All-New Touring Package Moves Odyssey A Step Above The 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring package is designed to provide the ultimate level of technology and luxury in one convenient package. As the light truck market expands into a more sophisticated mode of transportation, the demand for premium features is increasing in the minivan segment. The 2005 Odyssey meets this demand by incorporating more than a dozen exclusive and upscale features along with special interior trim, seamlessly blending luxury features into a minivan package. The result is a vehicle that can deliver the best of all worlds – performance, luxury, safety, technology and functionality – with seating for seven adults. The 1999 Odyssey interior redefined the role of a minivan with its solid ergonomics, outstanding comfort with functionality and, of course, the three-passenger Third Row Magic SeatTM. The Odyssey and its innovative features have influenced other manufacturers, and the 2005 Odyssey is poised to raise the bar once again. With first-class seating areas in all three rows and an emphasis on comfort and space efficiency, interior innovations focus on safety equipment, additional seating capacity (eight passenger available), in-floor storage, and more accessible and flexible third row seating. Sophisticated interior styling enhancements and available features such as a tri-zone climate control and power moonroof bring a new level of luxury to the Odyssey. While some minivans utilize a folding 2nd row seat to improve cargo space access, the Odyssey uses full captains chairs (removable) that slide forward and back by up to 240 mm as well as sliding together or apart. Not only does this approach provide enhanced cargo flexibility, it helps ensure that the frequently used second row seats maintain a high level of comfort and flexibility.

The 2005 Odyssey now provides six individual Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags with coverage areas in all three rows of seating with a new side curtain airbag system that incorporates rollover sensor technology. For comparison, the 2004 Odyssey, which achieved a 5-star rating for front and side impacts from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), had four individual airbags – standard driver’s and front passenger’s supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags along with driver’s and front passenger’s side airbags. Internal Honda testing shows that the 2005 Honda Odyssey will achieve a 5-star rating for front and side impacts from NHTSA. Moving beyond comfort, functionality and safety, the interior décor emphasizes the style and sophistication consistent with a premium luxury sedan. A deeply sculpted dashboard, attractively integrated trim pieces, along with a solid and precise fit and finish throughout help elevate the overall Odyssey interior experience. Seating for eight passengers is standard on the EX and EX with Leather trim levels courtesy of an innovative new Stowable 2nd-Row PlusOne SeatTM that can be quickly and easily removed then stored in the in-floor storage area when not needed. For easier access to the third row, the second row seats now use a convenient walk-in slide mechanism (similar to those commonly found on 2-door coupe automobiles). An in-floor storage area (with a rotating “Lazy Suzan” storage tray on EX, EX with Leather and Touring models) has been added in between the first and second rows. Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control is standard on Touring model and a moonroof is standard on EX trim levels with leather interior and the Touring model. The new Touring model adds to the luxury sedan theme with features such as adjustable power pedals, unique interior trim, high-power 360-watt premium audio system, and a power tailgate. Overall, the new Odyssey offers more creature comforts than ever on all trim levels as it achieves top levels of quietness, comfort and safety. exhibits a solid and dynamic direction with styling accents that create a uniform beltline around the vehicle. The lines generate a powerful stance and an enveloping feeling of safety. Yet, safety for the Odyssey is much more than skin deep. The 2005 Odyssey employs Honda’s revolutionary new Advanced Compatibility EngineeringTM (ACE)TM Body Structure system. This newly developed front-end frame structure incorporates new upper and lower frame members to significantly enhance energy dissipation in a frontal collision. The design also helps reduce the potential for misalignment with the frame of the opposing vehicle. Taken together, these features result in increased compatibility between vehicles of different size categories for significantly enhanced occupant protection and reduced aggressivity toward other vehicles in a collision. Chassis: Performance Beyond a Minivan New Features:

The handling of the Odyssey has always demonstrated that a minivan can have sporty aspirations in addition to utility and comfort. Considered by many to be the best handling minivan on the market, the target for the all-new Odyssey chassis tuning went from secure and solid car-like on the previous model to sports luxury sedan-like for the 2005 model. Major refinements have been made to reduce road noise, increase steering linearity and firmness with a better on-centre feel, improved ride comfort and better overall rigidity. Translation: the new Odyssey soaks up bumps and feels more stable and less fatiguing while driving on uneven pavement surfaces or in strong crosswinds, plus it is designed to be more fun to drive. The choppy feeling caused by the expansion joints in cement slabs has been greatly reduced along with the sounds and vibration forces transmitted from hitting potholes and bumps.

The changes to the chassis are extensive and provide significant ride and handling benefits. Improved ride comfort has been assisted by bigger tires, larger and stronger bushings, and revised shock absorber placement/tuning on the double wishbone rear suspension. Additionally through these changes, front-end dive and body roll is noticeably reduced.

Enhanced stability has been achieved through the addition of a new generation of Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with Traction Control that independently engages the four-wheel disc brakes during heavy cornering to reduce oversteer and understeer conditions. Plus, the Traction Control now modulates fuel delivery in addition to the ignition system during low traction situations. The VSA system is standard on every Odyssey model and trim level as part of Honda’s new “Safety for Everyone” initiative. Powertrain: Advanced Technology for Economy and Performance New Features:

The 2005 Honda Odyssey receives a 15 horsepower (6 percent) boost compared to the 2004 model and an increase in EPA highway fuel economy by as much as 12 percent on models with the i-VTEC VCM engine. Two engine choices are available for the first time ever on the Odyssey – a SOHC VTEC V-6 and a SOHC i-VTEC V-6 with Variable Cylinder ManagementTM (VCMTM). The 2005 Odyssey engine only requires regular unleaded gasoline, which provides a long-term cost-of-ownership advantage compared to some competitor minivans that require premium unleaded fuel to achieve maximum horsepower rating.

i-VTEC Engine

Variable Cylinder Management (standard equipment on EX with Leather and Touring models) increases fuel efficiency by “shutting off” three of the engine’s six cylinders during cruising and deceleration. For performance, the engine operates on all six cylinders during acceleration and heavy load situations. The system works seamlessly and is transparent to the driver in feel and sound.

VCM Valvetrain In fact, the Odyssey models with VCM are especially quiet because those vehicles are equipped with Active Noise Control (ANC) technology that works with the audio system to effectively cancel inherent noise produced by the VCM system (along with some road noise). Additional NVH dampening occurs through the use of an Active Control Engine Mount System (ACM) that uses electrically activated dampers to minimize engine vibration for an incredibly smooth and quiet driving experience.

Honda Safety for Everyone Commitment Just as Honda has long been associated with high quality, reliable and fun-to-drive vehicles, Honda is also committed to delivering the safest vehicles on the road. Demonstrating this commitment, Honda is providing a core suite of advanced safety features as standard equipment on all models and trim levels– with some features that are not available anywhere else. The 2005 Odyssey marks a significant milestone in the application of Honda safety technology since it is the first Honda vehicle in North America to fully implement Honda’s Safety for Everyone commitment. The Safety for Everyone commitment includes the following:

All Honda and Acura vehicles, with the exception of a small number of specialty vehicles, will get Front Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags and Anti-Lock Brakes as standard equipment before the end of calendar year 2006.

All Honda and Acura light trucks, including all SUVs and minivans, will be equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) and rollover sensors for side curtain airbag deployment before the end of calendar year 2006.

Honda’s Advanced Compatibility EngineeringTM (ACE)TM body structure, offering enhanced occupant protection with reduced aggressivity toward other vehicles, will be applied to all new vehicle platforms in the U.S. and globally over the next six to seven years. The 2005 model Honda Odyssey minivan and new 2005 Acura RL sedan are the first U.S. models to carry this new technology.

In its efforts to increase safety for all road users, Honda will further expand the use of features designed to reduce injuries to pedestrians from the current industry-leading 10 models.

These initiatives represent the next logical step in the evolution of Honda’s “Safety for Everyone” concept, a comprehensive approach to vehicle safety that seeks to provide high levels of occupant protection for all Honda and Acura vehicles regardless of size or price, along with reduced aggressivity toward other vehicles and improved safety for pedestrians.

Environmental Leadership Honda has consistently led the industry in meeting new emission requirements and bringing advanced engines and emission technologies to the customer. In addition to providing class leading fuel economy, the 2005 Odyssey qualifies as a LEV2-ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle in California and some Eastern states) and Tier 2 Bin 5 in the U.S. Federal emissions program. To achieve Tier 2-Bin 5 classification, a vehicle must reduce NOx emissions by at least 75 percent over pre-existing levels. Honda is the industry leader in certifying vehicles to the Tier 2 standards. In 2002, Honda became the first manufacturer to offer gasoline-powered vehicles to the final Tier 2 requirements. In 2003, more than 50 percent of vehicles sold by Honda were certified to meet the tougher emission standards, two years ahead of the requirements and more than the rest of the industry combined. For 2004, Honda has certified more than 60 percent of its total vehicle fleet to the Tier 2 standards, compared to an industry average of 35 percent. Engineers also targeted a high level of parts’ recyclability. More than 90 percent of the 2005 Odyssey component parts are made of recyclable materials. Additional measures taken to reduce the long-term environmental impact of the vehicle include:

The use of non-chromed tanned leather in leather-equipped models reduces hazardous waste generation during the tanning process and can be composted at the end of the vehicle’s life;

Elimination of PVC material in interior parts including door lining, shift knob, seat trim

and center console lid and exterior parts such as roof and door moldings, weather strips and tubes for improved recyclability;

Reduced amount of environmentally hazardous materials by eliminating halogens for

flame retardant materials and eliminated lead in wheel balancers and electro-deposition coatings;

Use of water-borne (solvent free) paint for exterior surfaces, reducing emissions during

the paint process;

Use of molded-in colour plastics for reduced paint use and factory emissions;

Replacement of ABS plastic with polypropylene material in the centre console, instrument panel and doors for reduced emissions during ABS plastic manufacturing; and

Long-life fluids that result in no required engine coolant change for the first 10 years or

192,000 km, and engine oil changes that are prescribed (with the Smart Maintenance Indicator) at intervals of one year or 12,000 km under normal circumstances, less often than typically required.

Three Row Seating with Available Room for Eight While some minivan manufacturers have modified interior designs to meet the Odyssey’s class leading functionality, the Odyssey has moved its already class-leading functionality into new territory for the minivan – function with real style and sophistication. On every trim level – the LX, EX, EX with Leather and Touring – the seats now provide unique features that deliver new levels of luxury and value for each trim level. As before, cloth seats are standard on the LX and EX, while leather seating, logically, is standard on the EX with Leather and on the new Touring model. Notable new features for 2005 include eight-passenger seating (exclusively on the EX and EX with Leather) achieved with the addition of a Stowable 2nd Row PlusOne™ Seat that fits between the two full-size second row captains chairs. First Row Seats For 2005, the front row captains chairs are taller (+50mm) and slightly wider (+5mm) with a cushion shape designed to accommodate more body types and improve driving posture. The design focuses on posture stabilization during acceleration and cruising (longitudinal), and during cornering (lateral) with the ultimate goal of reducing fatigue. The sliding feature helps accommodate people and cargo with the ability to move seats to accommodate the situation. Also, the second row seats use the slide-forward feature to allow easier ingress and egress to the third row (similar to a coupe front seat). access to the cargo area simple and fast. A lever located on the back of the seat (one for each of the 60/40 split sections) allows for easy fold down operation. To put the seat down, the user simply pulls on the lever to release the latch and the seat retracts down into its in-floor storage area – in one smooth motion – creating a flat floor cargo area. The system is spring loaded and is designed to be operated with just one hand. Beverage Holders The 2005 Odyssey provides 17 beverage holders on Touring models and 15 beverage holders on LX, EX and EX with Leather models. Driving Position The driving position of the 2005 Odyssey has been optimized for comfort and performance. For comfort, the steering tilt range has increased to 41 mm (+10 mm). For a stronger performance feel, the top of the steering wheel angle (relative to the driver) has been positioned 4.5 degrees closer to vertical. For both comfort and performance, lateral displacement of the steering wheel has been eliminated so the center of the steering wheel lines up directly with the centerline of the driver and the steering wheel is 22mm closer to the driver.

The seats can be configured to accommodate people and cargo in dozens of ways. For maximum cargo storage, second row seats can be removed and third row seats retracted for a cargo volume of 147.4 cu. ft. This also provides a flat surface that can accommodate 4x8 sheets of building materials. Note that the second row and third row seat backs can fold forward to accommodate up to 4x8-size objects on top of the seats, a handy feature if seat removal is not practical at the moment. In-Floor Storage (with Lazy Susan) Standard all models is a new circular in-floor storage area located between the front and second rows. On EX and above models, a Lazy Susan circular storage area is included that rotates when one of the two top access doors are open, and locks in place when the access doors are shut. The storage area is an ideal place to keep not-often-used objects that need quick access ranging from paper towels to toys to beverages, etc. Accessory thermal packs are available to maintain warm and cool temperatures when storing beverages. With the Lazy Susan removed, the in-floor storage area provides enough space to store the Stowable 2nd Row PlusOne Seat™ (on the EX and EX with Leather models) when not in use.

Instrument Panel and Controls The instrument panel and controls reflect the style and sophistication of the 2005 Odyssey in addition to the typical Honda attention to detail and class leading ergonomics. The deeply sculpted two-tone dashboard is similar to designs used on fine luxury sedans. Careful attention has been paid to shape, tactile feel, fit and finish on every surface and control ranging from the metallic décor trim pieces to the available flipdown 8-inch navigation screen on models with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System. The instrument panel is sloped so that both primary and secondary controls are within easy reach.

Instruments and gauges are housed in a pod directly in front of the driver and feature a progressive meter illumination program that begins when the driver enters the vehicle. The LX, EX and EX with Leather trim levels include a tachometer, an illuminated and easy-to-read speedometer with two LCD digital trip odometers, a main LCD digital odometer and a smart maintenance display that tracks oil life and other maintenance items. The fuel gauge and temperature gauge are to the right of the speedometer, and a gear selector indicator is to the left. Various indicator lights for SRS, ABS, oil pressure, battery, etc., are also housed in the main instrument pod. The Touring model adds a bilingual Multi-Information Display that shows fuel economy, compass information, kilometers to empty and smart maintenance information along with user-customizable options throughout the vehicle (see following pages for a more detailed description). Further refinement to the controls includes an instrument panel mounted gear-shift lever within convenient reach from the steering wheel. The shifter now features a button to engage and disengage the overdrive feature of the transmission for towing and/or driving in hilly terrain. CPU-controlled functions such as the various warning systems, illumination intensity, intermittent wipers, power windows, etc., are divided among three separate CPUs. Communication between the CPU is via a multiplex data bus. This takes considerably less wiring and is quicker and easier to install and service. The driver’s SRS module is housed in the steering wheel. Cruise control, as well as audio controls on EX and above models, and MID controls on Touring models, are also mounted on the steering wheel. The windshield wiper controls and lighting controls are also mounted on stalks on either side of the steering wheel, in typical Honda fashion. On/Off buttons for the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and traction control are mounted on the instrument panel, just to the left of the steering wheel, as are controls for the available power moonroof (EX with Leather and Touring) and dual sliding doors (EX and above). Illuminated power window and lock controls are mounted on the driver’s door. EX and above models feature illuminated steering wheel controls for the audio system and cruise control switch. Power Adjustable Pedals The Odyssey Touring model has power-assisted adjustable foot pedals designed to appeal to drivers of various heights for enhanced flexibility. The pedals can be adjusted forward and back by as much as 76mm.

Standard Climate Control The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system uses two air-conditioning condensers and two heater cores to create a dual zone climate control for front and rear passengers on all trim levels. One set of controls serve the front of the interior and one set serves the rear passenger area. The high capacity condenser for the air-conditioning system has an internal receiver tank that first runs the liquid refrigerant through a sub-cooling condenser, then to the main condenser. The system is efficient and lightweight compared to traditional setups. Inside, the front controls on the Odyssey LX are mounted centrally on the centre console for easy accessibility and feature large rotary knobs and electrical switches. Air conditioning and a micron air-filtration system are standard. Both the front and the rear systems can be controlled from the driver’s HVAC panel, or the driver can switch control of the rear system to the panel in the rear passenger compartment. The Odyssey’s rear air-conditioning system provides a separate five-speed blower control located in the rear passenger compartment ceiling, along with a selector for overhead air conditioning or foot level heated air. Second row and third row outboard seating positions feature individually adjustable air conditioning vents in the ceiling, much like those in commercial aircraft passenger cabins. The vents can also be shut off completely.

Odyssey Ventilation System Automatic Climate Control In addition to above standard features, Odyssey EX and EX with Leather models feature a dual zone Automatic Climate Control System (with a digital display) and can maintain a constant, pre-selected temperature individually for driver’s and front passenger’s seating areas. If desired, the rear passengers can select temperature and fan settings on a rear-mounted set of manual dial controls (independently from the front climate zone).

Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control The Odyssey Touring model provides a Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control system. This system allows the front driver, front passenger and rear passengers to select independent temperature settings. In the 2005 Odyssey, the passengers in the rear seats can enjoy more liberal air conditioning controls than in the conventional model. For the rear, the independent automatic climate control system features a digital display for the temperature and fan. Those in the rear can independently select a temperature setting different from the front zones and it will be maintained automatically. The 5-step fan setting can also be controlled automatically or manually.

Audio Systems The Odyssey’s audio system provides a wide variety of features and options for each trim level. The LX models feature an AM/FM stereo radio with a CD player and an auxiliary input (four speakers, 120 watts). EX models add a six-disc in-dash CD (six speakers, 120 watts). Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls are standard on EX and above models. The audio system and the available Honda DVD Entertainment System can both be controlled by voice recognition on Touring models equipped with the Honda Navigation System with Bilingual Voice Recognition and Steering Wheel Mounted Controls.

Premium Audio System (Touring) The Touring model provides a premium audio system with a 360-watt amplifier and a total of seven speakers (including a subwoofer) in addition to the impressive features already found on EX models. For superb sound quality, the four front and rear speakers are a 17cm Kevlar- injected polypropylene mid-range speaker. The front tweeters use aluminum dome construction for enhanced high-frequency sound clarity. The compact, large capacity subwoofer is positioned under the front passenger seat. Active Noise Control (ANC) The 2005 Honda Odyssey uses advanced technology to create one of the quietest automotive interiors on the road. Models equipped with the leather interior (which includes some EX models and the Touring model) have Active Noise Control (ANC). The ANC system uses a microphone at the front of the vehicle interior to create “anti-noise” through the audio system speakers. More specifically, the audio system analyzes the sound waves entering the cabin, and then instantaneously creates an opposite sound wave (anti-noise) to cancel the unwanted noise. This helps reduce interior engine noise that may occur during certain cycles with the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system on EX with Leather and Touring models. The system also reduces road noise and numerous other external sound factors. The end result is a superbly quiet cabin typical of vehicles in the pure luxury class of automobiles. The system will not counteract voices inside the cabin whether desired or not.

Honda DVD Entertainment System with 9-Inch Display, Integrated Remote Control, and Wireless Headsets with Personal Surround Sound The Odyssey can be equipped with an available factory-installed Honda DVD Entertainment System for rear passengers. This multi-faceted system features a 9-inch wide screen LCD display (the largest factory-installed screen available in a minivan) that flips down from the ceiling at the push of a button for easy viewing. The extended capabilities of the system allow for either DVD, CD, radio, and auxiliary accessories (such as video games, VCRs or cameras) to be played in the rear seating areas through headphones while the front passengers listen to a different audio source. The DVD player can be conveniently controlled from three sources - the front audio system controls, the integrated wireless remote control (that stores near the LCD screen), or through voice activation on models equipped with the Honda Navigation System with Bilingual Voice Recognition. Additional audio and video input jacks allow for a wide variety of additional equipment ranging from camcorders to VCRs to game consoles - to be attached to the system. The system comes complete with two infrared (IR) wireless headphones and a wireless remote control as standard equipment. For convenient night use, the remote control is illuminated. The wireless headphones and auxiliary headphone jacks (in the third row) provide personal surround sound technology (a minivan first) to simulate a home theater audio experience. Two wireless headphones are included. A safety feature on the wireless headphone system prevents front row passengers from using the headphones. The wireless headphones are automatically activated when the earpieces are turned approximately 90 degrees (to be put on) and deactivated when the headphones are turned 90 degrees (to be taken off). Honda navigation systems have long been recognized for their simple, intuitive operation and extensive on-board database. The Honda Navigation System with Bilingual Voice RecognitionTM uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle’s DVD-based mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle’s location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

Turn-by-turn voice guidance is user selectable in either male or female voice and can be turned off at any time. Destination memory recalls current trip addresses and previous destinations; and calendar and calculator with English to metric number converter is standard. The navigation system can be controlled by the driver through either the voice recognition system, the touch screen display, or by the joystick on the instrument panel. The voice recognition system works when the “talk” button, located on the steering wheel, is depressed. When spoken to, the system recognizes commands such as “find nearest gas station,” or “find nearest ATM” and can also recognize street names. The voice recognition system has a vocabulary of approximately 637 commands and can recognize virtually any English or French -spoken accent. The 8-inch LCD display is a touch screen that allows the driver or front passenger to choose menu options or spell out a word (i.e. address, business name, place, etc.) through a touch-sensitive keypad. (The keypad can be set to alphabetical or a QWERTY typewriter-style layout.) Alternatively, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word. A matte finish is used on the display to reduce glare and smudging. When disc loading is selected for the 6-disc CD changer, the motorized screen conveniently tilts down to allow access to the CD loader located behind the screen. For data storage, the system uses a single DVD that contains information for the entire United States. Future updates to the navigation system can be made by installing an updated DVD (available on-line or by calling a toll free number). The available rearview camera is automatically activated when the vehicle is put in reverse. A color camera is located near the rear license plate and has a wide-angle lens. Multi Information Display (MID) To keep the driver informed of the vehicle's status and to access multiple electronic functions, the Odyssey Touring model has a bilingual Multi-Information Display (MID). This LCD dot matrix backlit screen and its push-button controls are located on the right side of the steering wheel. The MID is the interface for odometer/trip odometer, outside temperature, compass, trip computer with miles to empty etc., custom memory settings, and vehicle warnings. The Odyssey’s MID system works with the Touring model’s front and rear parking sensors to display when something might be in the path of the vehicle while parking. It can show when an object may be near the corners or directly behind the vehicle as a supplement to the driver’s visual check. The corner sensor also operates when the vehicle is driving at a low speed.

Multi Information Display The MID makes it easy to customize the function of many electronic features in the Odyssey. Custom settings include language, automatic door locking/unlocking, door unlock selection, keyless entry acknowledgement feedback (audible sound when doors are locked/unlocked), security re-lock timer, headlight auto-off timer and interior light dimming timer. To make it easy to track warnings (such as "Check fuel cap," or Maintenance Minder warnings) displayed on the MID, a memory feature lets you scroll through previous warnings for review. In total, a dozen user-configurable options exist, including: auto door lock and unlock, keyless lock acknowledgment, keyless relock timer, headlight auto off timer, interior light dimming time, front wiper action, outside temperature display and calibration, language selection, compass calibration, average fuel economy reset and memory seat link. Keyless Entry Keyless entry is standard equipment on all Odyssey models. LX models feature keys with built-in transmitters that have lock, unlock and panic buttons. EX and EX with Leather models add to the LX features with a programmable key fob that provides additional buttons for opening and closing the power sliding doors remotely. The fob can also roll down the first and second row windows by holding down the unlock button. The key can also perform the same function in the door lock cylinder, and roll up the windows, too, by turning to lock or unlock positions accordingly and holding. On Touring models, the key fob transmitter has an additional button that can raise and lower the power tailgate. Antitheft Features and Wave Key The new Odyssey is protected by a variety of anti-theft features. All models now feature the "wave" key for door and ignition and locks. This type of lock and key combination is much more resistant to copying and “picking” than conventional designs. Door and hood locks and their operating cables are now more thoroughly protected to prevent a “Slim Jim” or other jimmying device from being used to force entry. The engine immobilizer system used on the 2005 Odyssey shut down the engine's electronic control unit (ECU) has been further enhanced with the addition of a rolling code. 12V DC and 115V Power Outlets The Odyssey has three 12V DC power outlets – two in the front and one near the third row. The Touring model is equipped with a 115-volt power inverter (100 watts) in the third row for operating a wide range of equipment including game consoles, mobile phone chargers or similar

items. The power outlet features a rotating protective cover (similar to those used in a home for child-proofing) to enhance safety. HomeLink® Remote System The Odyssey EX and Touring model feature a HomeLink® universal remote system, built into the overhead map-light module. The system can be programmed with the codes of up to three devices, such as a garage-door opener, home security system, etc. Interior Lighting Significant attention has been paid to the interior lighting of the Odyssey from the placement of individual map lights to the ambient lighting on the centre console (standard on EX and Touring models). The console is illuminated during night driving by an overhead light that bathes the console in a subtle glow. The power window switches in all four doors are also internally illuminated. All totaled, as many as 8 interior lights exist on the top-of-the line models (7 on the LX). The individual map lights in the Odyssey are designed to illuminate an area large enough and bright enough so that a seated passenger can read by it. As the light continues to the floor, the beams overlap so that they illuminate the entire floor area, making it easier to see when getting in and out of the vehicle. A master switch, located on the centre console, can also control the lights. With it, the driver can switch the system on or off, or have it come on automatically when the doors are opened. Upon vehicle entry and exit, the lighting system features progressive illumination. When the door is opened, the instrument brightness turns on at about 10 percent. When the key is put in the ignition, the illumination ramps up to 100 percent. When the ignition is turned on, the illuminated instrument needles and related lights come on, indicating that all systems are go. After driving, the process reverses itself. The entire process is purposely subtle, but illustrates the level of detailed engineering built into the Odyssey’s interior. Integrated 2nd Row Sunshades Integrated second row sunshades are standard on Odyssey EX and Touring models. The retractable shades are integrated into the lower portion of the side doors and can be easily pulled up and secured via a hook on the upper portion of the window sash. The shades cover the majority of the glass and do not affect power window operation. Third row sunshades are available as an accessory. UV Resistant Privacy Glass All Odyssey models come equipped with UV resistance privacy glass with dark tinting on the windows in the second and third rows. The Odyssey’s glass filters Ultra Violet (U.V.) light that results in less interior fade over time, lower cabin temperatures on hot days and more efficient interior cooling. In addition to UV resistance, the second and third row windows feature deep-tinted privacy glass.

INTERIOR SAFETY TECHNOLOGY Overview Honda recently announced plans to apply advanced safety technologies to the full range of Honda and Acura products over the next several years in its “Safety for Everyone” commitment (see Overview section for full Safety for Everyone information). The goal of “Safety for Everyone” is to provide high levels of safety protection for all Honda and Acura customers and for all road users in Canada and the U.S., by applying Front Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags and Anti-Lock Brakes as standard equipment before the end of calendar year 2006. Furthermore, all Honda and Acura light trucks, including all SUVs and the Odyssey, will be equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and rollover sensors for side curtain airbag deployment before the end of calendar year 2006. The Odyssey is the first vehicle in Honda’s lineup to include all of the safety features of Honda’s Safety for Everyone commitment. Honda’s innovative new Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, offering enhanced occupant protection with reduced aggressivity toward other vehicles, will be applied to all new vehicle platforms in Canada and the U.S. and globally over the next six to seven years. The 2005 model Honda Odyssey minivan and 2005 Acura RL sedan will be the first U.S. models to carry this new technology. (The first Honda vehicle to feature ACE technology worldwide was the Honda Life, a minicar for the Japan market.) As a result of Honda’s “Safety for Everyone” commitment, the 2005 Honda Odyssey is equipped with the industry’s highest level of standard safety equipment for a minivan. In addition to the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure (see body section), the Odyssey interior provides the following active safety equipment as standard on every trim level:

Advanced Dual Stage, Dual Threshold Front Driver’s and Front Passenger’s Airbags; Driver’s Front Side Airbag and Front Passenger’s Side Airbag with Occupant Position

Detection System; Three-Row Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensors; LATCH child seat anchor system; Driver and Front Passenger Pre-Tensioning Seatbelts with Load Limiters; and Three-Point Seat Belts in All Seating Positions.

Three-Point Seat Belts All of Odyssey’s eight seating positions (seven seating positions on LX and Touring models) have three-point seat belts and head restraints. The front row seat belts are equipped with load limiters and pre-tensioners. Also, the front and second row seat belts are adaptable for passengers of various heights because they have adjustable shoulder belt anchors (in outer seating positions in second row). For center passengers, ceiling-mounted, retractable shoulder belts are mounted above the second row (EX and EX with Leather) and third row centre seats (all models). Advanced Dual Stage, Dual Threshold Front Driver’s and Front Passenger’s Airbags The Odyssey is equipped with dual-stage, dual-threshold supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags for the driver and front passenger. These airbags are designed to minimize the potential for airbag injury while providing head and chest protection for the occupants in the event of a

collision. This front airbag system features front passenger seat weight sensors and a driver seat position sensor designed to further enhance occupant protection. The Odyssey’s front airbags can deploy at one of two rates. Deployment of the driver’s front airbag takes into account the severity of the crash, whether or not the driver’s seat belt is fastened and the position of the driver’s seat. During a lower speed collision, the airbag inflators are triggered in sequence, resulting in overall airbag deployment with less initial force. The same sequence is also utilized regardless of collision speed if the driver’s seat is close to the full forward position. During a higher speed collision, if the driver’s seat is far from the full frontal position, both inflators operate simultaneously for full, immediate inflation. Airbag deployment on the front passenger’s airbag is regulated by crash severity, seatbelt usage as well as the weight of the occupant. Sensors under the seat gauge occupant weight and if the total weight on the passenger seat is less than the NHTSA-specified MVSS specifications, the airbag system will not deploy, minimizing the potential for injury to children (an indicator lamp on the instrument panel will indicate this situation). Similar to what is available on the driver’s side, the airbags are deployed at the speed appropriate to the speed and severity of the collision – slower for lower speed collisions, more quickly for higher speeds. The driver’s airbag is located in the steering wheel hub and the passenger’s airbag is located on top of the dash. As in all Honda vehicles, the front passenger’s airbag is designed to deploy upward toward the windshield and then back toward the occupant. This provides a large cushion to help protect the front passenger while reducing the likelihood of injury resulting from airbag deployment. Driver’s Front Side Airbag and Front Passenger’s Side Airbag with Occupant Position Detection

System

Like other Honda models, the Odyssey is equipped with seat-mounted side airbags to help safeguard the driver and front passenger from side-impact injury. An innovative occupant position detection system is used to assure that the passenger’s side airbag has a clear path for deployment. In the event a child (or a small-statured adult) leans into the deployment path of the side airbag, a seven-segment antenna system built within the backrest signals this condition to an electronic control unit (ECU) also located within the seat. The ECU then deactivates the side air bag from functioning and triggers a "SIDE AIRBAG OFF" indicator light in the instrument cluster. After the front occupant returns to a normal seating position, the side air bag module automatically resumes full-functional status. Three-Row Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensors For 2005, all three rows of occupants are protected by Honda’s new Three-Row Side Curtain Airbag with Rollover Sensor System, which is standard equipment on all Odyssey models – a first for the minivan segment. The side curtain airbags deploy from a module in the roof in the event of a sufficient side impact, providing an and significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll rate sensor, located underneath the front passenger seat, along with multiple G sensors determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly.

Like the other airbag systems in the Odyssey, the side curtain system utilizes sensors located in the front of the vehicle to determine the most appropriate timing and rate of deployment of the airbags in the event of a rollover. To provide the optimal level of protection for Odyssey occupants, extensive testing was performed to determine the most appropriate timing and rate of deployment in the unlikely event of a rollover. The system uses algorithms to continually evaluate the situation and determines whether a rollover is eminent. The system responds to many types of rollover “events” drivers could potentially encounter including the “curb trip rollover” which as its name suggests, results when one side of the vehicle hits a curb or like object; the “soil trip rollover” which can result when one side of the vehicles suddenly comes into contact with a different surface type, often involving a slight elevation change; and the “screw rollover.” This type of rollover is usually the steepest and fastest of the rollovers whereby the vehicle comes upon a sharp angle such as an embankment. The roll rate sensor and multiple G sensors determine the “scenario” and calculate the angle of roll and the speed of the vehicle in order to deploy the airbags at the correct stage for optimum protection. In the case of a rollover, the side curtain airbags on both sides of the vehicle will deploy. However, in the event of a sufficient side impact that does not result in a rollover, only the airbags on the impacted side of the vehicle will deploy. The airbag maintains full inflation for approximately three seconds after inflation to allow for the increased time duration of a rollover accident. Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) System The Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system is standard equipment on the second row captains chairs and on the center position of the third row. The LATCH system features built-in, ready-to-use anchors and tethers allowing compatible child safety seats to be installed without using the vehicle's seat belt system. Available Body-Coloured Front and Rear Parking Sensors An increasing number of consumers are seeking supplemental technology to assist in backing up and making sure that people or objects are not in the path of the vehicle. The Odyssey Touring model is equipped with parking sensors that indicate (through a visual and audible warning from the Multi Information Display) that something may be in the path of the vehicle. The parking sensors are integrated into the front and rear bumpers and are body coloured. The sensors can detect whether an object is directly behind, in front of, or to the right or to the left of the vehicle.

The Odyssey is the first North American application of Honda’s newly developed Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, a system that results in improved compatibility between vehicles of different sizes with significantly enhanced occupant protection and reduced aggressivity toward other vehicles in a collision. This body structure employs an innovative new front-end frame structure that reduces the potential concentrated force of an impact by dispersing and absorbing crash energy over a larger area. The design also helps reduce the potential for misalignment with the frame of the opposing vehicle whether it’s small or large. The Odyssey is the perfect platform for Honda to launch its Safety for Everyone commitments (see Overview) as the previous model already earns the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) highest ratings of five stars for frontal and side impact crash tests. Honda’s internal testing shows that 2005 Odyssey is expected to achieve or exceed the same results.

The Odyssey’s ACE body structure is configured for high energy absorption. In the event of a frontal collision, the body structure with its front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to prevent structural penetration while distributing forces evenly through multiple major load bearing pathways – and away from the passenger compartment. For comparison, a conventional body structure generally concentrates the loads from a collision through two pathways running longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame. In the ACE body structure for example, frontal impact force can be distributed from the front of the vehicle through the side sill, floor frame and A pillar in order to reduce the cabin deformation. Special gussets are used to help direct forces throughout the frame.

Four Ring Shell The Odyssey’s body is further reinforced by a four-ring safety cage. Consisting of a series of hoops formed by the underfloor crossmembers, the A, B, C and D pillars, and crossmembers in the ceiling, the four ring shell encircles the passenger compartment and provides protection in the event of a side impact or rollover.

Front Driver’s and Passenger’s Doors Construction The Odyssey’s front doors use triple-stage stopper construction for ease of ingress/egress in tight parking situations. The doors use a special construction that provides a solid feel and sound when closing. The doors feature side impact protection beams. Dual Sliding Doors with Power Windows and Available Integrated Sunshades New for 2005, the Odyssey is equipped with power windows in the second row dual sliding doors. The windows feature auto up and down functions. The second row window switches use the recessed push down/pull up design that further helps to reduce the risk of the window pinching an occupant. Honda Odyssey EX, EX with Leather and Touring models are equipped with dual power sliding doors. The doors can be opened from the outside, when the handle is pulled, or by the master switch on the instrument panel. A lockout switch, on the instrument panel, can disable the door’s automatic operation. The doors can also be independently operated with the keyless entry system. This allows the doors to be opened or closed from a distance of up to 9 m. Significant safety features have been built into the Odyssey’s power door system. If the door should encounter any resistance while closing, it will immediately reverse direction. New for 2005, a direct detection system uses sensors built into the rubber seal on the leading edge of the door that detects when an object is in the path of the door. The sensors use three closely spaced wires inside the doors’ rubber seal that can touch if contact is made to the outer edge of the seal. When the wires touch, that sends a signal to the doors operating system to reverse direction. The system is extremely sensitive and relatively gentle (reduced load for pinch detection). Additional enhancements to the power door system include a clutch system for reduced load requirements during manual operation. Also, the doors will not completely retract to the fully open position if the rear windows are down. This is a safety feature to prevent a person’s head or other body part (sticking out the window) from getting pinched between the front of sliding door and the door frame during automatic open operation. Integrated sunshades are standard on EX and above models. The retractable shades are integrated into the lower portion of the doorsills and can be easily pulled up and secured via a hook at the top edge of the window sash. The shades cover the vast majority of the glass and do not interfere with power window operation. As a safety feature, the dual sliding doors on all models each have side impact protection beam. Power Tailgate Odyssey Touring models feature a power rear tailgate that can be conveniently controlled from four sources: the key fob, the exterior handle (for manual opening), a switch mounted on the underside of the tailgate (for closing), and from a switch on the instrument panel. The tailgate can be manually closed at any time during open or close operation. As a safety feature, the tailgate has an auto detection system (identical to the power sliding door direct detection system) that will reverse direction in the event that something prevents it from closing or opening.

Refined Fit and Finish Attention to detail is one trait that helps set the Odyssey apart from the competition. Fit and finish details have been tightened for 2005 with improvements to gaps between body panels and exterior features. Items such as the A pillar, side mirror, wiper layout and the use of underfloor pans have all been designed to minimize air turbulence. These designs result in enhanced fuel economy and less wind noise. Other measures contributing to reduce wind noise levels include dramatically reducing the width of body seams, mounting glass flush with the surrounding body panels, and using double seals around all doors. NVH Countermeasures The redesigned Odyssey utilizes a wide variety of technology, construction and space age materials to reduce road noise to the lowest levels available in the minivan segment. The Odyssey has the following features that address NVH:

To maximize gains derived from the Odyssey’s stronger body, both the front and rear subframes of the new Odyssey have structural enhancements to improve ride and handling precision characteristics along with noise reductions. The points where the front and rear subframes attach to the body have rubber bushings, which help to isolate the effects of noise transmitted from road surfaces and bumps through the fully independent suspension. Lightweight Soundproofing Material The Honda Odyssey utilizes a new style of lightweight sound proofing material that reduces weight and absorbs more noise than traditional insulation. Traditional soundproofing material works by “insulating” the cabin from noise with a thick, heavy layer of foam padding (like carpet padding) on top of a layer of rubber meltsheet (and then adding an additional thin layer of meltsheet). The 2005 Odyssey still uses meltsheet, but the new soundproofing material is comprised of a much thinner layer of lightweight sound absorbing substrate that “absorbs” sound rather than “insulates” or “reflects” it. compared traditional soundproofing material while providing higher sound deadening performance. (See the next page for a detailed illustration of soundproofing technology.) Active Noise Control (ANC) Additional sound reduction is achieved through the Active Noise Control (ANC) system (on models with Variable Cylinder Management). See the Interior section for more detail on ANC.

Fuel System The 80 liter, fuel tank is molded of high-density polyethylene for low weight, freedom from corrosion and impact resistance. It is positioned immediately ahead of the rear wheels to help guard against collision damage. Corners of the tank are rounded and the inside of the tank is baffled to diminish the likelihood of sloshing-fuel noise. The polyethylene filler pipe and fuel lines are light, not susceptible to corrosion and resistant to fuel vapor losses. A high-efficiency fuel pump is housed inside the fuel tank. The fuel-filter is a lifetime design that never needs replacement. The Odyssey complies with all evaporative emissions, on-board diagnostics, and refueling vapor recovery requirements. The fuel vapor canister and filter are rubber mounted for noise isolation and protected against rock and debris damage by a deflection shield. Exterior Lighting The Odyssey headlamp design uses aggressive looking dual projector beam-style halogen lamps for front-of-vehicle illumination. The lamp assemblies feature a clear outer lens that wraps around the vehicle’s front corners and the running lamps and turn signals are housed inside. The

round inboard lamps are for high-beam illumination and the round outboard lamps are for normal driving. The halogen headlights offer class-leading performance, casting a beam wider and further than any other minivan currently on the market. Odyssey EX and above models feature an auto off. Odyssey Touring models provide a user-configurable option for “auto off” for the headlights, configurable through the Multi Information Display. In addition to auto off, the Touring model headlights also turn on automatically by using a sensor. Fog lamps are standard on Touring models and accessories on all other trim levels. The rear taillights feature a reflective inner-cube design as the background for the four lights and a reflector. The lenses are solid red brake and running lights, amber for turn signals. A large, rectangular back-up-lamp reflector provides extra illumination when backing up.

Global Light Truck Platform with Unit Body Frame Construction The 2005 Honda Odyssey uses a new generation of Honda’s Global Light Truck Platform that incorporates enhanced levels of safety (ACE body structure) with class leading rigidity and performance. The Global Light Truck Platform is engineered to balance the rugged traits of a light duty truck frame with high levels of safety, handling and fuel economy. The unit body frame construction is comprised of three main units – the front subframe, the main frame and the rear subframe – and those sections are integrated into the body construction. Independent MacPherson Strut Front Suspension The Odyssey’s independent front suspension is a MacPherson strut-type, with a large, forged lower wishbone arm that helps to feed suspension loads into the frame over a wide area. This, in turn, helps to minimize the transmission of road noise and vibration to the body and frame and also adds additional strength to the system. The springs are a low-rate, long travel type that effectively soak up bumps and road disturbances. The front suspension is designed so that the inside front wheel (when cornering) will assume a slight toe-out attitude for maximum contact between the tire and the road. When braking, both front wheels will assume a slight toe-out attitude. A bushing built into the front inner pivot of the lower control arm provides the necessary compliance for this feature. The result is quick linear steering response and straight line braking stability. The MacPherson strut front suspension incorporates a negative steering offset scrub radius which helps maintain straight line control on road surfaces with differing traction coefficients (e.g. a typical carpool lane when one tire is on the road shoulder and the other is on the pavement) along with maintaining a good contact patch for the tire during cornering.

Independent Double Wishbone Rear Suspension The Odyssey provides the ride and handling advantages of a double wishbone rear suspension, a setup commonly found on high performance vehicles and racecars for its superior wheel motion characteristics. The suspension uses a triangular control arm and a long rail-shaped trailing arm to connect the chassis subframe to the wheel. Enhancements to the rear suspension include larger bushings that disperse forces over a greater area and a floating subframe that is isolated from the body by rubber bushings. The geometry of the suspension now allows for enhanced suspension movement characteristics. The shock absorber is located so that it moves along the same direction as the tire stroke, thus is more efficient in absorbing shocks from the road surface and provides for better ride comfort. Additionally, toe-in compliance has been enlarged through the rear suspension transverse links, formed by the rear suspension and rear subframe mount, where they pivot at the wheel carrier. Any side pressure that may result from cornering, off-camber road or crosswind, causes the outside wheel to assume a slightly toe-in attitude. The resulting steer-effect helps to counter the roll-induced steer effect of the side force, so the Odyssey tracks straighter under these conditions. An additional benefit to the Odyssey’s suspension design is the compact packaging that provides a low and flat cargo floor.

The Odyssey's steering system is tuned for quick, linear, car-like response and sensitive feel – and the torque sensing, power steering assist is high for parking maneuvers and low at highway speeds. As cornering forces rise, understeer is mild and linearly progressive to accentuate predictability. This system has been tuned for optimal steering feel. The valve body incorporates a damper valve that improves firm steering feel at high speeds, and a kickback reduction valve that substantially reduces steering kickback when encountering bumps or objects in the road. A roller bearing in the steering shaft makes steering easier in parking situations. The turning diameter of the Odyssey has been tightened from 11.5 m to 11.2 m (curb-to-curb). Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)

Odyssey brake components are large in capacity to help handle heavy cargo and towing loads. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has four sensing and activating channels to detect a wheel on the verge of lock up. In the event this occurs, brake pressure is held, then reduced, to permit that wheel to regain traction before full braking resumes. The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system electronically regulates front-to-rear brake effort proportioning to help compensate for placement of cargo in the vehicle and maintain an optimum braking load on front and rear wheels for enhanced stopping characteristics. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with Traction Control

For enhanced control during acceleration, cornering, and sudden collision-avoidance maneuvers, the Odyssey is equipped with a 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system that works in conjunction with the drive-by-wire throttle and ABS systems. VSA enhances vehicle stability by applying brake force to each of the Odyssey's four disc brakes independently while also managing the throttle and ignition systems. An additional benefit is the limited-slip differential effect the system provides for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction.

Analyzing data that is constantly received from eight sensors monitoring speed, steering input and lateral G forces, the VSA system compares the driver’s control inputs with the vehicle’s

actual response. If the actual response is outside a predicted response range, VSA automatically intervenes with an appropriate corrective action. In the case of oversteer, VSA applies braking to the outside front and rear wheels to counter the unintended yawing effect. If understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside front and rear wheels and reduces engine power to help bring the car back onto the driver’s intended course. The VSA system in the Odyssey has been carefully calibrated to add handling stability and predictability with minimal intrusion to the driving experience. Its operation is designed to be transparent, so drivers may not even notice when VSA is working. Whenever the system is actively enhancing the vehicle’s stability, an indicator light flashes on the instrument panel. In addition, VSA’s stability enhancement and traction control can be turned off with a cockpit switch while still leaving the Anti-lock Braking System fully functional. Brake Assist The VSA system can also recognize emergency braking situations and provide braking assist when needed. When the driver uses the brakes strongly, a pressure sensor recognizes braking system operation beyond a specific value for pedal stroke and speed. Then, the VSA modulator pump assists braking pressure to increase braking force and shorten braking distance. This feature can be especially helpful when the driver is unable to press the brake strongly. Wheel and Tires The Odyssey features 16 x 7-inch wheels and 235/65 R16 tires on LX, EX, and EX with Leather models. LX models use Bridgestone Turanza WL42 all-season tires and the EX, EX with Leather and Touring models use Michelin ENERGY LX4 all season tires. The Odyssey EX, EX with Leather and Touring models have alloy wheels, and the Odyssey LX model has steel wheels with full wheel covers. The spare tire on all models is a compact size (T135/80D17) that is mounted flush inside the panel of the driver-side wall of the third row.

3.5-litre i-VTEC SOHC V-6 Engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) Technology Overview The Odyssey powertrain uses the latest innovations to achieve the highest levels of performance, fuel economy and low emissions in the minivan segment. Honda’s long and successful history introducing state-of-the-art engine technology continues with the introduction of Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) on select models and numerous other features for 2005. The Honda Odyssey's engine is an advanced 3.5-litre, SOHC, 24-valve, 60-degree, V-6, aluminum-block-and-head design that is compact, light and powerful. A wide variety of technologies have been engineered to provide 255 horsepower, a broad and flat torque curve, low emissions, high fuel efficiency, and instantaneous throttle response. Two engine configurations are available – one with a VTEC valvetrain and one with an i-VTEC valvetrain that includes cylinder deactivation. The VTEC valvetrain and on LX and EX models optimize cylinder filling efficiency across the engine's entire operating range. On Touring and EX with Leather models, an “intelligent” i-VTEC valvetrain automatically de-activates three of the six cylinders during cruising to enhance fuel economy. When full power is needed during acceleration and other situations, the engine operates on all six cylinders. Uniquely, Odyssey models with the i-VTEC valvetrain simultaneously provide the highest fuel economy with the most power and the longest driving range in the minivan segment. The Odyssey's engine also provides excellent environmental performance, complying with Tier 2-Bin 5 emission requirements. High-density catalytic converters are placed directly below the engine's cylinder heads in both banks, boosting performance during cold startups. A high-level of emission control performance is also aided with a third catalytic converter positioned downstream from the two high-density catalytic converters. To further enhance emission performance inside the engine, high-atomization multi-hole fuel injectors are used along with four air-fuel sensors that provide highly precise fuel control and help achieve nearly complete combustion. Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™)

Standard on all models, the Odyssey’s innovative Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) is one key to maximizing engine output across the engine’s full operating range. The high-rpm induction lobes of the camshaft provide additional valve lift to help increase peak horsepower. Ordinary engines have fixed valvetrain parameters – the same timing of valve lift and overlap whether the tachometer needle is struggling to climb out of the low-rpm range or screaming at the redline. The VTEC approach, however, has two distinct modes so that operation of the intake valves changes to optimize both volumetric efficiency (breathing) and combustion of the fuel-air mixture. In order to achieve the optimum volumetric efficiency in the lower portion of the engine's operating range, rocker arms are programmed to follow cam lobes that provide low lift and reduced duration (shorter time open with less valve lift). At 4600 rpm, the Odyssey's powertrain control module commands the VTEC system to switch intake valve operation to the high-rpm mode. In response, an electric spool valve opens to route pressurized oil to small pistons within the intake-valve rocker arms. These pistons then slide to lock the three rocker arms provided for each cylinder together. As a result, both intake valves follow a central high-lift, longer-duration cam lobe. The switching process takes place instantaneously and is undetectable by the driver. The extra lift and longer duration provide the added air and fuel the engine needs to produce high peak horsepower and a broader torque band. Instead of a peaky engine, the Odyssey has a powerplant that provides excellent performance at any engine speed. i-VTEC with Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM™) Honda's innovative VTEC technology has evolved once again: the i-VTEC engine (the “i” is for intelligent) in the 2005 Odyssey features a Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that switches between six- and three-cylinder combustion. When high output is required, such as during startup and acceleration or when climbing hills, the engine operates on all six cylinders to deliver superior performance. During cruising and at low engine loads, the system idles one bank of three cylinders, thus achieving outstanding fuel economy. Further, the idled cylinders remain sealed, alleviating the pumping losses associated with intake and exhaust and giving fuel economy a further boost.

Honda V-6 i-VTEC technology* = VTEC + VCM Variable Cylinder Management helps maximize fuel economy by making the Odyssey’s available i-VTEC V-6 engine effectively run on only three cylinders when the power needs are minimized, yet it can still seamlessly provide the full power of all six cylinders during acceleration or other high power situations. When full power is needed, i-VTEC instantly opens the valves and sends fuel to three more cylinders with output reaching as much as 255 horsepower. Honda’s VCM system allows for maximum performance and maximum fuel economy – two characteristics that rarely co-exist at this level of extremes. Other minivans may offer high fuel economy and others may offer engines tuned for horsepower, but only the Odyssey delivers class-leading levels of both.

VCM Operation The Odyssey’s i-VTEC V-6 engine (available on EX with Leather and Touring models) features a Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that improves fuel economy by idling three of the Odyssey’s six cylinders during cruising and deceleration. VCM deactivates the rear bank of cylinders by using the VTEC (Variable Valve-Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system to close the intake and exhaust valves while cutting fuel at the same time. The rear bank of cylinders was chosen for deactivation because the front bank is best positioned for cooling performance. Idling the rear bank also helps to maintain the temperature of the catalytic converter beneath the cylinder heads, helping to maintain optimum environmental performance. The Odyssey’s spark plugs continue to fire even when the cylinders are deactivated. This minimizes plug temperature loss and prevents fouling-induced from incomplete combustion during cylinder re-activation. Further, sparking in air alone results in higher voltages than in a fuel-air mixture because of the higher insulation resistance. Therefore, iridium-tipped spark plugs are used for their high resistance to wear at high voltages. i-VTEC VCM System Designed for Rapid Switching at Low Engine Speeds In a conventional VTEC system, hydraulic pressure pushes a single synchronizing piston, which is in turn pressed back by a return spring. The VTEC system locks the valvetrain’s rocker arms to allow additional valves to open and increase engine breathing. Such systems require relatively high engine speeds since hydraulic pressure is used to push the spring. VCM, however, demands switching at low rpm. This is achieved by creating a hydraulic circuit with two systems, each capable of providing the hydraulic pressure required to push the synchronizing piston in the required direction. This design thereby allows switching from six cylinders to three cylinders in low-speed ranges. To achieve responsive switching to six cylinders when the driver operates the accelerator pedal, the system employs a new three-way solenoid spool valve to control the oil pressure for switching. VCM monitors throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed, automatic-transmission gear selection, and other factors to determine if the vehicle is cruising or decelerating. During cruising and deceleration, VCM deactivates three of the cylinders on the rear bank of the engine. To further enhance control, the system also simultaneously determines whether engine oil temperature is suitable for VCM switching and whether catalytic converter temperature will remain in the proper range. While idling the cylinders, the system controls ignition timing, adjusts throttle position via Drive-By-Wire, and turns the torque converter lock-up on and off, thereby suppressing torque-induced jolting during the switch from six to three cylinder operation. The result is a smooth, seamless switch between three and six cylinder modes that is nearly unnoticeable to the driver. For cylinder deactivation operation, the synchronizing piston moves to isolate the valve-lift rocker arms from the deactivated cylinders’ rocker arms. The deactivated cylinder rocker arms are operated by zero-lift cams that deactivate the cylinders by closing the intake and exhaust valves. Engine Mounts Odyssey LX and EX models use a special liquid-filled engine mount and an Electronically

Controlled Mount (ECM) to help absorb vibration from its already smooth V-6 engine. Odyssey EX with Leather and Touring models (with

VCM) use an advanced Active Control Engine Mount system to counteract any vibrations.

Due to the inherent increase in engine vibration when VCM

has deactivated the rear cylinders, an Active Control Engine Mount system (ACM) is used to minimize the effects of engine vibration. The system uses sensors that alert the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to direct ACM actuators to move in synch with the vibration, thereby eliminating the vibration being transmitted to the passenger compartment. Additionally, an Active Noise Control system (ANC) works in cooperation with the ACM. An ANC controller with a microphone detects the booming noise associated with cylinder deactivation and instructs the audio system’s speakers to emit “anti-noise.” See the interior section for more information on ANC. Active Control Engine Mount (ACM)

Dual-Stage Induction System (i-VTEC Engine) Designed specifically for the Odyssey’s i-VTEC engine, the induction system works in concert with the valvetrain to significantly boost torque across the engine’s full operating range. Internal passages and two butterfly valves commanded by the powertrain control module are configured to provide two distinct modes of operation. The valves are closed at lower rpms. In this mode, the three cylinders on each bank draw air from only the nearer half of the manifold's internal chamber, or plenum. The volume of the plenum and the length of inlet passages are both tuned to maximize the resonance effect, wherein pressure waves are amplified within each half of the intake manifold at certain rpm ranges. The amplified pressure waves significantly increase cylinder filling and the torque produced by the engine throughout the lower part of its rpm band. Funnel-shaped intake ports – similar to those used on racing engines – are built in at the uppermost end of each intake runner to improve

air flow. Exhaust System A low-restriction, high-flow exhaust system is crucial to efficient power and torque production. The Odyssey features a high efficiency system that incorporates several key elements that work in concert with the engine’s uniquely designed cylinder heads to help boost performance, reduce tailpipe emissions and trim weight. Major system components include two close-coupled catalytic converters, a secondary underfloor catalytic converter, a centrally positioned, high-flow resonator and a silencer. The close coupled catalytic converters mount directly to the cylinder head to reduce light off time, thereby allowing the catalyst to begin cleansing the exhaust as soon possible. The catalysts, muffling element, and piping are all sized for high flow and low restriction. High-chromium stainless steel is used throughout the exhaust system for excellent durability. Linear air-fuel and oxygen sensors installed in each of the close-coupled catalytic converters make possible precise control of the air-fuel ratio. These sensors and the precisely controlled high-atomizing multi-hole fuel injectors help achieve almost complete combustion, for cleaner emissions. The result is compliance with Tier 2-Bin 5 emission requirements. ENGINE ELECTRONICS Drive-By-Wire Throttle System The Odyssey features an innovative drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle control system. This DBW system replaces a conventional throttle cable arrangement with an all-electronic system that senses the accelerator pedal position and relays that information to a computer. The computer then performs the actual throttle activation instantaneously. The Odyssey electronic throttle control system works by means of a accelerator pedal sensor, a throttle angle sensor, a control unit built into the power control module and a DC motor to control throttle opening and provide fail-safe throttle operation. This system allows for throttle control to be integrated into the VSA and VCM systems, and also incorporates the cruise control function. To improve shifting smoothness, the automatic transmission shifting has been enhanced, and the electronic throttle control system controls the throttle during transmission shifts. To optimize driving feel, accelerator pedal characteristics are calibrated to be smooth and linear during start up, and when driving on ice or other low traction surfaces, and more responsive during acceleration. During cruise control, throttle operations are smoothed out to maximize idled-cylinder operation. This not only enhances fuel economy but also helps eliminate unnecessary switching, making for a smoother ride.

Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) Fuel is delivered in sequence and timed to each cylinder's induction stroke by six injectors mounted on the lower portion of the intake manifold. The Odyssey features innovative orifice-type injectors instead of pintle-type injectors. These injectors optimize the fuel spray pattern, and improve fuel atomization for increased fuel mileage and reduced emissions. A 32-bit, 40MHz central processor unit (CPU) within the Odyssey's powertrain control module calculates injection timing and duration after assessing an array of sensor signals; crankshaft and camshaft position, throttle position, coolant temperature, intake manifold pressure and temperature, atmospheric pressure, and exhaust-gas oxygen content. The CPU controlling the Odyssey's Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI), VCM, VTEC valve train, dual-stage intake manifold, the drive-by-wire throttle, and the transmission also communicates with CPUs that regulate the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and meters, and interacts with the ACM. Direct Ignition and Knock Control Maintaining the correct ignition timing throughout all operating conditions is essential to producing maximum power, using fuel efficiently and minimizing emissions. A powertrain control module (PCM) examines various engine functions as well as a block-mounted acoustic knock sensor to determine optimum ignition timing. In the event the engine is supplied with fuel lower in octane than the specified unleaded premium, the PCM retards ignition timing as needed to forestall detonation. As a result, the engine constantly operates at the point of peak efficiency. Spark is supplied to iridium-tipped, long-life spark plugs by six coil units positioned directly over the plugs in the cylinder-head access bores. Smart Maintenance Tune-Up Intervals The new Smart Maintenance System allows the Odyssey to become an active participant in alerting its owner to pending service requirements. This feature takes the guesswork out of determining how severe or normal road conditions may affect oil service intervals by displaying the percentage of remaining oil life before the need for an oil change. Smart Maintenance also monitors driving conditions and prescribed mileage, and displays corresponding codes that indicate the need for tire rotation, air cleaner element replacement, automatic transmission service, a coolant change, and spark plug and timing belt replacement. This system anticipates soon-to-be maintenance needs and groups them together with those more urgently required. This allows an owner to take care of everything at one time and reduce their number of visits to the service department. The only maintenance necessary is routine inspections and fluid and filter changes. At 168,000 km, the valves should be adjusted, the timing belt should be replaced, the water pump should be inspected and the iridium-tipped spark plugs should be replaced. 5-Speed Automatic Transmission Overview The Odyssey features a compact 5-speed automatic transmission that utilizes a 3-shaft design layout. The SOHC VTEC V6 transmission provides both smooth startup and outstanding fuel economy when cruising at high speed. The SOHC V6 i-VTEC with VCM transmission makes use of a lower ratio for fourth and fifth gears, boosting acceleration during high-speed travel. These ratios expand the range of the three-cylinder mode that dramatically enhances fuel economy, thereby realizing both powerful acceleration and low fuel consumption. A lock-up torque converter is provided to maximize fuel efficiency. Torque-converter lock-up and shift timing are both managed by a PGM-FI ECU that maintains a communications link with the engine's CPU. fourth to third gear, making continuous fuel cutoff possible. The specially designed springs used for the lock-up dampers employed with the VCM system feature a low spring coefficient during three-cylinder mode, effectively absorbing changes in speed. Creative use of clutched idler gears permits the transaxle to provide five forward speeds with little more weight or bulk than a typical four-speed automatic. A one-way clutch is provided for first gear to smooth upshift quality. An extra-capacity transmission fluid cooler is offered with the Odyssey's optional tow package to maintain acceptable lubricant temperatures during heavy-load conditions. A direct-control strategy provides real-time pressure management of the transmission's clutches. Various safety and control strategies coordinate engine and transmission operation. For example, driveline shocks during up- or downshifts are minimized by momentarily reducing engine torque during the shift. In neutral and park, engine rpm is automatically limited to 5000 rpm. For driving through hilly terrain, a Grade Logic Control system monitors throttle position, vehicle speed, acceleration and deceleration to avoid hunting and excessive shifting. A lower gear is held for a longer-than-normal period to provide better climbing ability on hills and more engine braking on downhill grades. On i-VTEC models, the 2005 Odyssey is equipped with an intelligent cruise control system that works in combination with the transmission to provide downshifts from fifth to fourth or from fourth to third as required on downhill grades, making effective use of engine braking to control the vehicle’s speed. Towing The ability to haul pop-up campers, medium-sized boats, and recreational vehicle trailers can be a priority to some minivan owners. Ultimately, the engineers concluded that a casual or weekend towing capability was most appropriate for the Odyssey. Customer feedback helped set the towing limit at 1580 kg for trailers. The Odyssey's 1580 kg rating is calculated to include up to one passenger and their cargo. In support of safe towing, Odyssey’s tow hitch and other hardware needed for the job are factory engineered for dealer installation. The dealer-installed trailer hitch is a Class III receiver-type design that bolts on with no drilling, cutting, or bumper-cover modifications. An external transmission cooler and a separate power-steering fluid cooler is also included along with a harness to provide electrical power to trailer lights that plug into a connector provided at the rear of the vehicle.
