T he celebration took place at TACC on Saturday, March 3, 6:00 P.M. Nearly 300 people showed up for the joyful occasion. After TACC Director Ted Sao-Tah Fan’s welcome address, Orange County Cultural Center Director Yen, Kuo- Yu read congratulatory letters sent by Taiwan President Chen, Shui-bian and Overseas Affairs Commissioner Chang, Fu-mei. A representative of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and County Supervisor Ron Roberts read a congratulatory plaque affirming the community services and contributions of TAFSD/TACC. The City Council also passed a resolution designating March 3 as TAFSD Day. After officially assuming the title of TAFSD presidency, Ching- Chih Chen thanked his predecessor Edward Wung for his three long years of outstanding leadership and service and presented him with a plaque saying “Mountain green forever and remark- able contributions live on.” As TAFSD/TACC was founded on February 28, 1947, the day when Dictator Chiang Kai-Shek’s KMT troops began the slaughtering of between 18,000 and 28,000 Taiwanese in less than a month time, Chen Ching-Chih stressed the need and importance of recovering facts about the massacre and establishing accountability. He then proceeded to point out that Taiwan has lost hundreds and thousands of lives to repressive alien rule of the Dutch, Manchu, Japanese and Chinese Nationalists successively. If the Taiwanese are to be their own masters, they will have to reject alien rule once and for all. Then, Chiu-Shan Chen, one of the founding fathers/mothers of TAFSD/TACC, briefly described the found- ing and development of the institution through overcoming difficulties with determination. He thanked those who helped and supported in the past and pleaded that people within the community will again get- together to contribute what they can so as to help acquire a permanent building as our own Center. What followed was a slide show demonstrating significant and interesting events of the past 10 years. Chen Elected New President of TAFSD

Chen Ching-Chih was elected to suc-ceed Edward Wung as the President

of TAFSD. Chen sees his job as the coordinator among the nearly 30 Board Directors who together make decisions and formulate policies of TAFSD. Based on the consensus that its members have reached, the TAFSD Board has identified two major tasks for the year 2007: (1) planning to secure a permanent site as the Taiwanese American Community Center; (2) working to start bringing young Tai-wanese Americans into TAFSD/TACC. It is hoped that with the support of members of the Taiwanese American community

as well as the teamwork of the Board, significant progress will be made toward achieving the two goals.Ching-Chih Chen, born in Taoyuan, Taiwan, received his B.A. in Political Science at Tunghai University, and Ph.D. in History at Harvard University. For 32 years until his retirement in 2001, he taught East Asian history at Southern Il-linois University at Edwardsville and did research on various aspects of East Asian history. Since his retirement, he has been Professor Emeritus of History at his for-mer university and freelance analyst for Taipei Times.

Chen lives in San Marcos with his wife, Pi-chen. They have two daughters, Anne and Jennifer.

Understanding Science Seminar Series (VI)

Superconductivity and Its ApplicationsDate: Apr 22, Sunday, 3 pmPlace: Auditorium, Taiwanese American Community CenterLecturer: Jinwun Winston Lue

J. W. Lue received B.S. from Taiwan Normal University in 1964, M.A. from

Tsinghwa University of Taiwan in 1967, and Ph.D. from University of Pittsburgh in 1972. After two years at the Indiana University and one year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison of postdoctoral research, he joined the Oak Ridge Na-tional Laboratory (ORNL) in 1975 where he worked at the Fusion Energy Division for 29 years and retired as a Senior R&D Staff. In the first half of his career at ORNL, Lue worked in various stages of research and development of supercon-

ducting magnets for fusion reactors. He performed some pioneering work on the development of cable-in-conduit force-cooled superconductors and played a key role in the testing and analysis of the Large Coil Project — an international magnet development program where six 3-m x 5-m bore superconducting magnets from four different countries were tested in a toroidal array. In the second half of his career at ORNL, Lue worked in the research and development of high-tem-perature superconducting (HTS) magnet and cable for power applications. He is

instrumental in developing the tri-axial HTS power transmission cable. Lue’s research on the stability and quench issues of superconductors and superconducting magnets spanned both the low and high temperature superconductors. In this lecture, Lue will: 1) give a short history of superconductivity, 2) explain some properties of superconductors that affect their applications, 3) list different kinds of superconductors, 4) introduce some relevant technologies, and 5) show some present and future applications of superconductors.

TACC Karaoke Competition

To sign up for competition, please contact Taiwan Center. 1-858-560-8884. Great Prizes!!!

The Taiwanese Culture Association presents “Taiwanese Culture & Food Fair”. The fair features selections from traditional Taiwanese cuisines. Good music, performance and information for the young and old alike will add to the food fair fun.

Established in the autumn of 2001, Semi-scon was constituted by a group of old

friends. We have made acquaintances with one another since “All-musical Chorus”, which was the pioneering musical company in Taiwan. In preparation of various periodi-cal invitation from, among others, National theater and Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, during the time attending “All-musical Cho-rus”, we underwent rigorous professional training in such areas as voice, dance, and theatrical performance to give audience the utmost of acoustic and visual delight. Five

years of stage experience and continuous performance training contribute vastly not only to our professionalism as performers but our friendship as well. Approximately 2 years ago, a number of the choir mem-bers decided to extend our musical antenna and further explore what other realms of performing art have to offer; therefore we started our own “a cappella”. Semiscon incorporate our previous perform-ing experience into traditional chorus and wish to challenge ourselves and create a one-of -a- kind new special sensation for

our audience. We attended Taiwan A cap-pella Competition, the chief and authorita-tive a cappella contest in Taiwan, and won the championship of the singers’ group. Semiscon, also awarded the two prizes of “the best stage presentation” and “the best presentation of designated song”.Semiscon was the most outstanding team of this competition in 2003, therefore we had the chance to release our album, the first album of a-cappella in Taiwan.Semiscon had become the most popular a-cappella group in Taiwan.

Zhang, Horung’s water-color portrait paintings

Zhan, Horung was born in Shanghai. After high school, he attended Uni-

versal Art College in Hong Kong to study art. In 1951 he returned to Shanghai to learn from China’s masters of water-color painting. The following year, he enrolled in the Art Department, Nanjing Normal University. After graduation, he taught art at various levels of schools for many years and accumulated rich experiences in art instruction. In his leisure hours, he continued to learn and create, and regularly participated in art exhibitions at the national

as well as provincial levels. His published collections of art pieces were sold nation-wide and were widely received. After retiring from Qingdao Art College in 1990, he migrated to the United States and has been residing in San Diego. He has been studying method of teaching art to children. San Diego’s beautiful sceneries and most pleasant weather as well as its various different faces of multi-ethnic population greatly stimulated the painter’s creative passion. Zhang consequently go outdoors regularly to paint sceneries. However,

when he stays indoors, he paints still-life objects. He also frequently visits local art studios to study water-color portrait paint-ing. Items exhibited at the Gallery are his works of the recent past. Various colorful portraits are gathered here.
