Atlantic 10 ConferenceOn March 2, 1975, the idea

of what is now the Atlantic 10Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men's basketball-onlyaffiliation has grown into a14-university, 21-sport leaguethat is universally hailed asone of the best conferencesin the country.

That growth and promi-nence is a direct result of the ideals and commit-ments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 -the University of Dayton, Duquesne University,Fordham University, The George WashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts, University of North Carolina atCharlotte, University of Rhode Island, University ofRichmond, St. Bonaventure University, SaintJoseph's University, Saint Louis University, TempleUniversity, and Xavier University.

On June 2, 2008, Bernadette V. McGlade wasnamed the fifth full-time commissioner in Confer-ence history, replacing Linda Bruno, who held theposition for 13 years. McGlade's experience incollegiate athletics as a student-athlete, coach andadministrator spans more than thirty years.

"Bernadette's deep experience with arguably theclass-act athletic conference [Atlantic CoastConference] in the country makes us incrediblyexcited to be bringing her on board as commis-sioner of the Atlantic 10 Conference," said FatherMichael Graham, Xavier University president andpresident of the Atlantic 10 Presidents' Council.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10institutions have made a strong commitment tomaking the academic and athletics equation work.Over the years, the league membership has strivedto better recognize the academic accomplishmentsof its student-athletes. The Commissioner's HonorRoll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athletewith a 3.5 grade point average or better, recog-nized 1,247 student-athletes in the Fall 2007 while1,106 were named to the Spring 2008 Honor Roll.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conferenceteams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of theYear. In 2007-08, 192 student-athletes earnedAcademic All-Conference recognition. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduatescholarship grants to qualified student-athletes.

The Atlantic 10 Conference had 34 teams amongthe 712 Division I sports teams honored by theNCAA with public recognition awards for theirlatest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR)scores. These teams posted multi-year APRscores in the top 10 percent of all squads in theirrespective sports. Saint Louis and Xavier led theAtlantic 10 in the number of high-performing squadsreceiving awards with six teams each. In 20 of the21 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, theleague's APR scores were at or above the

conference average nationally according to themost recent data released by the NCAA.

Men's swimming & diving standout Brad Byars ofSaint Louis was among 58 NCAA winter-sportstudent-athletes to earn an educational grant forthe upcoming academic year through the NCAApostgraduate scholarship program. Byars willcontinue his education at Saint Louis Universitywhere he will pursue a Juris Doctorate andMasters of Health Care Administration.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a totalpopulation of nearly 74 million people within itsgeographic footprint of eight states and the Districtof Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports thisseason: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women's lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's andwomen's swimming & diving, men's and women'stennis, and women's volleyball.

2007-08 FINAL STATISTICS

Optimism abounds in Charlotte as the 49ersreturn 73 percent of their scoring, 87 percent oftheir rebounding and 86 percent of their assistsfrom a team that reached the 20-win plateau for thefifth time under head coach Bobby Lutz andadvanced to the NIT. Now in his 11th year atCharlotte, Lutz has guided the program to eightpostseason appearances and his 188 wins aretops in school annals.

Charlotte welcomes back its entire startingfrontcourt in senior forwards Lamont Mack andCharlie Coley and sophomore An'Juan Wilderness. The 6-7 Mack was the 49ers' second-leadingscorer (12.8 ppg.) and rebounder (5.1 rpg.) a yearago and displayed great range by knocking down64 field goals from beyond the arc. Coley (8.7ppg.) led the team in both rebounding (6.2 rpg.) andblocks (46), while Wilderness was an A-10 All-Rookie selection after posting averages of 8.1points and 4.9 boards, shooting 48.2 percent (92-for-191) from the floor and grabbing a team-high 86offensive rebounds.

The backcourt will be without Leemire Goldwire, who graduated after leading the team with an 18.6scoring average and league-best 128 three-pointers, but the tandem of point guards DiJuanHarris and Michael Gerrity is solid. Harris (3.5 ppg.)passed out a team-high 108 assists, led the A-10 inassist-to-turnover ratio (2.77) and was third on theteam in steals (37) as a sophomore last season.Gerrity sat out the first semester a year ago aftertransferring from Pepperdine and averaged 4.7points while dishing out 91 assists. Junior IanAndersen (5.8 ppg.) shot 37 percent (47-for-127)from beyond the arc and will be counted on to helpreplace some of Goldwire's long-range shooting.

Depth will be a huge asset for the 49ers, whohave added a pair of impact newcomers in 6-3freshman guard Shamarr Bowden (17.0 ppg.) andversatile 6-5 junior Rashad Coleman (26.0 ppg.).Freshman guard Javarris Barnett (14.0 ppg.)redshirted last season and sophomore CharlesDewhurst (4.4 ppg.) provide speed on theperimeter, with junior Phil Jones (3.3 ppg.) and

sophomore Gaby Ngoundjo (1.2 ppg.) addingpower in the paint.

2007-08 FINAL STATISTICS

Dayton jumped out to a 14-1 record and No. 14national ranking before an onslaught of injuries andillnesses decimated the team. UD finished 23-11overall and advanced to the NIT quarterfinalsbefore losing at eventual champion Ohio State. TheFlyers return 10 lettermen from that team, includingthree of their top four scorers and three leadingrebounders. Missing, however, will be three-timeAll-Conference guard Brian Roberts, who endedhis career at or near the top of many of theprogram's all-time statistical categories.

Leading the way in 2008-09 will be the team'stop three rebounders from a year ago in sophomoreforward Chris Wright (5.7 rpg.), junior guardMarcus Johnson (5.1 rpg.) and senior forwardCharles Little (4.6 rpg.). All three players boastvertical leaps of 40 inches or better. The 6-8 Wrightaveraged 10.4 points and was named to theleague's All-Rookie Team despite suffering afractured ankle in the Flyers' A-10 opener. Hereturned to average double figures in the NIT.

Little, the 2007 Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year, averaged eight points per game last season whileshooting 49.8 percent (100-for-201) from the field. He will be joined in the frontcourt by Kurt Huelsman, who made great strides a year ago as a sopho-more. The 6-10 center has started every game ofhis college career and averaged 5.9 points and fourboards last year. Sophomore Devin Searcy (1.0ppg.) will provide depth along the baseline.

The 6-3 Johnson averaged 10.1 points whilemaking 33 starts at shooting guard and is theFlyers' top returning marksman from three-pointrange with 22 made last season. Junior LondonWarren (4.3 ppg.) could be the fastest player in theConference in the open floor and is the likely choiceto assume the point guard duties. Warren led theteam in steals (45) and ranked second in assists(65) in 18.4 minutes per contest. Junior college All-American Rob Lowery (18.2 ppg.) will push for timeat the point, while junior Mickey Perry (2.8 ppg.) andsophomore Stephen Thomas (0.7 ppg.) add depth.

Dayton FlyersIn addition to Lowery, UD welcomes an extremely

athletic group of newcomers in freshmen guardsChris Johnson (26.2 ppg.) and Paul Williams (23.8ppg.) and forwards Josh Benson (18.9 ppg.) andLuke Fabrizius (14.7 ppg.).

Duquesne continued its turnaround under third-year head coach Ron Everhart by posting theprogram's first winning season in 14 years with a17-13 record in 2007-08. As a result, Everhart inkeda multi-year extension in the offseason that willhave him on the sidelines of the A.J. Palumbo Centerthough the 2013-14 season.

In order to maintain the program's ascent, Everhartis going to have to find a way to replace the team'stop five scorers from a year ago. The Dukes, whohave led the Atlantic 10 in scoring average in eachof the last two seasons, will look to the returning trioof senior Aaron Jackson and sophomores DamianSaunders and Bill Clark from an extremely youngnucleus that includes 11 freshmen and sophomores.

The 6-4 Jackson averaged nine points whileshooting an astounding 54.9 percent (106-for-193)from the field last season. Jackson, who boasts animpressive 1.8-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio for hiscareer and 311 assists, will slide over to the pointguard slot for the first time since his freshmancampaign. The versatile Saunders earned A-10 All-Rookie honors after averaging 6.5 points and 5.2boards, which ranked second on the team, whileleading the Dukes in steals (45). The three-timeRookie of the Week selection blocked a Duquesnefreshman-record 39 shots and displayed greatrange as evidenced by his 24 field goals frombeyond the arc. Clark appeared in every game ayear ago and averaged 8.2 points and 4.3 boardswhile leading the team in three-point field goals with40. Guards Phillip Fayne (3.5 ppg.) and Jason Duty(2.3 ppg.) will provide depth and experience in thebackcourt.

The Dukes' seven-player freshman class, ranked28th nationally by Hoop Scoop, will be looked uponto make an immediate contribution. The talentedquartet of guards includes Melquan Bolding (18.0ppg.), Eric Evans (26.3 ppg.), B.J. Monteiro (21.3ppg.) and Chase Robinson (23.3 ppg.). Monteiroearned Connecticut Player of the Year honors, whileEvans was a finalist for Michigan's "Mr. Basketball"

"Praise youth and it will prosper." It's an old Irishproverb that Fordham will be looking to for guidancein 2008-09. The Rams will feature six new faces, five of those freshmen who will be looking to helpthe program recover from the loss of five seniors, including four starters. To call the Rams a youngteam would not be a stretch as the roster consistsof two seniors, five juniors, two sophomores andfive freshmen. However, the squad will be anathletic and fleet-footed one that should allow sixth-year head coach Dereck Whittenburg to push thetempo and create havoc on defense.

Junior guard Brenton Butler, the lone returningstarter, will lead the Rams after finishing third on theteam in scoring (11.0 ppg.) a year ago and dishingout 68 assists. Joining Butler in the backcourt arereturnees Mike Moore and Herb Tanner. Mooreaveraged 5.5 points during his freshman seasonand shot 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from three-pointrange. Tanner (2.5 ppg.) averaged 13.9 minutesand will look to increase his scoring as a junior.

In the frontcourt, Fordham will need to fill the voidcreated by the graduation of Bryant Dunston, whoended his career as the program's second all-timeleading scorer and third all-time leading rebounder.Seniors Luke Devine (0.0 ppg.), who appeared inten games, and Chris Bethel, who averaged 3.1ppg. in eleven contests, will look to increase theirnumbers with added minutes. Junior Dan Landisch(0.7 ppg.), a rugged 6-6 forward who saw a bit ofaction at the end of last year, will also providedepth.

There's no doubt that the success of the 2008-09Rams will be directly related to the success of theirnewcomers. Leading the way are guards JioFontan (10.5 ppg.) and Alberto Estwick (8.0 ppg.),teammates on the 2007-08 St. Anthony's (N.J.)squad that went 32-0 and finished the year as thenation's top-ranked high school team. Fontan couldassume the starting point guard responsibilities andreceived rave reviews for his play over thesummer.

2007-08 FINAL STATISTICS

After making three consecutive trips to theNCAA Tournament while compiling a 72-20 recordfrom 2005-07, George Washington will take to thecourt in 2008-09 focused on proving that lastseason's 9-17 mark was an anomaly. Under thedirection of eighth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, four starters return from a roster that is bothversatile and athletic.

Senior forward Rob Diggs has steadily improvedhis scoring and rebounding production each yearand led the team in both categories (13.9 ppg., 7.7rpg.) last season. The springy 6-8 forward shot49.6 percent (140-of-282) from the floor, paced theColonials with 31 blocks and should be an All-Conference candidate in the coming year. Diggswill be joined in the frontcourt by a pair of returningstarters in senior Wynton Witherspoon and juniorDamian Hollis.

The 6-7 Witherspoon ranked second on the teamin both scoring (11.0 ppg.) and assists (2.2 apg.)and added a team-high 30 steals after sitting outthe 2006-07 campaign upon transferring fromVirginia Tech. Hollis averaged 9.1 points and 6.3boards while proving to be a difficult matchup foropponents because of his ability to drive to thebasket or use his 6-8 frame to shoot overdefenders. Juniors Peter Laplante (0.3 ppg) andHermann Opoku (1.0 ppg.) will provide depth, whilesophomores Joseph Katuka (2.0 ppg.) and JabariEdwards (0.0 ppg.) are eager to make significantcontributions.

The backcourt welcomes back a noteworthyplaymaker in sophomore Travis King, who missedall of last season after sustaining a knee injury inthe offseason. The 6-2 King averaged 5.7 pointsand 2.4 assists as a freshman during the Colonials'run to the 2007 A-10 crown. Senior shootingguard Noel Wilmore (6.0 ppg.) led GW with 42three-point field goals, which included a career-best seven trifecta's in a win over Rhode Island

last season. Sophomore Xavier Alexander (4.0ppg.), who at 6-6 provides great size on theperimeter, made 14 starts and finished second on theteam in steals (26). Walk-ons Jeff Alston, Jeff DelFavero and Johnny Lee will provide depth andexperience.

Hobbs also welcomes three freshmen to theprogram in 2008-09 in guards Matt Allbritton (21.4ppg.) and Tony Taylor (29.3 ppg.) and 6-5 forwardAaron Ware (20.4 ppg.).

2007-08 FINAL STATISTICS

In fourth-year head coach Chris Mooney's firstseason at Richmond, there were no scholarshipguards in the program. In his second season, theteam's top four scorers were freshmen. Last year, with 81 percent of the scoring coming fromfreshmen and sophomores, the Spiders finishedfourth in the Conference, earned a first round byein the A-10 Championship and a berth in theinaugural College Basketball Invitational.

Mooney, who guided UR to a 16-15 overallrecord – its first winning mark since 2003-04 – nowenters the 2008-09 campaign faced with thedistinct possibility of not having one of the league’stop players at his disposal. Junior Dan Geriot, a 6-9forward/center and third-team All-Atlantic 10selection who has started 52 games and led theSpiders in both scoring (14.3 ppg.) and rebounding(5.5 rpg.) last season, sustained a knee injuryduring summer league competition and could missthe year.

Richmond does welcome back nearly its entireteam from last season, led by athletic swingmanDavid Gonzalvez, who averaged 11.7 points andwas the Spiders’ top three-point shooter with 61field goals from beyond the arc as a sophomore.Vying for a starting role in the frontcourt is 6-9senior Jarhon Giddings (3.9 ppg.), who finishedsecond on the team with 16 blocks while averaging10.7 minutes a year ago. Giddings is the lonescholarship senior on the squad.

Sophomore Kevin Anderson, the 2007-08 Atlantic10 Rookie of the Year, assumed the starting pointguard role early on in his freshman campaign andflourished with averages of 10.7 points and threeassists while ranking fourth in the Conference inminutes (34.8 mpg.). Junior guard Ryan Butler (5.5ppg.) registered 44 steals, good for second on theteam, and shot an efficient 34.3 percent (35-of-102) from three-point range.

While Anderson made the biggest impact as arookie, classmates Kevin Smith and Justin Harperalso displayed great promise a year ago. Smithaveraged 4.6 points in 21.6 minutes of action andadded 24 steals while showing great potential onthe defensive end. An athletic 6-9 forward, Harper

Richmond Spiders(3.3 ppg.) saw action in 29 games and could bepoised for a breakout year.

The staff is excited about the impact of its threeincoming freshmen: forwards Josh Duinker andDarrius Garrett (16.2 ppg.) and guard Francis CedricMartel (19.8 ppg.). In addition, 6-8 freshman forwardConor Smith (16.0 ppg.) joins the squad after sittingout last season.

2007-08 FINAL STATISTICS

With his blue collar work ethic now instilled in theprogram, second-year head coach Mark Schmidtwill continue his revival of St. Bonaventurebasketball in 2008-09.

Schmidt and his staff will have their work cut outfor them as they welcome back just threeletterwinners, including two starters, from lastyear's squad. With the departure of seniorsZarryon Fereti, Michael Lee and Tyler Relph - theteam's top three leading scorers who accountedfor 64 percent of the offense - the Bonnies will turnto a talented group of nine newcomers to take overthe brunt of the scoring load.

Senior forward D'Lancy Carter is the team'sleading returning scorer (6.6 ppg) and rebounder(6.2 rpg) after one season in the Brown and White. The 6-10 Carter also led the squad with 24 blocksin just 24.5 minutes of action. Also back are guardsTyler Benson and Malcolm Eleby (2.8 ppg). Benson,a 6-7 senior, started half of the team's 30 games ayear ago, contributing 5.3 points and 3.5 boards percontest. Eleby came off the bench to run the pointand showed great potential, most notably a ten-point performance at Xavier.

The attention will be squarely focused onSchmidt's first full recruiting class, a six-membergroup ranked 26th in the nation by Hoop Scoop. The fresh faces include a trio of junior collegestandouts in guards Ray Blackburn (19.7 ppg.), aNJCAA Division II All-American, Jonathan Hall (18.8ppg.) and Lewis Leonard (25.2 ppg.). All three willbe counted on for their scoring abilities. Roundingout the class are 6-9 forward Andrew Nicholson(18.0 ppg.) and guards Michael Davenport (11.0ppg.) and Marquise Simmons.

Also joining the Bonnies this fall are a pair ofjunior transfers, Chris Matthews and MauriceThomas. A 6-4 guard from Washington State,Matthews averaged 3.7 points, while the 6-8Thomas, who averaged 9.4 points and 5.4rebounds at UTEP in 2006-07, will give thefrontcourt some much needed scoring potential.Freshman forward Da'Quan Cook (13.4 ppg) alsowill push for time after sitting out last season.

Heading into 2008-09, the Hawks return threestarters, led by senior Ahmad Nivins (14.4 ppg.).Twice named to the All-Conference team, the 6-9forward averaged 5.8 boards while shooting 64.7percent (165-of-255) from the floor. SJU alsowelcomes back its starting backcourt in seniorTasheed Carr and junior Darrin Govens. The 6-4Carr averaged 10.8 points and 5.6 assists, good forsecond in the A-10, while demonstrating the abilityto run the offense. Govens (9.8 ppg.) startedevery game at shooting guard and finished secondon the team with 68 three-pointers.

Junior Garrett Willamson (5.3 ppg.), a 6-5 guard,is an intense defender on the perimeter who will becounted on to extend his shooting range. Heranked third on the team in assists (89) whileaveraging 23.3 minutes. Sophomore forward IdrisHilliard (1.2 ppg.) will have the chance to earn astarting spot in the frontcourt. A good rebounderand inside scorer, the 6-7 forward saw action inevery game last season. Senior guard EdwinLashley (1.4 ppg.) and sophomore Charoy Bentley(0.3 ppg.) will be vying for more playing time, whilejunior walk-on C.J. Brown (0.5 ppg.) providesenergy and depth.

An athletic and versatile five-man freshmanclass will be heavily relied upon for depth andproduction. The group includes guards MikeAuriemma (20.0 ppg.), Chris Prescott (22.0 ppg.)and A.J. Rogers (7.0 ppg.), forward Bryant Irwin(31.0 ppg.) and center Temi Adebayo (7.9 ppg.).

"Balance is certainly going to be a style of playfor us. We need five guys on the floor who canscore the ball. I think we can be better defensively, and we need to be better defensively," saysMartelli, who embarks on his 14th season on HawkHill.

"We need to have a balance between offenseand defense - we're not going to be out-shootingpeople, we need to be outplaying people. The style

for us stays the same - to be highly competitive, share the ball, take your shot when it's availableand defend to the best of your ability."

The Hawks will play their home games at ThePalestra this season as the Fieldhouse undergoesrenovations.

2007-08 FINAL STATISTICS

It's difficult to discuss the 2008-09 seasonwithout talking about recent success, especially therecord-setting 2007-08 campaign behind theleadership of a trio of senior stars. Xavier made itsthird straight NCAA Tournament appearance lastseason and seventh in the last eight years. In fact, after last year's Elite Eight run, XU is one of onlynine schools that have made the Elite Eight multipletimes in the last five years. Xavier lost threestarters off of last year's team but welcomes backtwo starters, several key reserves and a highly-touted class of seven newcomers.

The Musketeers, who led the A-10 in scoringmargin (+11.7 ppg.) a year ago, return their second-leading scorer in athletic junior forward DerrickBrown (10.9 ppg.) and senior guard/forward C.J.Anderson (10.7 ppg.), who is adept at scoring intraffic and off the dribble. Brown served as acounselor at both the Nike Vince Carter SmallForward Camp and the LeBron James SkillsAcademy over the summer.

Also returning is senior guard/forward B.J.Raymond, who averaged 9.9 points and knockeddown 82 three-point field goals last season. XUwelcomes back its top three rebounders from lastseason in Brown (6.5 rpg.), Anderson (5.9 ppg.),and bruising junior forward/center Jason Love (6.0ppg., 5.5 rpg.). Sophomore guard Dante' Jackson(2.4 ppg.) averaged 10.4 minutes and showedgreat potential as a defender with 22 steals.

The talented newcomer class consists offreshmen guards Terrell Holloway (14.0 ppg.), MarkLyons (21.0 ppg.), Brad Redford (36.7 ppg.), whowon the prestigious Michigan "Mr. Basketball"Award, and Brian Walsh (19.7 ppg.), as well as 7-0All-America center Kenny Frease (20.6 ppg.). Inaddition, the Musketeers welcome 6-8 sophomoreforward Jamel McLean, a transfer from Tulsa whoaveraged six points and 4.8 rebounds while makingseven starts in 2006-07.

These additions add to fifth-year head coachSean Miller's reasons for optimism as XU guns for athird straight Atlantic 10 regular season crown.Miller, the 2007-08 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, is93-39 (.705) in four seasons at Xavier, and alreadyranks fifth in wins in program history.
