Are you curious about animals? Then come along! Let’s do the experi-ments in this kit together to learn all about animals and their habitats, or where they live!In this guidebook, you will see a lot of things that you already recognize. But there is so much left to discover about them! The pictures will guide us in doing our experiments and projects. And whenever you see a Try It box, you will see more ideas for other exciting experiments.Inside the kit, you will also find a colored Knowledge Wheel. You can quiz yourself with it to see if you remember all the things that you discovered while doing your experiments.And now, let’s begin!

This experiment kit about animals is designed for children ages 5 and up. For each experiment, first ask your child the question at the beginning of the experiment. Then present the various pictures to him or her as possible answers. In this way, your child can start to develop ideas about how to explain everyday experiences. Next, your child can follow the pictures to do the experiment mostly by him or herself, to test his or her ideas. That will let your child discover firsthand the answer to the question posed at the beginning. Finally, read your child the answer summary at the end of the experiment to confirm or correct his or her own conclusions.This guidebook is presented in English and Spanish to aid you in conduct-ing the experiments, and also so that it may be used as a resource for language learning.

About Working With Animals

Dear Children,

This experiment kit will help you learn something about animals and the tracks that they make in the wild. But please keep in mind that animals are living creatures just like you, and that they thus feel pain just like you. But unlike you, they cannot speak, and they cannot communicate their pain very well. Therefore, you should handle small animals such as earthworms, snails, and ladybugs with caution, picking them up carefully in your hand and placing them gently back on the ground after you have finished observing them.

If you encounter larger animals, such as rabbits or deer in the woods, do not frighten them. Approach them slowly and cautiously if you want to observe them, but do not disturb them when they are eat-ing or sleeping.

Of course, you can use the same method to make a plaster mold of the footprint of someone’s shoe.

Answer:You can use liquid plaster to pour into animal tracks that you have found. The cardboard frame prevents the plaster from flowing too far out. When the plaster has dried, you can carefully lift the frame and release the block of plaster with the animal track. Then carefully remove any remaining pieces of dirt.

Answer:Lots of animals live in the earth. The ground dwellers in this experiment only feel good when they are in the dark. They shy away from bright light and flee downwards, away from the lamp’s illumination, into the glass that you have darkened with the use of the black construction paper. That is where you can observe them. Count how many animals live in a trowel-full of soil. (Parents or older brothers or sisters can use this number to help you figure out how many animals would live in a larger area of earth.) Afterwards, set all the animals free outside.

Answer: The tasty apple aroma entices the ground dwellers from the surrounding area. They plop into the apple trap, where you can observe, count, and draw them as they nibble away at your apple piece! Don’t forget to set all your animals free again.

Experiment 5: Can you hear an earthworm?

Answer:Earthworms can’t talk, but you can still hear them. If you place a worm on a sheet of paper, you will hear a scratching sound. That happens because when it crawls, the earthworm makes its body long and then short and fat, using that technique to scratch its way across the paper. Earthworm droppings are also easy to recognize. They look like little mounds of dirt. If it has rained, you can find a lot of earthworms in the garden or in a field outside. They come up out of the earth then so that they don’t drown. After the experiment, set the earthworm free again outside.

Answer:In the jar that you have filled with layers of moist sand, soil, and leaves, the hard-working worms will become quite active. Let the jar stand in a cool, dark spot, and keep it moist. The earthworms will mix up the layers of earth, loosen them, and eat little pieces of leaves. You can observe everything wonderfully through the glass. After a few days, empty the jar outside again.

Perform a glide experiment: Take an old eraser or a small piece of wood and rub it over a rough surface, such as a rough tabletop. Then try it with a drop of liquid soap or shower gel between the two objects. Now you can glide quite easily over the rough surface.

Answer:The trail of slime is from a snail. Snails love dampness. During the day, they creep under plants and rocks. At night, they become active and busy. Wherever they crawl, they leave behind a trail of slime. If you place a snail in a glass bowl, you can also watch it from be-neath. After the experiment, set the snail free outside again.

You can save your treasures (for example, your plas-ter molds, feathers, or gnawed-on pinecones) in col-lection pouches and then label them with stickers.
