Ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top public universities (master’s) inthe region, Ramapo College of New Jersey is sometimes mistaken for a private col-lege. This is, in part, due to its unique interdisciplinary academic structure, its size ofapproximately 5,700 students, and its pastoral setting in the foothills of the RamapoMountains on the New Jersey/New York border.

Established in 1969, Ramapo College offers bachelor’s degrees in the arts, business, humanities, social sciences and the sciences, as well as in professional studies, which include nursing and social work. In addition, Ramapo College offers coursesleading to teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels. The Collegealso offers three graduate programs as well as articulated programs with theUniversity of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and New York ChiropracticCollege.

Undergraduate students choose to concentrate their studies in one of five schoolswith more than 700 course offerings and 40 academic programs. Ramapo Collegeboasts an average student/faculty ratio of 18:1 and average class size of 23, affordingstudents the opportunity to develop close ties to the College’s exceptional faculty.

The College’s mission is focused on the four “pillars” of a Ramapo education: interna-tional, intercultural, interdisciplinary and experiential, all of which are incorporatedthroughout the curriculum and extracurriculum. The international mission is furtheraccomplished through a wide range of study abroad and student exchange links withinstitutions all over the world through the New Jersey State Consortium forInternational Studies (NJSCIS). Additional experiential programs include internships,co-op, and service learning.

A campus-wide building program during recent years has resulted in the completionof the Anisfield School of Business academic facility, a central feature of the mainentrance to the campus; the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center, with its 2,200-seat arena, fitness center, climbing wall, track and dance/aerobics studio; theOverlook and Laurel residence halls and the Village apartment complex. The Angelicaand Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts, completed in 1999, housesperformance theaters, art galleries, and specialized spaces devoted to fine arts, com-puter art, photography, theater, dance, and music.

In addition to Ramapo’s ranking in U.S. News, the College recently was recognizedby two national publications. An article in the February 2008 issue of Kiplinger’s mag-azine named Ramapo College among the top 100 public colleges and universities.Ramapo College also is one of 222 select colleges and universities profiled by ThePrinceton Review in the 2008 edition of The Best Northeastern Colleges.

Dr. Peter Philip Mercer became the College’s fourth president on July 1, 2005. TheCollege is governed by a Board of Trustees who are appointed by the Governor ofthe State. The Reverend Dr. Vernon C. Walton is the chairman of the board.

The New Jersey Athletic Conference was founded in 1985 when the New Jersey StateAthletic Conference, a men’s sports conference, merged with their corresponding insti-tutions in the Jersey Athletic Conference, a women’s sports conference. The ten found-ing member institutions were Kean College (now University), Montclair State College(now University), Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University),Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), Ramapo College of New Jersey,Rutgers University-Camden, Rutgers University-Newark, Stockton State College (nowThe Richard Stockton College of New Jersey), Trenton State College (now TheCollege of New Jersey), and William Paterson College (now University).

While meeting as a joint body to vote on broader policy and procedure matters, theconference continued to operate with separate legislative divisions governing men’sand women’s sports. Throughout its evolution, the conference has been guided by thefollowing operating principles:

*To legislate through by-laws, policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines the admin-istration of the intercollegiate athletic programs of conference members.*To promote intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the total education program.*To protect the welfare of the student-athlete.*To foster and uphold the highest standards of athletic competition and academicintegrity.*To support the principles and practices of Title IX and gender equity.*To encourage allied membership in appropriate state, regional and national organiza-tions.*To cooperate with other amateur athletic organizations in promoting intercollegiateathletics.

Championships were originally offered in twelve sports: men’s and women’s basket-ball, baseball, softball, women’s volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, wrestling, and football. Today, the NJAChosts seventeen championships: ten for women (cross country, basketball, field hock-ey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor trackand field, volleyball) and seven for men (cross country, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field). The conference ranks as one ofthe strongest in NCAA Division III, with member schools capturing forty national cham-pionships over the past sixteen years, and numerous final and semifinal round appear-ances. More than 550 NJAC student-athletes have received All-America honors. In1999-2000, two NJAC members The College of New Jersey and Rowan University, scored in the top ten of the prestigious Sears Cup rankings.

In 1999, the New Jersey Athletic Conference added three new chapters to its history. In May, it hired its first commissioner. In September, the conference amended its con-stitution to allow affiliate members on a sport-by-sport basis and accepted the StateUniversity of New York at Cortland as its first affiliate member for the sport of football. And in October, it revised its constitution andbylaws to merge the men’s and women’s sportsdivisions into a single decision-making body; tocreate committees which more directly addressthe needs and interests of the student-athletesand faculty athletic representatives; and tostrengthen the partnership between the office ofthe president and the department of athletics oneach of our member campuses.
