Administration

The Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was born in Springfield, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the start-ing Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fighter pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange officer flying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has commanded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in Georgia, Idaho, New Mexico, South Carolina, and South Korea. He served as inspector general for Pacific Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama.

As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Wash-ington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Command Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Acad-emy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieutenant general. He remained in that position until his retirement from active duty in November 2005. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has flown the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircrafts, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (’03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the curricu-lum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athlet-ics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson is in his seventh year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletics experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basket-ball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bull-dogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his first six years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robin-son’s skills as a proven fundraiser have already benefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the Southern Conference cross-country championships, the first two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis championships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served five years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach of the Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head bas-ketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Bucca-neers for five years, increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Confer-ence men’s basketball history to earn league coach of the year hon-ors at two different schools, and he ranks fifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson earned a bachelor of science degree in education and rec-reation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in educa-tion and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, W.Va. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and eight grandchildren.

2006-07 OutlookThe Citadel rifle team is looking to improve upon two straight third-place finishes in the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) in the 2006-07 season.

This is the first full season that the Bulldogs will have access to The Citadel Marksmanship Cen-ter. The range, which was completed in Febru-ary of 2006, hosted an SEARC match as well as the SEARC Champi-onships and an open sec-tional last season.

“We have new range facilities and up-graded equipment, but we also have a much more difficult schedule,” said head coach William Smith. “This sea-son will be our greatest challenge since returning to NCAA status.”

T h e Citadel is at-tempting to

replace former men’s and wom-

en’s team captains Evan Rishel and Amara Atella.

Among those returning for the Cadets

are sophomore Patricia Thibodeau and junior Kevin Medert. Thibodeau and Medert both finished in the top 20 at the SEARC Championships. Chris De-

Witt returns for his sophomore sea-son after being named the most improved shooter in the confer-

ence as a freshman.

Smith en-ters his eighth

season with the program and looks to guide The Citadel to another impressive finish in the SEARC. The Bulldogs have fin-

ished among the top three in the conference every season since rifle became a varsity sport again in 2001.

The 2006-07 schedule includes two SEARC and smallbore matches at The Citadel Marksmanship Center in No-vember and February. The Bulldogs will also host Wofford on Dec. 2 and a non-conference tri-match at the brand new rifle range against VMI and Air Force on Jan. 13. The inclusion of Air Force in the match ties in with Smith’s plan to compete against all of the ser-vice academies in the coming seasons. The SEARC Championships will be held Feb. 17 in Spartanburg, S.C., host-ed by Wofford.

Coach William Smith

Native Charlestonian William C. Smith enters his eighth season with The Citadel rifle pro-gram. Smith has made great strides with the team, moving it from a club sport back to an intercollegiate sport and overseeing construc-tion of a brand new, state-of-the-art indoor shooting range in The Citadel Marksmanship Center. Under the direction of Smith, the Bulldogs have finished in the top three of the Southeastern Air Rifle Conference (SEARC) every season since rifle became a varsity sport again in 2001. The Citadel has finished third in back-to-back sea-sons in the SEARC as they placed behind first-place Birmingham Southern and N.C. State in 2006 at the SEARC Championships held at the brand new Citadel Marksmanship Center in February. The Bulldogs also finished 2005 be-hind Birmingham Southern and N.C. State in the SEARC. The Bulldogs finished second in the SEARC in 2004, and ended the 2003 season as runner-up in the conference with five Aca-demic All-American shooters.

The Citadel captured SEARC Championships in 2001 and 2002 under Smith. The Bulldogs had only one loss in 2002 and the 2001 season marked the first time the team won the SEARC Championships since it was reinstated as a varsity sport. The Citadel’s previous title was in 1999 as a club team. Also in 2001, Smith led the Bulldog shooters to individual and team

NCAA sectionals, competing against teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. To help reach Smith’s goal of becoming an an-nual participant in postseason play, The Cita-del completed construction of The Citadel Marksmanship Center in February of 2006. The indoor shooting range is the premier fa-cility in the SEARC and contains 16 points for smallbore/center fire and air-rifles at 50 feet. The Bulldogs plan to bid on hosting the NCAA rifle championships in the future.

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is a unique public institution with the mission of educating principled lead-ers through its Corps of Cadets and Col-lege of Graduate and Professional Studies program.

Located in historic Charleston, S.C., The Citadel offers undergraduate and gradu-ate degrees in the humanities, business, math, science, engineering and education. The Citadel’s reputation for academic ex-cellence is reinforced by annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report that place The Citadel as number two in public col-leges granting master’s degrees in the South. The engineering school is nation-ally ranked at number 27.

With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the ser-vice academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The College of Graduate and Professional Studies, which is noted for Citadel excel-lence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,200 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the collge are com-plimented by a strong commitment to ser-vice and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intel-lect, has produced generations of gradu-ates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.
