Kosher Community Surveys LLC is pleased topresent the results of this past years Boston AreaKosher Community Survey. Response to the surveywas again fantastic with 385 people participating.
It has been an interesting year for Bostons koshercommunity. With Gordon & Alperin deciding to forgokosher supervision, there remains only one kosher
butcher/market in the Boston area. Even recently, there has been a change in supervision of highlyrated Milk Street Caf. After the close of the survey,a new establishment opened, Jerusalem Pita, whichis sure to give mainstay Ramis some competition.
Due to feedback we have received from the areaskosher consumers, next years survey will broadenout a bit further including establishments in the
Canton/Peabody area.

Best Of Kosher Boston
In order to qualify for winning recognition, an establishmentmust have received at least 90 evaluations. For the categorywinners, the top establishments were determined by addingtogether the percentage of customers who ranked theestablishment very good or excellent in each category. Forthe overall winners, the very good and excellentpercentages of all the categories were totaled together.
With the closing of Beacon Kosher in 2007 and Gordon &Alperin electing to stop its kosher supervision in 2008, there isonly one kosher market left in the greater Boston area. Thus, there will no awards for the store/butcher category this year.

The Butcherie remains the only supervised kosherbutcher/market in the Boston area. On the positive side, customers indicate a good overall selection and appreciate the
availability of organic meat. While some patrons had positivewords for Josh and Craig, store staff receive mostly criticalcomments, including a lack of friendliness and unhelpfulbehavior. The physical plant needs cleaning and is said to bepoorly organized with cluttered, narrow aisles. Customersspecifically ask that the store upgrade its kosher supervision toglatt status with a full time mashgiach.

Bostons kosher consumers describe Milk Street Caf as amodel kosher establishment that can appeal to kosher andnon-kosher eaters. Many customers also use Milk Street as acaterer for office functions. Patrons very much miss the meatlocation at the Old Post Office. Suggestions for improvementinclude increasing hours of operation and adding some more
options to the menu. One area of operational confusion forpatrons are the configuration of the lines: there are separatelines for sandwiches and entrees customers request theestablishment consider some way to make this process moreunderstandable.

For another year, Ramis received consumer recognition onthe consistent quality of its schwarma and falafel. People alsofind the establishment clean. Staff at this restaurant receivedmixed results regarding their attitude. At the same time, thelocations weaknesses remain the same as previous years: thespace is very limited customers would love to see a larger
space. Other areas for improvement include ensuring thatschwarma does not run out, adding items to the menu, andaccepting credit cards. Consumers are finding that the pricesare getting expensive for this take-out type of cuisine.

Taam China presented another instance where numericalscores were quite positive, but written comments focused onareas of improvement. One particular positive comment is therecommendation for the hot and sour soup. With respect to thephysical plant, customers find the Brookline location quitecramped with tables too close together. Patrons also observethat the lights flicker on and off regularly. Customers still feelrushed by the staff who are also described as not friendly.Survey takers also are frustrated that reservations are notalways honored. With respect to food related items, customersnotice that portions have been made noticeably smaller withinthe last year. In addition, the restaurants charge for rice isanother unwelcome change.

Taam China Newton presents the same cuisine as theBrookline restaurant, but in a more comfortable atmosphere.Customers appreciate the Newton location. The food here isdescribed as good in quality and service is also seen asresponsive. At the same time, instances of poorcommunication by the employees have led to negative service
experiences. At busy times, Taam China is not always able tohandle the crowds. Like the Brookline location, customersnotice that portion sizes have decreased over the last year orso. When this location opened, customers hoped for somedifferent menu items from its sister location and have beendisappointed that such has not happened.

particular problem). While overall selection is seen as good, actual availability of items is variable. Sometimes, patrons feelthat they have bought stale goods. This establishment hasdifficulty dealing with long lines; the existing staffingarrangement cannot handle a crowd. Consumers find that thephysical plant of the bakery is a bit dirty and run down.

by customers is the chocolate babka. Patrons request that theestablishment consider accepting credit cards. The counterhelp at Cheryl Anns did not receive positive marks, somepatrons finding the employees unfriendly. Many consumerspurchase Cheryl Anns challah at area grocery markets; it maybe a good idea to get some quality checks performed -- anumber of these consumers found these challahs dry.
