Emmett September 2003A writer using the first-person injecting himself intoa story is usually cause for alarm, particularly in apersonality profile, but it worked here. The contrastbetween the writer and the subject added an extracomic dimension to this profile of the classic oldcoot. The writer seemed to know when to step backand let Ray Krone tell his story. Great descriptionthroughout. A highly enjoyable read that takes thereader along for the ride.

3rdKeeneland“Her Kingdom For A Horse”By Sue Wylie June 2004Kudos to the writer for bravely interviewing theforthright matriarch of Claiborne Farms. Lots ofgreat description and quotes. A wonderful windowinto a world that has all but disappeared.

The writer hasa real talent for telling a story using logical andoften entertaining transitions that keep the narrativethread taut. The quotes give readers a good feel fora horse who “thinks he's hot stuff” — and givesreaders good reason to agree.

Thisis simply great storytelling, at its best.

Toproduce a magazine of this excellence weekly is anaccomplishment that deserves top honors. Thisweekly news tabloid stands among the best of itskind of any tabloid in the country. What beautifulcovers, including news heads with page numbers tohelp readers find the stories. There’s an excellent

table of contents, and then a fine “News Line”section opens each issue. Despite the timeconstraints, the tabloid has bright heads, superiorphotography that is accompanied by solid, inform-ative captions, and good subheads or entry points.And then there’s the exhaustive, thorough coverageand fine, lively writing. Sue HakolaSue returned to college at age 32 after 18 years asan operating room trauma nurse. She graduatedfrom Ohio State University with a degree in medicalillustration and started a freelance business inmedical and veterinary anatomy and illustration in1991. In 1995, she formed Equistar Publications,Ltd. to produce the Illustrated Atlas of ClinicalEquine Anatomy and Common Disorders of theHorse. She is co-owner, manager, and sole veteri-nary illustrator for the company. She has wonnumerous awards with the equine books and has hadartwork on display in the Smithsonian Institute andin museums in Japan, Germany and Great Britain.She has worked as an adjunct professor at the OhioState University in medical illustration.

G. W. HallG.W. has a proven track record of success in helpingmany kinds of organizations achieve communicationgoals. As President of Fighting Fox Creative Forces,he has written and edited copy for numerousnewsletters, magazines, brochures, press releases,web sites, radio broadcasts, and print ads. In addi-tion, G.W. often coordinates the production anddistribution of his clients' publications. Along theway, he has won many different awards for writingand newsletter production.

In addition to his work as an independent writer,G.W. currently serves as Immediate Past Presidentof the Atlanta Chapter of the InternationalAssociation of Business Communicators (IABC).He has also served as the chapter's Director, Financeand Director, Communications. Wes IshmaelWes Ishmael of Benbrook, Texas, began writing forlivestock publications in 1983. He was editor ofLimousin World magazine for several years, thenDirector of Advertising and Communications for theNorth American Limousin Foundation. In 1996 hefounded Clear Point Communications and nowoperates the business with his wife, Sharla. ClearPoint Communications provides editorial, commu-nications services and consulting to a variety ofclients in the livestock industry. Ishmael also writesthree monthly columns related to the cattle business.He was named the Livestock Publication Council’swriter of the year in 2002.

Amy KnappA 1987 graduate of Western Michigan University,Kalamazoo, Michigan, with a Bachelor of ScienceDegree in Criminal Justice and Social Work, Ms.Knapp began her career as the administrator of a resi-dential facility for suicidal adolescent females. Afull-time training position within the same organiza-tion eventually led her to the business world where shestarted writing and facilitating courses on sales,confrontation and time management. In 1991, Amyleft social work and joined forces with two other verytalented women to form Concept to Promotion, a

specialty advertising company. Within five years, saleshad exceeded a million dollars a year and Amy wasdoing national and international promotions for largecorporations headquartered in Michigan.

Six months after starting this business, Amy marriedher husband Dave and in 1993, their son Kyle was bornfollowed in 1995 by daughter Natalie. When Amywas struggling to get her family organized after shebecame a full-time stay-at-home mom, she neverimagined that her ideas would turn into a successfulbusiness venture. Frustrated with various methods ofkeeping track of appointments, errands, and schedules,she created The Family Organizer that was introducedat the Book Expo in Los Angeles (April, 1999). Today,Amy is still a stay at home mom and says that creatingThe Family Organizer has been a wonderful diversionto the everyday activities around the house, as well asa major tool in keeping her organized enough to meetall of her responsibilities and still enjoy life.

Raymond J. LamontRay is editor of The Westerly (R.I.) Sun, vice presi-dent of its parent company, Sun Publishing Co., inWesterly, R.I., and the current president of the NewEngland Society of Newspaper Editors, an organi-zation of editors that presents professional work-shops and other services for editors, reporters,photographers and designers throughout the six-state region. Ray has spent more than 25 years in thefield of journalism, beginning as a sportswriter andlater service as Education editor, City Hall reporterand Business Editor with his hometown paper, TheBerkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Mass. He went on toserve as City Editor of the Daily News-Record inHarrisonburg, Va., managing editor of the DailyLocal News in West Chester, Pa., and as Editor ofthe Times-Herald in Norristown, Pa., prior to takinghis position with The Westerly Sun in March 2000.He has served as a judge for the American HorsePublications competition since 1999.

Karen McMahonKaren is editor of Farm Industry News, headquar-tered in Minneapolis, Minn. This magazine focuseson new products and technology for 250,000 farmersin the Midwest. She has written for several otheragricultural publications over the past 20 years, aswell as entered many editorial contests. So sheknows what everyone is going through during theawards presentations. Karen was raised in northwestIowa on a corn/soybean farm with cattle, hogs, and

John MeekinsJohn worked as a daily reporter for several largenewspapers for 20 years, and taught journalism for10 years. Most recently, he has been using his skillsas a public relations writer for the State of Ohio. Forthree years he was also editor of The OhioHorseman News.

During his years of teaching journalism, hereviewed thousands of articles. He lives inColumbus, Ohio.

Dr. Philip E. Prater, DVM, DIPL. ACTDr. Prater is an Associate Professor of VeterinaryTechnology. He received his DVM degree from TheOhio State University (1984) with an internship inLarge Animal Ambulatory Medicine at OSU in1985-86. Dr. Prater continued his education with aresidency in theriogenology at the University ofTennessee in 1986-88, where he attended to all in-house reproductive referrals and performed routineambulatory visits to equine, dairy and beef clients.While at Tennessee, his research projects focused onassisted reproductive techniques in domesticanimals, and reproductive endocrinology associ-ated with the performance of these techniques. Hebecame a Diplomate of the American College ofTheriogenologists in 1989.

After seven years in private practice, Dr. Praterjoined the faculty at the Morehead State University —Veterinary Technology Program where his primaryresponsibilities include teaching large animal clinicalprocedures and health maintenance of the equine andfood animal herds on the university farm. He has alsodeveloped a large animal referral center for patients fromveterinarians in the region. Dr. Prater serves on theKentucky Veterinary Medical Association’s EmergencyManagement Committee. He has authored and co-authored several peer reviewed articles and also twobook chapters on large and small animal reproduction.

Dr. Prater serves as faculty advisor to Pre-Veterinary Medicine students and the Pre-Vet club atMorehead State. He has served since 1996 on thePublic Relations Committee of the American Collegeof Theriogenologists, which he chaired from 1996 –1998. From 1999-2001, he served on the Board ofDirectors of the ACT. Dr. Prater and his wife andthree sons live in Wallingford, Kentucky, where theyenjoy trail riding with their five horses.

Richard RabilDick has over 27 years in the design field. Heobtained a BFA in Communication Arts and Designfrom Virginia Commonwealth University inRichmond, Va., in 1977. For five years, he was artdirector at the Council for Advancement andSupport of Education, a leading higher educationassociation that focused on marketing and admis-sions at colleges and universities. In 1982, he estab-lished Rabil & Associates Design, whose workwon awards from the Art Directors Club ofMetropolitan Washington (ADCMW), PrintMagazine, and Printing Industry of Maryland.

In 1997, he formed R+B Design Firm which haswon over 80 awards in the design field. Dick is amember of the Board of Trade of Washington, D.C.,on the Board of the American MarketingAssociation, a member of the InternationalAssociation of Business Communicators,ADCMW, and formerly with the Olde TowneGaithersburg Maryland Advisory Committee.

Don RanlyDr. Ranly has been a professor of journalism at theMissouri School of Journalism for 31 years. He isa veteran presenter of more than 950 writing andediting seminars and author of books on the subject.Don is internationally sought as a writing and publi-cations expert and has been a guest speaker at AHPseminars on three occasions.

Sharon ReuterSharon is a partner in a successful design firm,specializing in publication design. She has almost25 years experience and has won numerous nationaldesign awards. Projects include designing startupmagazines, one-time publications and redesigningexisting magazines and newsletters. Her firmrecently designed a startup computer publicationcalled Queue, and continues to design and producethe magazine ten times a year. Prior to startingReuter and Associates, located in Baltimore,Sharon worked for Ziff-Davis Publishing, CondeNast and Time Warner in New York City.

Sherry RossSherry has been a sportswriter for 26 years. Since1995, she has worked for the New York Daily Newsas a writer and hockey columnist. Her assignmentsinclude the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup racesas well as other major Thoroughbred racing eventsin addition to the National Hockey League. Sherry

For the past 11 years, she hasauthored the annual guide, “The Hockey ScoutingReport.” A lifelong horse lover, she owns a 28-year-old American Quarter Horse who is enjoying semi-retirement in New Jersey. She is a 1977 graduate ofRutgers University.

Thomas A. SchwartzTom has taught reporting, editing and photojour-nalism for 25 years at three universities. An associateprofessor in the School of Communication at OhioState University, he has won awards for writing andphotography for newspapers and a magazine.

Robert SugarRob is the owner and creative director of AURAS,a publication design and consulting firm located inSilver Spring, Md. Over the twenty years that thestudio has been in existence, he has been responsiblefor the design or redesign of over 50 magazine titlesand the execution of nearly 70 identity campaignsfor corporations, associations and businesses.

An early pioneer in electronic publishing,AURAS has been all-digital since 1989, and Rob hasbeen responsible for advancing the quality of elec-tronic publishing by evangelizing higher qualitystandards to manufacturers, software and hardwaredevelopers and end users through demonstrations,beta testing and writing in the trade. Marcia Zarley TaylorMarcia is a Des Moines, Iowa native who reports onfarm policy, agricultural finance, and environmentalissues for the nation’s leading farm magazinepublisher. In 1988, shetook a break from official duties to serve as a visiting

Sonia WascoSonia is President at Grant Heilman Photography,Inc., a world renowned photo library specializing inall areas of agriculture including an excellent equinecollection. She earned a B.S in Animal Husbandryfrom Delaware Valley College of Science andAgriculture and her M.S. in Agriculture Educationfrom Pennsylvania State University.

During her 19 years with this stock photo library,she has been responsible for the selection of allimages entered into the files. The library currentlyhouses nearly a million images from over 100photographers, all specialists in their subjects. Dave WohlfarthDave is a mass communications instructor at WestTexas A&M University where he teaches printmedia classes. He's in his 14th year of teaching. For12 years at the school, he also served as the adviserfor WTAMU's award-winning newspaper, ThePrairie. He has served as a judge for many publi-cations and contests, including the AssociatedCollegiate Press Association. Before becoming ateacher, Wohlfarth spent 27 years in daily newspa-pers, including stops in Dayton, Ohio, (as a sportswriter, copy editor and news editor) and Lincoln,

Neb. (executive sports editor). Dave earned a B.A.in journalism from the University of Nebraska in1964 and a master's in mass communications fromTexas Tech University in 1992. He is an avid tennisplayer; his wife is an avid horse person whocompetes in cutting. His daughter, Jenny, is a formerAmerican Quarter Horse Journal copy editor andcolumnist.

Jenny WohlfarthJenny’s articles have appeared in a variety ofconsumer and trade magazines, ranging from horseand animal topics to design, architecture, travel,business, environmental and regional interests. Shebegan her career at The Quarter Horse Journal andlater worked as a writer/editor for several nationalmagazines. She is a former managing editor of HOWMagazine, a bimonthly trade magazine for graphicdesigners, and former executive editor of I.D.(International Design) Magazine, another award-winning design publication. She currently teachesmagazine journalism as a visiting assistant professorat the University of Cincinnati and continues towrite and publish magazine articles.
