To embrace technology : to work for the better use of the technol- ogy to help aid our communication and opportunities to share with one another. So I would like to add one more thing to my framework: Appreciation. Appreciation for where we’ve been as an organization and where we are headed and the deep appreciation for so many of our members that give back to the organization not only as e-board members, but as committee members, program presenters and volunteers. Nothing we offer programmatically as an organization is going to top any- thing that each of you can do for one another. Our strength is our people and our participation as members is para- mount. Start small, introduce yourself to someone new. Go big, join a committee or volunteer to host a meeting or confer- ence. Just get involved; sharing what makes you great, will make us all better professionals. I’m happy to be able to serve as your next president and appreciative of this great opportunity. It is an honor to be able to give back to an organization that I have grown up in and that has given me so much. Thank you, safe travels and I’ll be happy to see all of you throughout the coming year and at the 2007 Annual Conference at Castleton State College. THE NEACUHO NAVIGATOR

TERRI’S PLAN FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR

While I was getting ready for this conference, my dad called and although my parents are finally past the “when are you going to graduate/what are you doing this summer” phase but they still aren’t sure what exactly I do.

So I talked to him about the confer-ence and the sessions and the meetings, and told him that I was going to give a speech and he perked up and said, “oh you’re the keynote speaker?”

And I said “no, I’m just going to become the president and needed to say a few words.”

Next question: “oh, do you get paid?” “Nope.” “So you don’t get paid? This whole time, the travel and sessions and the meetings, you don’t get paid?” “No Dad, it’s volunteer; pretty cool huh?” I’m not sure that he got it. But I do, I do it for the love of NEA-CUHO.

When I ran for president elect and wrote my statement for the position, I had 3 items that I thought would be the framework of my presidency. I vowed:

Efficiency: to streamline and communicate all NEACUHO processes with an eye to-ward spending more time on content than procedure Continuity and Planning: to make deliberate, mindful plans and follow the work our predecessors have made. To embrace technology: to work for the better use of the technol-ogy to help aid our communication and opportunities to share with one another.

In my statement I also wrote that “one of my core beliefs is that NEA-CUHO’s biggest strength is its mem-bers. As professionals, we bring a wealth of knowledge, commitment and collegiality to the table that is un-matched in any other organization.”

Yes, the secret of our association is the people and the ability to get so much help, support and care but it shouldn’t be a secret.

So I would like to add one more thing to my framework: Appreciation. Appreciation for where we’ve been as an organization and where we are headed and the deep appreciation for so many of our members that give back to the organization not only as e-board members, but as committee members, program presenters and volunteers.

Nothing we offer programmatically as an organization is going to top any-thing that each of you can do for one another. Our strength is our people and our participation as members is para-mount.

Start small, introduce yourself to someone new. Go big, join a committee or volunteer to host a meeting or confer-ence.

Start spreading the news… the 2006 annual conference at NYU was

inspiring and energizing. Approximately 300 NEACUHO members were able to

attend the various workshops and networking events, including amazing night

on the town events that gave those of us who aren’t city folk a big bite of the Big

Apple. This newsletter is a simple, little souvenir commemorating the

conference and the folks who made it happen. Of course, the 2006-2007

academic year is just a New York minute away, so of course we have plenty of

information on upcoming NEACUHO events and opportunities.

Have a wonderful semester,

ACUHO-I EASTERN DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE UPDATE

NEACUHO Navigator Summer Edition 2006 Page 11

Dear NEACUHO, It is my pleasure to submit this first report to you as the new ACUHO-I Eastern District Repre-sentative (EDR), having taken over the role from your own Bob Jose of Northeastern University in June. It is certainly an honor to follow in the foot steps of other previous NEACUHO mem-bers who were EDR, such as Bob, Tom Ellett and Valerie Randall-Lee. The role of the EDR is to be the connection between ACUHO-I and my assigned regions, specifically NEACUHO, MACUHO (Mid-Atlantic) and ASRA (the United Kingdom housing organization). It is my hope to provide an update in each NEACUHO Newsletter about what is going on with ACUHO-I that may be relevant to NEACUHO members. For those of you who were able to make the Annual Conference and Exposition in Atlanta in June, I hope you had as enjoyable a time as I did. It was great to see many of you at the Re-gional Reception – many thanks to Terri Panepento and her counterpart in MACUHO, Jenn Thorpe, for setting this up and allowing for members of both regions to meet and mingle. It was also nice to see a number of NEACUHO folks present programs at the conference, from the Region’s Best program on students from poverty by Joshua Lawrie from Syracuse Unievrsity, to a host of other programs including those presented by folks from multiple regions. For those of you who presented at NYU this summer, I would urge you to think about submitting your program for consideration by the ACUHO-I Program Committee when they issue their Call for Programs for the Annual Conference and Exposition in Seattle in July, 2007. It was also great to see that a students from NEACUHO was able to participate in the STARS College. This program brings under-graduate students to the ACUHO-I Conference site a couple of days before the conference starts to get an in depth immersion into what the housing profession is all about, including mentoring by a senior housing officer. Many of the attendees are then able to stay on and participate in the actual conference and spend time volunteering in many aspects. Congratulations to Jeremy Foskitt of Ply-mouth State University for being selected in a competitive process for this opportunity to experience what will hopefully be a future career choice for him. If you know of students who you think would benefit from this program, please look for nomination informa-tion during the coming year and encourage them to apply! ACUHO-I is making a very determined effort to become more strategic in its efforts in order to maintain its place as the preeminent professional association dedicated to improving on campus residential experiences for students and advancing the field of higher education. Briefly, here are a few of the things that ACUHO-I and the ACUHO-I Foundation are working on – more information on these will be shared in future newsletters:

• Communications – the Talking Stick (the ACUHO-I Newsletter) has been totally revamped and a brand new web page will be launched this fall.

• Placement – ACUHO-I and NASPA have agreed to partner on a spring placement event, to be called The Placement Exchange. The first event under this new arrangement will occur in Boston in 2008, just prior to the NASPA Conference, but registration at the NASPA Conference will not be required (but is highly encouraged) for participation in the placement service. Look for more information about this early in 2007.

• Continuing Education/Certification – even though ACUHO-I provides its members with many professional development op-portunities, it is clear that many more could be instituted to serve various members of the profession. A staff position has been added to work in this area, along with a committee of members, and their efforts will begin to take shape in the near future.

• Internationalization – while there has been an “I” in ACUHO-I for some time, what this means to the Association is just now being studied in depth for the first time. More organizations are choosing to affiliate themselves with ACUHO-I, but how the Association provides services to members around the world and it various languages is a daunting task that must be approached carefully.

• 21st Century Project – The Foundation, in conjunction with many member institutions and other partners, has launched a very ambitious endeavor to define what campus housing should be in the 21st Century. The 21st Century Project is a multi-phased

initiative leading to the construction of a new, state-of-the-art residential facility for colleges and universities. In addition to creat-ing one or more prototype residential facilities on several campuses, the project will assist colleges and universities in designing new residential facilities that reflect the ever-changing roles that residences play in the collegiate experience. Preliminary results are available, but much more work is yet to be done to flesh out all the pieces of this very important undertaking for the profes-sion of campus housing.

It is important to note that membership in NEACUHO does not make you a member of ACUHO-I. While both organizations have very similar goals and objectives regarding housing on college and university campuses, they are separate entities with sepa-rate membership requirements. If you are not sure if your in-stitution has been a member of ACUHO-I in the past, please check with your CHO. For all institutions, the process for re-newing a membership for 2006-2007, or for becoming a mem-ber for the first time, is now underway. For more information, go to the web page at www.acuho-i.org. If you have any questions about what ACUHO-I is, what initiatives we are working on, or how you can get more involved, please feel free to contact me at 610-436-3307 or at [email protected]. If I don’t have the answer for you, I’ll be sure to connect you with the person who can help you out. I hope to see many of you at the NEACUHO Conference at Castleton State College next summer, if not before.
