As we all enjoy this beautiful spring weather, I am looking forward to the end of tax season and hitting the road to visit all of you at your spring and summer projects. My calendar is already filling up for May, so if you have anything that you might want me to come out to, please invite me soon. I am so looking forward to getting out of the office and getting out to see all of you!

The Pennsylvania Jaycees joined Jaycees from all over the nation to celebrate the 2006 accomplishments of the US Jaycees in St Louis, Missouri. Many of you received recognition in St. Louis – Congratulations for all of your hard work in 2006! Past President Kim will fill you in on the details later in this newsletter.

I arrived in St. Louis just in time to represent you at the first 2007 US Jaycees’ Board of Directors’ Meeting. There are no current bylaw or policy changes, but we received a lot of information that I want to share with you now.

Marketing Kits were debuted at this meeting. These are geared towards corporate recruitment and look like a wonderful tool that you may want to take advantage of. Order forms are available on the US Jaycees’ website. When ordering a reasonable number of these packets, they are provided to you free of charge!

The US Jaycees are also offering chapters the opportunity to provide them with a custom page that they will have printed on glossy paper in color (similar to a magazine page) for an extremely low price. The US Jaycees will pick up half of the cost if your chapter is interested. Please let me know if you have an interest and I will forward additional information to you.

The PA Jaycees website is now being hosted by Junior Chamber International. Our new web address is www.jci.cc/pennsylvania. We have only loaded minimal information to date, but we will be building on this site as the year moves forward. A link to this site is also now located on our old site. If you have an idea for something that you would like us to add, please send me your suggestions.

First Quarter Certifications:It’s hard to believe that we are reaching the end of the first quarter. We want to recognize your 1st quarter accomplishments, but we need to know what you have been up to in order to do this. Please send your first quarter certifications to Pat Cloonan. You should have received a copy of the 2007 certifications guidelines in your January/February newsletter. You can also find the 2007 certifications guidelines in the documents tab on our website mentioned above. Please participate and let us know what you are doing in your chapters and across your communities!

Join the Myerstown Jaycees as they host the Pennsylvania Jaycees for our May State Conference! Come out for some great training & fun with your fellow Pennsylvania Jaycees.

From the Desk of:Senate Vice President

Hello from the PA Senate!

I heard the following story and thought how appropriately it explains our Jaycee chapters. We as Jaycees and Senators are here to make a difference. We as Jaycees and Senators can and do take the time to make a difference in the lives of those in our community. We are here to reconnect to our communities and chapters, to help make memories of a lifetime, to give back where we are able. To show humanity where it is lacking to give encouragement where it is needed. That is what we do because we are Jaycees!I hope you enjoy this story and thank you for your time,

Yours in Jaycee Spirit,Jackie CorneliusPA Jaycee Senate Vice-PresidentSenator #63011

WAY TO GO! You all make Pennsylvania proud!

Subject: Two ChoicesWhat would you do?....you make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?"

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. "I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child."

Then he told the following story:

Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?"  Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if

Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."

Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth

Page 3: 2007-04 Newsletter

inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, w with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming

and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners

ahead of him ci rcled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay"

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him

by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third! Shay, run to third!"

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, "Shay, run home! Run home!" Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

"That day", said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, "the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world".

Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

EASTERN INSTITUTE 2007 ANNUAL MEETINGHosted by The Delaware Jaycees

Saturday, May 19, 2007Newark, DE

The Delaware Jaycees are excited to host the 2007 Annual Eastern Institute Meeting. We have a fun-filled and informative weekend planned for everyone.

We will offer fantastic training options. Our featured trainer for the weekend is Brad Gemeinhart, Interim National Director. He will train us on how to utilize the US Junior Chamber resources to help market your chapter and state, provide us with website communication tips, and provide an overview of the US Junior Chamber Executive organization. Other topics are being finalized through surveys from each state’s delegates. Please make sure to provide your training requests to your state delegate.

We are holding Write Up and Speak Up competitions. The Speak Up winner will have the opportunity to give their presentation to the full delegation at the end of the meeting. The competitors will receive feedback from the judges that they can utilize in future competitions.

For those arriving Friday evening, we are planning a fun, social activity. On Saturday evening, we’ll be heading into Wilmington’s Riverfront to watch our local minor league baseball team, the Wilmington Blue Rocks. After the game, we’ll return to the hotel and open up the hospitality room which will feature the 2nd Annual EI Martini Bar.

Pennsylvania Jaycee Creed

We Believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life.

That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;

That economic justice can best be won by

free men through free enterprise;

That government should be of laws rather than of men;

That earth's great treasure lies in human personality;

And that service to humanity is the best work of life.
