Table of ContentsIt should be no surprise that the M.T.H. corporate symbolis a Standard Gauge Blue Comet steam engine. Over thepast 26 years, M.T.H. Electric Trains has cataloged over10,000 items in four gauges, and it all began with a col-lege student's dream of reproducing the tinplate toytrains of the 1920's and '30's. In 1980, Mike Wolf, alreadyan eight-year veteran of the model train industry, openeda mail order train business in a spare bedroom of hisfamily's Maryland home. Armed with a separate phoneline and a fancy new device called a FAX machine, Mikemanaged the inventory, processed and shipped orders,

worked train shows on weekends, and worked for Williams Reproductions, a fledg-ling model railroad manufacturer.

Three years later, Mike's Train House, as the business was called then, made the leapinto manufacturing by purchasing Jerry Williams' standard gauge tooling - financedin part by the loan of Mike's parents' life savings. The first M.T.H. catalog in 1983,printed in black and white, offered the No. 9, No. 381E, and No. 408 standard gaugelocomotives. Sheet-metal parts were stamped in Minnesota, shipped to Marylandwhere they were painted by a high-school friend of Mike's in his parents' garage, andassembled in the Wolf family's basement.

Mike's experience and expertise in manufacturing toy trains led to projects withLionel® and other O-Gauge model railroad firms, and eventually he began to devote

TINPLATE MEGASTATIONS

M.T.H. TRAINS ARE MORE FUNOnly M.T.H. offers you the choice of enjoying tinplate trains that perform just like new toys of eighty years ago, or updated with moderntechnology. Many Tinplate Traditions locomotives are offered in both Traditional and Proto-Sound® 2.0 configurations.

Traditional versions don't just look like the pre-war originals; they operate like them, too. Traditional locomotives feature open-frame AC motors and mechanical E-units (reverse units) for operators who want to recreate the full tinplate experience - com-plete with buzzing E-units, growling motors, and the smell of ozone in the air!

Proto-Sound®

2.0 versions feature the same accurate, nostalgic appearance on the outside but the latest M.T.H. technologyinside. The complement of Proto-Sound® features offers today's tinplate operator more fun than a child of the 1920's or '30'sever dreamed of:

Great smoke: Our steam engines feature fan-driven ProtoSmoke, the most powerful smoke system in the hobby.

Speed control and slow speed capability: Original Tinplate locomotives often had two speeds: fast and faster. M.T.H.locomotives feature Proto-Sound® 2.0, our unique sound and control system that allows our engines to throttle down to a slowcrawl, highball down the main line, or maintain any speed in between. The Locomotive Speed Control built into Proto-Sound®

2.0 acts like the cruise control on a car, keeping your train moving at the speed you select, regardless of hills and curves.

Synchronized chuff and puff: Like a real steam engine, M.T.H. steamers feature puffs of smoke and steam chuffsounds synchronized with the drive wheels. Better than any other toy train, an M.T.H. locomotive portrays the drama of a steamengine s-l-o-w-l-y chuffing and puffing as it pulls out of a station and gets up to speed.

Vivid engine sounds: Proto-Sound® features digital recordings with CD-quality playback. Press the transformerwhistle/horn button to hear the wail of an electric locomotive horn or the melody of an authentic steam whistle. Press the bellbutton to alert passengers to your trains arrival or departure. And steam chuff sounds vary automatically depending on howhard your engine is working.

Station sounds: Proto-Sound® passenger engines offer Passenger Station Proto-Effects, a complete arrival and depar-ture sequence that you can activate from your transformer. Freight engines include Freight Yard Proto-Effects, a symphonyof freight terminal sounds.

Remote uncoupling: Our O-Gauge Proto-Sound® steam locomotives offer remote uncoupling anywhere on your layout, controlled from your transformer. The opening of the coupler is accompanied by the hiss of air hoses parting and the clank ofthe coupler knuckle opening.

himself to manufacturing full time. In 1993, M.T.H. Electric Trains introduced its ownO-Gauge line with a scale-detailed diesel, and followed that up with dozens of real-istic diesel, electric, and steam locomotives that had never been offered to the Ogauge market. But while the scale-detailed product lines have continued to grow byleaps and bounds, we have never forgotten our tinplate roots. Today M.T.H. is the onlycompany in the world offering a full line of Standard Gauge and O-Gauge trains thatfaithfully reproduce the magic of the pre-war tinplate era.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS TINPLATE?

Popular from the early twentieth century until the beginning of World War II, tinplatetrains were the product of an era when toy trains indeed looked like toys, and proto-type accuracy was less important than artistry and bright colors. Like the originals,M.T.H. Tinplate Traditions models are made of stamped and die-cast metal and fin-ished in bright metal plating and shiny baked enamel paint enabling you to enjoythe same excitement that a child felt when receiving these toys as a holiday or birth-day present seven or eight decades ago.

Tinplate Traditions trains come in two sizes: O-Gauge and Standard Gauge, which isalmost twice the size of O-Gauge and peaked in popularity in the 1920s and 1930s.

#1134 Ives Standard Gauge Steamer

Chrome - #1134 Ives Standard Gauge Steamer 10-1259-1 w/Proto-Sound® 2.0 $899.9510-1259-0 Traditional $899.95

This sleek steamer defines the quiet elegance of the TinplateTraditions line. The Ives #1134 is one of the largest Standard Gaugesteam locomotives ever. The 1134 was patterned after the Baltimore& Ohio's President Washington 4-6-2 Pacific but the wheel desig-nation chosen on the model was 4-4-2, to enable it to negotiateStandard Gauge curves.

The styling of the engine captured the very essence of Americansteam engines, but the lack of purity in the castings of the originalIves releases threatened the lifespan of the beautifully crafted loco-motive. With its stamped steel body, baked enamel finish and metalwheels and axles, durability is not a problem for this M.T.H. model.

Today, the 1134 returns to M.T.H.'s Tinplate Traditions lineup andsports, just beneath the graceful lines of the tinplate boiler, theexcitement of Proto-Sound® 2.0, whose revolutionary electronicscontrol a smooth-running chassis capable of running at just a fewscale miles per hour. Cracking open the throttle and bringing thelocomotive forward releases the first blasts of smoke from theengine's stack, accompanied by realistic chuffing sounds. As thelocomotive picks up speed, one notices that each huge puff ofsmoke is timed to the driver's revolutions. The wail of the whistle andthe clang of the bell further stimulate the senses, and the flash andcolor of yesteryear are made even more exciting by the addition ofProto-Sound® 2.0.

Pair this distinguished steamer with a matching 418 SeriesPassenger Set by M.T.H. Each car boasts operating metal latch cou-plers, beautiful metal trim, and all-metal construction.

#392E Standard Gauge Steam EngineWith the exception of the venerable 400E, standard gauge's largeststeam locomotive is the mammoth 392E. First produced in 1932, the392E roars to life again as part of the 2006 Tinplate Traditions lineup.

Evoking memories of yesteryear while employing today's technology, the 392E may just become one of the most popular steam engineswe've ever produced. Available in two traditional paint schemes andfour railroad-inspired schemes, our 392E offers operators and collec-tors a choice between a contemporary Proto-Sound® 2.0 drive train ora traditional version outfitted with an AC motor and mechanical E-unit.

Comtemporary versions come complete with all the features youexpect to find in a Proto-Sound® 2.0-equipped locomotive, includingsynchronized puffing smoke, full digital sound, locomotive speedcontrol for incredibly realistic operation regardless of load or terrain, and a bevy of operating features not available in any other manufac-turers tinplate models.

Like all Tinplate Traditions locomotives, the 392E closely models theoriginal of yesteryear. The boiler, tender, and running gear are pro-duced entirely from stamped metal components. Painted surfacesare decorated with high-gloss enamel paint and sport a fit and finishnever seen on original models.

Of course nothing complements the 392E better than a beautiful setof matching passenger cars, each hand-assembled entirely from all-metal components.

In the late 1920's the Ives Corporation declared bankruptcy and founditself taken over by its two major competitors. By the early 1930's, onlyone of the takeover firms remained in control of the Ives tooling and hadbegun incorporating Ives products into its own product lineup. Thesewere known as the "transition" years and lasted until 1934, when theIves name ceased to appear on tinplate cars and locomotives.

One of the most famous and collectible of the transition era trains wasthe 1694 Electric locomotive of 1932. This 4-4-4 locomotive headed upa 3-car 1616 passenger consist from original Ives molds. Sporting abeige cab and maroon roof and chassis, the locomotive and cars werenever produced again. In fact, the original matching production run ofcars, which included the 1695, 1696, and 1697 cars, was limited to just2,600 sets. Released during the height of the Great Depression, thecars and engines didn't sell well, and according to Greenberg's PeterRiddle, were eventually sold as close-out sets in Canada, Great Britain, and other foreign markets.

Now for the first time since a non-powered reproduction was releasedin the early 1970s, tinplate O-Gauge fans have a chance to obtain oneof the rarest trains ever produced, with our all-new Tinplate TraditionsIves 1694 Set. Outfitted with Proto-Sound® 2.0, these locomotives andtheir matching cars will quickly become the pride of any tinplate collec-tion, thanks to their flawless fit and finish and unique operating features.

Available in the classic beige and maroon scheme or two optionalschemes designed to match earlier 1616 original passenger car releas-es. M.T.H. is proud to resurrect the Ives Nameplate ensuring the TinplateTraditions 1694 will become one of our most popular reproductions.

The No. 256 was the largest O-Gauge electric produced during thepre-war era and the only O-Gauge locomotive of that time to includetwo motors. In fact, not until the die-cast GG-1 electric appeared in1950 was another O-Gauge engine equipped with two motors.

The development of the 256 in 1924 was a response to the success ofthe Ives Corporation's wide-gauge products. The inclusion of "twin"motors was a gimic that was, however, overshadowed by Ives' devel-opment of the first automatic reversing unit that same year.Nonetheless, the 256 proved resilient and remained a popular toy trainuntil its last year in 1930. During its heyday, the locomotive cameequipped with both spoked and solid disc wheels, but appeared onlyin orange livery.

Making its introduction to the Tinplate Traditions lineup, our No. 256Electric sports the same details as the original and a fit and finish thatperhaps eclipses that of its predecessor. In addition, the locomotiveis equipped with two precision flywheel-equipped motors and comesoutfitted with the fun and excitement of Proto-Sound® 2.0.

Unlike the original, the Tinplate Traditions No. 256 will be available inadditional colors to complement matching 710 series passenger cars.

Standard gauge steam engines like the 384 were not so muchscale models of real locomotives, but cartoon-like caricatures:wildly oversized drivers, bright brass or nickel trim, colorful, gleaming paint, and a cast iron frame topped by a sheet metalboiler and cab. Our Tinplate Traditions Jersey Central set repli-cates the magic of the tinplate trains that gladdened the heart ofmany a child in the early decades of the 20th century.

The bright colors of this set are inspired by Jersey Central nametrains like the Blue Comet, which sped vacationers along the NewJersey shoreline in the early 20th century. Thanks to Proto-Sound®

In many respects, the No. 384 is the quintessential toy steamerowned by thousands of boys in the early twentieth century: wildlyoversized drivers, bright brass or nickel trim, colorful, gleamingpaint, and a cast iron frame topped by a sheet metal boiler andcab. Our Tinplate Traditions 384 Chessie Set replicates the startersets that gladdened the heart of many a child in the earlydecades of the 20th century. The bright colors of this set, howev-er, are inspired by the Chessie Steam Specials run for railfans inthe late 1970s.

Thanks to Proto-Sound® 2.0 electronics, our 384 steamer deliverssmoother operation than any original Standard Gauge locomo-tive, as well as huge plumes of puffing smoke timed to the dri-ver's revolutions and a clanging bell and wailing whistle guar-anteed to delight children of all ages. Our replica of the 384 istrailed by two passenger cars decorated with bright metal trimand colorful baked enamel paint.

Even model train manufacturers recognized that not all travelers got to their destinations by rail.Consequently, several "transportation toys" debuted early in the history of model railroading andwere marketed to tinplate model railroaders as accessories for their layouts.

The No. 85 Race Car Set of 1912 - 1916 was the forerunner of the slot car era of the 1960s. Twotinplate racing cars, featuring rubber tires and cast driver and mechanic figures, sped around atwo-lane oval. Powered by a standard AC transformer, the cars would zip around the track withpickups sparking and motors whining.

The No. 85 set returns to life in the Tinplate Traditions line and can be expanded with additionalstraight and curved sections of track. This limited-run item is a must for any collector looking torecreate the full range of tinplate products offered in the early years of the last century.

One of the most unique connections to the tinplate era and U.S.industry can be found in the form of a tinplate toy monorail sys-tem that was manufactured in the late 1920s by Leland Detroit, acompany headed up by men who helped found Cadillac andLincoln Motor Company.

That a car manufacturer had a hand in the development of thisunique tinplate set is interesting enough. That the manufacturerintroduced the world to both Cadillac and Lincoln, two of themost well-known luxury automobile nameplates in the U.S., iseven more fascinating.

The original 3-car monorail set operated on 6 to 12 volts AC fromany common toy train transformer and featured a single motorthat was mounted above the powered car. The other cars were

unpowered, but all shared the same body stamping tools and allutilized bayonet interior bulbs, the first toy trains to do so.Reversing direction was facilitated by a hand reverse lever. Thetrack itself was composed of parallel rail sections attached towire hangers. Each hanger was inserted into a cast iron redbase.

M.T.H.'s Tinplate Traditions Leland Detroit Monorail captures theessence of the original 3-car monorail set and can be purchasedin a Traditional version with the hand reverse lever or aContemporary version fully equipped with Proto-Sound® 2.0.Whichever you choose, the bright shiny colors and durable tin-plate construction will bring a long missing touch to any tinplatelayout.

Run A RailroadThere is a new way

of controlling modelrailroads today that

you've got to see tobelieve. It's called DCS (for

Digital Command System) and it's themost revolutionary product to hit model railroading

since locomotives first became equipped with sound!

Unlike traditional or conventional means of operating amodel railroad, command systems allow the user to inde-pendently control each engine even if other engines are onthe same track at the same time. The concept has beenaround since the early 1990's, but only DCS makes it sim-ple and easy to use thanks to its state-of-the art technol-ogy and intuitive interface.

Upgrading to DCS unlocks more features than youll find in anyother command control operating system features that arefactory-installed in every Proto-Sound® 2.0 train set locomotive.Heres just a partial list of what DCS offers:

WIRELESS HANDHELD THROTTLERun your whole railroad locomotives, accessories, everything from one or more DCS handheld remotes. An LCD screenindicates which engine youre controlling and its current speed, adjustable in one-scale-mile-per-hour increments. Programengines and accessories on the same screen. For nighttimeoperation, turn on the screens backlight.

COMMAND CONTROLOperate up to 99 DCS-equipped engines independently at thesame time on the same electrically continuous track usingone or several DCS wireless handheld remotes. When you haveguests, give each visitor a DCS handheld and let them controltheir own engine. Just like the prototype, you can double-headlocomotives, add or drop helper engines, or bring a train into thestation with a mainline engine and then have a switcher breakup the consist.

PROTO-SOUND® 2.0 ENGINE SOUNDSDCS offers individual control of dozens of sounds built intoevery M.T.H. locomotive. Rev the diesel motor up manually

before moving your train. Activate auxiliary sounds such assteam letoff and crew conversations. Whistle, bell, andsteam chuff or diesel prime mover sounds even have inde-pendently adjustable volume control.

TRAIN SOUNDSAdd ambience to your railroad with the variety of trainsounds built into Proto-Sound® 2.0. The DCS handheldgives you access to effects such as wheel clickety-clack,coupler opening sounds, and the Doppler effect of a trainpassing by. DCS also offers one-button activation of thePassenger Station or Freight Yard Proto-Effects built intoevery Proto-Sound® 2.0 locomotive.

SMOKE CONTROLAdjust the smoke intensity for a steam or diesel engine at anytime from the DCS remote.

CONSTANT LIGHTINGBecause DCS operates with a constant voltage on the rails (mostoperators use 18 volts), engine, caboose, and passenger car lights

are always on at a constant intensity. No more lights-out when a passenger train arrives at a station!

PROGRAMMABLE OPERATIONRecord up to 90 minutes of DCS speed, direction, and sound commands as a program that yourengines can repeat on demand. Use this feature torun trains automatically on one part of your railroadwhile you manually control another area.

UPGRADABLE SOFTWAREUnlike any DCC or any other command system,DCS is designed to be upgradable over theInternet. The latest software can be downloadedto any DCS system ever made, so new featurescan be added and your investment will notbecome obsolete.

TMCC® COMPATIBILITYAdd a Lionel® Command Base to your DCS systemand you can run engines equipped with TMCC®

(Lionels TrainMaster® Command Control) side-by-side with DCS engines - all from the DCS handheldcontroller. If you prefer, you can even use a LionelCAB-1® handheld to control TMCC engines at thesame time youre controlling Proto-Sound engineswith the DCS controller.

LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE TUNES WITH PROTO-CASTDCS is the only command control system thatlets you hook up any audio source and play yourfavorite music right through the train!

BE YOUR OWN DISPATCHERWith DCSs built-in remote microphone, real-timeradio dispatch calls are just a button push away.

COMMAND CONTROL EXPLAINED

In conventional operation, an AC or DC transformervaries track current to adjust engine speed anddirection. Command systems such as DCS, how-ever, put a constant voltage on the track (around 18volts for DCS) and vary speed by telling eachengine how much of that voltage to use. Commandcontrol allows different engines to do different things- like run at different speeds, go in different direc-tions, or make different sounds - even when they areon the same track.

In the DCS system, commands such as speed, direction, and sound control are sent as radio sig-nals from the handheld throttle to a TIU (track inter-face unit). The TIU translates those radio signals intodigital information that is sent through the rails andpicked up by a receiver in the appropriate engine -telling it to go, for example, 37 miles per hour, blowthe whistle, smoke more heavily, or any other com-mand. DCS locomotives can also send informationback to the handheld to let the operator know whatthey're doing.
