The Olivet College women’s golf team captured the 2006Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championshipduring the fall and the MIAA playoff in the spring. By virtue of winningthe playoff, the Comets earned the league’s automatic bid to the2007 NCAA Division III National Championships, where they placedninth of 20 teams. Therefore, one word, “repeat,” describes thegoal for the 2007 team.

According to Head Coach Bill Maas, “there is no doubt that thegoal to repeat is a realistic one because of the talent of the returninggolfers. In fact, I believe that we will put up better scores than lastyear.”

Leading the group of returning golfers are juniors Trisha McKim(DeWitt) and Lindsay Pipkin (White Lake/Lakeland). McKim andPipkin earned first-team All-MIAA honors for the second straightyear in 2006. In addition, Pipkin became the first women’s golfer inschool history to be named to the National Golf Coaches AssociationAll-Great Lakes Region team.

In the four MIAA rounds during the fall, McKim totaled 339strokes for a 84.8 average. Pipkin was only three strokes behindat 341 and 85.3. During the spring, McKim had a 90.1 average, while Pipkin had a team-low 83.9 average, including an 80.3average in the three MIAA rounds.

“Trisha and Lindsay are such great individuals,” said Maas.“Going to nationals last year opened their eyes to show what hardwork can do. Together, they were our best recruiting class and theyhave not let us down.”

2007 SEASON PREVIEW

WOMEN’S GOLF

Senior Amanda Sanders (Concord) is also back after earning2006 second-team All-MIAA honors with an 88.5 stroke average.Senior Jennifer Lambarth (Saline) is expected to return to theteam after missing the entire 2006 season. As a freshman in 2004,she earned first-team All-MIAA honors.

“Amanda has a high level of talent,” says Maas. “For whateverreason, she has not been able to shake some of the bad luck shehas experienced. I am hoping that Jen can return to her freshmanand sophomore form. She was a big part of our success during herfirst two years.”

Also look for sophomores Katie Misko (Alma) and MeganRimmel (Ithaca) to have an impact on this year ’s team. Last year, both played as individual scorers during the fall MIAA rounds andwere not eligible for postseason honors. Misko averaged 89.5strokes in two rounds. Rimmel was first in the player standings withan 84.3 average in four rounds. During the spring, she was secondon the team with an 84.4 average.

“I am hopeful that Katie can continue her trend of getting better,”Maas said. “Megan played a lot during the summer, and I expecther to step up and have a great year.”

Freshmen Amber Conrad (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) andAbby Wheeler (Grayling) add depth to the roster. Conrad tied forseventh-place at the 2007 Michigan High School Athletic Association(MHSAA) Lower Peninsula Division II Girls’ Golf Finals, whileWheeler was 10th at the 2007 MHSAA Lower Peninsula Diivision IIIGirls’ Golf Finals.

Bill Maas is in his fifth season as Olivet’s headwomen’s golf coach. He also serves the athleticdepartment as the NCAA compliance coordinatorand academic counselor.

Maas has steadily built Olivet into the topwomen’s gol f program in the MichiganIntercollegiate Athletic Association. Last year, theComets captured the MIAA championship and

received the league’s automatic bid to the 2007 NCAA Division III NationalChampionships. Olivet finished in ninth-place (out of 20 schools) at thenational championships and was only one stroke behind the eighth-place finisher. The team’s rise to the top spot in the MIAA came afterrunner-up finishes in 2004 and 2005.

Maas is a 1989 graduate of Olivet. While a student at Olivet, Maaswas a four-year letterwinner on the soccer team and as a junior andsenior, he served as team captain.

Maas resides in Olivet with wife, Amy. He is the assistant fire chieffor the city of Olivet.

WOMEN’S GOLFMICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2007-08 school year marks the 121st consecutiveyear of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From the verybeginning, the MIAA has conducted full-season championshipsin multiple sports. There have been changes in some of thesports (bicycle racing and Indian club juggling have long sincedisappeared, and basketball did not even exist in 1888), butthese changes have served to develop the MIAA into one ofAmerica’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, and SaintMary’s. Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has everbelonged to any other formal league. Albion and Olivet werecharter members although Albion is the only member to holdcontinuous membership. Ex-members are Michigan StateUniversity (1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), and Defiance College(1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’sCollege of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the state ofMichigan. The league stipulated, however, that the name ofthe conference would not change. The inaugural year ofcurrent members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888), Alma(1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet(1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.

Tri-State University of Angola, Ind., became a conferencemember in 2004-05 upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAAmember.

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center. Construction began in September.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”
