salvation Army has also been able to provide furniture to families resettling here in Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts, The Salvation Army has received over $4 million for hurricane relief, 100 percent of which has been allocated for direct response to the hurricane victims.

While much has been done to help these families – and much more needs to be done, I am continually reminded about the need right here in our own neighborhoods, especially during this time of year.

For instance, we distributed more than 20 tons of turkeys and hundreds of thousands of pounds of groceries at Thanksgiving due to the generosity of so many. Thousands of families received enough food to feed a family of four, five times. And the best part about this program is that these families enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal in their own homes, with the ones they love and cherish.

As the calendar moves closer to Christmas, we at The Salvation Army are again reminded of the incredible need that exists within our community. Starting next Monday at the Park Plaza Castle across the street, we’ll be giving families in need warm winter coats from the Coats for Kids

Page 8 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 9: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

program supported by Anton’s Cleaners, food vouchers, hats, mittens and toys to make Christmas a little brighter for the many children served by The Salvation Army. This year, we expect to serve more than 4,500 families at that one location.

With additional toy distributions across the Commonwealth, from Chelsea and Cambridge to the North Shore and North Adams, I believe we have become the largest Christmas toy distributor in Massachusetts.

You may also have noticed a group of young Girl Scouts in our audience today. They are Girl Scout Troop 3289 from Norfolk, Massachusetts and are led by Kathy Sullivan. They have been a huge help in making Christmas brighter for those less fortunate by decorating bears that will be given to underprivileged children, as well as volunteering their time to help sort and organize toys that will be distributed to families in need next week. Would they please stand and be recognized. Thousands of children’s eyes will sparkle on Christmas morning in part because of your generous support.

NICK STAVROPOLOUS TO FOOT OF STAGE

And as old man winter sets in, we here at The Salvation Army know that the cold weather will bring about people seeking assistance through our Good Neighbor Energy Fund, which helps qualified residents in Massachusetts pay electric, gas and oil bills who, because of temporary financial difficulty, cannot meet their energy expenses but are not eligible for state or federal energy assistance. For the past 20 years, the Good Neighbor Energy Fund has raised more than $12 million dollars and helped over 60,000 residents,

Page 9 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 10: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

basically the working poor and elderly, here in Massachusetts by paying a portion of their heating bill.

Since I just mentioned the Good Neighbor Energy Fund, I thought that this would be a good time to ask Nick Stavropoulos, Executive Vice President of KeySpan Corporation and President of KeySpan Energy Delivery, to join me on stage. I understand that Nick has a special gift to present this afternoon.

12:27NICK STAVROPOLOUS TO COMMENT ON KEYSPAN’S SUPPORT OF GOOD NEIGHBOR ENERGY FUND AND PRESENT CHECK (3 minutes)

12:30COLONEL TO COMPLETE OPENING REMARKS (1 minute)

Thank you, Nick and thank you to KeySpan for your continued support of The Salvation Army. Over the years, KeySpan has been a major contributor to The Salvation Army on a variety of different endeavors, including our capital campaign project at the Children’s Learning Center in Dorchester and helping out at our annual Christmas Castle. Your support is vital to the services we’re able to provide to people in the Commonwealth and this gift will certainly help many, many people this winter.

I would now like to introduce Gary Countryman to you. Gary is the Chairman of The Salvation Army’s State Board of Advisors and an integral part of the reason we are able to meet so many needs across the Commonwealth.

12:31GARY COUNTRYMAN TO STAGE (3 minutes)

Thank you, Colonel. It is always an honor to be here and to learn more about the incredible work of The Salvation Army. As Colonel mentioned, I have the responsibility of serving as the chair of The Salvation Army’s State Board of Advisors. It’s a responsibility that I take seriously because I recognize the important work that’s being done year round by The Salvation Army and I’ve seen first-hand the lives that are touched by this organization. And not only are these lives touched but they’re changed.

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the demand for Salvation Army services right here in Massachusetts. From the far reaches of Western Massachusetts all the way down to Cape Cod, people have been seeking our services in record numbers. And this year appears to be no different. And regardless of whether you live in a town that has a Salvation Army facility, this organization, through a huge network of volunteers, is able to render direct assistance in every zip code in the Commonwealth.

I think one of the things that has impressed me most about The Salvation Army is the work they do with our youngest citizens. From the very young all the way to those who have already walked the journey in front of us, The Salvation

Page 11 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 12: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

Army really does offer something for every age group, especially our children. In fact, right here in the MassBay area, The Salvation Army allocates the greatest portion of its budget on youth programming because they recognize the importance of getting children off to a good start in life. And even when kids sometimes make bad decisions, The Salvation Army is still there for them, offering help and hope for a brighter future.

I think that one of the most amazing programs for youth offered by The Salvation Army is Camp Wonderland, located in Sharon. While Camp Wonderland is only 30 miles south of Boston, for many young children, this is the only vacation they get each summer. And for 80 years, The Salvation Army has been operating Camp Wonderland, where 1,200 children come each summer. That’s more than 100,000 children who have been directly impacted by The Salvation Army at this one location alone.

Before Colonels Barbara and Fred come to introduce the “Others” Award, I want to let everyone know that in a few weeks The Salvation Army will be opening its new facility in Salem, Massachusetts that the North Shore Salvation Army will call home. As part of our Capital Campaign and with the leadership of Caleb Loring and his wife, Bonny, this new facility will directly impact the surrounding communities for many years to come.

Program space for at-risk youth and an after-school learning center will help the young people in that area excel when they most need to. It is through the generosity of so many that The Salvation Army will be able to do so much with that new facility in Salem and meet our mission of helping people in

Page 12 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 13: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

need, whether they’re infants, teenagers, single parents, families struggling to make ends meet or senior citizens with no where else to turn.

I’d like to ask Caleb to stand and be recognized for his local leadership, along with the North Shore Board Members and the fund raising team, as well as Majors Scott and Susan Kelly who are the Corps Officers for the North Shore Salvation Army.

We also want to thank those who have contributed to our on going MassBay Capital Campaign. By the way, if all goes well, Cambridge is next.

At this time, Colonels Barbara and Fred Van Brunt are going to introduce this afternoon’s “Others” Award.

12:34COLONELS BARBARA AND FRED VAN BRUNT TO STAGE FOR INTRODUCTION OF THE “OTHERS” AWARD (2 minutes)

Thank you again, Gary. We are certainly honored to have your enthusiastic support for our programs.

It is now time for us to present this year’s “Others” Award to a most deserving individual.

General William Booth, Founder of The Salvation Army, wanted to send out some encouraging words to his troops and officers around the world at Christmas time. But when he went to have a telegram sent he found the cost too prohibitive to send a full letter. Instead, William Booth sent a one-word

Page 13 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 14: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

telegram— “Others.” This one word telegram continues to be a reminder that the mission of The Salvation Army is “Others”— people in need are our priority. This is what William Booth charged to his soldiers and officers nearly 100 years ago and his message still rings true today.

Today, the “Others” Award honors an individual or organization exemplifying an extraordinary spirit of services to “others.” Recipients of this award exhibit dedication and compassion through exceptional service benefiting The Salvation Army and the community.

Before presenting this year’s “Others” Award, I’d like for you to turn your attention to the video screen for a few moments as we witness what an extraordinary man we are honoring today.

Page 15: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

Larry, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Citizens Financial Group, Inc. has been a long-time supporter of The Salvation Army. Under his leadership, Citizens Bank has generously supported The Salvation Army with two separate pledges for our $20 million MassBay Capital Campaign.

As we just heard in the video, Larry holds many leadership positions around the world, including being a Director of The Royal Bank of Scotland and a member of the board of trustees of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He is also an overseer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is on the board of directors of Boston’s Dimock Community Foundation.

He has chaired numerous capital campaigns, including major initiatives to assist Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women in Boston, and The Vietnamese Community Center, a facility for nonprofit agencies that provide economic development and social services to Boston’s 20,000 Vietnamese refugee and immigrant families. He is particularly interested in the issues of immigration and urban poverty, and serves as a volunteer at inner-city organizations in Boston and Providence.

For these reasons, and many more, we are here today to honor Larry Fish. For his unending efforts to improve the quality of life and future for others, it is my privilege to present the “Others” Award to Lawrence K. Fish, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Citizens Financial Corporation. Larry, thank you for all you do for the community and for all you have done for The Salvation

At this time, I’d like to ask Major Michael Finer to join me on stage.

MAJOR MICHAEL FINER TO STAGE

***BEGIN INITIAL SLIDES FROM MAJOR FINER’S POWERPOINT PRESENTATION***

Major Finer is the Commander of the Massachusetts National Guard’s 181st Infantry Battalion, and was the leader of Task Force Yankee, which was mobilized on September 3rd, 2005 for the purpose of providing humanitarian support, security, search and rescue operations to the citizens of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

As Commander, Major Finer led more than 500 soldiers and airmen in a 1,500 mile journey from Massachusetts to New Orleans with only enough supplies and equipment that they could carry on their backs and in about 10 vehicles.

During their deployment, the soldiers and airmen of Task Force Yankee assisted more than 2,600 citizens in their Civilian Assistance Center, rescued 200 pets, and evacuated approximately 150 citizens. Major Finer, who was partially responsible for rescuing a 71-year-old World War II veteran who had survived 18 days in his attic with no food and just a few jugs of drinking water, has appeared on Good Morning America and has also been featured in The New York Times and the Boston Herald, among many other publications.

Page 17 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Thank you, Major Finer. We are grateful to you and all the members of our military who have served, not only here in America, but around the world. Because of your efforts, organizations like The Salvation Army are able to go into new areas and meet the needs of people around the world. Thank you for all you and your Battalion have done.

My name is Locke Ogens and I have the honor of serving as the Chair for The Salvation Army’s Greater Boston Advisory Board. I hope that you’ve been touched by what you’ve seen

Page 18 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

and heard today and that you’ll consider joining this incredible Army.

If you find yourself wanting to help The Salvation Army help others today, then I would encourage you to talk to your table host about ways to get involved with The Salvation Army. In addition, for a small donation of $20, you can take a teddy bear home with you today. And if you do purchase a teddy bear, you will also receive a complimentary copy of Natalie Jacobson’s cooking videos as a token of her appreciation.

There are also angels in each centerpiece with varying needs that you can help The Salvation Army meet. If each person here today could take one angel, The Salvation Army could help make this holiday season so much brighter for so many more people. You can even take the angel tag home with you and hang it on your tree as a reminder of the needs of others in our community this Christmas season.

For those of you want to do even more, I would encourage you to look into joining The Army Behind The Army. The Army Behind The Army is a giving society that was created to provide sustaining support for Salvation Army programs across the state that are aimed at changed lives. With your gift of $1,000 or more, you will witness the impact that your donation can have on someone’s life. If you’re interested in joining The Army Behind The Army there are information packets available as you leave this afternoon and I would encourage you to take one of those packets and find out how you can directly impact the lives of people served by The Salvation Army.

Page 19 of 23 4/11/2023 4:45:38 PM

Page 20: 2005 Annual Luncheon Script

I have been involved with The Salvation Army for many years and I can honestly say that they are able to take your support and use it to change lives like I have never seen before. I hope that you will find it in your heart to consider joining The Salvation Army.

You’ve heard a lot about The Salvation Army’s disaster relief efforts today and before we close out this afternoon’s program, there is just one more person that Colonel, Natalie and I would like to introduce to you.

COLONEL AND NATALIE TO STAGE

As Colonel mentioned earlier, The Salvation Army in Massachusetts has raised over $4 million for its hurricane relief efforts this year. We remain grateful for and humbled by the support of everyone who has helped us through these devastating storms, including Citizens Bank. After learning that The Salvation Army chose to honor Larry Fish this year and under his direction, the customers and employees of Citizens Bank, with the help of a matching gift from the bank itself, were so generous in raising $856,572 throughout its thirteen state service area for our hurricane relief efforts.

While that is an amazing gift, there is one individual with us today who particularly touched our hearts with her special efforts. Would Abigail Cissel join us on stage to share some of her story. (Dad, you can come with her if you’d like).

Before Natalie comes to close out this afternoon’s program, there is just one last presentation that I would like to make today.

For almost a decade, Natalie has been part of The Salvation Army’s Annual Luncheon. In fact, she’s become part of the tradition of this annual event. In addition to her support for this event, Natalie has been a strong supporter of the work we’re involved with across the Commonwealth, as we witnessed in her introduction to the video we saw a few minutes ago.

For all you do for The Salvation Army, Natalie, it is my privilege to present this Award of Appreciation to you this afternoon. Thank you for your continued and faithful support of The Salvation Army!

Thank you again, Colonel, for allowing me to be a part of this fine holiday tradition. And we are also grateful for all of your support, as well, today. The work that The Salvation Army does throughout the Commonwealth would not be possible without the kind and generous support that we receive from you.

From the dedicated staff and board members to the new friends who may just be learning about the wide array of services that The Salvation Army provides in the Commonwealth, your support helps The Salvation Army help others. Again, thank you for coming today and thank you for helping us change lives.
