6 With a full season now under his belt, VMI head soccer coach Ben Freakley is extremely optimistic and excited about the future of his program. Despite losing five starters, including VMI’s second all-time leading scorer in Charles Nweke due to graduation, Freakley and assistant coach Henry Ellis brought in one of the largest and most talented recruiting classes in the program’s 35-year history to help fill the void. “(Having a young team) Chemistry is the most important ingredient to our suc- cess this year,” said Freakley. “We’re very excited about them, every one of these guys brings something special to our program, just as every one of our returning players do. It gives us a lot of reasons to be positive of the future.“ The Keydets return only 17% of their scoring from a year ago, forcing this year’s team to rely heavily on several fresh faces. The new-look Keydets will be repre- sented by 14 underclassmen, and will look for immediate contributions from near- ly all of them. 2007 team captains John Sollock and Barrett Luxhoj represent two of the more experienced players on the team, and have been called upon to help lead the team throughout the growing process. “We are really going to rely on a lot of our players this year: freshman, sophomores juniors and seniors. We are going to be a very young team, but everybody is going to have an opportunity to compete. All of our players have done well this presea- son, and of all 24 players on this team, I can see significant contributions this sea- son from all of them.” FORWARDS: The striker position will be represented by a host of talented players that can affec- tively put the ball in the net. The front-runners heading into the season appear to be Tony Nweke and Wythe Horbal, both of whom have had great offseasons. Nweke, a sophomore and younger brother of Charles, has found himself a perma- nent home up front after rotating between forward and outside midfielder last sea- son, in which he was selected to the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team. Joining Nweke on the front line will be Horbal, a redshirt junior that returns to action after a year off. Horbal had a very solid sophomore season for the Keydets in 2005, scoring six goals which tied for a team best and will look to continue to be strong scoring threat. Not far behind Nweke and Horbal are a pair of freshman in John Sisco and Zach Morgan, along with junior Shawn Graham. Sisco is a very good playmaker and was a three-year player for Solar Red Soccer Club in Texas, and helped guide the club to back-to-back State Cup quarterfinal appearances. Meanwhile, Morgan was the 2007 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) State Player of the Year and a First Team All-State choice in 2006 & 2007. He finished his career at Benedictine as the all-time leading goals scorer (76), and well as sur- passing the mark for all-time points. Graham is a versatile player that will see time as both a forward and midfielder this year. MIDFIELDERS: The midfielder position will be a rather young unit this season, but also a very tal- ented one. Freshmen Chris Curtis, David Hill, Sonny Landry and Brian Harding all appear to be adapting to the college game rather quickly. Curtis was a 2006 First Team All-Conference and All-State Honorable Mention selection at Norfolk Collegiate High School and one of three Keydet newcomers on the Virginia Rush SC, a program that has been VA State Finalists for the past two sea- sons. Hill, a Mercer Island, Wash. native, had an impressive playing career at the Darlington School in Rome, Ga., and will provide VMI with another dangerous scoring threat. Landry, another Rush member, was the team’s leading scorer in 2006 with 13 goals. Harding, who played at Butler High School just outside of Charlotte, N.C., was selected to the 2006 N.C. Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team for his senior season and also played in the North Carolina East-West All-Star game. 2007 SEASON OUTLOOK

FORWARDS:

The striker position will be represented by a host of talented players that can affec-tively put the ball in the net. The front-runners heading into the season appear tobe Tony Nweke and Wythe Horbal, both of whom have had great offseasons.Nweke, a sophomore and younger brother of Charles, has found himself a perma-nent home up front after rotating between forward and outside midfielder last sea-

DEFENSE:

The defensive unit is easily the team’s most experienced group, featuring two jun-iors and two sophomores that return with significant playing experience. Three-year starter Steve Anderson drops back to likely occupy a center back position, after playing in 37 games his first two seasons as both a midfielder and defender.Luxhoj solidified his starting position last year as a right-backer, and as mentionedearlier will also don the captains armband for his junior season. Sophomore’s WillQuarles and Tyler Suttenfield will round out the backline for VMI. Quarles, aWinchester, Va. native, will play both defender and outside midfielder positionsthis year and really impressed the coaching staff this offseason with his fitness andwork ethic. Suttenfield was thrust into the starting role last year as a freshman, andprovided solid defending as a starter for the final 14 games of the year.

Senior Jeremy Clement is another talented athlete who should see significanttime in the defense, as he brings 36 games of experience to the mix. Furthermore, youngsters Stephan Bohanan, Kurt Zimmerman, Hull and Landry each providesolid options to occupy a number of the defender positions.

GOALIES:

Freshman keeper Brian Sowell appears to have earned a majority of the minutesin goal this year for the Keydets, coming to VMI as a highly-touted player fromTabb High School in Virginia. At 6’3”, Sowell possesses ideal size for the colle-giate level and was a First Team All-District and Second Team All-Region. Theyoungster also holds a host of school records, including saves in a game (22) andcareer shutouts (21). Battling with Sowell is senior co-captain Sollock, who hasplayed in 28 career games and has 84 saves to his name. Sollock is also relied uponas one of the team’s most vocal leaders.

Senior Steve Phillips returns for his final season as another good option in the netfor the Keydets, while junior Greg Hersh can also step in if called upon.

THE BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE:

Wins will once again be tough to earn in the Big South Conference this season, with a number of teams returning their top performers from a year ago. TheWinthrop Eagles were once again tabbed as the pre-season favorite with 97 pointsand all but one first-place vote, as they return two of the leagues top scorers andtwo-time conference player of the year in Saidi Isaac. Voted second was CoastalCarolina, who return nine starters and 15 letterwinners from a team that finishedsecond in the league standings a year ago, and are looking to return to the NCAATournament after five consecutive appearances from 2001-05.

Liberty (64) and Radford (62) were slated just behind the Chanticleers in thepolls, and present a pair of opponents that the Keydets lost games to by just a sin-gle goal last season. UNC Asheville (40) and High Point (29) occupy the fifthand sixth spots in the pre-season voting, followed by the Keydets

The 2007 Big South Conference Championship is slated for November 15-18,and will take place at the Winthrop University Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.

“Competing for a Big South Championships is always our goal,” commentedFreakley. “It really drives every training session that we do.”

THE SCHEDULE:

This season, the Keydets will host nine matches at home on Patchin Field, includ-ing welcoming back to Lexington the Virginia Tech Hokies for the first time since2000.

Right out of the gate, VMI will play a series of top-level teams as they face GeorgiaSouthern and Appalachian State at the Broyhill Inn Classic in Boone, N.C. toopen the season, followed by 2006 Atlantic Sun champion and NCAA tourna-ment participants from Gardner-Webb.
